Most of the Middle Palaeolithic evidence of Central Italy still lacks a reliable chrono-cultural framework mainly due to research history. In this context Grotta dei Santi, a wide cave located on Monte Argentario, on the southern coast of Tuscany, is particularly relevant as it contains a very well preserved sequence including several Mousterian layers.

The middle Rhône Valley in the south east of France offers an opportunity to address the question of Neandertal mobility and the status of their occupations by comparing a broad corpus of sites in a limited chronological and geographic context. The combined study of occupation levels from ten deposits has revealed three occupation types defined based on the management and use of animal resources (Daujeard, 2008). This diversity is represented by technical choices and diverse tool assemblages. In addition to faunal criteria, this work compares other parameters, such as archaeostratigraphy, lithic artefacts and dental microwear to determine site function and occupation duration. We present the example of unit F at the site of Payre, dated to MIS 8/7 and defined as a recurring short-term camp.

International audience; A great number of Lower Palaeolithic sites in Italy yielded lithic industries associated with elephant remains. This recurrent association can give an im- pression of homogeneity, but in fact the situation is much more complex. This association must rath- er be seen as a prism to understand the cultural and behavior variability. We investigate this topic through the evidence of two early Middle Pleisto- cene Italian sites, Cimitero di Atella and Ficoncella, and we try to insert results obtained previously in the framework of the Middle Pleistocene in Italy.

The Lower Paleolithic site of Atella in Basilicata has been excavated and studied almost continuously since the 1990s, first under the direction of E. Borzatti and since 2015 in a new project. The first years of the project were devoted to the revision of the chrono-stratigraphic context and the techno-cultural attribution of the occupations of Cimitero di Atella. While previous work had led to the identification of different secondary position occupations, result of post-depositional phenomena, this year’s excavation revealed the existence of a less disturbed level, offering renewed opportunities for study.

Cimitero di Atella, discovered and excavated for 20 year by E. Borzatti and his team, yielded evidence of several Lower Palaeolithic occupations (circa 600,000 years ago). The previous research on the lithic assemblage lead to the attribution of these occupations to Lower Acheulean because of the presence of Handaxes. This tool emergence properly at this period in Europe and will last up to the end of Lower Palaeolithic (circa 300,000 years ago). The resumption of activities at Atella is part of a new project of the French School of Rome on the settlement dynamic during the Palaeolithic in Italy (quinquennial program PALEO). The research at Atella focus on fieldwork, lithic and faunal remains study and protection and enhancement of the site. In 2016 and 2017, excavation and study lead us to question the role of Atella in the Mediterranean Lower Palaeolithic framework. Long-term work studies will allow also to precise the chronostratigraphic context and the site formation processes.

- Abstract
The study of Neandertal behaviour in Central-Southern Italy using GIS systems is one the research topics explored by the R.U. of Prehistory and Anthropology (DSFTA) of the University of Siena. Multidisciplinary and integrated analytic protocols have been applied in a number of stratigraphic contexts of Central-Southern Italy: Grotta Grande and Riparo del Molare (MIS 5; San Giovanni a Piro, SA; Ronchitelli et al. 2011, Boscato et al. 2002), Riparo l’Oscurusciuto (MIS 3; Ginosa, TA; Marciani et al. 2016, Spagnolo et al. 2016) and Grotta dei Santi (MIS 3; Monte Argentario, GR; Spagnolo 2017). These sites are particularly suitable for being observed under a multi-scale perspective: from the high-resolution diachronic reading of historical processes to the intra-site investigation at a territorial scale. Settling strategies of Neandertal hunter-gatherers are the pivot around which a lively scientific debate has developed among scholars of different disciplines, highlighting the magnitude of the problem in terms of involved research fields. As a consequence increasingly integrated methodologies of study are needed. Thus, the contextual multi-scale dimension of Spatial Archaeology is becoming the ideal “scenario” where the integration among single results of prehistoric research can occur. According to investigations carried out at an intra-site scale, the different organization of space in Neandertal camps of the examined sample is probably the expression of merely spatial variables (e.g. size of the investigated area), even if, sometimes, it seems to actually mirror real differences in settling strategies (e.g. brief vs. long occupations). As expected, the degree of “archaeological visibility” of the activity areas is directly proportional to how much the contexts under study lasted in time. Consequently, living floors and short-lived palimpsests can be obviously read more clearly than long-lasting palimpsests. Moreover, the availability of stratigraphic sequences with several occupational layers, often very well preserved, is a key-factor for detecting continuity and discontinuity of settlement patterns. Settlement fluctuations and changes, besides representing adaptations to local environmental contexts, work as proxies for social structures and for one of the “quiet motors” of history: dialectic relation between “group memory” and “Longue durée”. On a territorial geographical scale, spatial analyses, integrated by palaeo-environmental evidence and by techno-economic data from lithic assemblages and faunal associations contribute to the reconstruction of mobility strategies and of “play ranges” of hunter-gatherer groups., Sezione di Museologia Scientifica e Naturalistica, Vol 13 (2017): IV IAPP - Ferrara 2018

- Abstract
Keywords: 3D microscopy; taphonomy; butchering marks; zooarchaeology; geometric morphometrics; Parole chiave: microscopia 3D; tafonomia; tracce di macellazione; archeozoologia; morfometria geometrica The use of 3D imaging techniques in taphonomy increased in the last years. At the university of Siena, such techniques have been applied in prehistory since 2009, by means of digital microscopy (Figure 1). A first test, inspired by the work of some international colleagues (Bello and Soligo 2008), was focused on the distinction between cross-sections of cut marks produced with metal knives and cut marks produced with flint implements. The promising obtained results demonstrated how a morphometrical approach can be useful to characterize and study cross-sections of bone modifications from archaeological sites. Further studies tried to push this application to a more in-depth level, with the aim to understand how specific tools and actions can influence morphology of cut mark characteristics (Crezzini et al. 2014, Moretti et al. 2015). In particular, paying attention to the characteristics of the tool’s cutting edges, it was observed that a same “category” of lithic implements can leave different traces when used in different ways. At the same time, in addition to a morphological approach and to a more basic metrical one, the latter based on the analysis of single variables (such as for instance depth, breadth or opening angles) or ratio between them, other approaches were developed. In particular, it was tested the application of multivariate statistics and geometric morphometrics. The first one looks to be promising and was successfully applied to the study of several contexts also in collaboration with colleagues from other Italian institutes (Boschin and Crezzini 2012, Duches et al. 2016), whilst the latter, even if used at an international level, is affected by some problems. In particular, there are more parameters that contribute to characterize a mark’s cross-section, but it is difficult to give more weight to the “right” ones. For instance, a mark’s cross-section is characterized by a floor (wide or narrow), by an opening angle, by two slopes of equal or different length and by ancillary striations on the floor and on the slopes. A geometric morphometric analysis can for instance separate between marks with ancillary striations on the right side and ones with striations on the left side, but maybe this result can be senseless in taphonomy. The published studies demonstrated that 3D imaging of bone modifications can be used to separate between “macro-categories” of marks (stone tools vs. metal tools; butchering marks vs. impact drags; anthropic modifications vs. non-anthropic ones), and that it is important to build up a good experimental protocol with the aim to produce referential data. The future challenge is the characterization of more specific kind of marks (butchering marks produced with different stone raw materials or with different stone tools, trampling etc.).

The Oscurusciuto rock shelter, located in southern Italy (Puglia), has yielded a long Middle Palaeolithic stratigraphy rich in lithic assemblages, fireplaces and faunal remains, attesting Neanderthal occupation during the MIS 3. This paper is focused on the stratigraphic unit 13, consisting of a sandy compact deposit mixed with pyroclastic sediment above a thick level of tephra-US 14, identified as Mt. Epomeo green tuff (dated Ar/Ar ~ 55 ka).Level 13 represents the first stable human occupation after the deposition of tephra. Our goal was to examine the lithic assemblage of this stratigraphic unit by means of an interdisciplinary approach (technology, RMU, refitting program) in order to identify the economic behaviour and technical strategies of Neanderthals occupying the stratigraphic unit 13 of Oscurusciuto. The technical strategies applied indicate fragmentation of the reduction processes, as well as probable events of importation and exportation of objects. The lithic material were introduced at different stages of manufacturing. Pieces were introduced in the form of rough objects (pebbles), as well as semi-finished items, and as finished tools. This fragmentation of the chaîne opératoire also demonstrate the palimpsest nature of the level which is made up of different events happening one after another. The main concept of debitage was Levallois, generally realized on local jasper and siliceous limestone pebbles or cortical flakes. Jasper and siliceous limestone flakes, backed flakes and convergent flakes were the technological objectives of the debitage. A marginal volumetric debitage aimed at producing bladelets was also attested.
