4. Acceptance Assessment of the Software MOTIVATIC WEB by University Educators

Abstract

MOTIVATIC WEB is a software platform in which teachers can co-design activities for their students using three different gamified mechanics. This article presents the results of the technology acceptance evaluation by users. The evaluation considered aspects related to perceived usefulness (PU) and ease of use, behavioural intention to use, and external variables related to user experience, functionality, and web platform visual aesthetics (VA), aspects adapted from the TAM model. A qualitative analysis instrument was applied to 21 higher education professors from five different countries, experts in the areas of economic and administrative sciences, industrial engineering, basic sciences and medical sciences. The results indicate that the PU and ease of use of the software are related to the intention to use it. It shows that the software is efficient as an educational support resource, allowing the design of certain mechanics for students as well as communication and collaboration among teachers.

Abstract

Working while taking classes is one of the most frequently cited reasons cited by university dropouts. As the Covid-19 pandemic has accelerated the adoption of teleworking by employers, online employment opportunities have increased. Given that the scenario allows students to work while studying online, determining the number and extent of employed students is an important area of research. This study aims to document the employment profiles of undergraduate students of Quezon City University. A total of 7,050 responses were received during the survey period. According to the findings of the study, approximately 15% of the students are employed full- or part-time. At the time of the survey, 64% of the working students who responded in the survey are working on-site, while 24% are working from home. Meanwhile, 50% of these working students are extremely satisfied with their current employment situation, while 44% are somewhat satisfied. In general, the majority of respondents are pleased with their current employment situation. Despite the fact that only two out of ten respondents are working students, the school administration must still pay close attention to this issue. The development of policies that will assist these students is required. For future studies, it is also important to examine employment patterns among undergraduates and how these patterns vary over time and based on student characteristics.

Abstract

We address the origin of Ultra-Diffuse Galaxies (UDGs), which have stellar masses typical of dwarf galaxies but effective radii of Milky Way-sized objects. Their formation mechanism, and whether they are failed $\rm L_{\star}$ galaxies or diffuse dwarfs, are challenging issues. Using zoom-in cosmological simulations from the NIHAO project, we show that UDG analogues form naturally in medium-mass haloes due to episodes of gas outflows associated with star formation. The simulated UDGs live in isolated haloes of masses $10^{10-11}\rm M_{\odot}$, have stellar masses of $10^{7-8.5}\rm M_{\odot}$, effective radii larger than 1 kpc and dark matter cores. They show a broad range of colors, an average S\'ersic index of 0.83, a typical distribution of halo spin and concentration, and a non-negligible HI gas mass of $10^{7-9}\rm M_{\odot}$, which correlates with the extent of the galaxy. Gas availability is crucial to the internal processes that form UDGs: feedback driven gas outflows, and subsequent dark matter and stellar expansion, are the key to reproduce faint, yet unusually extended, galaxies. This scenario implies that UDGs represent a dwarf population of low surface brightness galaxies and should exist in the field. 14. Examining Value Generation activities in agro-industrial Chains: a Systematic literature Review.

Abstract

This article identifies value-generating activities in agro-industrial chains, through a systematic literature review in the Scopus database, combining terms associated with the generation of value in this type of chains. The search yielded more than two thousand documents, which were reduced using pre-established exclusion and inclusion criteria, like date and language. As a result of the application of these criteria, seventy-eight articles were selected for analysis, allowing the identification of thirty value-generating activities in agro-industrial chains. The findings show that activities associated with operational skills and the integration of agribusiness are the most relevant. However, in recent years value has been given to activities associated with marketing and innovation, making new strategies for the use of resources visible, which directly impacts the increase in the competitiveness of agro-industrial chains. Abstract

El cerebro humano ha sido descrito como un sistema complejo. Su estudio por medio de señales neurofisiológicas ha desvelado la presencia de interacciones lineales y no lineales. En este contexto, se han utilizado métricas de entropía para descubrir el comportamiento cerebral en presencia y ausencia de alteraciones neurológicas. El mapeo de la entropía es de gran interés para el estudio de enfermedades neurodegenerativas progresivas como la enfermedad de Alzheimer. El objetivo de este estudio fue caracterizar la dinámica de las oscilaciones cerebrales en dicha enfermedad por medio de la entropía y la amplitud de las oscilaciones de baja frecuencia a partir de señales Bold de la red por defecto y la red de control ejecutivo en pacientes con Alzheimer e individuos sanos, utilizando una base de datos extraída de la serie de estudios de imágenes de acceso abierto. Los resultados revelaron mayor poder discriminatorio de la entropía por permutaciones en comparación a la amplitud de fluctuación de baja frecuencia y la amplitud fraccional de fluctuaciones de baja frecuencia. Se obtuvo un incremento de la entropía por permutaciones en regiones de la red por defecto y la red de control ejecutivo en pacientes. La corteza cingulada posterior y la precuña manifestaron característica diferencial al evaluar la entropía por permutaciones en ambos grupos. No hubo hallazgos al correlacionar las métricas con las escalas clínicas. Los resultados demostraron que la entropía por permutaciones permite caracterizar la función cerebral en pacientes con Alzheimer, además revela información sobre las interacciones no lineales complementaria a las características obtenidas por medio del cálculo de la amplitud de las oscilaciones de baja frecuencia.

27. Barriers to a healthy diet and physical activity in Mexican adults: results from the Mexican Health and Nutrition Survey

Abstract

This study aims to (1) identify the most prevalent perceived barriers for healthy eating and performing physical activity among adults in Mexico; and (2) determine the association between perceived barriers, with body mass index (BMI) categories, geo-demographic and socio-economic characteristics. We carried out a cross-sectional, secondary analysis of publicly available data from the Mexican Health and Nutrition Survey 2016. We extracted data from 6406 adults, aged 20-65 years, including: perceived barriers for healthy eating and for performing physical activity, BMI, residence area, region of Mexico, sex, age and socio-economic status. Logistic regression models were used to evaluate the association between perceived barriers with the categories of obesity, geographic and socio-demographic variables. Seventy-four point nine percent of the respondents were categorised as having either overweight or obesity, 80.5% reported at least one barrier to healthy eating and 78.3% at least one barrier to performing physical activity. Of the listed barriers, the most reported barriers were 'lack of affordability' (58.6%) for healthy eating and 'lack of time' (51.2%) for performing physical activity. Females (OR 1.27, 95% CI 1.11 to 1.46) and people with obesity (OR 1.19, 95% CI 1.01 to 1.41) were more likely to report barriers to a healthy diet; and females (OR 1.39, 95% CI 1.41 to 1.59), people with obesity (OR 1.41, 95% CI 1.19 to 1.69) and those living in rural areas (OR 1.49, 95% CI 1.30 to 1.72) were more likely to report barriers to performing physical activity. There was a high prevalence of reported barriers for healthy eating and performing physical activity. Females, people with obesity, and those living in rural areas are more likely to report barriers for healthy eating and for performing physical activity. Targeted health programmes and tailored interventions that address the barriers to a healthy lifestyle that these groups experience may encourage healthier lifestyle behaviours in a greater proportion of Mexican adults.

28. Workshop on dynamics of land to lake transfers in the Winam Gulf

Abstract

This report describes a stakeholder engagement workshop carried out by the British Geological Survey (BGS) and research partners from the University of Eldoret and the Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute in December 2023. This workshop was co-funded by a Royal Society International Collaboration Grant (ICA\R1\191077 entitled ‘Dynamics of Environmental Geochemistry and Health in a Lake-wide Basin’) and a NERC NC-International grant (NE/X006255/1, entitled ‘Geoscience to tackle global environmental challenges’). The aim of this workshop was to disseminate our most recent research findings on soil erosion and sediment source apportionment in the Winam Gulf, Kenya. We also built upon previous stakeholder engagement meetings where discussions were held to identify the most effective methods of delivering outputs where they can be used to inform strategies to mitigate soil erosion and sediment transfers in the catchment resulting from poor land management. All the information collected from participants will be used to inform future workshops, planned for June 2024 and final data distribution tools. Furthermore, it was recommended by the workshop participants that the need for greater capacity building could be achieved through the formation of a committee which oversees and plans the coordination of land-lake activities through the communication and sharing of the latest activities, interests and needs of the combined land/lake communities in the Lake Victoria basin. The formation of such a committee could be facilitated through this research project and would be the first step towards creating an impactful management framework. This could provide an exemplar for other land-lake systems.

Abstract

Objetivo: caracterizar el desempeño motor grueso y fino y el estado nutricional en niños de cero a tres años de un Centro de Recuperación Nutricional (crn) de Tunja. Metodología: estudio observacional descriptivo de corte transversal en niños menores de 36 meses, hospitalizados en el crn en el período comprendido entre enero y junio de 2011, se realizó la revisión de 46 historias clínicas y de los datos antropométricos del programa antrho, sumado a la aplicación de la Escala Abreviada del Desarrollo (ead). Resultados: se evidenció asociación significativa entre motricidad gruesa, fina y la desnutrición aguda (p > 0,05).Con los demás grados de desnutrición no se encontró relación (p > 0,05). Discusión: el niño con desnutrición aguda tiene un desarrollo medio de la motricidad fina, los estados de desnutrición aguda son menos influyentes para el estado de desarrollo alerta en la motricidad fina que en la motricidad gruesa, sin embargo, es interesante el hallazgo concerniente al estado de desarrollo medio en las variables motricidad gruesa y fina donde el comportamiento es similar en torno al estado de desnutrición aguda con elevados porcentajes de compromiso.

37. Lake Victoria’s bounty: A case for riparian countries’ blue economic investment

Abstract

People residing in Lake Victoria’s basin and riparian countries benefit from ecosystem services provided by the lake. However, the lake’s resources, particularly fish, are under threat from pressures caused by humans such as overfishing, alien species invasion, rising eutrophication, and climate change. In this assessment, we look at how to maximize the lake’s benefits through product diversification, value addition, and sustainable use of its fisheries. We show that minimizing post-harvest losses of the silver cyprinid (Rastrineobola argentea), locally known as Dagaa, will provide more high-quality fish for human consumption, while significantly increasing fishing earnings. Furthermore, by utilizing biowaste (frames, skin, and fish mouth), revenues from Nile perch could be increased up to thrice. Furthermore, if fishing could target maximum sustainable yield (MSY), landings of Nile perch and Dagaa could increase significantly in the long run. These, combined with investments in other areas such as lacustrine tourism and recreation, as well as fish cage culture, can help the Lake Victoria region’s blue economy expand.

Abstract The human brain has been described as a complex system. Its study using neurophysiological signals has revealed the presence of linear and non-linear interactions. In this context, entropy metrics have been used to discover brain behavior in the presence and absence of neurological alterations. Entropy mapping is of great interest for the study of progressive neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s Disease (AD). The objective of this study was to characterize the dynamics of brain oscillations in AD using entropy and the Amplitude of Low-Frequency Fluctuations (ALFF) of BOLD signals from the default network and the executive control network in patients with AD and healthy individuals. For this purpose, the data was extracted from the Open Access Series of Imaging Studies (OASIS). The results revealed greater discriminatory power in Permutation Entropy (PE) than in ALFF and fractional ALFF metrics. An increase in PE was obtained in regions of the default network and the executive control network in patients. The posterior cingulate cortex and the precuneus exhibited a differential characteristic when PE was evaluated in both groups. There were no findings when the metrics were correlated with clinical scales. The results showed that PE can be used to characterize the brain function in patients with AD and reveals information about non-linear interactions complementary to the characteristics obtained by calculating the ALFF.
