Differences in audiovisual integration are commonly observed in autism. Temporal binding windows (TBWs) of audiovisual speech can be trained (i.e., narrowed) in non-autistic adults; this study evaluated a computer-based perceptual training in autistic youth and assessed whether treatment outcomes varied according to individual characteristics. Thirty autistic youth aged 8-21 were randomly assigned to a brief perceptual training (n = 15) or a control condition (n = 15). At post-test, the perceptual training group did not differ, on average, on TBWs for trained and untrained stimuli and perception of the McGurk illusion compared to the control group. Purpose: The spectral powers of the modulations of vocal fundamental frequency (fo) less than 3 Hz (low-frequency power, LFP) and between 3 and 8 Hz (middle-frequency power, MFP) had been established to indicate the audiovocal feedback status and vocal efficiency of a speaker, and a resonant voice may enhance the auditory-vocal feedback. This study aims to determine whether the auditory feedback can be augmented by a forward and resonant voice and therefore contribute to the modulations of [f.sub.o] variability. Method: Vocal signals and accelerometric signals of lateral nasal cartilage were obtained from 27 healthy adults who, respectively, sustained vowels /a/ and /i/ with their habitual speaking voice and with a forward-focused voice under three auditory conditions: natural hearing (N0), high-level noise exposure (N90), and low-level noise exposure (N60). Nasal skin vibrations were measured using a nasal accelerometry to reflect voice resonance status. Vocal intensity and [f.sub.o] variability were also analyzed to show the auditory-vocal interactions under varied conditions of auditory feedback and voice resonance. Results: In both N0 and N90 conditions, forward-focused voice showed a significantly lower LFP than the speakers' habitual voice. In addition, LFP of fo would significantly increase during natural voice production as the voice feedback was greatly masked by high-intensity noise; however, with a forward-focused voice, the noise-induced variation in LFP was significantly decreased. Under N90, MFP significantly decreased during forward-focused voice production compared with that measured during natural voice production. The stability of [f.sub.o] modulations was not adversely affected by N60. Purpose: Auditory-perceptual evaluation is essential for the assessment of voice quality. The Consensus Auditory-Perceptual Evaluation of Voice (CAPE-V) provides a standardized protocol and assessment form for clinicians to analyze the voice quality and has been adapted into several different languages. The aims of this study were to develop the Japanese version of the CAPE-V and to investigate its reliability and validity. Method: The Japanese CAPE-V consisted of the same three speech contexts (vowels, sentences, and conversation) as developed in the original English version. The sentences were designed according to the concepts of the original version and reviewed by Japanese phoneticians. To validate the usefulness of the Japanese CAPE-V, voices of 173 Japanese-speaking subjects (76 subjects with dysphonia and 97 without voice complaints) were evaluated by five experienced judges, according to the Japanese CAPE-V as well as the GRBAS (Grade, Roughness, Breathiness, Asthenia, Strain) scale. Results: The Japanese CAPE-V provided a high interrater reliability (intraclass correlation coefficients [ICCs] > .85 for all the parameters) as well as a high intrarater reliability (ICCs > .85 for all the parameters). In addition, overall severity, roughness, and breathiness in the Japanese CAPE-V were highly correlated with the corresponding dimensions in the GRBAS scale, having Spearman correlation coefficients greater than .8. Purpose: This study assesses the impact of patient clinical history on audiologists' performance when interpreting auditory brainstem response (ABR) results. Method: Fourteen audiologists' accuracy in estimating hearing threshold for 16 infants through interpretation of ABR traces was compared on 2 occasions at least 5 months apart. On the 1st occasion, ABR traces were presented to the audiologists with no clinical information except for the age of the child. On the 2nd occasion, audiologists were given a full clinical history for the ABR cases. Results: The addition of clinical history information had no statistically significant impact on sensitivity, specificity, or accuracy of diagnosis. Although the mean numbers of true-negative and true-positive diagnoses were higher when audiologists were given clinical information, the difference was again not statistically significant. Conclusion: This study suggests that if there are circumstances in which case material is incomplete or unavailable, audiologists have no cause for concern regarding the accuracy of their interpretation of ABR traces. In many psychophysical experiments, the participant's task is to detect small changes along a given stimulus dimension or to identify the direction (e.g., upward vs. downward) of such changes. The results of these experiments are traditionally analyzed with a constant-variance Gaussian (CVG) model or a high-threshold (HT) model. Here, the authors demonstrate that for changes along three basic sound dimensions (frequency, intensity, and amplitude-modulation rate), such models cannot account for the observed relationship between detection thresholds and direction-identification thresholds. It is shown that two alternative models can account for this relationship. One of them is based on the idea of sensory quanta; the other assumes that small changes are detected on the basis of Poisson processes with low means. The predictions of these two models are then compared against receiver operating characteristics (ROCs) for the detection of changes in sound intensity. It is concluded that human listeners' perception of small and unidimensional acoustic changes is better described by a discrete-state Poisson model than by the more commonly used CVG model or by the less favored HT and quantum models. In complex scenes, the identity of an auditory object can build up across seconds. Given that attention operates on perceptual objects, this perceptual buildup may alter the efficacy of selective auditory attention over time. Here, we measured identification of a sequence of spoken target digits presented with distracter digits from other directions to investigate the dynamics of selective attention. Performance was better when the target location was fixed rather than changing between digits, even when listeners were cued as much as 1 s in advance about the position of each subsequent digit. Spatial continuity not only avoided well known costs associated with switching the focus of spatial attention, but also produced refinements in the spatial selectivity of attention across time. Continuity of target voice further enhanced this buildup of selective attention. Results suggest that when attention is sustained on one auditory object within a complex scene, attentional selectivity improves over time. The generation manipulation produces the classic functional dissociation between explicit and implicit memory. This dissociation has been explained by the transfer-appropriate processing (TAP) framework, which emphasizes the overlap in cognitive processes operative at encoding and at retrieval. However, the vast majority of implicit memory studies have been conducted in the visual modality; in the auditory modality, the effects of generation have never been investigated. In four experiments, we examined the effects of generating from semantic and nonsemantic cues on auditory implicit tests. Generating from antonyms produced a reversed generation effect on priming in auditory perceptual identification and word stem completion, while producing the traditional positive effect on explicit recognition. Generating from definitions, as well as from rhymes, also produced a reversed generation effect on auditory priming. These results are critical for more fully characterizing auditory priming and are consistent with an extended TAP analysis.

Many adults may have lower subjective feelings of familiarity toward infants' vocalizations since infants' sounds are different from those of adults. However, mothers frequently exposed to infants' vocalizations may be more familiar and less averse. To test this hypothesis, 21 mothers (M age = 31.1 yr., SD = 4.3) of infants (M age = 8.2 mo., SD = 3.5), 18 mothers (M age = 34.4 yr., SD = 4.8) of children between two and five years of age (M age = 2.8 yr., SD = 1.0), and 17 women (M age = 29.2 yr., SD = 11.1) with no children were exposed to 20 types of sounds. Of these sounds, 14 were produced by infants. Although the mothers of infants did not recognize sounds as those of an infant's vocalization, they showed higher subjective feelings of familiarity toward the timbres of the vowel-like stimuli than did the other groups. By contrast, the subjective feelings of familiarity for nonspeech sounds did not differ among groups. Maternal experiences may change women's recognition of perceived sounds.

Past research has suggested that the disruptive effect of altered auditory feedback depends on how structurally similar the sequence of feedback events is to the planned sequence of actions. Three experiments pursued one basis for similarity in musical keyboard performance: matches between sequential transitions in spatial targets for movements and the melodic contour of auditory feedback. Trained pianists and musically untrained persons produced simple tonal melodies on a keyboard while heating feedback sequences that either matched the planned melody or were contour-preserving variations of that melody. Sequence production was disrupted among pianists when feedback events were serially shifted by one event, similarly for shifts of planned melodies and tonal variations but less so for shifts of atonal variations. Nonpianists were less likely to be disrupted by serial shifts of variations but showed similar disruption to pianists for shifts of the planned melody. Thus, transitional properties and tonal schemata may jointly determine perception-action similarity during musical sequence production, and the tendency to generalize from a planned sequence to variations of it may develop with the acquisition of skill. The authors explore priming effects of pitch repetition in music in 3 experiments. Musically untrained participants heard a short melody and sang the last pitch of the melody as quickly as possible. Each experiment manipulated (a) whether or not the tone to be sung (target) was heard earlier in the melody (primed) and (b) the prime-target distance (measured in events). Experiment 1 used variable-length melodies, whereas Experiments 2 and 3 used fixed-length melodies. Experiment 3 changed the timbre of the target tone. In all experiments, fast-responding participants produced repeated tones faster than nourepeated tones, and this repetition benefit decreased as prime-target distances increased. All participants produced expected tonic endings faster than less expected nontonic endings. Repetition and tonal priming effects are compared with harmonic priming effects in music and with repetition priming effects in language. If working memory is limited by central capacity (e.g., the focus of attention; N. Cowan, 2001), then storage limits for information in a single modality should apply also to the simultaneous storage of information from different modalities. The authors investigated this by combining a visual-array comparison task with a novel auditory-array comparison task in 5 experiments. Participants were to remember only the visual, only the auditory (unimodal memory conditions), or both arrays (bimodal memory conditions). Experiments 1 and 2 showed significant dual-task tradeoffs for visual but not for auditory capacity. In Experiments 3-5, the authors eliminated modality-specific memory by using postperceptual masks. Dual-task costs occurred for both modalities, and the number of auditory and visual items remembered together was no more than the higher of the unimodal capacities (visual: 3-4 items). The findings suggest a central capacity supplemented by modality- or code-specific storage and point to avenues for further research on the role of processing in central storage. The spectral, temporal, and intensive selectivity of neurons in the adult primary auditory cortex (A1) is easily degraded in early postnatal life by raising rat pups in the presence of pulsed noise. The nonselective frequency tuning recorded in these rats substantially endures into adulthood. Here we demonstrate that perceptual training applied in these developmentally degraded postcritical-period rats results in the recovery of normal representational fidelity. By using a modified go/no-go training strategy, structured noise-reared rats were trained to identify target auditory stimuli of specific frequency from a set of distractors varying in frequency. Target stimuli changed daily on a random schedule. Consistent with earlier findings, structured noise exposure within the critical period resulted in disrupted tonotopicity within A1 and in degraded frequency-response selectivity for A1 neurons. Tonotopicity and frequency-response selectivity were normalized by perceptual training. Changes induced by training endured without loss for at least 2 months after training cessation. Musical training is known to modify cortical organization. Here, we show that such modifications extend to subcortical sensory structures and generalize to processing of speech. Musicians had earlier and larger brainstem responses than nonmusician controls to both speech and music stimuli presented in auditory and audiovisual conditions, evident as early as 10 ms after acoustic onset. Phase-locking to stimulus periodicity, which likely underlies perception of pitch, was enhanced in musicians and strongly correlated with length of musical practice. In addition, viewing videos of speech (lip-reading) and music (instrument being played) enhanced temporal and frequency encoding in the auditory brainstem, particularly in musicians. This study was aimed at examining whether pitch height and pitch change axe mentally represented along spatial axes. A series of experiments explored; for isolated tones and 2-note intervals, the occurrence of effects analogous to the spatial numerical association of response codes (SNARC) effect. Response device orientation (horizontal vs. vertical), task, and musical expertise of the participants were manipulated. The pitch of isolated tones triggered the automatic activation of a vertical axis independently of musical expertise, but the contour of melodic intervals did not. By contrast, automatic associations with the horizontal axis seemed linked to music training for pitch and, to a lower extent, for intervals. These results, discussed in the light of studies on number representation, provide a new example of the effects of musical expertise on music cognition. Illusory source recollections can be manufactured purely by the conditions at retrieval. At encoding, individuals listened to words spoken by a male or a female voice and later, at retrieval, determined who initially had spoken the test word or whether it was a new word. In Experiment 1, individuals were instructed during the memory test to make a response of male or female only if they clearly recollected the speaker presenting the item during encoding and to respond don't remember otherwise. Presenting test words with the same voice (match condition) as the one that had presented the word at encoding, a different voice (mismatch condition), or no test voice had no effect on the rate of responding don't remember. Instead, matching and mismatching test voices created illusory recollections that were consistent with the test voice. Experiment 2 yielded similar results with a remember/know source test. In this article, a theory is proposed that explains the illusory recollection effects, and a multinomial model and procedure are used to separate and measure the contributions of source discrimination and illusory recollections to performance.

Three experiments were conducted to investigate the fate of intention-related material processed in a to-be-ignored channel. Participants were given an intention to respond to cues in a visual-processing stream while simultaneously trying to ignore information being presented in an auditory stream. Subsequent to the ongoing activity, a surprise recognition test for information presented in the to-be-ignored auditory modality was administered. As compared with comparable neutral information, corrected recognition memory for intention-related material was significantly better, depending on the type of event-based prospective memory task. These results suggest that holding certain kinds of intentions can bias attentional processes in a manner consistent with a perceptual readiness for uptake of intention-related material.

Auditory stream segregation (or streaming) is a phenomenon in which 2 or more repeating sounds differing in at least 1 acoustic attribute are perceived as 2 or more separate sound sources (i.e., streams). This article selectively reviews psychophysical and computational studies of streaming and comprehensively reviews more recent neurophysiological studies that have provided important insights into the mechanisms of streaming. On the basis of these studies, segregation of sounds is likely to occur beginning in the auditory periphery and continuing at least to primary auditory cortex for simple cues such as pure-tone frequency but at stages as high as secondary auditory cortex for more complex cues such as periodicity pitch. Attention-dependent and perception-dependent processes are likely to take place in primary or secondary auditory cortex and may also involve higher level areas outside of auditory cortex. Topographic maps of acoustic attributes, stimulus-specific suppression, and competition between representations are among the neuropbysiological mechanisms that likely contribute to streaming. This study aimed to develop tests for differentiating auditory perception skills, e.g., to test drug effects. In Exp. 1 (N = 60), discrimination of succeeding frequencies, frequency identification assessed by a choice reaction task, and the perception of pitch contour assessed by frequency deviants in binaurai melodies showed zero partial correlations. In Exp. 2 (N = 36), discrimination correlated with performance on a field dependence test; fast frequency identification correlated with verbal fluency. The auditory tests are likely suitable for assessing distinct skills, but correlations with general cognitive abilities require further investigations.

Our ability to understand auditory signals depends on properly separating the mixture of sound arriving from multiple sources. Sound elements tend to belong to only one object at a time, consistent with the principle of disjoint allocation, although there are instances of duplex perception or coallocation, in which two sound objects share one sound element. Here we report an effect of 'nonallocation,' in which a sound element 'disappears' when two ongoing objects compete for its ownership. When a target tone is presented either as one of a sequence of tones or simultaneously with a harmonic vowel complex, it is heard as part of the corresponding object. However, depending on the spatial configuration of the scene, if the target, the tones, and the vowel are all presented together, the target may not be perceived in either the tones or the vowel, even though it is not perceived as a separate entity. This finding suggests an asymmetry in the strength of the perceptual evidence required to reject vs. to include an element within the auditory foreground, a result with important implications for how we process complex auditory scenes containing ambiguous information. auditory scene analysis | attention | auditory objects | spatial hearing | streaming

Auditory-perceptual evaluation, therefore, remains an important evaluation method for singing pedagogues, voice scientists, and clinicians who work with opera singers. Few investigators, however, have attempted to develop standard auditory-perceptual tools for evaluation of the operatic voice. This study aimed to pilot test a new auditory-perceptual rating instrument for operatic singing voice. Nine expert teachers of operatic singing used the instrument to rate the singing voices of 21 professional opera chorus artists from a national opera company. The findings showed that the instrument has good face validity, that it can be legitimately treated as a psychometrically sound scale, and that raters can use the scale consistently, both between and within judges. This new instrument, therefore, has the potential to allow opera singers, their teachers, voice care clinicians, and researchers to evaluate the important auditory-perceptual features of operatic voice quality. The song nucleus high vocal center (HVC) sends neural signals for song production and receives auditory input. By using electroencephalography (EEG) to objectively identify wake/sleep state, we show that HVC auditory responses change with physiological states. Comparison of EEG and HVC records revealed that HVC response to auditory stimuli is greatest during slow-wave sleep. During slow-wave sleep, HVC neurons responded preferentially to the bird's own song. Strikingly, both spontaneous and forced waking during sleep caused HVC auditory responses to cease within milliseconds of an EEG-measured state change. State-dependent phenomena in downstream nuclei, such as robustus archistriatalis, are likely to be derivatives of those in HVC.

The purpose of this pilot study was to investigate adult Ineraid and Nucleus cochlear implant (CI) users' perceptual accuracy for melodic and rhythmic patterns, and quality ratings for different musical instruments. Subjects were 18 postlingually deafened adults with Cl experience. Evaluative measures included the Primary Measures of Music Audiation (PMMA) and a Musical Instrument Quality Rating. Performance scores on the PMMA were correlated with speech perception measures, music background, and subject characteristics. Results demonstrated a broad range of perceptual accuracy and quality ratings across subjects. On these measures, performance for temporal contrasts was better than for melodic contrasts independent of Cl device. Trends in the patterns of correlations between speech and music perception suggest that particular structural elements of music are differentially accessible to cochlear implant users. Additionally, notable qualitative differences for ratings of musical instruments were observed between Nucleus and Ineraid users. For pathological voices, spectral noise is closely related to the degree of perceived hoarseness. In this paper, noise variations are tracked during an utterance by means of an adaptive version of the normalized noise energy method [1]. A first step is devoted to pitch estimation, which allows defining the varying optimal time window length for noise retrieval, avoiding empty 'dip' regions. The approach is tested on synthetic data and applied to real data coming from cordectomised adult male patients. Index Terms--Adaptive estimation, noise, pathological voice, pitch, voice analysis.

Sound is a neglected dimension in geography, not least because of the dominance of the eye and the visual sense. Yet sound plays a crucial role in the anticipation, experience and remembering of places. All sound is environmental in nature in that its strength, tone and reflective or reverberative qualities are moulded by the setting in which it is emitted. The relationship is emphasised by acoustic architecture. Recent studies have been made of soundscapes, using Schafer's constituents of keynotes, signals and landmarks, soundwalks and a sound portrait.

Developmental dysphasia refers to a group of disorders in children that are characterized by severe retardation of language development, without any known causes. Studies show that children with developmental dysphasia have difficulty in discriminating speech sounds that vary in frequency. The relationship between difficulty with sound distinction and impaired language development is not clear. It is possible that this perceptual difficulty may result either from a language disorder, such as the inability to process speech, or a hearing disorder, such as impaired auditory processing. The role of impaired auditory processing in developmental dysphasia was assessed by measuring auditory evoked responses to tones that varied in frequency. Auditory evoked response is a method of testing the function of the ear with regard to hearing. For example, if the hearing pathway is intact, the brain electrical activity will indicate that the sound stimulus reached the brain. Tests were carried out in normal children and in two groups of children with developmental language disorders. Children with expressive language impairment (difficulties expressing themselves) had auditory evoked responses that were close to that of normal children. However, children with receptive language impairment (difficulties understanding language) had decreased or absent auditory evoked responses. These findings suggest that inability to analyze changes in frequency is associated with impaired receptive language development and may contribute to difficulties in speech perception.
