3. Urban influence on convective precipitation in the Paris region: Hectometric ensemble simulations in a case study.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of the urban environment of the Paris region on an isolated convective cell that formed downwind of the city on May 7, 2022, using the Meso‐NH research atmospheric model at a horizontal scale of 300 m. To account for all sources of forecast uncertainty, the initial and lateral boundary conditions of the simulations are provided by an ensemble prediction system. A multi‐layer urban scheme is used to represent the influence of buildings on the airflow accurately. Two sets of ensemble simulations are performed: the first set (URB) uses a fine‐scale surface description of the city, while the second set (NOURB) replaces urban surfaces with vegetation. This sensitivity test shows that, despite the high variability of simulated precipitation within the ensemble, the city of Paris plays a statistically significant role in the initiation of convection in this case. Convective cells are initiated over the city for several members of the URB ensemble, while almost no precipitation is simulated for the same members of the NOURB ensemble. The mean 6‐h rainfall accumulation of the URB ensemble is increased by 70% over Paris (compared with the NOURB ensemble) and no statistically significant trend is found around the city. The analysis reveals that the capital experiences a higher sensible heat flux due to drier and warmer air, resulting in enhanced vertical velocities and an increase in boundary‐layer height in the URB ensemble. Additionally, the total water content and cloud fraction over Paris are intensified, leading to more precipitation. 4. Radar based high resolution ensemble precipitation analyses over the French Alps.

Abstract

Reliable estimation of precipitation fields at high resolution is a key issue for snow cover modelling in mountainous areas, where the density of precipitation networks is far too low to capture their complex variability with topography. Adequate quantification of the remaining uncertainty in precipitation estimates is also necessary for further assimilation of complementary snow observations in snow models. Radar observations provide spatialised estimates of precipitation with high spatial and temporal resolution, and are often combined with rain gauge observations to improve the accuracy of the estimate. However, radar measurements suffer from significant shortcomings in mountainous areas (in particular, unrealistic spatial patterns due to ground clutter). Precipitation fields simulated by high-resolution numerical weather prediction (NWP) models provide an alternative estimate, but suffer from systematic biases and positioning errors. Even though these uncertainties can be partially described by ensemble NWP systems and systematic errors can be reduced by statistical post-processing, NWP precipitation estimates are still not reliable enough for the requirements of high resolution snow cover modelling. In this study, better precipitation estimates are obtained through a specific analysis based on a combination of all these available products. First, a pre-processing step is proposed to mitigate the main deficiencies of radar and gauges precipitation estimation products, focusing on reducing unrealistic spatial patterns. This method also provides a spatialised estimate of the associated error in mountainous areas, based on a climatological analysis of both radar and NWP-estimated precipitation. Three ensemble daily precipitation analysis methods are then proposed, first using only the modified precipitation estimates and associated errors, then combining them with ensemble NWP simulations based on the Particle Filter and Ensemble Kalman Filter data assimilation algorithms. The performance of the different precipitation analysis methods is evaluated at a local scale using independent ski resort precipitation observations. The evaluation of the pre-processing step shows its ability to remove the main spatial artefacts coming from the radar measurements and to improve the precipitation estimates at the local scale. The local scale evaluations of the ensemble analyses do not demonstrate an additional benefit of ensemble NWP forecasts, but their contrasted spatial patterns are challenging to evaluate with the available data. 10. Ensemble precipitation analyses combining radar and NWP precipitation estimates over mountainous areas from 2 different filtering methods

Abstract

Reliable estimation of precipitation fields at high resolution is a key issue for snow cover modelling in mountainous areas where the density of precipitation observations networks is far too low to sample their complex variability with topography. An appropriate quantification of the remaining uncertainty is also necessary to be able to further assimilate complementary snow observations in the snow models. Precipitation fields simulated by high resolution numerical weather prediction models (NWP) suffer from systematic biases and positioning errors. These uncertainties are partially described by ensemble NWP systems and systematic errors can be reduced by statistical post processing. Radar observations also provide spatialized estimates of precipitation at high spatial and temporal resolutions, often combined with rain gauges observations, but with a variable spatial coverage and accuracy. In this context, better precipitation estimates can be obtained by a combination of all of these available products in an ensemble Data Assimilation system such as a particle filter (PF) or an Ensemble Kalman Filter (EnKF) to take advantage of their respective strengths. This contribution first provides an enhanced assessment of the quality of available precipitation estimates over the French Alps from PEAROME ensemble NWP system and ANTILOPE radar-based products, focusing on the quantification of the associated errors and their spatial distribution in order to adequately prescribe observation errors in DA algorithms. Two different ensemble DA methods based on the PF and the EnKF using the PEAROME as background are then proposed. Abstract

This paper presents the Meso-NH model version 5.4. Meso-NH is an atmospheric non hydrostatic research model that is applied to a broad range of resolutions, from synoptic to turbulent scales, and is designed for studies of physics and chemistry. It is a limited-area model employing advanced numerical techniques, including monotonic advection schemes for scalar transport and fourth-order centered or odd-order WENO advection schemes for momentum. The model includes state-of-the-art physics parameterization schemes that are important to represent convective-scale phenomena and turbulent eddies, as well as flows at larger scales. In addition, Meso-NH has been expanded to provide capabilities for a range of Earth system prediction applications such as chemistry and aerosols, electricity and lightning, hydrology, wildland fires, volcanic eruptions, and cyclones with ocean coupling. Here, we present the main innovations to the dynamics and physics of the code since the pioneer paper of Lafore et al. (1998) and provide an overview of recent applications and couplings.

Abstract

This PhD has explored the benefits of polarimetric variables (for centimeter wavelength radars), which are sensitive to the microphysical properties of hydrometeors, for convective scale numerical prediction models. In the first part of the PhD, a radar forward operator, consistent with the bulk 1 moment microphysical schemes typically used by the operational convective scale models, has been designed. Comparisons between observed and simulated variables for all radar types (S, C, X) have been performed for two convective cases, and helped validate the forward operator. Following these comparisons, quality controls have been specified so as to limitate the errors on the polarimetric variables before using them for assimilation. In the second part of the PhD, an assimilation method for polarimetric variables, based on the operational 1D+3D-Var assimilation method used for radar reflectivities in AROME model has been designed. The Bayesian retrieval of 1D humidity profiles has been adapted in order to include differential reflectivity and specific differential phase within the observation vector. Different options of the methodology have been tested and evaluated by comparisons with radar and GPS observations. Assimilation experiments conducted for two convective cases demonstrated an impact on analysed humidity fields. The effect of the assimilation of polarimetric variables on forecasted reflectivities and precipitation accumulations was also evaluated.; Cette thèse a permis d'explorer l'apport des variables polarimétriques radar (aux longueurs d'onde centimétriques), sensibles aux propriétés microphysiques des hydrométéores, pour les modèles de prévision numérique à échelle convective. Dans la première partie de la thèse, un opérateur d'observation radar polarimétrique, cohérent avec les paramétrisations microphysiques à 1 moment couramment utilisées par les modèles opérationnels à échelle convective a été développé. Des comparaisons entre données simulées et observées pour tous les types de radar (S, C et X) ont été réalisées pour deux cas d'étude convectifs, et ont permis de valider l'opérateur d'observation. La deuxième partie de cette thèse a été consacrée à la conception et au test d'une méthode d'assimilation des variables polarimétriques, s'appuyant sur la méthode opérationnelle 1D+3D-Var, d'assimilation des réflectivités radar dans le modèle AROME. La méthode de restitution bayésienne 1D des profils d'humidité a été adaptée, afin d'inclure la phase différentielle spécifique et la réflectivité différentielle, en plus de la réflectivité, dans le vecteur d'observation. Plusieurs options de la méthode de restitution ont été testées et évaluées par des comparaisons aux observations radar et GPS. Des expériences d'assimilation menées sur deux cas convectifs ont ensuite été réalisées et ont permis d'évaluer l'impact des observations polarimétriques sur les champs analysés d'humidité ainsi que sur les prévisions de réflectivité et de cumuls de précipitation.
