In quantum computation we are given a finite set of gates and we have to perform a desired operation as a product of them. The corresponding computational problem is approximating an arbitrary unitary as a product in a topological generating set of $SU(d)$. The problem is known to be solvable in time $polylog(1/\epsilon)$ with product length $polylog(1/\epsilon)$, where the implicit constants depend on the given generators. The existing algorithms solve the problem but they need a very slow and space consuming preparatory stage. This stage runs in time exponential in $d^2$ and requires memory of size exponential in $d^2$. In this paper we present methods which make the implementation of the existing algorithms easier. We present heuristic methods which make a time-length trade-off in the preparatory step. We decrease the running time and the used memory to polynomial in $d$ but the length of the products approximating the desired operations will increase (by a factor which depends on $d$). Summation formulas are obtained for products of associated Lagurre polynomials by means of the Green's function K for the Hamiltonian H = -{d^2\over dx^2} + x^2 + Ax^{-2}, A > 0. K is constructed by an application of a Mercer type theorem that arises in connection with integral equations. Eigenfunctions and eigenvalues of the free magnetic Schr\"odinger operator, describing a spinless particle confined to an infinite layer of fixed width, are discussed in detail. The eigenfunctions are realized as an orthonormal basis of a suitable Hilbert space. Four different classes of temporally stable coherent states associated to the operator are presented. The first two classes are derived as coherent states with one degree of freedom and the last two classes are derived with two degrees of freedom. The dynamical algebra of each class is found. Statistical quantities associated to each class of coherent states are calculated explicitely., Comment: 31 pages

The Friedrichs extension for the generalized spiked harmonic oscillator given by the singular differential operator -D^2+ Bx^2 + Ax^{-2} + lambda x^{-alpha} (B>0, A >= 0) in L_2(0, infinity) is studied. We look at two different domains of definition for each of these differential operators in L_2(0, infinity), namely C_0^infinity(0, infinity) and D(T_{2,F})\cap D(M_{lambda, alpha}), where the latter is a subspace of the Sobolev space W_{2,2}(0, infinity). Adjoints of these differential operators on C_0^infinity(0,infinity) exist as result of the null-space properties of functionals. For the other domain, convolutions and Jensen and Minkowski integral inequalities, density of C_0^\infinity(0,\infinity) in D(T_{2,F})\cap D(M_{\lambda, \alpha}) in L_2(0,\infinity) lead to the other adjoints. Further density properties C_0^infinity(0,infinity) on D(T_{2,F})\cap D(M_{\lambda, \alpha}) yield the Friedrichs extension of these differential operators with domains of definition D(T_{2,F})\cap D(M_{lambda, alpha})., Comment: 16 pages

Harrell's modified perturbation theory [Ann. Phys. 105, 379-406 (1977)] is applied and extended to obtain non-power perturbation expansions for a class of singular Hamiltonians H = -D^2 + x^2 + A/x^2 + lambda/x^alpha, (A\geq 0, alpha > 2), known as generalized spiked harmonic oscillators. The perturbation expansions developed here are valid for small values of the coupling lambda > 0, and they extend the results which Harrell obtained for the spiked harmonic oscillator A = 0. Perturbation expansions up to third order for the generalized spiked harmonic oscillator Hamiltonians H = -d^2/dx^2+ x^2 + A/x^2 + lambda/x^alpha, A >= 0, 2gamma > alpha, gamma=1+(1/2)sqrt(1+4A), and small values of the coupling lambda > 0, are developed. Upper and lower bounds for the eigenvalues are computed by means of the procedure of Burrows et al [J. Phys. A: Math. Infinite series sum_{n=1}^infty {(alpha/2)_n / (n n!)}_1F_1(-n, gamma, x^2), where_1F_1(-n, gamma, x^2)={n!_(gamma)_n}L_n^(gamma-1)(x^2), appear in the first-order perturbation correction for the wavefunction of the generalized spiked harmonic oscillator Hamiltonian H = -d^2/dx^2 + B x^2 + A/x^2 + lambda/x^alpha 0 <= x < infty, alpha, lambda > 0, A >= 0. It is proved that the series is convergent for all x > 0 and 2 gamma > alpha, where gamma = 1 + (1/2)sqrt(1+4A). Closed-form sums are presented for these series for the cases alpha = 2, 4, and 6. A general formula for finding the sum for alpha/2 = 2 + m, m = 0,1,2, ..., in terms of associated Laguerre polynomials, is also provided., Comment: 16 pages

A complete variational treatment is provided for a family of spiked-harmonic oscillator Hamiltonians H = -d^2/dx^2 + B x^2 + lambda/x^alpha, B > 0, lambda > 0, for arbitrary alpha > 0. A compact topological proof is presented that the set S = {psi_n} of known exact solutions for alpha = 2 constitutes an orthonormal basis for the Hilbert space L_2(0, infinity). Closed-form expressions are derived for the matrix elements of H with respect to S. These analytical results, and the inclusion of a further free parameter, facilitate optimized variational estimation of the eigenvalues of H to high accuracy., Comment: 32 pages

A variational and perturbative treatment is provided for a family of generalized spiked harmonic oscillator Hamiltonians H = -(d/dx)^2 + B x^2 + A/x^2 + lambda/x^alpha, where B > 0, A >= 0, and alpha and lambda denote two real positive parameters. The method makes use of the function space spanned by the solutions |n> of Schroedinger's equation for the potential V(x)= B x^2 + A/x^2. Compact closed-form expressions are obtained for the matrix elements , and a first-order perturbation series is derived for the wave function.
