Abstract The energy sector is strategically important and plays a major role in a nation’s development policies. Climate change, global warming, and rising energy costs all have contributed to a rising demand for renewable energy in recent years. As a result, in recent decades, concerns regarding solar energy, one of the most significant renewable energy sources, have grown in number. This study investigated the empirical solar correlations for the Ethiopian province of Mychew Tabia Smret, which was created in Ethiopia and a few other nations. By identifying the closest model based on collected data, the statistical compatibility of the solar radiation models under inspection was examined. In addition to specific to the region climate data, an Angstroms model forecast had been developed at the Mychew Tabia Smret location to estimate worldwide sun radiation. The corresponding values are 0.9824, 0.9658, 0.9215, 0.9125, and 0.9056, respectively. The available mean monthly solar energy distribution was determined to be 192 kWh/m2, while the mean annual solar energy was estimated as around 2339.2 kWh/m2. The estimated statistical parameters such as R2, MBE, RMSE, MPE, MAPE, t-sat, and e% method was addressed for the porpuse of testing the models’ acceptance. The understanding reveals that the crosschecked quadratic model is the most preferable model for Mychew Tabia Smret's solar radiation distribution, with a higher R2 value of 0.9823 compared to linear, logarithmic, exponential power, and exponential models. The quadratic model has a coefficient of determination of 98.23% R2 statistic, making it best alternative for predicting and estimating solar radiation distributions.

Abstract Background The COVID-19 disease requires accurate diagnosis to effectively manage infection rates and disease progression. The study aims to assess the relationship between vaccination status and RT-PCR cycle threshold (Ct) values by comparing clinical, RDT and RT-PCR results. Methods A total of 453 suspected COVID-19 cases were included in this study. Nasopharyngeal swabs were collected for both RDT and RT-PCR testing, with RDTs conducted on-site and RT-PCR at the Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI) genomics laboratory. Detailed clinical, RDT, and RT-PCR results were analyzed. Data analysis included descriptive statistics, cross-tabulation, and Chi-Square tests to investigate the connections between diagnostic outcomes and vaccination status, with a focusing on Ct values. Results RDT results showed 34.0% negative and 65.8% positive, while RT-PCR results indicated 35.8% negative and 64.2% positive cases. The discrepancies between RDT and RT-PCR results emphasize the importance of thorough testing. No significant association was found between vaccination status and viral load, as indicated by Ct values. Among RT-PCR positive cases, 49.8% had been vaccinated, suggesting challenges in interpreting results among vaccinated individuals. Further analysis revealed that vaccination (first or second dose) had minimal impact on Ct values, indicating limited influence of vaccination status on viral load dynamics in infected individuals. Conclusions The study highlights the significant differences between RDT and RT-PCR outcomes, underscoring the need for a comprehensive testing approach. Additionally, the findings suggest that vaccination status does not significantly impact RT-PCR Ct values, complicating the interpretation of diagnostic results in vaccinated individuals, especially in breakthrough infections and potential false positives.

IntroductionAlthough wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) successfully functioned as a tool for monitoring the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic globally, relatively little is known about its utility in low-income countries. This study aimed to quantify severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) RNA in wastewater, estimate the number of infected individuals in the catchment areas, and correlate the results with the clinically reported COVID-19 cases in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.MethodsA total of 323 influent and 33 effluent wastewater samples were collected from three Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs) using a 24-h composite Moore swab sampling method from February to November 2023. The virus was captured using Ceres Nanotrap® Enhancement Reagent 2 and Nanotrap® Microbiome A Particles, and then nucleic acids were extracted using the Qiagen QIAamp Viral RNA Mini Kit. The ThermoFisher TaqPath™ COVID-19 kit was applied to perform real-time reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) to quantify the SARS-CoV-2 RNA. Wastewater viral concentrations were normalized using flow rate and number of people served. In the sampling period, spearman correlation was used to compare the SARS-CoV-2 target gene concentration to the reported COVID-19 cases. The numbers of infected individuals under each treatment plant were calculated considering the target genes’ concentration, the flow rate of treatment plants, a gram of feces per person-day, and RNA copies per gram of feces.ResultsSARS-CoV-2 was detected in 94% of untreated wastewater samples. All effluent wastewater samples (n = 22) from the upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor and membrane bioreactor (MBR) technology were SARS-COV-2 RNA negative. In contrast, two out of 11 effluents from Waste Stabilization Pond were found positive. Positive correlations were observed between the weekly average SARS-CoV-2 concentration and the cumulative weekly reported COVID-19 cases in Addis Ababa. The estimated number of infected people in the Kality Treatment catchment area was 330 times the number of COVID-19 cases reported during the study period in Addis Ababa.DiscussionThis study revealed that SARS-CoV-2 was circulating in the community and confirmed previous reports of more asymptomatic COVID-19 cases in Ethiopia. Additionally, this study provides further evidence of the importance of wastewater-based surveillance in general to monitor infectious diseases in low-income settings.ConclusionWastewater-based surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 can be a useful method for tracking the increment of COVID-19 cases before it spreads widely throughout the community.

Background: Rhizobium giardinii has been demonstrated to colonize the roots of a variety of legume species, including common beans, and to increase nitrogen fixation. This suggests that Rhizobium giardinii might be a beneficial tool for sustainable agriculture by lowering dependency on synthetic nitrogen fertilizers and enhancing soil fertility. Understanding the regulatory components in the R. giardinii A3AY_RS01 genes might also lead to the creation of innovative ways for increasing the effectiveness of nitrogen fixation in other agriculturally important bacteria. Therefore, this study was aimed to predict regulatory element of R. giardinii DNA-binding response regulator A3AY_RS01 genes. Results: The locations for 19 % of the Transcriptional start site (TSSs) were within −300 bp relative to the start codon and ten candidate motifs were identified that are shared by at least 50 % of the R. giardinii A3AY_RS01 promoter input sequences from both strands. Motif 1 was revealed as the common promoter motif for all of R. giardinii A3AY_RS01 genes that serves as binding sites for TFs involved in the expression regulation of these genes. Hence, it was revealed that Motif 1 may serve as the binding site chiefly for Ferric uptake regulator (Fur) transcription factor family to regulate expression of A3AY_RS01 genes. High CpG density in the promoter than body regions were observed for most of the genes except for A3AY_RS0102950, A3AY_RS0120195 and A3AY_RS0131150 genes. Nonetheless, promoter areas were richer than body regions in both techniques. Conclusions: MV1 motif can serve as a binding site for the Fur transcription factor gene family in R. giardinii to regulate the expression of R. giardinii A3AY_RS01 genes. R. giardinii A3AY_RS01 genes are rich in CpG Islands, and play an important role in the regulation of the gene expression of nitrogen fixing in this bacterium.

Abstract Background Family caregivers play a crucial role in providing physical, emotional, and social support to the elderly, allowing them to maintain their independence and stay in their preferred living environment. However, family caregivers face numerous challenges and require specific knowledge and skills to provide effective care. Therefore, understanding the knowledge and skills required for effective family caregiving in elderly home care is vital to support both the caregivers and the elderly recipients. Methods The research was carried out in Mekelle City, Ethiopia, utilizing the phenomenology study design and purposive sampling technique. A total of twenty-two in-depth interviews were conducted. Individuals with experience in providing care for elderly people in their homes were targeted. Data was gathered through the use of an open-ended guide, transcribed word-for-word, inputted into ATLAS.ti8 software, and translated. Codes and themes were then extracted from the transcribed data, and a thematic analysis was performed. To minimize personal biases, the collected data were coded independently by the data collection assistants and the PI. The analysis was carried out by authors who were not involved in the data collection process. The interviews were conducted in a quiet place. Results A total of 22 in-depth interviews were conducted as part of this research. The results indicated that although the participants had knowledge about common health problems experienced by older people, they were uninformed about how to manage these conditions at home and were unaware of specialized healthcare resources for the elderly. Furthermore, they had limited knowledge about suitable exercise routines, strategies to prevent falls, and home healthcare practices for older individuals. On the other hand, they exhibited a solid comprehension and awareness of abusive behaviors specifically directed at older adults. Conclusion The results emphasized the importance of enhancing education and training for family caregivers in handling elderly health issues, raising awareness about specialized healthcare services catered to the elderly, improving understanding of activities of daily living (ADLs) and fall prevention, and offering inclusive training in healthcare tasks related to elder care. Recommendation Participants should receive comprehensive education and training programs to enhance their knowledge and skills in managing these conditions. Efforts should also be made to raise awareness about the availability of geriatric hospitals or specialized nurses for the elderly. Participants need to be educated about suitable exercise routines for the elderly and fall prevention strategies. Healthcare skills training is also necessary for participants, focusing on activities such as wound dressing, vital sign monitoring, and establishing a specific schedule for changing positions.

Abstract Introduction HIV/AIDS poses a significant health challenge in sub-Saharan African countries, with a disproportionate impact on women of reproductive age. The disparities in knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to family planning among women living with HIV can be intricate and multi-faceted. This study aimed to assess the knowledge, attitude, practice, and associated factors regarding family planning among the women living with HIV at the University of Gondar specialized hospital, Gondar, Ethiopia. Method A cross-sectional study was carried out at the University of Gondar Teaching Referral Hospital, focusing on HIV-positive women of reproductive age who visited the ART unit from July 8–28, 2022. Data collection involved the use of pre-tested, structured questionnaires administered through interviews. The gathered data were entered into the electronic Kobo Collect platform and subsequently exported for analysis using SPSS version 26. Descriptive summaries, including frequencies, means, and percentages, were presented through tables and figures. Logistic regression was employed to identify potential predictors, presenting adjusted odds ratios with a 95% confidence interval and a significance level set at a P-value of 0.05. Results A total of 328 study participants were included. About 93% of the study population had good knowledge about modern contraceptives, and about 94% of the study population had good knowledge about safer conception. Only 30.2% of the study population had knowledge of the dual contraceptive method. The attitude and practice of women towards family planning (FP) were 71.0% and 55.8%, respectively. The study revealed that the most commonly employed contraceptive method was injectable contraceptives, constituting 34.2% of usage. Having one and a greater number of children (AOR = 2.25, 95% CI: 1.10, 4.49), having discussions on fertility plans with healthcare providers (AOR = 2.20, 95% CI: 1.02, 4.761), and having good family planning practices (AOR = 2.15, 95% CI: 1.19, 3.87) were significantly associated with the attitude toward family planning. Married women (AOR = 1.88, 95% CI = 1.11, 3.1), able to read and write (AOR = 2.12, 95% CI:1.04,4.32), college and above educational level (AOR = 4.51, 95% CI:1.93,10.87), had discussion on fertility plan with healthcare providers (AOR = 5.09, 95% CI: 1.96, 13.24), knowledge about dual method (AOR = 1.95, CI: 1.08, 3.50), and knowledge about modern contraceptive methods (AOR = 7.24, 95% CI: 1.56, 33.58) were significantly associated with good practice of family planning. Conclusion Women living with HIV exhibited notably high levels of knowledge regarding modern contraceptive methods and safer conception. The knowledge of the dual method was low. More than half of the study population had good practice in family planning. More than two-thirds of HIV-positive reproductive-age women had a good attitude about family planning. Having one or a greater number of children, having a discussion on a fertility plan with a healthcare provider, and having a good practice of family planning were significantly associated with a good attitude toward family planning. Married women, education status, discussions on fertility plans with healthcare providers, knowledge about dual methods, and knowledge about modern contraceptive methods were significantly associated with good family planning practices. The stakeholders should design interventions based on the aforementioned factors to improve the attitude and practice of family planning.

Background Social media has become an integral platform for global information exchange and business interactions, emerging as a crucial tool for promoting products and services in the digital age. Despite its worldwide significance, local businesses, especially in Ethiopia, lag behind in leveraging social media for healthcare marketing. The scarcity of studies on social media adoption among healthcare providers in Ethiopia highlights the imperative for comprehensive research. Objective This study, conducted in Gondar Town, focused on private healthcare professionals, aiming to identify the determinants of their behavioral intention and usage behavior in adopting social media marketing. Method A facility-based cross-sectional survey involving 238 health professionals from private healthcare facilities in Gondar Town was conducted between March and June 2023. The study analyzed data using SPSS Version 26 and AMOS Structural Equation Modeling Version 23. Results All participants reported using social media platforms, with Facebook, Telegram, and YouTube being popular choices. Performance expectancy, social influence, facilitation condition, and behavioral intention significantly influenced healthcare professionals’ adoption of social media marketing. Performance expectancy and social influence exhibited the strongest impact on behavioral intention, acting as mediators influencing usage behavior. However, effort expectancy did not significantly influence behavioral intention. Age, gender, experience, and voluntariness showed no significant moderating effects. Conclusion This study contributes valuable insights into social media marketing adoption in the healthcare sector, emphasizing the critical role of various factors in shaping behavioral intention and usage behavior. The findings offer practical implications for private healthcare providers, policymakers, and marketers, guiding strategies to enhance patient communication and engagement through social media in Gondar Town.

Abstract The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has created a public health crisis. This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic performance of the Panbio and STANDARD Q COVID-19 antigen rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) against the real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) at one of the largest hospitals in southern Ethiopia. Nasopharyngeal samples, which were collected during the pandemic from individuals suspected of COVID-19 and stored at − 70 °C, were analyzed in June and July 2022. The performance of the Panbio COVID-19 antigen tests was evaluated in 200 randomly selected nasopharyngeal samples (100 positives and 100 negatives for severe acute respiratory syndrome 2 by RT-PCR). The STANDARD Q test was evaluated using 100 positive and 50 negative samples. The respective sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value and negative predictive values were 88%, 99%, 98.9% and 89.2% for the Panbio test and 91%, 98%, 98.9% and 84.5%, for the STANDARD Q test. The kappa values were 0.87 for the Panbio and 0.86 for the STANDARD Q test. Based on the findings presented here, the RDTs could be utilized as an alternative to conventional RT-PCR when it is challenging to diagnose COVID-19 owing to a lack of time, skilled lab personnel, or suitable equipment or electricity.

A pharmaceutical warehouse is part of the pharmaceutical supply chain and is essential to maintaining the quality and efficacy of veterinary pharmaceuticals for successful animal health service delivery. However, poor storage conditions, improper handling, and inappropriate use and disposal constitute challenges for veterinary supplies in animal health services. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the existing practices and challenges in warehouse management in government veterinary clinics and private veterinary drug wholesalers in Ethiopia. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 37 veterinary health facilities in four selected zones (south Gondar, west Gondar, central Gondar, and west Gojam zones) and Bahir Dar administrative city. Zones were selected using a simple random sampling technique. Data was collected using a structured questionnaire, pre-defined and tested observational checklists, and semi-structured interview guides. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the quantitative data, while qualitative data was analyzed using a thematic approach. The study revealed the presence of poor stock management practices, such as the absence of standard operating procedures for warehouse activities in ~59.5% of facilities surveyed. In none of the surveyed facilities, bin cards and system software utilization were satisfactory. The absence of disposal guidelines was detected in 83.8% of the facilities, and the practice of timely disposal of expired drugs was not satisfactory. Compared to the government veterinary clinics, private veterinary drug wholesalers had better storage practices (86.25%) following theoretical recommendations. The storage conditions in government clinics were rated poor at 48.3% (>80%, which is the limit to the acceptable rate for good storage conditions). The challenges of inadequate infrastructure, a lack of qualified staff, problems with the availability and affordability of pharmaceutical products, insufficient regulatory practice, and budget constraints were identified. A holistic approach involving related stakeholders should be followed to improve the existing challenges and the sector's efficiency.

Stripe rust, caused by Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici, is a severe disease in wheat worldwide, including Ethiopia, causing up to 100% wheat yield loss in the worst season. The use of resistant cultivars is considered to be the most effective and durable management technique for controlling the disease. Therefore, the present study targeted the genetic architecture of adult plant resistance to yellow rust in 178 wheat association panels. The panel was phenotyped for yellow rust adult-plant resistance at three locations. Phonological, yield, yield-related, and agro-morphological traits were recorded. The association panel was fingerprinted using the genotyping-by-sequencing (GBS) platform, and a total of 6,788 polymorphic single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were used for genome-wide association analysis to identify effective yellow rust resistance genes. The marker-trait association analysis was conducted using the Genome Association and Prediction Integrated Tool (GAPIT). The broad-sense heritability for the considered traits ranged from 74.52% to 88.64%, implying the presence of promising yellow rust resistance alleles in the association panel that could be deployed to improve wheat resistance to the disease. The overall linkage disequilibrium (LD) declined within an average physical distance of 31.44 Mbp at r2 = 0.2. Marker-trait association (MTA) analysis identified 148 loci significantly (p = 0.001) associated with yellow rust adult-plant resistance. Most of the detected resistance quantitative trait loci (QTLs) were located on the same chromosomes as previously reported QTLs for yellow rust resistance and mapped on chromosomes 1A, 1B, 1D, 2A, 2B, 2D, 3A, 3B, 3D, 4A, 4B, 4D, 5A, 5B, 6A, 6B, 7A, and 7D. However, 12 of the discovered MTAs were not previously documented in the wheat literature, suggesting that they could represent novel loci for stripe rust resistance. Zooming into the QTL regions in IWGSC RefSeq Annotation v1 identified crucial disease resistance-associated genes that are key in plants’ defense mechanisms against pathogen infections. The detected QTLs will be helpful for marker-assisted breeding of wheat to increase resistance to stripe rust. Generally, the present study identified putative QTLs for field resistance to yellow rust and some important agronomic traits. Most of the discovered QTLs have been reported previously, indicating the potential to improve wheat resistance to yellow rust by deploying the QTLs discovered by marker-assisted selection.

The COLOSS research association has been assessing honey bee colony losses, associated risk factors and management, focusing on Western countries but with a progressive international expansion. Here, we report the first survey on the loss rates of colonies in 2022/2023 in Ethiopia using COLOSS monitoring survey tools. A face-to-face interview questionnaire survey was conducted on 64 beekeepers selected from Oromia and Tigray regions. This covered 1713 honey bee colonies distributed in 68 apiaries. The percentages of colonies lost were significantly different between Oromia (24.1%) and Tigray (66.4%) regions. Colony losses were attributed as unsolvable queen problems (8% in Oromia; 10% in Tigray), natural disaster (32%; 82%), and empty hives or dead colonies (60%; 8%). The loss rate was significantly affected by queen replacement (p < 0.0001), use of natural comb (p < 0.0001), feed supplementation (p < 0.0001), region (p < 0.0001), varroa treatment (p < 0.0001), colony splitting (p < 0.01), and merging (p < 0.01). Beekeepers in Oromia managed more colonies and implemented improved practices compared to those in Tigray. However, all beekeepers in Oromia detected at least some bees with signs of deformed wing virus, compared to 76% of beekeepers in Tigray. In conclusion, the colony loss rate was significantly different between Oromia and Tigray regions due to differences in natural disasters, management, environment and health factors.

Children who experienced homelessness are most often unable to get secured and adequate housing. Such problems expose them to a range of destructive practices such as substance use. This study, therefore, was designed to evaluate the level and determinants of substance use by children who experienced homelessness in major cities of Northern Ethiopia.Methods: This cross-sectional study was undertaken from October 1, 2019 to February 30, 2020. We conducted street-based outreach searching to get a representative sample of the city’s children who experienced homelessness and a total of 422 were recruited. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS version 20. Regression analysis was done to identify factors associated with substance use and statistical significance was declared at p < 0.05 and 95% confidence interval.Results: More than 80% of the children who experienced homelessness use alcohol, cigarette or chat. Marriage status of parents before the child experiences homelessness being divorce (AOR = 8.53, 95% CI: 1.87– 38.89), occupational status of mother being a daily laborer (AOR = 2.78, 95% CI: 0.83, 9.31), child relationship status with parents before child experiences homelessness (AOR = 0.08, 95% CI: 0.02– 0.30) and parents’ residential status before child experiences homelessness being rural (AOR = 5.63, 95% CI: 1.77– 17.89) are the independent variables that established statistically significant association with the outcome variable, substance use.Conclusion and Recommendation: The majority of the children who experienced homelessness are exposed to substance use, particularly alcohol and cigarette. Efforts are needed by concerned bodies of the region to work on factors that predispose to homelessness and strategically safeguard the health and wellbeing of the children.Keywords: homelessness, substance use, children, Northern Ethiopia

Objective: Healthcare providers need to establish close relationships with patients planning to undergo major elective surgery as this helps produce positive patient outcomes. This study aimed at investigating surgery and anesthesia services and patients’ attitude toward informed consent at Ayder comprehensive specialized university hospital, in Northern Ethiopia. Material and Methods: A facility-based cross-sectional study was conducted in the biggest health facility in Northern Ethiopia. Four hundred ten patients with major elective surgery were recruited. A structured questionnaire was used to collect socio-demographics, anesthesia and surgery services and the attitude of patients toward informed consent. Descriptive results were presented using frequencies and tables. Regression analysis was accompanied by an odds ratio and a 95% confidence interval was run to identify factors associated with the outcome variable. Results: Study participants’ mean age was 36.1+11.7. Around two-thirds (71.7%) and one-fourth (26.6%) of the study participants were informed about their proposed surgical procedure and its possible complications, respectively. Two hundred ninety four (66.8%) and 88 (21.5%) were made aware of the type of anesthesia that was going to be administered and possible complications. About half (50.7%) had expressed a positive attitude towards informed consent. Rural residents have about twice (AOR=1.9; 95% CI: 1.06-2.73) higher odds of expressing a positive attitude towards the informed consent than their counterparts. Conclusion: The study revealed that the proportion of patients who were informed about their anesthesia-surgery services was moderate. Besides, patients’ attitude toward informed consent was poor. The residence was a good predictor of positive patients’ attitudes toward informed consent. Thus, healthcare professionals in the surgery department should establish clear and transparent communication with patients about surgery and anesthesia-related services.

Abstract A comprehensive assessment of immunological profiles during HIV-TB co-infection is essential to predict mortality, and facilitate the development of effective diagnostic assays, therapeutic agents, and vaccines. Expression levels of 105 immune-related genes were measured at enrolment and 6th month follow-up from 9 deceased HIV and TB coinfected patients who died between 3 and 7th months follow-up and at enrolment, 6th and 18th month from 18 survived matched controls groups for 2 years. Focused gene expression profiling was assessed from peripheral whole blood using a dual-color Reverse-Transcription Multiplex Ligation-dependent Probe Amplification assay. Eleven of the 105 selected genes were differentially expressed between deceased individuals and survivor-matched controls at baseline. At baseline, IL4δ2 was significantly more highly expressed in the deceased group than survivor matched controls, whereas CD3E, IL7R, PTPRCv1, CCL4, GNLY, BCL2, CCL5, NOD1, TLR3, and NLRP13 had significantly lower expression levels in the deceased group compared to survivor matched controls. At baseline, a non-parametric receiver operator characteristic curve was conducted to determine the prediction of mortality of single genes identified CCL5, PTPRCv1, CD3E, and IL7R with Area under the Curve of 0.86, 0.86, 0.86, and 0.85 respectively. The expression of these genes in the survived control was increased at the end of TB treatment from that at baseline, while decreased in the deceased group. The expression of PTPRCv1, CD3E, CCL5, and IL7R host genes in peripheral blood of patients with TB-HIV coinfected can potentially be used as a predictor of mortality in the Ethiopian setting. Anti-TB treatment might be less likely to restore gene expression in the level expression of the deceased group. Therefore, other new therapeutics that can restore these genes (PTPRCv1, CD3E, IL7R, and CCL5) in the deceased groups at baseline might be needed to save lives.

PurposeTrachoma is to be eliminated as a public health problem by 2020. To help the process of planning interventions where needed, and to provide a baseline for later comparison, we set out to complete the map of trachoma in Afar, Ethiopia, by estimating trachoma prevalence in evaluation units (EUs) of grouped districts ("woredas").MethodsWe conducted seven community-based surveys from August to October 2013, using standardised Global Trachoma Mapping Project (GTMP) survey methodologies.ResultsWe enumerated 5065 households and 18,177 individuals in seven EUs covering 19 of Afar's 29 woredas; the other ten were not accessible. 16,905 individuals (93.0%) were examined, of whom 9410 (55.7%) were female. One EU incorporating four woredas (Telalak, Dalefage, Dewe, Hadele Ele) was shown to require full implementation of the SAFE strategy for three years before impact survey, with a trachomatous inflammation-follicular (TF) prevalence in 1-9-year-olds of 17.1% (95%CI 9.4-25.5), and a trichiasis prevalence in adults aged ≥15 years of 1.2% (95%CI 0.6-2.0). Five EUs, covering 13 woredas (Berahle, Aba'ala, Dupti, Kurri, Elidihare, Ayesayeta, Afamboo, Bure Mudaitu, Gewane, Amibara, Dulecho, Dalolo, and Konebo), had TF prevalences in children of 5-9.9% and need one round of azithromycin mass treatment and implementation of the F and E components of SAFE before re-survey; three of these EUs had trichiasis prevalences in adults ≥0.2%. The final EU (Mile, Ada'ar) had a sub-threshold TF prevalence and a trichiasis prevalence in adults just >0.2%.ConclusionTrachoma is a public health problem in Afar, and implementation of the SAFE strategy is required.

BackgroundLipids and glucose concentrations in the blood rise during pregnancy period. Poor control of these analytes results in cardio metabolic dysfunction. Despite this, there are no documented studies which investigate lipids and glucose among pregnant women in Tigrai, northern Ethiopia.ObjectiveThe objective of this study was to assess lipid and glucose levels and identify their correlates among pregnant women in Tigrai, northern Ethiopia.MethodWe conducted a facility-based cross sectional study comprising of systematically selected 200 pregnant women from July to October 2021. Those who were severely ill were excluded from the study. We used a structured questionnaire to collect socio-demographic and clinical characteristics of pregnant women. Lipids such as triglycerides, low density lipoprotein, cholesterol and blood glucose were also measured using Cobas C311 chemistry machine from plasma samples. The data were analyzed using SPSS version 25. Logistic regression was performed and statistical significance was declared at p-value < 0.05.ResultProportion of pregnant women with cholesterol, triglyceride, low density lipoprotein and blood glucose levels above the upper limit of the normal range used for clinical decision were 26.5%, 43%, 44.5% and 21%, respectively. Pregnant women's income > = 10,000 ETB (AOR = 3.35; 95%CI: 1.46-7.66), age (AOR = 3.16; 95%CI: 1.03-9.68), gestational age 29-37 weeks (AOR = 8.02; 95%CI: 2.69-23.90) and having systolic blood pressure greater than 120 mmHg (AOR = 3.99; 95%CI: 1.64-9.75) demonstrated statistically significant association with raised levels of lipids.Conclusion and recommendationProportion of pregnant women with out of normal range values of lipids, particularly triglycerides and low density lipoprotein, is high. Gestational age is a strong predictor of increase in blood levels for both lipids. Provision of life style related health education and dietary intake to pregnant mothers matters. Moreover, monitoring lipid profile and glucose level during antenatal care period is essential.

The aim of transit-oriented development (TOD) is to create a livable urban environment by improving the integration between land-use and transportation systems. The capital city of Ethiopia, Addis Ababa, aims to promote a sustainable transportation system by launching its first light rail transit (LRT) network to control the current pattern of increased congestion and the need for mass transport. Planning for TOD around existing transit stations helps achieve improved transit choice and encourages local economic development. Therefore, this article proposes a methodology to quantitatively measure the existing TOD in terms of a TOD index within the walkable distance of transit nodes by measuring the criteria that define TOD levels. The TOD index is calculated for areas of 22 stations on the East-West LRT line of Addis Ababa. Depending on the value of the TOD index, certain stations are identified to have a potential TOD but poor transit accessibility. With these results, the recommendation to improve TOD planning can become accurate for each station, depending on its relevant factors. Such results also help identify each station's potential for TOD planning and its improvements toward future local developments.

For safe use of OTC medications, students are expected to have proper knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) towards OTC medications and subsequent adverse drug reactions (ADRs).Objective: The aim of this study was to assess KAP of OTC medications use and related factors among medical and pharmacy students at the University of Gondar, Gondar, Northwest Ethiopia.Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted. Data were collected using a self-administered questionnaire and analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 24. Chi-square analysis was conducted and multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to determine the association between KAP and OTC use and its related adverse effects. A P value of less than 0.05 was used to declare statistical significance.Results: A total of 380 students (229 medical students and 151 pharmacy students) participated in the study. The majority of the respondents 303 (79.7%) reported that they have the practice of self-medication. Fever 69 (80.2%), headache 21 (24.4%), and abdominal cramp 20 (23.3%) were the most common conditions for which the students go for self-medication while paracetamol 51 (59.3%) followed by non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) 44 (51.2%) were the most commonly used classes of drugs. An intention for time-saving caused by the waiting time due to crowds in medical consultation rooms 212 (77.4%) and a desire for quick relief 171 (62.4%) were the main reasons for the self-medication practice with OTC medications.Conclusion: Self-medication is widely practiced among medical and pharmacy students. Significant problems and malpractices were identified, such as sharing of OTC medications, the use of expired medicines, doubling the dose of medications when they were ineffective, storage of OTC medications, and not reading labels and expiry dates.Keywords: self-medication, pharmacy students, medical students, over-the-counter, Gondar

Objective: The aim of this study was to assess status of early warning indicators (EWIs) for HIV drug resistance in Ethiopia. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted among 90 health facilities (HFs) in 2015. Data were abstracted for ‘on time pill pickup’ (EWI-I), ‘Retention in care’ (EWI-II), ‘drug supply continuity’(EWI-III) and ‘dispensing practices’ (EWI-IV). Data analysis was conducted using WHO Excel tool and SPSS V20. Results: EWI-IV was excellent across all of the six rounds of EWI surveys conducted between 2008 and 2015. There were improvements in EWI-II over time from 55.6% to 81%. However, EWI-I and EWI-III declined from 86.7% to 31% and 100% to 41%, respectively. During 2015, half of the HFs in Gambella, Amhara and Southern Nation, Nationalities and people regional (SNNPR) states achieved excellent performance for EWI-I. Similarly, all HFs in Afar, Amhara, Dire Dawa, Harari and Tigray regions achieved excellent performance for EWI-II. There were also differences by level of HFs for EWI-III; 62% of hospitals and 28% of health centers were out of stock of one or more ARV drugs by 2015. Conclusion: Excellent performance of EWI-IV and improvement of EWI-II over time shall be maintained. The program shall further work to ensure medication adherence and supply continuity.
