Background: Prurigo of pregnancy (PP), a specific pregnancy dermatosis, has been associated with atopic background in the patient and/or the patient’s family. However, this association was not validated in some studies, and cases without atopic background have been reported. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the clinical features of PP not related to atopic background and search for comorbid conditions in medical and obstetric records. Methods: In this case series, patients with typical PP presentation (i.e., pruritic, discrete papulonodules on the extensor surfaces of the extremities) diagnosed at the dermatology clinics of tertiary referral hospitals were evaluated. The exclusion criteria included missing historical data, inadequate follow-up, laboratory test results suggestive of other pruritic conditions, history of atopic disease, and family history of atopy. Clinical and laboratory data including course, response to treatment, serum total immunoglobulin E level, and comorbidities in the medical and obstetric history were collected. Results: Twenty patients developed PP predominantly during the late second or early third trimester. Nine patients reported that itching developed first, versus 10 patients who reported that lesions started first (one patient was uncertain about onset). There was no recurrence postpartum (mean postpartum follow-up, 17 months). Serum total immunoglobulin E level was elevated in 3 of 14 patients tested (21.4%). Obstetric history (n = 12) included polymorphic eruption of pregnancy (16.6%), PP (16.6%), and gestational pruritus (8.3%). Two of 20 patients (10%) had a history of pruritic skin condition (prurigo nodularis and pruritus of unclear etiology) while not pregnant. Medical history (n = 20) included psychiatric disease (20%) (obsessive compulsive disorder and anxiety), hypothyroidism (10%), and obesity (10%). Conclusion: PP can develop in patients without an atopic background. This finding should be considered when classifying specific pregnancy dermatoses. A thorough medical and family history with a focus on atopy should be obtained from every patient with a gestational eruption, and patients should be counseled accordingly.

Purpose: To report our findings in a case of pellucid marginal corneal degeneration (PMCD) in the left eye and keratoconus (KC) in the right eye, and to review earlier cases of PMCD and KC. Observations: A 45-year-old woman visited our hospital with a complaint of reduced vision in her right eye. She was predisposed to allergies since childhood and had a habit of rubbing her eyes. Based on the results of the corneal topographic study, we diagnosed her with KC in the right eye and PMCD in the left eye. We prescribed a rigid, gas permeable contact lens and treated her allergic conjunctivitis with ocular medications. Three years after her initial visit, she developed a corneal perforation in the left eye. The perforation was closed by conservative treatment consisting of therapeutic soft contact lens wear. One year after the cornea healed, the corneal astigmatism in the left eye was about one-half of what it was before the corneal perforation. Her corrected visual acuity improved to 1.0 with conventional spectacles. Conclusionand Importance: We found a difference in the progression of KC and PMCD even when they occurred in same individual. We suggest that the atopic predisposition, which is considered a risk factor for acute hydrops in KC, to be a risk factor for acute hydrops and corneal perforation in eyes with PMCD.

Background: There is controversy in the literature regarding the potential relationship between atopic predisposition (AP) and serum cholesterol levels. To this purpose, we reviewed human studies that investigated this possible link. Methods: Following PRISMA guidelines, a literature search of PubMed and Science Direct for peer-reviewed journal articles in English from January 2003, with updates through to August 2016, was conducted. Relevant publications were reviewed that included pediatric and adult populations. Information on the study design, sample, intervention, comparators, outcome, time frame, and risk of bias were abstracted for each article. Results: Of 601 reviewed reports, 18 were included in this systematic review. Fifteen studies assessed the relationship between AP and serum cholesterol levels. Due to the lack both of observational and cross-sectional studies from the literature search at this time (only 8 studies also analyzed confounding factors) there is a high possibility of confounding variables (familial and genetic predisposition, age, gender, BMI, comorbidity, and medication status) that could not be ruled out. Conclusion: Existing studies are heterogeneous, making it difficult to draw broad conclusions. Future studies and more detailed analyses, considering confounding variables and including a larger and homogeneous population, are needed to strengthen the argument for a link between lipid metabolism and atopy. This article describes two cases of occupational protein contact dermatitis. In the first one, the subject was sensitive to fish meat, in the second one to sheep wool contained in a thread. The condition was proven by clinical picture, scratch test and specific IgE antibodies positivity in both subjects. Hygienic workplace investigations confirmed occupational contact and in both cases occupational skin disease was diagnosed and reported. Background: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and rhinovirus infections are the most common significant infant respiratory tract illnesses and are associated with increased but differential risks of childhood asthma. Objective: We sought to determine whether maternal asthma is associated with higher odds of infant respiratory tract infection with rhinovirus versus RSV and increased infection severity. Methods: Mother-infant dyads were enrolled from 2004-2008 during an infant respiratory tract infection (104 with rhinovirus and 279 with RSV). Mothers were classified into mutually exclusive groups (atopic asthma, nonatopic asthma, and no asthma). We determined viral cause using PCR and the severity of the infant’s respiratory tract infection using the bronchiolitis severity score. Adjusted relative odds of maternal asthma with viral cause were calculated by using logistic regression. Proportional odds models assessed the association of maternal asthma and infant infection severity. Results: Infants with a mother with atopic asthma compared with infants whose mothers did not have asthma were more likely to have rhinovirus versus RSV infection (adjusted odds ratio, 2.42; 95% CI, 1.19-4.90). Similarly, among infants with rhinovirus, having a mother with atopic asthma was associated with increased infection severity (adjusted odds ratio, 3.10; 95% CI, 1.21-7.98). This relationship was not seen among infants with RSV. Conclusions: Clinically significant rhinovirus infection during infancy was more strongly associated with having a mother with atopic asthma than clinically significant RSV infection. Having a mother with atopic asthma was associated with increased severity of infant rhinovirus but not RSV infections. Infants with rhinovirus were more likely to have a familial atopic predisposition, which might partly explain the subsequent increased asthma risk. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: Frontal fibrosing alopecia (FFA) is an underestimated scarring alopecia. This study aimed to examine epidemiological information, as well as predilection sites, associated diseases, and responses to therapy of patients with FFA. We also aimed to determine whether the extent or duration of disease correlated with the quality of life (QoL)., Methods: Twelve outpatients with FFA for > 2 years were analyzed. The Erlanger atopic score and the Functional Assessment of Non-life-threatening Conditions (FANLTC) for QoL-assessment were used as scoring systems., Results: All patients were women with a mean age of 70.3 years. Most patients did not have any symptoms during their disease progression and no therapy that was used showed any significant effects. FFA was associated with hypothyroidism. There were no correlations between hairline regression, duration of disease, atopic disposition, and QoL. The overall QoL was good., Conclusions: The present study shows that there is no correlation between the extent of FFA and QoL or atopic predisposition. There is a strong correlation between the incidence of thyroid disease and FFA.
