This paper connects the quadrirational Yang-Baxter maps, which are two-dimensional integrable discrete systems of KdV type, and the elliptic Cremona system, which is a higher analogue of discrete Painlev\'e equations associated with $\tilde{E}_8$ symmetry. This is a natural connection between integrable systems in different dimensions that is outside of the usual paradigm of reductions. This paper considers the planar figure of a combinatorial polytope or tessellation identified by the Coxeter symbol $k_{i,j}$ , inscribed in a conic, satisfying the geometric constraint that each octahedral cell has a centre. This realisation exists, and is movable, on account of some constraints being satisfied as a consequence of the others. A close connection to the birational group found originally by Coble in the different context of invariants for sets of points in projective space, allows to specify precisely a determining subset of vertices that may be freely chosen. This gives a unified geometric view of certain integrable discrete systems in one, two and three dimensions. Making contact with previous geometric accounts in the case of three dimensions, it is shown how the figure also manifests as a configuration of circles generalising the Clifford lattices, and how it can be applied to construct the spatial point-line configurations called the Desargues maps., Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures, 4 tables. The symmetry of single-molecule magnets dictates their spin quantum dynamics, influencing how such systems relax via quantum tunneling of magnetization (QTM). By reducing a system's symmetry, through the application of a magnetic field or uniaxial pressure, these dynamics can be modified. We report measurements of the magnetization dynamics of a crystalline sample of the high-symmetry [Mn12O12(O2CMe)16(MeOH)4]MeOH single-molecule magnet as a function of uniaxial pressure applied either parallel or perpendicular to the sample's "easy" magnetization axis. At temperatures between 1.8 and 3.3 K, magnetic hysteresis loops exhibit the characteristic steplike features that signal the occurrence of QTM. After applying uniaxial pressure to the sample in situ, both the magnitude and field position of the QTM steps changed. The step magnitudes were observed to grow as a function of pressure in both arrangements of pressure, while pressure applied along (perpendicular to) the sample's easy axis caused the resonant-tunneling fields to increase (decrease). These observations were compared with simulations in which the system's Hamiltonian parameters were changed. From these comparisons, we determined that parallel pressure induces changes to the second-order axial anisotropy parameter as well as either the fourth-order axial or fourth-order transverse parameter, or to both. In addition, we find that pressure applied perpendicular to the easy axis induces a rhombic anisotropy E ~ D/2000 per kbar that can be understood as deriving from a symmetry-breaking distortion of the molecule., Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures, version accepted by Phys. In this paper, we investigate a nonlinear non-autonomous elliptic difference equation, which was constructed by Ramani, Carstea and Grammaticos by integrable deautonomization of a periodic reduction of the discrete Krichever-Novikov equation, or Q4. We show how to construct it as a birational mapping on a rational surface blown up at eight points in $\mathbb P^1\times \mathbb P^1$, and find its affine Weyl symmetry, placing it in the geometric framework of the Painlev\'e equations. The initial value space is ell-$A_0^{(1)}$ and its symmetry group is $W(F_4^{(1)})$. We show that the deautonomization is consistent with the lattice-geometry of Q4 by giving an alternative construction, which is a reduction from Q4 in the usual sense. A more symmetric reduction of the same kind provides another example of a second-order integrable elliptic difference equation., Comment: 22 pages, 4 figures

We report on the design, fabrication and characterization of superconducting coplanar waveguide resonators with nanoscopic constrictions. By reducing the size of the center line down to 50 nm, the radio frequency currents are concentrated and the magnetic field in its vicinity is increased. The device characteristics are only slightly modified by the constrictions, with changes in resonance frequency lower than 1% and internal quality factors of the same order of magnitude as the original ones. These devices could enable the achievement of higher couplings to small magnetic samples or even to single molecular spins and have applications in circuit quantum electrodynamics, quantum computing and electron paramagnetic resonance., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

The inherent self-consistency properties of the six-point multi-ratio equation allow it to be considered on a domain associated with a T-shaped Coxeter-Dynkin diagram. This extends the KP lattice, which has A_N symmetry, and incorporates also KdV-type dynamics on a sub-domain with D_N symmetry, and Painleve dynamics on a sub-domain with affine-E8 symmetry. We establish that the quadrirational Yang-Baxter maps, considered on their symmetry-complete lattice, give an un-normalized form of the Painleve systems associated with affine-E8 symmetry. This is a unified representation bringing KdV-type and Painleve-type systems together outside of the usual paradigm of reductions. Our approach exploits the geometric characterisation of the Painleve equations and the formulation of both kinds of systems in terms of birational groups., Comment: 20 pages

The control of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) at the microscopic level has become a major research quest within the magnetism and spintronics communities. Altering the interaction between the spin and orbital degrees of freedom can fundamentally alter the electronic structure of a system, including electronic band inversion, and lead to new states of matter such as topological insulators. Whether based on high SOC lanthanides or transition metal ions, where the crystal field often quenches the orbital angular momentum, single-molecule magnets are an excellent playground for the study of the more fundamental aspects of this interaction and its intrinsic symmetries. This is the case of the molecular magnet reported in this article, where the trigonal symmetry imposed by the spatial arrangement of three constituent manganese ions and the corresponding orientations of their SOC anisotropy tensors result in a fascinating three-fold angular modulation of the quantum tunneling of the magnetization (QTM) rates never before observed, as well as in trigonal quantum interference patterns that mimic the form of a three-leaf clover., Comment: 20 pages, 5 figures, plus supplementary information

A transformation is obtained which completes the unification of quadrirational Yang-Baxter maps and known integrable multi-quadratic quad equations. By combining theory from these two classes of quad-graph models we find an extension of the known integrability feature, and show how this leads subsequently to a natural extension of the associated lattice geometry. The extended lattice is encoded in a birational representation of a particular sequence of Coxeter groups. In this setting the usual quad-graph is associated with a subgroup of type BC_n, and is part of a larger and more symmetric ambient space. The model also defines, for instance, integrable dynamics on a triangle-graph associated with a subgroup of type A_n, as well as finite degree-of-freedom dynamics, in the simplest cases associated with affine-E6 and affine-E8 subgroups. Underlying this structure is a class of biquadratic polynomials, that we call idempotent, which express the trisection of elliptic function periods algebraically via the addition law., Comment: 40 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables

We give integrable quad equations which are multi-quadratic (degree-two) counterparts of the well-known multi-affine (degree-one) equations classified by Adler, Bobenko and Suris (ABS). These multi-quadratic equations define multi-valued evolution from initial data, but our construction is based on the hypothesis that discriminants of the defining polynomial factorise in a particular way that allows to reformulate the equation as a single-valued system. Such reformulation comes at the cost of introducing auxiliary (edge) variables and augmenting the initial data. Like the multi-affine equations listed by ABS, these new models are consistent in multidimensions. We clarify their relationship with the ABS list by obtaining Backlund transformations connecting all but the primary multi-quadratic model back to equations from the multi-affine class., Comment: 21 pages, 2 figures, 3 tables

A multidimensionally consistent generalisation of Hirota's discrete KdV equation is proposed, it is a quad equation defined by a polynomial that is quadratic in each variable. Soliton solutions and interpretation of the model as superposition principle are given. It is discussed how an important property of the defining polynomial, a factorisation of discriminants, appears also in the few other known discrete integrable multi-quadratic models., Comment: 11 pages, 2 figures

We study the fully discrete elliptic integrable model Q4 and its immediate trigonometric and rational counterparts (Q3, Q2 and Q1). Singular boundary problems for these equations are systematised in the framework of global singularity analysis. We introduce a technique to obtain solutions of such problems, in particular constructing the exact solution on a regular singularity-bounded strip. The solution technique is based on the multidimensional consistency and uses new insights into these equations related to the singularity structure in multidimensions and the identification of an associated tau-function. The obtained special solutions can be identified with open boundary problems of the associated Toda-type systems, and have interesting application to the construction of periodic solutions., Comment: 24 pages, 5 figures

The type-Q equations lie on the top level of the hierarchy introduced by Adler, Bobenko and Suris (ABS) in their classification of discrete counterparts of KdV-type integrable partial differential equations. We ask what singularities are possible in the solutions of these equations, and examine the relationship between the singularities and the principal integrability feature of multidimensional consistency. These questions are considered in the global setting and therefore extend previous considerations of singularities which have been local. What emerges are some simple geometric criteria that determine the allowed singularities, and the interesting discovery that generically the presence of singularities leads to a breakdown in the global consistency of such systems despite their local consistency property. This failure to be globally consistent is quantified by introducing a natural notion of monodromy for isolated singularities., Comment: contribution to the SIDE-9 special issue of SIGMA

We present a new construction related to systems of polynomials which are consistent on a cube. The consistent polynomials underlie the integrability of discrete counterparts of integrable partial differential equations of Korteweg- de Vries-type (KdV-type). The construction reported here associates a Schwarzian variable to such systems. In the generic case, including the primary model Q4, the new variable satisfies the lattice Schwarzian Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) equat ion in three dimensions. For the degenerate sub-cases of Q4 the same construction reveals an invertible transformation to the lattice Schwarzian KdV equation., Comment: 17 pages

Elliptic N-soliton-type solutions, i.e. solutions emerging from the application of N consecutive B\"acklund transformations to an elliptic seed solution, are constructed for all equations in the ABS list of quadrilateral lattice equations, except for the case of the Q4 equation which is treated elsewhere. The main construction, which is based on an elliptic Cauchy matrix, is performed for the equation Q3, and by coalescence on certain auxiliary parameters, the corresponding solutions of the remaining equations in the list are obtained. Scalar multidimensionally consistent quadrilateral lattice equations are studied. We explore a confluence between the superposition principle for solutions related by the Backlund transformation, and the method of solving a Riccati map by exploiting two kn own particular solutions. This leads to an expression for the N-soliton-type solutions of a generic equation within this class. As a particular instance we give an explicit N-soliton solution for the primary model, which is Adler's lattice equation (or Q4)., Comment: 22 pages

It is shown that every scalar linear quadrilateral lattice equation lies within a family of similar equations, members of which are compatible between one another on a higher dimensional lattice. In recent years there have been new insights into the integrability of quadrilateral lattice equations, i.e. partial difference equations which are the natural discrete analogues of integrable partial differential equations in 1+1 dimensions. In the scalar (i.e. single-field) case there now exist classification results by Adler, Bobenko and Suris (ABS) leading to some new examples in addition to the lattice equations "of KdV type" that were known since the late 1970s and early 1980s. We give new Backlund transformations (BTs) for some known integrable (in the sense of being multidimensionally consistent) quadrilateral lattice equations. As opposed to the natural auto-BT inherent in every such equation, these BTs are of two other kinds. Specifically, it is found that some equations admit additional auto-BTs (with Backlund parameter), whilst some pairs of apparently distinct equations admit a BT which connects them., Comment: 9 pages

We construct N-soliton solutions to the equation called Q3 in the recent Adler-Bobenko-Suris classification. An essential ingredient in the construction is the relationship of $(Q3)_{\delta=0}$ to the equation proposed by Nijhoff, Quispel and Capel in 1983 (the NQC equation). This latter equation has two extra parameters, and depending on their sign choices we get a 4-to-1 relationship from NQC to $(Q3)_{\delta=0}$. This leads to a four-term background solution, and then to a 1-soliton solution using a Backlund transformation. Using the 1SS as a guide allows us to get the N-soliton solution in terms of the tau-function of the Hirota-Miwa equation., Comment: 11 pages

The BT of Adler's lattice equation is inherent in the equation itself by virtue of its multidimensional consistency. We refer to a solution of the equation that is related to itself by the composition of two BTs (with different Backlund parameters) as a 2-cycle of the BT. In this article we will show that such solutions are associated with a commuting one-parameter family of rank-2 (i.e., 2-variable), 2-valued mappings. We will construct the explicit solution of the mappings within this family and hence give the solutions of Adler's equation that are 2-cycles of the BT., Comment: 10 pages, contribution to the NEEDS 2007 proceedings

Adler's lattice equation has acquired the status of a master equation among 2D discrete integrable systems. In this paper we derive what we believe are the first explicit solutions of this equation. In particular it turns out necessary to establish a non-trivial seed solution from which soliton solutions can subsequently be constructed using the B\"acklund transformation. As a corollary we find the corresponding solutions of the Krichever-Novikov equation which is obtained from Adler's equation in a continuum limit., Comment: 9 pages pdf file
