International audience; Different regimes are usually observed for fluid migration through an immersed granular layer. In this work, we report a puzzling behavior when injecting water at a constant flow rate through a nozzle at the bottom of an immersed granular layer in a Hele-Shaw cell. In a given range of parameters (granular layer height and fluid flow-rate) the granular bed is not only fuidized, but the particle-laden jet also exhibits periodic oscillations. The frequency and amplitude of the oscillations are quantified. The Strouhal number displays a power-law behavior as a function of a non-dimensional parameter, J, defined as the ratio between the jet velocity at the initial granular bed height and the inertial particle velocity. Fluid-particle coupling is responsible for the jet oscillations. This mechanism could be at the origin of the cyclic behavior of pockmarks and mud volcanoes in sedimentary basins.

Microfaults formed in continental carbonates reveal poorly known mechanisms of shear localization induced by early diagenesis during compaction. These faults are characterized by sinuous shape, bed-controlled, pervasive distribution, no calcite precipitation, and mainly disaggregation processes. Two main sets were described: (1) The first set is composed by normal-sense, high-angle microfaults affecting the top of carbonate beds showing undulating pedogenic bed surface. They show porosity increase and are sometimes organized in polygonal patterns. Their occurrence seems related to overconsolidation of pedogenic surface and density inversion – phreatic loading – fluid expulsion processes in the surficial carbonate bed. (2) The second set is composed by low-angle compactive microfaults with large slickenlines and incipient shear-offset. Their organization within two conjugate systems (normal-sense set and strike-slip set) almost contemporaneous is consistent with a NS extension following the slope induced by the basin subsidence to the south. Their occurrence seems related to vertical loading below few meters depth and occurred by shear-enhanced compaction and incipient pressure-solution process. The presence of such structures gives news information concerning dilatant or compactive shear processes and rheological properties of micritic carbonates during early diagenesis.

Detailed sedimentological investigations on numerous outcrops and drill-core sections in the 2.1-Ga-old Franceville basin, Gabon, provide evidence for a large-scale injectite network. The injectites were formed by the injection of sands through a thickness of about 150 m of the FB1 Member, and now cover a minimum area of 70 km 2 corresponding to the Bangombe plateau, but are also recognized close to Franceville 35 km farther south-east. The injectite lithology corresponds to a mud- or carbonate-supported sandstone characterized by a loose and uncompacted fabric contrasting with the host-rock. Because the injectites are often parallel to subparallel to the stratification, they were misinterpreted as depositional beds by previous authors. At outcrop, the injectite bodies exhibit sill, dyke, wing and protrusive geometries emplaced during early burial within poorly compacted material, with partial wall erosion and dissociation. The source of the sand material is attributed to a channel-levee turbidite depositional system located in the lower part of the FB1 Member. These deposits were buried by a thick biochemical muddy cap deposited during a starvation phase, which increased the seal capacity of the system. This type of architecture has a high potential to develop compaction disequilibrium during burial. Moreover, in the case of the Francevillian injectites, the abundance of microbial organic matter favoured early methane degassing and lateral charging of the sand reservoir. The overpressure in the channels was periodically released during early burial, through the effect of rapid sedimentary and tectonic loading, and possible seismic activity. The fluidized sand was injected according to a symmetrical wing pattern. Thus, the injected masses caused a local decrease in the grade of the lateritic manganese ore deposit of the Bangombe plateau.

International audience; The giant Jurassic-aged pockmark field of Beauvoisin developed in a 800 m wide depression for over 3.4 Ma during the Oxfordian; it formed below about 600 m water depth. It is composed of sub-sites organized in clusters and forming vertically stacked carbonate lenses encased in marls . This fine-scale study is focused on a detailed analysis of petrographical organization and geochemical signatures of crystals that grew up in early to late fractures of carbonate lenses, surrounding nodules, and tubes that fed them. The isotopic signature (C, O and Sr) shows that at least three different episodes of fluid migration participated to the mineralization processes. Most of the carbonates precipitated when biogenic seepage was active in the shallow subsurface during the Oxfordian. The second phase occurred relatively soon after burial during early Cretaceous and thermogenic fluids came probably from underlying Pliensbachian, Late Toarcian or Bajocian levels. The third phase is a bitumen-rich fluid probably related to these levels reaching the oil window during Mio-Pliocene. The fluids migrated through faults induced by the emplacement of Triassic-salt diapir of Propiac during the Late Jurassic and that remained polyphased drain structures over time.

International audience; Constraining the thermal, burial and uplift/exhumation history of sedimentary basins is crucial in the understanding of upper crustal strain evolution and also has implications for understanding the nature and timing of hydrocarbon maturation and migration. In this study, we use Vitrinite Reflectance (VR) data to elucidate the paleo‐physiography and thermal history of an inverted basin in the foreland of the Atlasic orogeny in Northern Tunisia. In doing so, it is the primary aim of this study to demonstrate how VR techniques may be applied to unravel basin subsidence/uplift history of structural domains and provide valuable insights into the kinematic evolution of sedimentary basins. VR measurements of both the onshore Pelagian Platform and the Tunisian Furrow in Northern Tunisia are used to impose constraints on the deformation history of a long‐lived structural feature in the studied region, namely the Zaghouan Fault. Previous work has shown that this fault was active as an extensional structure in Lower Jurassic to Aptian times, before subsequently being inverted during the Late Cretaceous Eocene Atlas I tectonic event and Upper Miocene Atlas II tectonic event. Quantifying and constraining this latter inversion stage, and shedding light on the roles of structural inheritance and the basin thermal history, are secondary aims of this study. The results of this study show that the Atlas II WNW‐ESE compressive event deformed both the Pelagian Platform and the Tunisian Furrow during Tortonian‐Messinian times. Maximum burial depth for the Pelagian Platform was reached during the Middle to Upper Miocene, i.e. prior to the Atlas II folding event. VR measurements indicate that the Cretaceous to Ypresian section of the Pelagian Platform was buried to a maximum burial depth of ~3 km, using a geothermal gradient of 30°C/km. Highlights: • The Giant Gjallar Vent is still active in terms of fluid migration and faulting. • The Base Pleistocene Unconformity acts as a seal to upward fluid migration. • Seal bypass in at least one location leads to a new phase of fluid venting. The Giant Gjallar Vent (GGV), located in the Voring Basin off mid-Norway, is one of the largest (~ 5 × 3 km) vent systems in the North Atlantic. The vent represents a reactivated former hydrothermal system that formed at about 56 Ma. It is fed by two pipes of 440 m and 480 m diameter that extend from the Lower Eocene section up to the Base Pleistocene Unconformity (BPU). Previous studies based on 3D seismic data differ in their interpretations of the present activity of the GGV, describing the system as buried and as reactivated in the Upper Pliocene. We present a new interpretation of the GGV’s reactivation, using high-resolution 2D seismic and Parasound data. Despite the absence of geochemical and hydroacoustic indications for fluid escape into the water column, the GGV appears to be active because of various seismic anomalies which we interpret to indicate the presence of free gas in the subsurface. The anomalies are confined to the Kai Formation beneath the BPU and the overlying Naust Formation, which are interpreted to act as a seal to upward fluid migration. The seal is breached by focused fluid migration at one location where an up to 100 m wide chimney-like anomaly extends from the BPU up to the seafloor. We propose that further overpressure build-up in response to sediment loading and continued gas ascent beneath the BPU will eventually lead to large-scale seal bypass, starting a new phase of venting at the GGV.

Fluid seepage features on the upper continental slope offshore Congo are investigated using multi-disciplinary datasets acquired during several campaigns at sea carried out over the last 15 years. This datasets includes multibeam bathymetry, seismic data, seafloor videos, seafloor samples and chemical analyses of both carbonate samples and of the water column. Combined use of these datasets allows the identification of two distinctive associations of pockmark-like seabed venting structures, located in water depths of 600–700 m and directly above a buried structural high containing known hydrocarbon reservoirs. These two features are called spiders due to the association of large sub-circular depressions (the body) with smaller elongate depressions (the legs). Seismic reflection data show that these two structures correspond to amplitude anomalies locatedca. 60–100 ms below seabed. The burial of these anomalies is consistent with the base of the methane hydrate stability domain, which leads to interpret them as patches of hydrate-related bottom-simulating reflection (BSR). The morphology and seismic character of the two structures clearly contrasts with those of the regional background (Morphotype A). The spider structures are composed of two seafloor morphotypes: Morphotype B and Morphotype C. Morphotype B makes flat-bottomed depressions associated with the presence of large bacterial mats without evidence of carbonates. Morphotype C is made of elongated depressions associated with the presence of carbonate pavements and a prolific chemosynthetic benthic life. On that basis of these observations combined with geochemical analyses, the spider structures are interpreted to be linked with methane leakage. Methane leakage within the spider structures varies from one morphotype to another, with a higher activity within the seafloor of Morphotype C; and a lower activity in the seafloor of Morphotype B, which is interpreted to correspond to a domain of relict fluid leakage. This change of the seepage activity is due to deeper changes in gas (or methane) migration corresponding to the progressive upslope migration of fluids. This phenomenon is due to the local formation of gas hydrates that form a barrier allowing the trapping of free gas below in the particular context of the wedge of hydrates.

Beyond their human use, sedimentary basins are more importantly the ultimate exchange interface between the earth's main reservoirs. Firstly, between the upper lithosphere and the atmosphere-hydrosphere reservoirs, exchanges are mainly vertical. Next, between the onshore reservoirs, i.e., on the continental part, and the offshore reservoirs, i.e., in the submerged part of the margins, exchanges are lateral and may take place over great distances. International audience; Cold seeps, located on sea floors and frequently fueled with methane, have been much studied for the formation of carbonate nodules, crusts or masses resulting from the activity og communities of anaerobic bacteria. In this paper, we examine the impact of cold seepage on their caging sediments, as far as their geochemical composition and microfaunal content are concerned. To this end, two fossil cold seeps of the Jurassic Beauvoisin site (Vocontian Trough, SE-France) are studied, focusing on the redox-sensitive and/or sulfide-forming trace metals. We observe that: 1) the carbonate edifices of the cold seeps are enriched in specific elements, namely, Sr, Mo As and Sb, compared to their caging marlstones, and 2) the benthic foraminifer populations were present close to the edifices. The Sr enrichment is ascribed to a contamination of the seeping fluids at the contact with underlying evaporites; the Mo-As-Sb enrichment may have several, non-exclusive, origins. We retain two scenarios; in the first one, the enrichment is due to the ascending fluids that could collect these elements when passing through thick shaly formations; in the second scenario, Mo, As and Sb were supplied to the sites of carbonate precipitation together with Fe- and Mn-oxy-hydroxides (the so-called particulate shuttle process). We favor the second scenario (possibly coupled to the first one) because the rather uncommon Mo-As-Sb association is also observed for reducing sediments deposited under the influence of Fe-Mn-shuttling.

International audience; Polygonal faulting is a widespread phenomenon in sedimentary basins worldwide. It changes basin-scale fluid flow patterns and alters the physical properties of the sediments making it important for hydrocarbon exploration and geohazard analysis. It is generally accepted that polygonal fault patterns derive from dewatering and compaction of the host sediments, but there is debate regarding the processes that control polygonal faulting. New multibeam-bathymetry data from the Hatton Basin, NE Atlantic, show up to 10 m deep and 200-600 m wide troughs at the seabed. They connect to each other forming polygons that are several hundred metres across, i.e. of similar size as buried polygonal fault systems observed in 3D seismic data. The troughs are symmetrical and resemble elongated pockmarks. Previously unpublished high-resolution 2D seismic data from the same area show seismic disturbance zones similar to pipes observed under pockmarks elsewhere as well as faults that have all the characteristics of polygonal fault systems. The observation of the wide disturbance zones is enigmatic, as they appear to follow the polygonal seafloor pattern. The observed extent of the polygonal sediment contraction system is substantial covering almost 37,000 km2. We calculate that some 2600 km3 of possibly carbon-bearing fluids have been expelled from this system and we expect that this will affect the benthic ecosystems, although so far there is only limited evidence for chemosynthetic habitats.

Sequence stratigraphy in the seismic interpretation workflow helps in the understanding of the basin analysis and the spatial distribution of reservoirs, seal and source rocks. Classical methods consist in identifying seismic discontinuities corresponding to the reflection terminations (downlap, toplap, onlap, and truncation) to define stratigraphic sequences and their system tracts. Such task is a labour intensive process mainly based on a limited number of auto-tracked horizons. Recently new approaches have been proposed to optimize this workflow. In this paper, we propose to analyze the thickness variations of a geological model, computed with a global approach based on a minimization process between the seismic relationships (Pauget et al 2009). Given the fact, the geological model is continous; the variation of the thickness can be computed for any seismic voxel. The thinning zones of the geological model enhance stratigraphic discontinuities and provides to the interpreter a high level of precision in the identification of the sequences. We have applied this method on the block F3, located in the Dutch sector of the North Sea, presenting relevant large-scale sigmoidal bedding. The analysis of the thickness attribute enhanced zones of convergence of the seismic reflections packages corresponding to the observed downlaps and toplaps. A sub division into stratigraphic sequences could be achieved by mapping and thresholding the thickness values. Convergence zones of the different reflection packages were modeled in three dimensions for a better understanding of the spatial depositional process. This case study has shown the rapidity, robustness and the accuracy of the geo-model approach in the analysis of the stratigraphic sequences. These results suggest that the method could be used to optimize the level of detection of subtle traps, seals and reservoirs, at an early stage in the interpretation process.

Abstract Sands penetrated at shallow depths (< 1 km) in the Gulf of Mexico can flow to the surface and undermine seafloor installations. Here we explore aspects of natural fluid expulsion structures from these "shallow-water sands". Highresolution seismic data shows no obvious sand injection structures from the Blue Unit, a shallow-water sand, in the Ursa area, but perhaps nascent dike formation. Also, channel sands stratigraphically above the Blue Unit are overpressured, with a possible pressure source in the latter. In the Ursa area the maximum principal stress is vertical and constrained by the integrated unit weight of the sediments at IODP Site U1324. The stress necessary to form hydrofractures (the minimum principal stress plus negligible tensional strength of the sediment) is about 85% of the maximum principal stress indicating an approximately isotropic state of stress. High Poisson's ratios (0.46-0.49), determined from wireline compressional and shear wave velocities at Site U1324, are also consistent with a nearly isotropic state of stress at shallow depths. Estimated maximum fluid pressures are about 80% of the total overburden stress, less than necessary to hydrofracture the sediment. Therefore, the fluid pressure is insufficient to form sand injectites. The formation of sand injectites, as observed in the geologic record, may require very high fluid pressures, approaching lithostatic values. Diverse orientations of ancient injectites support the necessity of very high fluid pressures and a nearly isotropic state of stress. Introduction Drilling operations in the Gulf of Mexico, especially in deep water, have encountered unconsolidated and overpressured sand at shallow depths. Once penetrated these sands flow into the wells, washout, erode around the exterior of casing strings, and locally flow to the surface [1]. Surface features associated with this ?shallow water flow' behavior include cracks, faults, and gully-like features [2]. In areas where this behavior has occurred, the seafloor appears to be undergoing subsidence associated with sediment loss at depth. In the Ursa drilling area (Figure 1) the shallow-water sands are overpressured which initiates the flow into the boreholes [1, 3]. The shallow-water sands in the Ursa area readily flow into boreholes and to the surface if the borehole is normally pressured (i.e. the hole is uncased or an underbalanced mud is used). Therefore, an obvious question is whether there are any natural injections from the shallow-water sands or other evidence of fluid flow. Given the overpressured nature of the shallow-water sands [3], naturally occurring injections and other fluid migration features could be expected. These "injectites" are common in some petroleum systems where they complicate sand reservoir geometry and have important implications for hydrocarbon production [4]. Because fluid pressure and sand geometries are well-constrained, the Ursa area may be an important natural laboratory to ascertain the limiting fluid pressure and stress conditions for the occurrence of injectites and other fluid flow features. Aux genereux tarifs de rachat mis en place pour favoriser le developpement de l’eolien et du photovoltaique, et aux subventions requises pour garantir les capacites d’appoint (par ailleurs fortement emettrices de CO2) necessaires a l’equilibre du systeme electrique, il faut ajouter le developpement des reseaux de transport de l’electricite des lieux de production vers les lieux de consommation (en Allemagne, la longueur necessaire serait de 4 500 km).La construction couteuse de ces reseaux se heurte a l’opposition des populations, a tel point que l’Allemagne n’a pu construire en dix ans que 100 km de ces nouvelles lignes...Enfin, le renforcement des interconnexions entre les Etats europeens encourage chacun d’entre eux, comme l’Allemagne ou le Danemark, a faire supporter par ses voisins l’intermittence resultant de ses seules decisions politiques nationales. In Germany, 4.500 km of lines are needed. The steep investments required for this have run up against opposition from public opinion with, as a consequence, the construction in ten years of only 100 km of new lines. Furthermore, reinforced interconnections between EU member states have led each country, such as Germany or Denmark, to transfer onto its neighbors the responsibility for coping with the intermittence of production that ensues from its own national decisions. After the European euro crisis, will there be an electricity crisis ?

Evidence of fluid flow features and their mechanisms of migration through the sedimentary pile are a known phenomenon on continental margins. It has been widely studied over the past twenty years, notably due to the improved resolution of seismic data and the abundance of data in these areas due to oil and gas exploration.The Lower Congo basin, offshore West Africa, is a prolific petroleum province that has been extensively studied, and has been in operation for over 30 years. The area of interest is located above a producing oil field (the Moho license), in which hydrocarbons are trapped in turbidite channels. The work is primarily based on the analysis of geophysical data including 3D and 2D-THR seismic, multibeam bathymetry and corresponding backscatter, as well as background data (samples taken from ROV photos, geochemical analyses).The analysis of this important seismic dataset revealed abundant evidence of fluid migration in the Mio-Pliocene sedimentary pile. They mainly correspond to indications of vertically focused migration, including current fluid expulsion structures on the seafloor, and buried structures, interpreted as fossile and indicating former activity of the fluid expulsion system. The studied fluid migration features mainly consist of pockmarks (depressions) and carbonate cementations. These two types of indicators can build vertical stacks, over several hundred meters, highlighting the durability of the fluid escapes and suggesting the development of real pipes.A new type of pockmarks has been discovered, the spider structures, which are located above a turbiditic reservoir, and which result from a focused migration of thermogenic hydrocarbons. They are related to gas hydrates, in the context of a sloping BSR (Bottom Simulating Reflector), due to the presence of the hydrate wedge. A dynamic model of their functioning is proposed, showing that these structures develop upslope, due to the gas migration under the sloping BSR. A study of the BSR, in the particular context of the hydrates wedge, allows to propose a model of gas escapes, linked to the dissociation of the hydrates, during a sea level fall. This model presents a dissociation of gas hydrates of regional scale (associated with biogenic gas), localized at the gas hydrate wedge zone of the last lowstand. Finally, the network of fluid escape structures of the Mio-Pliocene interval was investigated in order to understand its architecture and the mechanisms of fluid migration in the study area. Hydrocarbons appear to migrate mainly along certain portions of faults and vertically crosscutting the sedimentary pile through pipes or chimneys. The base of the Pliocene, associated with a sea level fall, marks the formation of the first paleo-spiders, as well as a level containing numerous evidence of gas. A model of this network of fluid migrations is proposed, integrating the indicators of hydrocarbon migrations through the sedimentary pile, and the major event of the Pliocene base. This study seems to indicate that a the sea level fall constitute a trigger for the fluids migrations, in the basin.This work thus marks the starting point of a larger-scale investigation which consists in, on the one hand, searching for similar structures (spiders and bands of pockmarks) in other basins ; and, on the other hand, by comparing fluid flow events with the eustatic curve.; Les structures d’échappement de fluides et leurs mécanismes de migration à travers la pile sédimentaire sont un phénomène connu sur les marges continentales. Elles ont été largement étudiées depuis une vingtaine d’années, notamment en raison de l’amélioration de la résolution des données sismiques, et de l’abondance des données dans ces zones, du fait de la prospection pétrolière. Le bassin du Bas Congo, au large de l'Afrique de l’ouest, est une province pétrolière prolifique qui a été largement étudiée et qui est exploitée depuis plus de 30 ans. La zone d’intérêt est située au-dessus d'un champ pétrolier producteur (la zone de Moho), dans laquelle les hydrocarbures sont piégés dans des chenaux turbiditiques. Le travail est principalement basé sur l'analyse de données géophysiques comprenant de la sismique 3D et 2D-THR, de la bathymétrie multifaisceaux et la rétrodiffusion correspondante, ainsi que des données de fond (échantillons prélevés, photos ROV, analyses géochimiques). L'analyse de cet important jeu de données sismiques a révélé de nombreuses évidences de migration de fluides dans la pile sédimentaire mio-pliocène. Ces dernières correspondent principalement à des indices de migration focalisée de fluides, incluant des structures actuelles d’expulsion de fluides sur le fond de l’eau et des structures enfouies, interprétées comme fossiles, et indiquant une activité ancienne du système d’expulsion de fluides. Les indices de migrations de fluides étudiés correspondent principalement à des pockmarks (dépressions) et à des cimentations carbonatées. Ces deux types d’indices peuvent s’empiler sur plusieurs centaines de mètres, mettant en évidence la pérennité des échappements et suggérant le développement de véritables conduits.Un nouveau type de pockmarks a été mis en évidence, les structures en araignée, qui sont localisées au-dessus d'un réservoir turbiditique, et qui résultent d'une migration focalisée des hydrocarbures thermogéniques. Leur fonctionnement est lié aux hydrates de gaz dans le contexte d’un BSR penté (Bottom Simulating Reflector), du fait de la présence du biseau des hydrates. Un modèle dynamique de leur fonctionnement est développé, montrant que ces structures se développent vers l'amont de la pente, du fait de la migration du gaz sous le BSR penté. Une étude du BSR, dans le contexte particulier du biseau des hydrates, permet de proposer un modèle des échappements de gaz liés à la dissociation des hydrates, lors d'une baisse du niveau marin. Ce modèle met en scène une dissociation des hydrates de gaz d'échelle régionale (associée à du gaz biogénique), localisée au niveau du biseau des hydrates du dernier bas niveau marin. Enfin, le réseau de structures d’échappements de fluides de l’intervalle Mio-Pliocène a été investigué dans le but de comprendre son architecture et les mécanismes de migration de fluides dans la zone d’étude. Les hydrocarbures semblent migrer principalement le long de certaines portions de failles et verticalement à travers la pile sédimentaire sous forme de « pipes » ou de cheminées. La base du Pliocène, associée à une baisse du niveau marin, marque la formation des premières paléo-araignées ainsi que d'un niveau contenant de nombreux indices de présence de gaz. Un modèle de ce réseau de migrations de fluides est proposé, intégrant les chemins de migrations des hydrocarbures à travers la pile sédimentaire, et l’événement majeur de la base Pliocène. Cette étude semble indiquer que les phases de baisse du niveau marin constituent des déclencheurs pour la migrations des fluides dans les bassins.Ce travail marque ainsi le point de départ d'une investigation à plus grande échelle qui consiste d'une part à rechercher des structures similaires (araignées et bandes de pockmarks) dans d'autres bassins et d'autres part à comparer les événements d'échappement de fluides à la courbe eustatique.

Sand intrusions (or injectites) are most often the product of post-depositional remobilization of sand leading to its injection into the surrounding rocks. While injectites were recognized for the first time nearly 200 years ago, their emplacement process has been studied for a couple of decades only, since the concepts of deep sea depositional environments have allowed us to better understand their emplacement processes. However, these processes are still relatively poorly understood. Our approach is based on the study of injectites in the Lower Congo Basin from seismic and well data, which we compare to a fossil system in the SE France basin. We have shown that: (1) In buried turbidite channel systems draping deposits on the channel flanks and terraces of channels have the same geophysical signature as 'wing-like' injectites. Finally, the only criterion for identifying seismic injectites is the presence of bedding-discordant seismic reflections, and in the best case the associated uplift of the overlying seismic reflectors. (2) Seismic-scale conical and saucer-shaped sand injectites have been identified in the Lower Congo Basin. The remobilization is likely due to overpressuring induced by the buoyancy effect of hydrocarbons trapped in the margins of a lobe buried underneath 160 m of sediment, followed by the sudden injection of fluidized sand associated with fault reactivation of faults (with a possible role of nearby salt diapirs). (3) A network of injectites (dykes, sills/wings and laccoliths) was formed in the Vocontian basin during the late Albian and/or early Cenomanian, from a lower-middle Albian turbidite channel. The emplacement is probably due to the early compartmentalization of the channel during its burial and the increase of the sedimentation rate generating overpressure; and the subsequent large influx of deep fluids triggering injection. The injection of sand was polyphased: a first episode formed the sills and another emplaced the dykes. Sills/wings and dykes propagated about 2 km laterally away from the parent sand body and about 200 m up to the surface, revealing a much more extended lateral than vertical reach, contrary to the classically accepted idea from the interpretation of seismic data. (4) The emplacement of this large network of injectites was governed by hydrofracturing. Therefore, its morphology is dependent on the host rock heterogeneity (isotropy, fractures), the paleo-stress orientation (ó3 = NW-SE) and the burial depth of the source (300-600 m) at the time of injection. The study of this fossil network allows us to define the relationship between morphology of the injected network and stress state at the time of injection. This relationship can be extrapolated to constrain the morphology of subsurface networks beyond seismicvisibility. (5) Sands injected into low permeability lithologies bear evidence to a major event of fluid escape in the studied basin, but also channeled fluids long after their formation. In this way, injectites both attest to specific episodes of fluid migration in sedimentary basins and contribute to long-lived re-routing of migrating fluids once emplaced. The injection of sand is associated with the sudden escape of fluids, probably resulting from a significant tectonic and/or sedimentary event; in addition, the architecture of injectite networks is governed by the local paleo-stress and heterogeneity in the host rock. Consequently, characterizing injectite networks is an important step in understanding the plumbing systems of continental margins, i.e. the post-depositional evolution of sedimentary basins., Les intrusions sableuses (ou injectites) sont le plus souvent le produit de la remobilisation post-dépositionnelle des sédiments et de l'injection du sable dans les roches environnantes. Bien que reconnues pour la première fois il y a près de 200 ans, elles ne sont réellement étudiées que depuis quelques dizaines d'années, depuis que les concepts sur les environnements de dépôt dans les domaines marins profonds nous permettent de mieux comprendre les processus de mise en place. Cependant, ces processus restent encore aujourd'hui relativement mal compris. Notre approche repose sur l'étude d'injectites dans le bassin du Bas-Congo a partir de données de sismique et de puits que nous comparerons a un système fossile dans le bassin du SE de la France. Nous avons montre que : (1) Dans des systèmes de chenaux turbiditiques enfouis, les dépôts de drapage sur les marges et terrasses de chenaux présentent la même signature géophysique que les injectites de type "wing". Finalement, le seul critère sismique d'identification des injectites est la présence de réflexions sismiques sécantes vis-a-vis de la stratigraphie associée dans le meilleur des cas au soulèvement des réflecteurs sismiques sus-jacents. (2) Des injectites d'échelle sismique en forme de cône et d'assiette ont été identifiées dans le bassin du Bas-Congo. La remobilisation résulte probablement des pressions anormales induites par l'effet de flottabilité des hydrocarbures piégés dans les marges d'un lobe enfoui sous 160 m de sédiment, puis de l'injection soudaine du sable fluidise associée a la réactivation de failles (possible rôle des diapirs de sel a proximité). (3) Un réseau d'injectites (dykes, sills/wings et laccolites) s'est formé dans le bassin Vocontien entre la fin de l'Albien supérieur et/ou le début du Cénomanien, depuis un chenal turbiditique de l'Albien inférieur-moyen. La mise en place résulte probablement de la compartimentalisation précoce du chenal au cours de son enfouissement et de l'augmentation du taux de sédimentation générant la surpression et de l'apport ulterieur d'importante quantité de fluides profonds déclenchant l'injection. L'injection du sable a été polyphasée : une première injection a formé des sills et une suivante des dykes. Les sills/wings et les dykes se sont propagés latéralement au chenal source sur environ 2 km et vers la surface sur environ 200 m, mettant en évidence une forte remobilisation latérale plutôt que verticale, contrairement a l'idée classiquement admise a partir de l'interprétation des données sismiques. (4) La formation de ce large réseau d'injectites a été gouvernée par des mécanismes d'hydrofracturation. Par conséquent, sa morphologie a été dépendante des hétérogenéités de la roche hôte (milieu isotrope, fracture), des directions de paléo-contraintes (ƒÐ3 = NWSE) et de la profondeur d'enfouissement de la source (300-600 m) au moment de l'injection. L'étude de ce réseau fossile permet de définir les relations entre morphologie du réseau injecté et état de contraintes au moment de l'injection. Cette relation peut être extrapolée de façon à contraindre la morphologie des réseaux de subsurface au-delà de la visibilité sismique. (5) Les sables injectés dans des lithologies de faible perméabilité témoignent d'un épisode d'échappement de fluide important dans les bassins étudiés mais ont aussi guide les fluides longtemps après leur formation. Les injectites contribuent ainsi a l'initiation épisodique et la pérennisation de migrations de fluides dans les bassins sedimentaires. Le processus d'injection est associé a l'échappement brutal de fluides, résultant vraisemblablement d'un évènement tectonique et/ou sédimentaire important, et l'architecture des réseaux d'injectites est gouverné par les paléo-contraintes locales et les hétérogénéités de la roche hôte. Par conséquent, la caractérisation des réseaux d'injectites est une étape importante dans la compréhension de la plomberie des marges, c'est-a-dire l'évolution post-dépôt des bassins sédimentaires.
