Abstract

In this paper we present a new reactive transport code for the efficient simulation of groundwater quality problems. The new code couples the two previously existing tools OpenFoam and PhreeqcRM. The major objective of the development was to transfer and expand the capabilities of the MODFLOW/MT3DMS‐family of codes, especially their outstanding ability to suppress numerical dispersion, to a versatile and computationally efficient code for unstructured grids. Owing to the numerous, previously existing transport solvers contained in OpenFoam, the newly developed code achieves this objective and provides a solid basis for future expansions of the code capabilities. The flexibility of the OpenFoam framework is illustrated by the addition of diffusional processes for gaseous compounds in the unsaturated zone and the advection of gases (multiphase transport). The code capabilities and accuracy are illustrated through several examples: (1) a simple 2D case for conservative solute transport under saturated conditions, (2) a gas diffusion case with reactions in the unsaturated zone, (3) a hydrogeologically complex 3D reactive transport problem, and finally (4) the injection of CO2 into a deep aquifer with acidification being buffered by carbonate minerals. Abstract

In this comment, we revisit equations concerning the analytical solutions presented by Gutierrez-Neri and co-workers for reactive transport for a pollutant undergoing core and fringe degradations. We state that a correction needs to be made in Eq. (9) of the work of Gutierrez- Neri et al. in order that the equation follows closely previous work published by J. Bear (in 1-D) and P.A. Domenico (in 3-D). Furthermore we derive alternative solutions for Eqs. (13)–(16) which separate more clearly the first-order reaction and the instantaneous reaction. It is shown that the corrected solution agrees better with the results from the numerical model than the previous solution. An improvement is also made by giving a solution which avoids negative concentrations. Furthermore, the corresponding solution for the electron acceptor reacting with the pollutant is given.

Abstract

Foam is to be used as a blocking agent for confining a pollutant source zone and avoid spreading in an aquifer. To this end, it is necessary to determine where injected foam flows and stays inside a porous medium. This study examines the use of electrical resistivity tomography for this purpose. Foam is injected in a large-scale 3D heterogeneous porous medium (0.84 × 0.84 × 0.84 m). During the injection, electrical resistivity tomography measurements are performed. We show that combining a large number of measurements with inversion techniques allows for the monitoring of a foam front in 3D during the injection process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Au nord du Bassin Adour-Garonne, la ressource en eau principalement exploitée pour l'alimentation en eau potable est l'aquifère Eocène (masse d'eau 5071). Le projet de recherche CARISMEAU 2, initié début 2009 s'inscrit étroitement dans le cadre de la Directive Cadre sur l'Eau. Il vise à mieux comprendre les hétérogénéités et les interconnections au sein de la masse d'eau 5071. En effet, cet aquifère présente des teneurs anomaliques en sulfates et fluor qui induisent des difficultés d'exploitation de la ressource. L'origine de ces minéralisations excessives, réparties de façon hétérogène, n'est pas encore connue. Le projet CARISMEAU 2, auquel est associée la thèse " Zone minéralisée de l'Entre-deux-Mers ", met en application une approche couplée hydrogéologique, géochimique et isotopique. Les objectifs sont de mieux connaître l'origine de la salinité et de définir les circulations de ces eaux minéralisées dans l'aquifère Eocène, lui-même compris au sein du système aquifère multicouche du Bassin aquitain. Afin de mieux caractériser cette masse d'eau, une cinquantaine de points ont été suivis fin 2009. Des méthodes de géochimie et de géochimie isotopique classiques sont utilisées, mais aussi des méthodes isotopiques innovantes et/ou expérimentales. Les premiers résultats des analyses géochimiques et multi-isotopiques sont présentés dans l'objectif de mieux comprendre l'origine de ces éléments, leur comportement et leur migration dans les aquifères.

Abstract

Groundwater quality sustainability In the south-west of France, the Eocene aquifer is one of the main resources for irrigation, thermo-mineral water, and mainly for drinking water in the Bordeaux region. This aquifer is characterized by the presence of a large mineralized area, centered on the Entre-deux-Mers region, between the Garonne and the Dordogne rivers, where the groundwaters show strong mineralization and anomalous levels of critical elements, such as sulphates and fluoride, leading to difficulties of resource exploitation for drinking water supply. Ongoing analyses of major elements confirm the salinity variation in the system and the multi-isotopes results will be presented at the conference, in order to decipher the origin of this salinity.

Abstract

Ethyl tert-butyl ether (ETBE) was detected at high concentration (300 mg L−1) in the groundwater below a gas-station. No significant carbon neither hydrogen isotopic fractionation of ETBE was detected along the plume. ETBE and BTEX biodegradation capacities of the indigenous microflora Pz1-ETBE and of a culture (MC-IFP) composed of Rhodococcus wratislaviensis IFP 2016, Rhodococcus aetherivorans IFP 2017 and Aquincola tertiaricarbonis IFP 2003 showed that ETBE and BTEX degradation rates were in the same range (ETBE: 0.91 and 0.83 mg L−1 h−1 and BTEX: 0.64 and 0.82 mg L−1 h−1, respectively) but tert-butanol (TBA) accumulated transiently at a high level using Pz1-ETBE (74 mg L−1). An on-site pilot plant (2 m3) filled with polluted groundwater and inoculated by MC-IFP, successfully degraded four successive additions of ETBE and gasoline. However, an insignificant ETBE isotopic fractionation was also accompanying this decrease which suggested the involvement of low fractionating-strains using EthB enzymes, but required of additional proofs. The ethB gene encoding a cytochrome P450 involved in ETBE biodegradation (present in R. aetherivorans IFP 2017) was monitored by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (q-PCR) on DNA extracted from water sampled in the pilot plant which yield up to 5 × 106 copies of ethB gene per L−1.

Abstract

A new device, whose essential element is an inductive sensor that goes up and down the tensiometer's tubing and automatically estimates metric potential precisely and economically, proves to be as precise as the traditional methods used to measure soil metric potential gradient to climate water fluxes in soils through the use of tensiometers. An endless screw and a stepping motor linked to an acquisition data box accurately regulates the vertical movement of the sensor.

48. Experimental Study of Foam Flow in Sand Columns: Surfactant Choice and Resistance Factor Measurement.

Abstract

Contamination of soil and groundwater with nonaqueous phase liquid represents a major environmental concern because of the negative effect on human health. Traditional soil flushing techniques have been proved ineffective in heterogeneous aquifers, since liquids for remediation flow preferentially through the most permeable layers and residual oil remains trapped in the low-permeability sediments. To improve the sweep efficiency, fluids with lower mobility than resident liquids can be injected, such as polymers or in situ generated foam. In addition, foam has the potential of selectively reducing mobility in higher-permeability layers compared to lower-permeability layers. The use of foams has not been popular because foam mobility is difficult to predict. In this paper, a series of 1D column experiments were conducted to investigate the variation of the resistance factor RF as a function of the permeability. Five types of sand and calibrated glass beads were used to obtain porous media of permeabilities ranging from 250 millidarcy to 100 Darcy. Two commercial nonionic surfactants, $$\hbox {Triton}^{{\circledR }}$$ X-100 (commonly used but toxic) and sucrose laurate (environmentally friendly surfactant, biodegradable), were used at a concentration equal to 10 critical micelle concentration. Columns were first saturated with water and then flushed with 1.5 PV (pore volumes) of surfactant solution in order to achieve the adsorption of molecules into the soil matrix. Then, co-injection of air and surfactant solution was performed at a constant total rate to generate in situ foam. The quality of the foam was varied from 85 to 99 % to investigate the effect of this parameter on the resistance factor. A graphic showing the dependence of RF and the permeability is presented. Results suggest that for the same total flow rate, the RF decreases as permeability increases, but for permeabilities smaller than 1 Darcy, the RF is weak, probably due to the difficulty to generate stable foam under high capillary pressures. Variations in foam quality and surfactant type do not seem to have an important effect on the results regarding RF.
