Abstract

We present a detailed investigation on the effects of water diffusion at the different interfaces of gold-graphene plasmonic sensors on the propagation of the supported surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs). The substrate/metal interfacial chemical reactions are investigated by monitoring the full width at half-maximum of the SPR reflectivity curve. Although protection by single-layer graphene (SLG) grown by chemical vapor deposition inhibits the chemical reactions happening at the metal-dielectric interfaces, SPR experimental results confirm that water diffusion paths through the borders of graphene domains are still present into the plasmonic sensors. Density functional theory calculations show that the doping level of SLG after the transfer on gold as well as interfacial charge transfer can be tuned in the presence of water molecules. On these bases, we propose a simplified effective medium approach for heterogeneous metal-carbon interfaces, where the interaction between the surface atomic layers of the gold thin film, water molecules, and the SLG induces the creation of an extended charge density difference region crossing the Au/H2O/SLG/H2O heterointerface. The latter is modeled as an ultrathin effective medium with a thickness and extraordinary optical susceptivity and conductivity that are different from those of the free-standing graphene. In this context, the extraordinary refractive index and thickness of the graphene-gold effective medium are measured in the near-infrared on the low-damping SPR platforms by applying the two-medium SPR method. The results are coherent with graphene n-doping in water environment, showing that the optically excited electrons along the extraordinary axis have a substantial bonding character and that the enhancement of the sensitivity of the gold-graphene plasmonic sensors is not related to a shift in the plasma frequency of the metal layer but to the changes in the extraordinary polarizability of graphene. Abstract

Sensors for the detection of heavy metal ions in water are in high demand due to the danger they pose to both the environment and human health. Among their possible detection approaches, modulation of the photoluminescence of gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) is gaining wide interest as an alternative to classical analytical methods based on complex and high-cost instrumentation. In the present work, luminescent oxidized AuNCs emitting in both ultraviolet (UV) and visible (blue) regions were synthesized by pulsed laser ablation of a gold target in NaOH aqueous solution, followed by different bleaching processes. High-resolution electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray scattering confirmed the presence of oxygen and gold in the transparent photoluminescent clusters, with an average diameter of about 3 nm. The potentialities of the bleached AuNCs colloidal dispersions for the detection of heavy metal ions were studied by evaluating the variation in photoluminescence in the presence of Cd2+, Pb2+, Hg2+ and CH3Hg+ ions. Different responses were observed in the UV and visible (blue) spectral regions. The intensity of blue emission decreased (no more than 10%) and saturated at concentrations higher than 20 ppb for all the heavy metal ions tested. In contrast, the UV band emission was remarkably affected in the presence of Hg2+ ions, thus leading to signal variations for concentrations well beyond 20 ppb (the concentration at which saturation occurs for other ions). The limit of detection for Hg2+ is about 3 ppb (15 nmol/L), and the photoluminescence intensity diminishes linearly by about 75% up to 600 ppb. The results are interpreted based on the ligand-free interaction, i.e., the metallophilic bonding formation of Hg2+ and Au+ oxide present on the surface of the UV-emitting nanoclusters. Abstract

A square‐wave voltammetric method was developed for the determination of creatinine using glassy carbon electrode functionalized multi‐walled carbon nanotubes and doped with copper. Since the creatine‐creatinine balance is dependent on pH, the linear responses at either pH 4.0 or 7.0 were evaluated allowing versatility in application, covering analyte concentration from limit of quantification (0.3 μmol L−1) up to 1.200 μmol L−1 (pH 4) or 660 μmol L−1 (pH 7). Electrode is simple to prepare and robust for routine analysis and it was used for the determination of creatinine in urine after simple thin‐layer separation procedure to avoid interference from creatine.
