Abstract

The Body Appreciation Scale-2 (BAS-2) is a widely used measure of a core facet of the positive body image construct. However, extant research concerning measurement invariance of the BAS-2 across a large number of nations remains limited. Here, we utilised the Body Image in Nature (BINS) dataset – with data collected between 2020 and 2022 – to assess measurement invariance of the BAS-2 across 65 nations, 40 languages, gender identities, and age groups. Multi-group confirmatory factor analysis indicated that full scalar invariance was upheld across all nations, languages, gender identities, and age groups, suggesting that the unidimensional BAS-2 model has widespread applicability. There were large differences across nations and languages in latent body appreciation, while differences across gender identities and age groups were negligible-to-small. Additionally, greater body appreciation was significantly associated with higher life satisfaction, being single (versus being married or in a committed relationship), and greater rurality (versus urbanicity). Across a subset of nations where nation-level data were available, greater body appreciation was also significantly associated with greater cultural distance from the United States and greater relative income inequality. These findings suggest that the BAS-2 likely captures a near-universal conceptualisation of the body appreciation construct, which should facilitate further cross-cultural research.

8. Voices from the Fields: Children of Migrant Farmworkers Tell Their Stories.

Abstract

This book contains interviews and poems in which the children of Mexican migrant farmworkers in California describe their daily lives and their dreams for the future. The nine interviews with children and adolescents aged 9-18 are presented as personal narratives that tell of long hard hours in the strawberry fields, constant moving from place to place and school to school, poor housing conditions, the additional hardships of being a non-Spanish-speaking Mexican Indian, the strong values and bonds of the Mexican family, life in a gang, the experiences of teenagers living and working away from their families, teenage motherhood, and educational success through perseverance. Education is consistently seen as the means to get out of the fields and attain a better life. Experiences in migrant educational programs such as Yo Puedo are described. This book also includes 10 poems in English and Spanish that were written by children enrolled in migrant programs in the Salinas Valley, many photographs, and a list of suggested reading materials. 10. Fortification of yogurts with vitamin D and calcium enhances the inhibition of serum parathyroid hormone and bone resorption markers: A double blind randomized controlled trial in women over 60 living in a community dwelling home

Abstract

Objective: To evaluate whether fortification of yogurts with vitamin D and calcium exerts an additional lowering effect on serum parathyroid hormone (PTH) and bone resorption markers (BRM) as compared to iso-caloric and iso-protein dairy products in aged white women at risk of fragility fractures. Design: A randomized double-blind controlled trial. Setting: A community dwelling home. Participants: Forty-eight women over 60 years (mean age 73.4). Intervention: Consumption during 84 days of two 125 g servings of either vitamin D and calcium-fortified yogurts (FY) at supplemental levels of 10 µg vitamin D3/d and 520 mg/d of calcium (total=800 mg/d), or non fortified control yogurts (CY) providing 280 mg/d of calcium. Measurements: Serum changes from baseline (D0) to D28, D56 and D84 in 25OHD, PTH and in two BRM: Tartrate-resistant-acid-phosphatase-isoform-5b (TRAP5b) and carboxy-terminal-cross-linked-telopeptide of type-I-collagen (CTX). Results: The 10 years risk of major and hip fractures were 13.1 and 5.0%, and 12.9 and 4.2 %, in FY and CY groups, respectively. From D0 to D84, serum 25OHD increased (mean±SE) from 34.3±2.4 to 56.3±2.4 nmol/L in FY (n=24) and from 35.0±2.5 to 41.3±3.0 nmol/L in CY (n=24), (P=0.00001). The corresponding changes in PTH were from 64.1±5.1 to 47.4±3.8 ng/L in FY and from 63.5±4.6 to 60.7±4.2 ng/L in CY (P=0.0011). After D84, TRAP5b was reduced significantly (P=0.0228) and CTX fell though not significantly (P=0.0773) in FY compared to CY. Conclusion: This trial in aged white women living in a community dwelling home at risk for osteoporotic fractures confirms that fortification of dairy products with vitamin D3 and calcium should provide a greater prevention of secondary hyperparathyroidism and accelerated bone resorption as compared to non-fortified equivalent foods.

32. Healthcare-worker-associated outbreak of Panton-Valentine-leukocidin-producing meticillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus in a large neonatal unit in London: successful targeted suppression therapy following failure of mass suppression therapy.

Abstract

Background: Staphylococcus aureus is a leading cause of healthcare-associated infection, and outbreaks have been associated with neonatal units and colonization of healthcare workers.Aim: To describe an outbreak of Panton-Valentine-leukocidin-producing meticillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus (PVL-MSSA) in a neonatal intensive care unit.Methods: Multi-disciplinary outbreak control investigation.Results: Over a period of 16 months, seven neonates were identified as positive for PVL-MSSA. Isolates were identified in blood cultures (two patients), nasopharyngeal aspirate (one patient) and rectal screening swabs (four patients). Epidemiological and whole-genome sequencing data suggested a long-term carrier as the most likely source. Despite two rounds of mass suppression therapy of staff, using chlorhexidine initially followed by octenidine-based regimens, positive patients continued to be identified. Staff screening subsequently identified one healthcare worker colonized with the outbreak strain of PVL-MSSA who underwent enhanced screening and further suppression therapy. No further cases have been identified to date. Compliance with mass suppression therapy was >95% and a post-administration staff satisfaction survey showed that the majority of staff agreed with the steps taken, with low rates of adverse reactions.Conclusion: S. aureus outbreaks are commonly associated with colonization of healthcare workers, and are challenging to manage within environments such as neonatal units. This study highlights the utility of whole-genome sequencing in identifying and mapping an outbreak. It is recommended that targeted staff screening should be considered early in similar outbreaks. In this setting, mass suppression therapy was not an effective strategy despite a high level of staff engagement and compliance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
