Aim Secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT), a complication of haemodialysis, is commonly treated with calcimimetics. The impact of dialysates containing different calcium (Ca) concentrations on clinical efficacy of calcimimetics are unclear. We examined whether dialysate Ca concentrations influence the efficacy and dosing of etelcalcetide with concomitant drugs. Methods We performed post hoc analyses of a 52‐week, open‐label, multicentre study of etelcalcetide in Japanese SHPT patients to determine whether dialysate Ca influences the therapeutic effects of etelcalcetide with concomitant drugs. We evaluated the differences in serum intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH), corrected Ca (cCa) and phosphate levels among three dialysate Ca concentration groups (2.5, 2.75 or 3.0 mEq/L Ca). Tartrate‐resistant acid phosphatase 5b (TRACP‐5b) and bone alkaline phosphatase (BAP) levels were also compared. Since the dialysate Ca concentration may influence dose adjustment, we assessed the etelcalcetide and concomitant drug doses. Results There were no clinically meaningful differences in iPTH, cCa and phosphate levels among the 2.5, 2.75 and 3.0 mEq/L groups (n = 34, 64 and 35, respectively) over 52 weeks. At Week 52, more than 82%, 71% and 67% of patients had iPTH, cCa and phosphate levels within target ranges (60‐240 pg/mL, 8.4‐10.0 mg/dL and 3.5‐6.0 mg/dL, respectively) across the three groups. TRACP‐5b and BAP levels decreased by Week 52 regardless of dialysate Ca. Changes in etelcalcetide and concomitant drug doses were generally similar in each group. Conclusion The efficacy and dosing of etelcalcetide with concomitant drugs were essentially unaffected by the dialysate Ca concentration. Patients showed improvements in bone hypermetabolism during treatment., SUMMARY AT A GLANCE This is a small observational study of the effect of dialysate calcium concentrations on etelcalcetide with concomitant drugs in secondary hyperparathyroidism. No statistically significant differences were found between the different dialysate calcium groups suggesting that calcium concentrations in the dialysate do not modulate the effect of etelcalcetide.

The high-speed liquid-jet velocity achieved using an injector strongly depends on the piston motion, physical property of the liquid, and container shape of the injector. Herein, we investigate the liquid ejection mechanism and a technique for estimating the ejection velocity of a high-speed liquid jet using a pyro jet injector (PJI). We apply a two-dimensional numerical simulation with an axisymmetric approximation using the commercial software ANSYS/FLUENT. To gather the input data applied during the numerical simulation, the piston motion is captured with a high-speed CMOS camera, and the velocity of the piston is measured using motion tracking software. To reproduce the piston motion during the numerical simulation, the boundary-fitted coordinates and a moving boundary method are employed. In addition, we propose a fluid dynamic model (FDM) for estimating the high-speed liquid-jet ejection velocity based on the piston velocity. Using the FDM, we consider the liquid density variation but neglect the effects of the liquid viscosity on the liquid ejection. Our results indicate that the liquid-jet ejection velocity estimated by the FDM corresponds to that predicted by ANSYS/FLUENT for several different ignition-powder weights. This clearly shows that a high-speed liquid-jet ejection velocity can be estimated using the presented FDM when considering the variation in liquid density but neglecting the liquid viscosity. In addition, some characteristics of the presented PJI are observed, namely, (1) a very rapid piston displacement within 0.1 ms after a powder explosion, (2) piston vibration only when a large amount of powder is used, and (3) a pulse jet flow with a temporal pulse width of 0.1 ms.

Digital fabrication has evolved over time with the development of various methods such as three-dimensional (3D) printing and laser cutting. Three-dimensional printers are capable of easily producing output from complicated models designed in a computer. In addition, bio technologies are applying for fabrication [Yao et al. 2015]. How can 3D printers be made to output computationally-designed models of 3D sheets? Typically, the production of objects made of silk threads requires several steps (Figure 2): (1) silkworms form cocoons, (2) cocoons are made into threads, and (3) threads are transformed into clothes or other products. In the past, silkworms have been considered primarily as organisms that create silk threads, rather than as being capable of providing a method of silk production. Silk Pavillion [Oxman et al. 2014] was the first example where silkworms were regarded as providing a viable production method. However, this study only focused on making large but simple structures. In this study, we propose a new method to construct arbitrary three-dimensional silk sheets using silkworms (Figure 1). Our method can be applied to small objects printed with 3D printers. First, we print a 3D model in several parts to prevent silkworms from forming cocoons. When designing the model, we ensure that the silkworms have sufficient space to create silk sheets. Second, we print the portions of the model with a 3D printer. Third, we place silkworms on these portions, allowing them to spit silk threads. Finally, we peel off the produced sheets and connect them. This approach depends on the fact that when silkworms are placed on the surface of a three-dimensional object, they create silk sheets matched to the shape of the surface.

Liquid column breaking, called atomization, is of great interest in both geophysics and engineering. Particularly, the atomization occurs on the ocean surface, on fuel injection in engines, on ink injection in printers, and, perhaps, on spilt chemical in future needleless-syringe. Although there are many studies for the atomization, the atomization mechanism is not fully understood, because of complicated interfacial movement and deformation, accompanied with bubble entrainment. We, therefore, used a direct numerical simulation with Level-Set/VOF method as the interface tracking method. The method is coupling method of Level-Set method, which captures an interface shape smoothly, and VOF method with high-precision mass conservation of liquid. The calculation of wind waves was performed using the program code ‘FK’ developed in Kyoto University. The computational domain is set to be 140 mm, 20 mm, and 40 mm in streamwise, spanwise, and vertical directions, respectively. The upper half of the computational domain is set to be air, and lower one is set to be water. The initial constant air flow is set to be 5 m/s, and the water is initially set to be 1 m/s. The results show that we can reproduce the chop breaking, a kind of atomization on a liquid column breaking. Furthermore, we performed another numerical simulation using ANSYS FLUENT as a preliminary calculation for atomization of a water jet by syringe pumping. The computational domain is set to be 70 mm in total length, 60 mm in total length of the syringe barrel, and the syringe diameter is 20 mm. The length of needle is 10 mm and needle diameter is 2 mm. The piston wall is set to be a mobile wall by dynamic mesh function. The piston wall was moved 40 mm to needle direction with the frequency of 0.1 Hz. The PISO method is used for the unsteady flow. We calculated the flow rate spilt from the edge of the nozzle. The results show that the frequency of spilt flow rate agreed with 0.1Hz, which is the frequency of the mobile wall of the piston.

We present a new method to render aerial images using aerosol-based fog screens. Conventional fog screens are easily affected by air flow, and their fog generators occupy large areas. In this study, we propose to add new tradeoffs between the display time and the payloads. We employ aerosol distribution from off-the-shelf sprays as a fog screen that can resist wind and has high portability. Results showed that the minimum weight of the entire system is approximately 600 g including all components, the screen raise time is approximately 0.5 s, the disappearance time is approximately 0.4 s, and the maximum wind speed at which we can project images is approximately 10 m/s. We conducted user studies on wearable applications, aerial imaging with a drone or radio-controlled model car, multi-viewpoint display, and a display embedded in the environment. This study will contribute to the exploration of new application areas for fog displays, and will augment expressions of entertainment and interactivity.

The purpose of this study was to examine improvements in tactical decision-making ability achieved by participating in basketball games with numerically uneven sides (3 on 2). The research focused on in-game decision-making as an important component of the learning of the basketball tactics in physical education classes. Three elementary school basketball classes consisting of two grade 5 classes and 1 grade 6 class were examined. The 82 class participants (boys=38, girls=44) received a total of 11 hours instruction. A physical education researcher advised the elementary school teacher (1) how to teach the principles of offensive decision-making in basketball and (2) how to facilitate improvements in tactical decision-making ability within the context of numerically uneven sides. In order to analyze children's decision-making ability in the games, all game situations were filmed with digital video cameras and the Game Performance Assessment Instrument (GPAI) was used. The main findings are summarized as follows :1) In all cases of shooting, passing and ball-keeping, the rate of appropriate decision-making, according to the data obtained from later units (classes 10 and 11), showed a significant (p>.05) increase when compared with data obtained from earlier units (classes 2 and 3).2) Results indicated that the appropriate ball-keeping performances, represented as a percentage, were lower than both those of shooting and passing throughout the duration of the study.3) Appropriate decision-making, when represented as a percentage, improved with learning experience in numerically uneven sides. These results support the hypothesis that the decision-making ability of children improves with learning experience by playing basketball games with numerically uneven sides.
