Abstract

Single crystals of new compound RbFe5(MoO4)7 were successfully grown by the flux method, and their crystal structure was determined using the X-ray single-crystal diffraction technique. The XRD analysis showed that the compound crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/m, with unit cell parameters a = 6.8987(4), b = 21.2912(12) and c = 8.6833(5) Å, β = 102.1896(18)°, V = 1246.66(12) Å3, Z (molecule number in the unit cell) = 2, R-factor (reliability factor) = 0.0166, and T = 293(2) K. Raman spectra were collected on the single crystal to show the local symmetry of MoO4 tetrahedra, after the confirmation of crystal composition using energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The polycrystalline samples were synthesized by a solid-state reaction in the Ar atmosphere; the particle size and thermal stability were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analyses. The compound decomposes above 1073 K in an Ar atmosphere with the formation of Fe(III) molybdate. The thermal expansion coefficient along the c direction has the value α = −1.3 ppm K−1 over the temperature range of 298–473 K. Magnetic measurements revealed two maxima in the magnetization below 20 K, and paramagnetic behavior above 50 K with the calculated paramagnetic moment of 12.7 μB per formula unit is in good agreement with the presence of 3Fe3+ and 2Fe2+ in the high-spin (HS) state. The electronic structure of RbFe5(MoO4)7 is comparatively evaluated using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The stoichiometry and phase homogeneity of the kesterite type compound Cu2ZnSnS4 play a key role in its efficiency in solar cells. In this work, CuCl2, ZnCl2 and SnCl2 were applied as solvents in the Cu2ZnSnS4 crystal growth for the first time. The multiphase ingot was obtained by direct fusion of the stoichiometric batch composed of constituent elements. Compared to that, the material recrystallized in SnCl2 presented a single-phase Zn-rich kesterite with composition Cu1.94Zn1.06SnS4 and unit cell parameters of a = 5.4324(3) and c = 10.8383(2) Å. The crystal structure of Cu1.94Zn1.06SnS4 was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The integral phase purity of the crystals grown with the use of the SnCl2 solvent was verified by powder X-ray diffraction analysis and Raman measurements. In the Raman spectrum, the FWHM value of the 337 cm−1 line was as low as 9.6 cm−1 that indicates the minimal lattice disorder. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Structural and electronic characteristics of KY(WO4)2 (KYW) (010) crystal surfaces have been studied using reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED) and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results indicate that the crystal structure and chemical composition of the mechanically polished pristine surface is stoichiometrically well maintained as expected for KYW crystals. Combined measurements of RHEED and XPS as a function of 1.5 keV Ar+ ion irradiation of the KYW (010) surfaces indicate amorphization, partial loss of potassium atoms, and partial transformation of chemical valence state of tungsten from W6+ to a lower valence state, W0 state predominantly, which induces electronic states at the top of valence band. The colorless crystals of 1,3-diethyl-7-hydroxy-5,5,7-trimethy1-2-thioxo-1,2,3,5,6,7-hexahydro-4H-pyrano[2,3-d]pyrimidin-4-one (I) have been crystallized from the solution containing 1,3-diethyl-2-thiobarbituric acid (HDETBA) and equal volumes of concentrated HCl and acetone A possible stoichiometric reaction mechanism has been suggested. The crystal structure of I has been determined by X-ray single crystal analysis. The phase purity of the precipitate has been verified by powder X-ray diffraction analysis. Compound 1 crystallizes in the orthorhombic structure, space group P2(1)2(1)2(1), with cell parameters a = 9.7454(4), b = 11.2225(4), c = 13.9171(5) angstrom, Z = 4, V = 1522.1(1) angstrom(3). The molecules of 1 contain the bicyclic ring constructions new in thiobarbiturates. The molecules of 1 are linked by O-H center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen bonds to infinite molecule chains. The results of mass spectrometric analysis, theoretical studies and IR spectroscopy confirm the structure of I. Using the PASS software, the general pharmacological potential of 1 was analyzed.
