Abstract

In recent years, nitrate has emerged as a significant groundwater pollutant due to its potential ecotoxicity. In particular, nitrate contamination of brackish groundwater poses a serious threat to both ecosystems and human health and remains difficult to treat. A promising, sustainable, and environmentally friendly solution when biological treatments are not applicable is the conversion of nitrate to harmless nitrogen (N2) or ammonia (NH3) as a nutrient by electrocatalytic nitrate reduction (eNO3R) using solar photovoltaic energy. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the current advances in eNO3R for the production of nitrogen and ammonia. The discussion begins with fundamental concepts, including a detailed examination of the mechanisms and pathways involved, supported by Density Functional Theory (DFT) to elucidate specific aspects of ammonium and nitrogen formation during the process. Furthermore, the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) offers promising advancements in enhancing the predictive power of DFT, accelerating the discovery and optimization of novel catalysts. In this review, we also explore various electrode preparation methods and emphasize the importance of in situ characterization techniques to investigate surface phenomena during the reaction process. The review highlights numerous examples of copper-based catalysts and analyses their feasibility and effectiveness in ammonia production. It also explores strategies for the conversion of nitrate to N2, focusing on nanoscale zerovalent iron as a selective material and the subsequent oxidation of the produced ammonia. Finally, this review addresses the implementation of the eNO3R process for the treatment of brackish groundwater, discussing various challenges and providing reasonable opinions on how to overcome these obstacles. By synthesizing current research and practical examples, this review highlights the potential of eNO3R as a viable solution to mitigate nitrate pollution and improve water quality. Abstract

We use hexagonal mesophases made of oil-swollen surfactant-stabilized tubes arranged on a triangular lattice in water and doped with metallic salts as templates for the radiolytic synthesis of nanostructures. The nanostructures formed in this type of soft matrix are bimetallic palladium-platinum porous nanoballs composed of 3D-connected nanowires, of typical thickness 2.5 nm, forming hexagonal cells. We demonstrate using electron microscopy and small-angle X-ray scattering that the pore size of the nanoballs is directly determined by the diameter of the oil tube of the doped mesophases, which we have varied in a controlled fashion from 10 to 55 nm. Bimetallic nanostructures comprising various proportions of palladium and platinum can be synthesized. Their alloy structure was evidenced by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and high-angular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy experiments. Our templating approach allows therefore the synthesis of bimetallic nanoballs of tunable porosity and composition.

Abstract

International audience; In France, around 3.5 million cattle are slaughtered each year, which represents 1.3 million tons of beef carcasses. However, waste due essentially to organoleptic defects is estimated at 3.4% of the production or 45,000 tons of beef carcasses. Microbiological contamination and color are the two major causes of defect. In order to prevent color defect, a study was performed to develop a new method for measuring rapidly and instantly the redox potential as an indicator of color changes in carcasses without slowing down the slaughter line. This measurement would allow to classify them upstream according to their time of colors changes in order to sort them and to avoid food waste in the future. Meat juice has been shown to be a good mimetic medium for the study of color changes. The effect of different parameters was studied in order to fix experimental conditions. Color change is faster in the juice than in the meat and faster at 20 • C than at 4 • C. Redox potential allows following color changes and a symmetry has been highlighted between this thermodynamic measure and color changes.

Abstract

In this paper, the modeling and the optimization of the removal efficiency of ketoprofen (KTP) by the electrocoagulation process were studied. The central composite design experiments (CCD) method was used to study the main effects and the interaction effects between operational parameters and to optimize the value of each parameter. According to the regression equation obtained, the current density appears to be one of the most important parameters (b2 = +22.11) controlling the removal efficiency of KTP. The positive sign of b2 coefficient suggests that the increase of current density increases the yield of removal. The second significant parameter with a negative effect was the initial KTP concentration (b3 = −16.27). This result suggests that the removal efficiency was inversely proportional to the initial concentration. In addition, according to the model, the most influencing interactions were pH-current density, pH-initial concentration, and current density-initial concentration. The model obtained by CCD led to the following optimal conditions for KTP removal efficiency (96.70%): pH = 7, i = 24.04 mA cm−2, and C0 = 5 mg L−1. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The effect of acid-basic treatments of date stones on lead adsorption was investigated. The physicochemical properties of this low-cost adsorbent were characterized by N2 adsorption and mass titration. The date stones sample, treated with HNO3, possess the highest surface oxygen containing functional groups (2.1 mmol/g), surface area (115 m2/g), and pore volume (0.048 cm3/g) and the more adsorption capacity to the lead(II) ions. The effect of contact time, initial concentrations of adsorbate, ionic strength, and adsorbent dose on the uptake of lead was studied in batch experiments. The sorption process was found to follow Redlich-Peterson isotherm and pseudo-second-order rate kinetics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
