Abstract

Language production has often been described as impaired in psychiatric diseases such as in psychosis. Nevertheless, little is known about the characteristics of linguistic difficulties and their relation with other cognitive domains in patients with a first episode of psychosis (FEP), either affective or non-affective. To deepen our comprehension of linguistic profile in FEP, 133 patients with FEP (95 non-affective, FEP-NA; 38 affective, FEP-A) and 133 healthy controls (HC) were assessed with a narrative discourse task. Speech samples were systematically analyzed with a well-established multilevel procedure investigating both micro- (lexicon, morphology, syntax) and macro-linguistic (discourse coherence, pragmatics) levels of linguistic processing. Executive functioning and IQ were also evaluated. Both linguistic and neuropsychological measures were secondarily implemented with a machine learning approach in order to explore their predictive accuracy in classifying participants as FEP or HC. Compared to HC, FEP patients showed language production difficulty at both micro- and macro-linguistic levels. As for the former, FEP produced shorter and simpler sentences and fewer words per minute, along with a reduced number of lexical fillers, compared to HC. At the macro-linguistic level, FEP performance was impaired in local coherence, which was paired with a higher percentage of utterances with semantic errors. Linguistic measures were not correlated with any neuropsychological variables. No significant differences emerged between FEP-NA and FEP-A (p≥0.02, after Bonferroni correction). Machine learning analysis showed an accuracy of group prediction of 76.36% using language features only, with semantic variables being the most impactful. Abstract

Behavioural contagion is a widespread phenomenon in animal species, which is thought to promote coordination and group cohesion. Among non-human primates, however, there is no evidence of behavioural contagion in Platyrrhines (i.e. primates from South and Central America) yet. Here, we investigated whether behavioural contagion is also present in this taxon, by assessing yawning and scratching contagion in a wild group (N = 49) of Geoffroy’s spider monkeys (Ateles geoffroyi). We conducted focal samples to examine whether individuals observing the triggering event (i.e. a naturally occurring yawning or scratching event in the group) would be more likely to yawn or scratch in the following 3 min, as compared to individuals who did not observe the triggering event. We ran generalized linear mixed models using a Bayesian approach, and found that the probability of yawning and scratching was higher for individuals observing others yawning and scratching, respectively, as compared to individuals who did not observe such an event. Behavioural contagion did not vary depending on the observer’s sex, kinship or relationship quality with the individual performing the triggering event. These findings provide the first evidence for yawning and scratching contagion in a wild group of spider monkeys, and importantly contribute to the debate about the evolutionary origins of behavioural contagion in primates.

Abstract

Senses form the interface between animals and environments, and provide a window into the ecology of past and present species. However, research on sensory behaviours by wild frugivores is sparse. Here, we examine fruit assessment by three sympatric primates ( Alouatta palliata , Ateles geoffroyi and Cebus imitator ) to test the hypothesis that dietary and sensory specialization shape foraging behaviours. Ateles and Cebus groups are comprised of dichromats and trichromats, while all Alouatta are trichomats. We use anatomical proxies to examine smell, taste and manual touch, and opsin genotyping to assess colour vision. We find that the frugivorous spider monkeys ( Ateles geoffroyi ) sniff fruits most often, omnivorous capuchins ( Cebus imitator ), the species with the highest manual dexterity, use manual touch most often, and that main olfactory bulb volume is a better predictor of sniffing behaviour than nasal turbinate surface area. We also identify an interaction between colour vision phenotype and use of other senses. Controlling for species, dichromats sniff and bite fruits more often than trichromats, and trichromats use manual touch to evaluate cryptic fruits more often than dichromats. Our findings reveal new relationships among dietary specialization, anatomical variation and foraging behaviour, and promote understanding of sensory system evolution.

Aureli Abstract: The presence of young infants influences female primate social behaviour, in particular social grooming, which may be exchanged for infant access within a biological market place (Henzi & Barrett, 2002, Animal Behaviour, 63, 915-921). Although social grooming is common among Old World primate species, it is rarely observed in a number of New World primate species, including spider monkeys. We investigated whether affiliative behaviour is exchanged for infant handling among wild female spider monkeys, Ateles geoffroyi yucatanesis. Occurrences of approaches, grooming and embraces received by 15 adult females were compared when they had infants less than 6 months old ('mothers') and at all other times. The occurrence of grooming was not influenced by the presence of infants. However, females received significantly more approaches and embraces when they were mothers compared to all other times. As mothers, they received significantly more embraces than they gave indicating that the increase in friendly behaviour received was due to increased interest from other females and not simply a general increase in sociality. The exchange of embraces for infant handling was subject to a market effect as the proportion of embraces given to mothers followed by infant handling decreased when fewer infants were present in the group. Although spider monkeys use embraces as the primary means of gaining access to infants, whether embraces provide long-term benefits to the recipient, remains to be determined. Thus, embraces may only serve to signal benign intent and reassure mothers during tense interactions such as infant handling. We present the case of a 56-year-old male kidney transplant recipient affected by Lowe's syndrome, also known as oculocerebrorenal syndrome, a rare X-linked disorder characterized by congenital cataracts, hypotonia, intellectual disability, and Fanconi-like renal tubular dysfunction, who was diagnosed with angiosarcoma of a functioning arteriovenous fistula for hemodialysis. Conclusion. Angiosarcoma is a rare soft tissue tumor, and only 22 cases of angiosarcoma of arteriovenous fistulae were described so far; although a correlation between Lowe's syndrome and a higher risk of tumor compared to the general population has not been described so far, the mechanisms of disease causation could be an interesting starting point for future studies on a possible connection between the two events.

Abstract

Abstract

Between-group competition has long been thought to be a key factor influencing within-group social dynamics. In humans, it has been suggested that between-group competition may favour the emergence of within-group cooperation. However, between-group competition can also be hypothesized to induce social tension and cause within-group social relationships to deteriorate. So far, little research has focused on these possible effects in animal societies. In this study, we used an experimental set-up to manipulate the opportunity for visual aggressive interactions between two adjacent groups of captive tufted capuchin monkeys, Cebus apella, to examine the group members' behavioural adjustment in terms of affiliation and aggression. The 'cooperative hypothesis' predicted social relationships to be positively reinforced by the visual exposure to the adjacent group to buffer between-group hostility. By contrast, the 'induced-tension hypothesis' predicted social relationships to be negatively affected by the visual exposure to the adjacent group because of the higher level of social tension induced by between-group hostility. The experimental manipulation did not produce changes in affiliative behaviours, whereas within-group aggression was higher and the dominance hierarchy steeper when visual aggressive interactions between groups were allowed. Overall, interactions with a neighbouring group caused social relationships to deteriorate and partly confirmed the induced-tension hypothesis.

Abstract

Although quite widespread across different animal taxa, grooming is an especially prominent feature of primate social life. In the social domain, grooming is thought to function as a service that individuals exchange in return for other benefits, such as other grooming, tolerance and support. However, very little is known about whether the specific social context in which grooming interactions occur may influence its function. The goal of this study was to analyse the function grooming serves in different social contexts in a New World primate species. Specifically, we tested whether grooming was exchanged as a service exchanged for tolerance in a feeding context and an infant handling context. Study subjects were 9 adult females belonging to a wild group of tufted capuchin monkeys (Cebus apella nigritus) in Iguazú National Park, Argentina. Data on grooming, co-feeding on contestable resources (as a measure of tolerance), and infant handling among females were collected over a 16-month period via focal sampling, ad libitum and instantaneous sampling. Our results indicate that in the long-term grooming seems to function as a service given in exchange for tolerance during feeding (i.e. the more grooming is received, the more tolerance is given). In contrast, in the context of infant handling grooming does not seem to represent a tradable service, but it may function as a signal of benign intent. These findings provide evidence for a multi-faceted function of grooming in different social contexts. It can be performed either as a service in return for benefits or as positive signal to facilitate social interactions.

30. Direct, Indirect and Generalized Reciprocity of Grooming in Long-Tailed Macaques (Macaca fascicularis)

Abstract

Reciprocation is a key mechanism favouring the occurrence of altruism among non-relatives. Three types of reciprocity have been proposed: direct, indirect and generalized reciprocity. Although all three types are theoretically possible, examining their relative prevalence in real biological systems is key to understand their role in the evolution of altruism. We tested concurrently the occurrence of direct, indirect and generalized reciprocity by analyzing grooming exchanges in long-tailed macaques. The occurrence and timing of grooming interactions between our study animals were extracted from 5-hr long focal sessions. Our various analyses supported the occurrence of direct reciprocity in macaque grooming exchanges. Conversely, we found no evidence for indirect and generalized reciprocity. Macaques may possess the cognitive skills that are thought to be necessary for direct reciprocity to occur. Alternatively, direct reciprocity may be driven by a system of partner-specific emotional bookkeeping of past social interactions that does not require complex cognitive capacities. We suggest generalized reciprocity becomes marginal or absent when animals are given the choice between generalized and direct reciprocation, wheras indirect reciprocity might be too cognitively demanding for non-human animals.

Abstract

Background Multi-element interventions for first-episode psychosis (FEP) are promising, but have mostly been conducted in non-epidemiologically representative samples, thereby raising the risk of underestimating the complexities involved in treating FEP in ‘real-world’ services. Methods/Design The Psychosis early Intervention and Assessment of Needs and Outcome (PIANO) trial is part of a larger research program (Genetics, Endophenotypes and Treatment: Understanding early Psychosis - GET UP) which aims to compare, at 9 months, the effectiveness of a multi-component psychosocial intervention versus treatment as usual (TAU) in a large epidemiologically based cohort of patients with FEP and their family members recruited from all public community mental health centers (CMHCs) located in two entire regions of Italy (Veneto and Emilia Romagna), and in the cities of Florence, Milan and Bolzano. The GET UP PIANO trial has a pragmatic cluster randomized controlled design. The randomized units (clusters) are the CMHCs, and the units of observation are the centers’ patients and their family members. Patients in the experimental group will receive TAU plus: 1) cognitive behavioral therapy sessions, 2) psycho-educational sessions for family members, and 3) case management. Patient enrolment will take place over a 1-year period. Several psychopathological, psychological, functioning, and service use variables will be assessed at baseline and follow-up. The primary outcomes are: 1) change from baseline to follow-up in positive and negative symptoms’ severity and subjective appraisal; 2) relapse occurrences between baseline and follow-up, that is, episodes resulting in admission and/or any case-note records of re-emergence of positive psychotic symptoms. The expected number of recruited patients is about 400, and that of relatives about 300. Owing to the implementation of the intervention at the CMHC level, the blinding of patients, clinicians, and raters is not possible, but every effort will be made to preserve the independency of the raters. We expect that this study will generate evidence on the best treatments for FEP, and will identify barriers that may hinder its feasibility in ‘real-world’ clinical settings, patient/family conditions that may render this intervention ineffective or inappropriate, and clinical, psychological, environmental, and service organization predictors of treatment effectiveness, compliance, and service satisfaction.
