In this study, our aim was to assess several traits of cavity‐nesting Hymenopteran taxa in a low‐intensity agricultural landscape in Transylvania. The study took place between May and August 2018 at eight study sites in the hilly mountainous central part of Romania, where the majority of the landscape is used for extensive farming or forestry. During the processing of the trap nest material, we recorded several traits regarding the nests of different cavity‐nesting Hymenopteran taxa and the spider prey found inside the nests of the spider‐hunting representatives of these taxa. We also evaluated the relationship between the edge density and proportion of low‐intensity agricultural areas surrounding the study sites and some of these traits. The majority of nests were built by the solitary wasp genus Trypoxylon, followed by the solitary wasp taxa Dipogon and Eumeninae. Solitary bees were much less common, with Hylaeus being the most abundant genus. In the nests of Trypoxylon, we mostly found spider prey from the family of Araneidae, followed by specimens from the families of Linyphiidae and Theridiidae. In the nests of Dipogon, we predominantly encountered spider prey from the family of Thomisidae. We found significant effects of low‐intensity agricultural areas for the genera of Auplopus, Megachile, Osmia, and the Thomisid prey of Dipogon. We also found that the spider prey of Trypoxylon was significantly more diverse at study sites with higher proportions of low‐intensity agricultural areas. Our results indicate that solitary bees seem to be more abundant in areas, where the influence of human activities is stronger, while solitary wasps seem to rather avoid these areas. Therefore, we suggest that future studies not only should put more effort into sampling in low‐intensity agricultural landscapes but also focus more on solitary wasp taxa, when sampling such an area., Nowadays, most regions of the European Union face an increasing agricultural intensification and urbanization, which partially caused a dramatic decline of insect diversity in the last few decades. However, even in the European Union, there are still a few regions and areas remaining, which are not under such a strong human influence and still harbor a considerably high insect diversity, like our study area, located in the central part of Romania. In our study, we found several new aspects concerning the diversity and distribution of solitary bees, wasps, and the spider‐hunting wasps' prey and also the effects of landscape context on these groups.

Wasps of the family Pompilidae are recognized for their specialization in spider hunting, where females actively look for spiders to feed their offspring. However, both hunting and nesting behavior are remarkably variable among species. Such variations include different strategies like solitary nesting, communal aggregations or cleptoparasitism. Nonetheless, aspects of the ecology and taxonomy of species are either incomplete or fully missing, especially in most Neotropical species. Here, we provide aspects of the nesting and hunting ecology of Auplopus auripilus occurring in southern Mexico. Moreover, we present the taxonomical description of both sexes of A. auripilus, emphasizing on the male, which was previously undescribed. We found mud nests of A. auripilus attached to bromeliad plants in a rustic coffee plantation. The cells were provisioned with a single jumping spider Paraphidippus aurantius with amputated legs. After 21 days of rearing, adult wasps of A. auripilus, the cleptoparasite Irenangelus eberhardi and the brown lacewing Micromus sp. emerged from the nests. The golden pubescence and the polished pygidial area are the main characters differentiating A. auripilus from other Auplopus occurring in Mexico and Central America. Our study provides missing information to the ecology and taxonomy of A. auripilus. These findings will contribute to support future studies focused on patterns of distribution, test ecological and evolutionary hypotheses and gain a better comprehension of the role of these wasps across Neotropical ecosystems.

Auplopus viridis (Smith) COLOMBIA: Valle de Cauca Department, Santiago de Cali; 16 January 2021; V. Vieda. Host: Unidentified species (Anyphaenidae), adult or subadult female. The wasp grasped the immobilized ghost spider’s spinnerets with her mandibles while straddling it venter to venter. The left hindleg and right hind-, third and second legs were amputated at the coxa-trochanter joints (Vieda 2021). The description of A. viridis reported from Colombia by Banks (1946) and represented in our host record may not be the same A. viridis (Smith, 1864) originally described from São Paulo, Brazil, as discussed by Banks (1946). New and unusual host records for 133 species and subspecies of Pompilidae predominantly from the southwestern United States, Mexico, Central America, and South America are presented in modified taxonomic order. First-time species host records are given for Calopompilus Ashmead, Pepsis Fabricius, Hemipepsis Dahlbom, Priocnessus Banks, Entypus Dahlbom, Pompilocalus Roig-Alsina, Sphictostethus Kohl, Auplopus Spinola, Ageniella Banks, Eragenia Banks, Aporus Spinola, Poecilopompilus Ashmead, Tachypompilus Ashmead, Anoplius Dufour, Priochilus (Fabricius) and Notocyphus Smith. Chaenotetrastichus neotropicalis sp. nov. from the Atlantic Forest, Brazil, is described and illustrated. This new species is associated with a species of the pompilid wasp Auplopus Spinola (Hymenoptera: Pompilidae) and it represents the first record of the genus for the Neotropics. A key for the extant species of the genus Chaenotetrastichus Graham is also presented.

1. Ageniella is a species-rich group of spider wasps restricted to the New World. Knowledge regarding the behaviour of this genus is based mainly on the Nearctic species, which have been reported to nest solitarily in the soil. This study reports for the first time the nesting behaviour, with host association of Ageniella (Lissagenia) flavipennis Banks. 2. Behavioural aspects on the nesting of A. flavipennis were observed from a study of six nests found in an Atlantic Forest conservation area in Sao Paulo State, Brazil. Host specimens were collected from a nest, as well as while being carried by an A. flavipennis individual. 3. The present study reports the A. flavipennis females cohabiting or nesting solitarily in mud nests, indicating that this spider wasp shows some lower level of parasociality. In addition, the spider Enoploctenus cyclothorax (Bertkau) was reported for the first time as host. As has been observed for other Ageniellini, females of A. flavipennis amputate the host's legs and transport the spider to the nest, flying or walking forward. 4. Communal behaviour has been reported for species of different genera of Pompilidae, such as Macromeris Lepeletier, Paragenia Bingham and Auplopus Spinola. Recent phylogenetic analyses suggest that the Lissagenia species are more closely related to the other Ageniellini genera than to the other Ageniella species. The present information on nesting and prey could contribute towards a more conclusive phylogenetic position of Lissagenia.

Urban areas, as cities, are frequently overlooked as refuges for the native fauna. However, these places may support several species and house relevant biodiversity contributing to important ecosystemic functions. Wasps and bees (Hymenoptera: Apocrita) are important faunistic elements acting as predators/parasitoids and pollinators, respectively. Therefore, they must be surveyed and inventoried for conservation purposes, especially in cities located in the Atlantic Forest domain, a ravaged Brazilian biome. Accordingly, this study presents a species list of trap-nesting bees and wasps that occurs at the Jardim Botânico do Rio de Janeiro. The survey was conducted using the trap-nest method. Three types of trap-nests were offered totalizing 1,038 traps: rubber hose, bamboo cane and plastic straw. The plastic straw traps were the most effective followed by the bamboo cane ones at attracting nesting wasps and bees. Between April/2017 and February/2019, 12 foundress species built nests: Tetrapedia curvitarsis (Apidae) (33nests), Hylaeussp. (Colletidae)(6), Auplopus cf. rufipes (Pompilidae)(5), Trypoxylonsp. (Crabronidae)(4), Pachodynerus nasidens (Vespidae)(3), Auplopus cf. brasiliensis (Pompilidae), Megachile benigna and Megachilesp. (Megachilidae), Euglossa pleosticta, Euglossasp., and Eufrieseasp. (Apidae) and Penepodiumsp. (Sphecidae) all with one nest. Also, four natural enemies were recorded: Chaenotetrastichus neotropicalis (Eulophidae), Gasteruption brachychaetum (Gasterupteiidae), Caenochrysis crotonis (Chrysididae) and Amobiasp. (Diptera: Sarcophagidae). Most bee nests were restrained to the matrix forest and nearby areas, whereas wasps built their nests predominantly in open areas. Regarding seasonality, bees tended to nest in the summer and early autumn influenced by mean temperature, in contrast of wasps that nested in late autumn, winter and spring, influenced by pluviosity. Besides many rare species, which suggests environmental disturbance, the Jardim Botânico do Rio de Janeiro showed a fairly diverse fauna and shows how forest fragment in cities may harbour important representatives of the native fauna.

Auplopus rectus (Haupt, 1927) is newly recorded from Poland. It was found on sandy site near Smołdzino, on the border of Słowiński National Park — the most northerly known locality of this species. The distribution of A. rectus in Central Europe and potential spreading are discussed.
