Abstract

Wealth distribution is a complex and critical aspect of any society. Information exchange is considered to have played a role in shaping wealth distribution patterns, but the specific dynamic mechanism is still unclear. In this research, we used simulation-based methods to investigate the impact of different modes of information exchange on wealth distribution. We compared different combinations of information exchange strategies and moving strategies, analyzed their impact on wealth distribution using classic wealth distribution indicators such as the Gini coefficient. Our findings suggest that information exchange strategies have significant impact on wealth distribution and that promoting more equitable access to information and resources is crucial in building a just and equitable society for all., Comment: 19 pages, 37 figures

Abstract

Training tactile sensing for shape recognition is considered to be an effective rehabilitation technique. Previous studies in tactile sensing showed a tendency of recognition ambiguity, thus necessitating tactile sensing rehabilitation. Eleven subjects observed invisible objects using their fingers and were asked to identify the shape of the objects. The relationship between the degree of recognition and shape complexity was investigated. The results showed high self-confidence in recognizing high complexity shapes. The recognition process was confirmed in a second experiment measuring brain activation using near-infrared spectroscopy. Measurement of eight subjects showed the activation of verbal and visual processing regions, indicating that the act of handling the shape was translated to verbal expression and visual imaging. These results potentially quantify tactile sensing and contribute to the realization of personalized rehabilitation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We have developed a noncontact brain activity measurement system based on near-infrared spectroscopy. With this system, phosphor is placed on the scalp of the forehead and irradiated only by excitation light that has propagated in tissue. Only fluorescence emitted by the phosphor is detected, while the excitation and disturbance lights are cut using optical filters. This configuration resolved the problem of the signal-to-noise ratio loss induced by the disturbance light. The changes in hemoglobin of the human brain were measured during a working memory task, and typical time course data were obtained. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The increase in the number of patients with mental disorders with depressive symptoms has become a significant problem. To prevent people developing those disorders and help with the effective recovery, it is important to quantitatively and objectively monitor an individual's mental state. Previous studies have shown the relationship between negative or depressive mood state and human prefrontal cortex (PFC) activation during verbal and spatial working memory tasks based on a near-infrared spectroscopy imaging technique. In this study, we aimed to explore a biomarker of the mental state of people in remission of mental disorders with depressive symptoms using this technique. We obtained the PFC activation of return-to-work (RTW) trainees in remission of those disorders, compared that of healthy controls, and obtained subjective questionnaire scores with the Profile of Mood States. We compared the PFC activation with the questionnaire scores by receiver operating characteristic analysis using a logistic-regression model. The results showed that the PFC activation indicates a healthy state compared to that of the RTW trainees evaluated by area-under-curve analysis. This study demonstrates that our PFC measurement technique will be useful as a quantitative and objective assessment of mental state.

Abstract

Optical topography (OT) based on near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is useful for measuring changes in the concentrations of oxygenated hemoglobin (oxy-Hb) and deoxygenated hemoglobin (deoxy-Hb) in brain tissues non-invasively. Conventional OT systems limit subjects' ranges of movement to within the length of optical fibers these systems require for irradiating light on the scalp and detecting light transmitted through the tissues in the human head. We developed a prototype of a multi-channel, portable OT system without optical fibers. We used the portable system to measure changes in the concentrations of oxy-Hb and deoxy-Hb in the frontal cortex while the subjects performed a word fluency task. The results show typical changes in hemoglobin concentrations during the task and suggest the prototype system can be used to investigate brain functions in the frontal cortex.
