ISMD is the real time INGV Strong Motion database. During the recent August-September 2016 Amatrice, Mw 6.0, seismic sequence, ISMD represented the main tool for the INGV real time strong motion data sharing. Starting from August 24th, the main task of the web portal was to archive, process and distribute the strong-motion waveforms recorded by the permanent and temporary INGV accelerometric stations, in the case of earthquakes with magnitude ≥ 3.0, occurring in the Amatrice area and surroundings. At present (i.e. September 30th, 2016), ISMD provides more than 21,000 strong motion waveforms freely available to all users. In particular, about 2,200 strong motion waveforms were recorded by the temporary network installed for emergency in the epicentral area by SISMIKO and EMERSITO working groups. Moreover, for each permanent and temporary recording site, the web portal provide a complete description of the necessary information to properly use the strong motion data.

When compared to more seismically active regions, damaging earthquakes occur only occasionally in the central part of northern Italy. Nevertheless, the lack of a dense strong-motion network in this area was highlighted by the occurrence of the November 24, 2004, ML 5.2, Salò earthquake. In 2006, the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV) section of Milano-Pavia began the installation of new strong-motion stations in central-northern Italy. At present, the Strong-Motion Network of Northern Italy (RAIS; Rete Accelerometrica Italia Settentrionale) includes 22 stations with an average inter-distance of about 20 km. All of the stations are equipped with Kinemetrics Episensor FBA ES-T sensors coupled with 24-bit digital recorders. Starting from 2009, 14 strong-motion stations have been sending data to the INGV acquisition center in Milan, in real time using TCP/IP over wi-fi links. Another eight stations still work in dial-up mode and send data through GSM modems. The real-time connections allow the use of strong-motion data recorded by RAIS for the generation of shake maps for Italy, the implementation of which represents one of the main tasks of the last agreement between INGV and the Italian Civil Protection Department. The RAIS data is stored directly at the INGV section of Milano-Pavia, which was realized using the MiniSEED format: the data management and exchange are carried out by the SeisComP package with the SeedLink protocol. Metadata dissemination is achieved through the website http://rais.mi.ingv.it, where the strong-motion parameters related to each recorded and processed waveform are made available.

The aim of this study is the sharing of waveforms recorded by several Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV) temporary stations (managed by the Milan-Pavia section; INGV MI-PV). These stations were installed after the April 6, 2009, Mw 6.3, L'Aquila earthquake (central Italy). The work synthesizes the activities conducted in the field by the INGV MI-PV working group over the three months following the mainshock. The field activities were developed in four different phases that were defined according to their time periods. Starting from April 7, 2009, for the first phase, the temporary stations were installed in correspondence with the more damaged areas. The scope was to record the strongest aftershocks in the days that followed the mainshock. In this phase, the stations were composed of a six-component acquisition system that was coupled with both a weak-motion and a strong-motion sensor. After the first month, the last three phases of installation investigated the seismic responses of sites located in the epicentral area, involving villages within a radius of about 20 km from the epicenter of the April 6 mainshock. In this way, over four specific time-period phases, the stations were installed in sites with different lithological and geomorphological conditions. The instruments worked from April 7 to July 14, 2009; in this period, 9,155 aftershocks (134,262 accelerometric waveforms and 133,242 velocimetric waveforms), with ML ≤5.3 were recorded. This study describes the dataset of these earthquake waveforms recorded with both velocity and acceleration transducers. Selected waveforms are available through ftp://ftp.mi.ingv.it/download/RAIS-TS_rel01/, with their corresponding information concerning instrumental characteristics, installation sites, and earthquakes recorded.

On May 20, 2012, at 02:03 UTC, a Ml 5.9 reverse-fault earthquake occurred in the Emilia-Romagna region, northern Italy, at a hypocentral depth of 6.3 km (http://iside.rm.ingv.it/), close to the cities of Modena and Ferrara in the plain of the Po River. The epicenter was near the village of Finale Emilia where macroseismic intensity was assessed at 7 EMS98 [Tertulliani et al. 2012, this issue], while the closest accelerometric station, MRN, located less than 20 km west-ward at Mirandola (Figure 1) recorded peaks of ground accelerations of about 300 cm/s2 (www.protezionecivile.gov.it/resources/cms/documents/Report_DPC_1_Emilia_EQSd.pdf). The mainshock triggered liquefaction phenomena a few kilometers eastwards of the epicenter, around the village of San Carlo. On the same day, two other shocks of Ml 5.1 followed (02:07, 13:18 GMT; http://iside.rm.ingv.it/). On May 29, 2012, at 07:00 UTC another Ml 5.8 earthquake hit the region (http://iside.rm.ingv.it/), with the epicenter close to the village of Mirandola (Figure 1). Three other strong aftershocks occurred afterwards, of Ml 5.3 (May 29, at 10:55), Ml 5.2 (May 29, at 11:00) and Ml 5.1 (June 3, at 19:20). The Emilia seismic sequence resulted in 25 casualties, several of whom were among the workers in the many factories that collapsed during working hours, and there was extensive damage to monuments, public buildings, industrial sites, and private homes. […] Recently, an INGV working group developed the first version of a web portal with the aim of archiving, processing and distributing accelerometric data recorded by permanent and temporary INGV stations. This web portal (www.mi.ingv.it/ISMD/) is composed of two main modules: the former is known as the INGV Strong Motion Data (ISMD, www.mi.ingv.it/ISMD/ismd.html/) and has as its main scope the analyse and distribution in quasi-real time (a few hours after event occurrence) of the uncorrected accelerometric data, and the related metadata obtained after an automatic processing procedure. This latter, known as the Dynamic Archive (DYNA, http://dyna.mi.ingv.it/DYNA-archive/) is a dynamic database where manually post-processed accelerometric waveforms are provided, together with their metadata. Both of these archives are designed and structured in such a way that their compilations and updating will be almost completely automatic. At the end of May 2012, a first prototype of the ISMD module was published, providing the uncorrected strong-motion data recorded by the INGV stations for the main events of the Emilia seismic sequence. On May 20th 2012, at 02:03:52 UTC, a ML 5.9 (Mw 6.0) earthquake struck northern Italy (http://cnt.rm.ingv.it/). The epicentre was localized at 44.89˚ N and 11.23˚ E, in an area among the cities of Ferrara, Modena and Mantova. The event occurred at a depth of about 6.3 km, and was characterized by a reverse focal mechanism (http://cnt.rm.ingv.it/tdmt.html/). From May 20th, thousand of earthquakes, the strongest of which with a ML 5.8 (May 29th, 07:00:03 UTC), occurred in the same area (http://iside.rm.ingv.it/).This note presents a new web site, www.mi.ingv.it/ISMD/ismd.html/ (Figure 1) that includes about 2000 three-component strong-motion recordings of the events with 4.0 ≤ ML ≤ 5.9 occurred in the central part of the Pianura Padana Emiliana (northern Italy) from May 20th to June 12th. The data come from all INGV strong-motion stations installed in northern Italy (i.e. strong-motion stations of the National Seismic Network, RSN [Amato and Mele 2008]; Strong-Motion Network of Northern Italy, RAIS, http://rais.mi.ingv.it/ [Augliera et al. 2011]) and selected with a minimum latitude of 43.5˚ N. The earthquake locations reported in the web site come from the National Earthquake Centre of INGV (http://cnt.rm.ingv.it/).

On July 17, 2011, at 18:30:23 UTC, a ML 4.7 earthquake occurred on the east side of the Po Plain (northern Italy), between the towns of Ferrara and Rovigo. The epicentral coordinates provided by the National Earthquake Center of the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, INGV) were 45.01˚N and 11.41˚E (http://iside.rm.ingv.it/iside). The depth of the hypocenter was constrained at 8.1 km, corresponding to a buried active source that existed in the area. The source of the event was characterized by a predominant left-transverse focal mechanism, even if there was also an important reverse component. Although it did not produce relevant damage, the earthquake was clearly felt in an area of about 50 km radius around the epicenter. The maximum observed intensity was V on the Mercalli-Cancani-Sieberg (MCS) scale, with a predominant distribution of damage towards the north-west. This study provides an overview of the strong-motion waveforms of the mainshock as recorded by the RAIS (Rete Accelerometrica Italia Settentrionale) strong-motion network, in particular focusing on the recordings provided by the stations located in the central part of the basin, which were installed in correspondence with hundreds of soft sediments. The preliminary results show the relevant influence of the basin on the seismic wavefield, highlighting in particular a possible site-amplification phenomena, and also affecting the ground motion at long periods (T >1 s). The systematic underestimations provided by the empirical ground-motion predictive models calibrated for Italy in terms of acceleration response spectra up to 2.0 s support this hypothesis. The sharing of the 24 waveforms (in raw sac and ascii formats) recorded by RAIS is assured by the availability of the data at the ftp site: ftp://ftp.mi.ingv.it/download/RAIS-FR_rel01/.

This note focuses on the ground motion recorded during the recent moderate earthquakes that occurred in the central part of northern Italy (Panel 1), a region that is characterized by low seismicity. For this area, the Italian seismic hazard map [Stucchi et al. 2011] assigns a maximum horizontal acceleration (rock site) of up to 0.2 g (10% probability of being exceeded in 50 yr). In the last 4 yr, this region has been struck by 9 earthquakes in the magnitude range 4 ≤Mw ≤ 5.0, with the three largest located in the Northern Apennines (the Mw 4.9 and 5.0 Parma events, in December 2008 and January 2012) and on the Po Plain (the Mw 4.9 Reggio Emila event, in January 2012). The largest dataset ever recorded during a normal fault seismic sequence was acquired during the 2009 seismic emergency triggered by the damaging earthquake in L'Aquila (Italy). This was possible through the coordination of different rapid-response seismic networks in Italy, France and Germany. A seismic network of more than 60 stations recorded up to 70,000 earthquakes. Here, we describe the different open-data archives where it is possible to find this unique set of data for studies related to hazard, seismotectonics and earthquake physics. Moreover, we briefly describe some immediate and direct applications of emergency seismic networks. At the same time, we note the absence of communication platforms between the different European networks. Rapid-response networks need to agree on common strategies for network operations. Hopefully, over the next few years, the European Rapid-Response Seismic Network will became a reality.

Geophysical site investigations have been performed in association with deployment of a dense array of 95 3-component seismometers on the Cavola landslide in the Northern Apennines. The aim of the array is to study propagation of seismic waves in the heterogeneous medium through comparison of observation and modelling. The small-aperture array (130 m×56 m) operated continuously for three months in 2004. Cavola landslide consists of a clay body sliding over mudstone-shale basement, and has a record of historical activity, including destruction of a small village in 1960. The site investigations include down-hole logging of P- and S-wave travel times at a new borehole drilled within the array, two seismic refraction lines with both P-wave profiling and surface-wave analyses, geo-electrical profiles and seismic noise measurements. From the different approaches a consistent picture of the depths and seismic velocities for the landslide has emerged. Their estimates agree with resonance frequencies of seismic noise, and also with the logged depths to basement of 25 m at a new borehole and of 44 m at a pre-existing borehole. Velocities for S waves increase with depth, from 230 m/s at the surface to 625 m/s in basement immediately below the landslide.

Recent seismological studies contribute to better understand the first order characteristics of earthquake occurrence in Italy, identifying the potential sites for moderate to large size earthquakes. Ad hoc passive seismic experiments performed in these areas provide information to focus on the location and geometry of the active faults more closely. This information is relevant for assessing seismic hazard and for accurately constraining possible ground shaking scenarios. The area around the Città di Castello Basin, in the Northern Apennines (Central Italy), is characterized by the absence of instrumental seismicity (M > 2.5), it is adjacent to faults ruptured by recent and historical earthquakes. To better understand the tectonics of the area, we installed a dense network of seismic stations equipped with broadband and short period seismometers collecting data continuously for 8 months (October 2000-May 2001). The processing of ~ 900 Gbyte of data revealed a consistent background seismicity consisting of very low magnitude earthquakes (ML < 3.2). Preliminary locations of about 2200 local earthquakes show that the area can be divided into two regions with different seismic behaviour: an area to the NW, in between Sansepolcro and Città di Castello, where seismicity is not present. An area toward the SE, in between Città di Castello, Umbertide and Gubbio, where we detected a high microseismicity activity. These findings suggest a probable different mechanical behaviour of the two regions. In the latter area, the seismicity is confined between 0 and 8 km of depth revealing a rather well defined east-dipping, low angle fault 35 km wide that cuts through the entire upper crust down to 12-15 km depth. Beside an apparent structural complexity, fault plane solutions of background seismicity reveal a homogeneous pattern of deformation with a clear NE-SW extension.

A site response experiment was performed in the basin of Città di Castello (a small town in Central Italy) in May 2001. This study is part of a project on the evaluation of seismic hazard in seismogenic areas funded by the Gruppo Nazionale Difesa dai Terremoti (GNDT). The experiment consisted of a dense fixed transect configuration with most of the stations recording in continuous mode, and several ambient noise measurements both in single station and in array configuration spread over the investigated area. The dense transect was composed of 26 seismic stations in a crosswise configuration with a maximum inter-station distance of 250 m. The stations were deployed in the southern part of the basin, from the eastern bedrock outcrop to the western edge, across the town. About 70 earthquakes were recorded during 10 days of deployment, generally low magnitude or regional events. We located 23 earthquakes and 17 of them were located using the waveform similarity approach at 4 stations outside the target area. These 4 stations were part of a dense temporary seismic network involved in a previous experiment of the same project, aimed at performing a high-resolution picture of the local seismicity. Delay analysis on the recorded waveforms allowed us to infer the basin geometry at depth and estimate the S-wave velocity of sediments. Moreover, we evaluated relative site response along the E-W transect by performing a standard spectral ratio. Amplification factors up to 9 are found inside the basin; at frequencies above 5 Hz stations closer to the edges show higher amplification, whereas stations located in the middle of the basin, where the alluvial sediments are thicker (CD11-CD14), show higher amplification below 5 Hz. We considered the average amplification in two frequency bands (1-5 Hz and 5-10 Hz), representative of the resonance frequency for 2-3 storey buildings and 1 storey houses,respectively. Our results suggest that the potential hazard for 2-3 storey buildings is higher in the center of the basin (amplification factor up to 6), and for 1 storey houses is higher at the edges (amplification factor up to 5).

In the framework of the pilot project for CO2 geo-sequestration in the depleted gas storage field of Cortemaggiore (Po Plain, northern Italy), started by the Italian company STOGIT in 2004, a surface seismic monitoring has been planned. The monitoring aims to detect possible changes, especially in microseismicity of the area, caused by the injection activity designed to achieve CO2 geo-sequestration at 1000-1500 m of depth. The monitoring focuses on the ground motion produced by small-magnitude, shallowdepth seismic events. The Milano department of the "Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia" is taking part in the project through the installation of a seismic network, consisting of three surface and four 100-m deep borehole sensors, located at distances ranging from 0.5 to 3.5 km from the planned injection point. In this work, we analyze the data recorded from May 2010 to April 2012, in order to determine the noise levels of the area and the detection capabilities of the network. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
