1. On-Tree Fruit Bagging and Cold Storage Maintain the Postharvest Quality of Mango Fruit

Abstract

The present study investigates the influence of on-tree fruit bagging on the quality and shelf life of mango (Mangifera indica L. cv. ‘Samar Bahisht Chaunsa’) during cold storage (12 °C ± 1; 85–90% RH) for 0, 10 and 20 days (d) and subsequent shelf storage under ambient conditions (25 °C ± 1; 60–65% RH). Fruits were covered with brown paper bags at the marble stage and then harvested at commercial maturity. Results showed that 0 d and 10 d cold-stored fruits, irrespective of bagging treatments, retained eatable quality and shelf-life up to 7 d and 5 d during ambient storage, respectively. However, bagged fruits had better postharvest performance compared with non-bagged fruits by exhibiting slower weight loss, higher fruit firmness, more total soluble solids, vitamin C and total phenolic content and higher activities of catalase and superoxide dismutase during cold storage and ambient shelf storage. On the other hand, 20 d cold-stored fruits, both bagged and non-bagged, were decayed when kept under ambient conditions. It is proposed that mango fruit bagging could be a potential cultural practice to preserve postharvest quality up to 10 d of cold storage, followed by 5 d under ambient conditions.

Abstract

The present study investigates the comparative effect of pre- and post-storage quarantine heat treatments (hot water treatment (HWT) and vapor heat treatment (VHT)) on the post-harvest performance of the mango fruit cv. ‘Chenab Gold’. The results indicate that the application of HWT at 48 °C for 60 min or VHT at 47 °C for 25 min after 21 days under cold storage enhanced the ethylene production and fruit weight loss, while decreasing fruit firmness and vitamin C content. Noticeably, the post-storage heat treatments ruptured the fruit and destroyed their market value. However, fruit treated with HWT or VHT at harvest exhibited slow weight loss, better skin color, and maintained biochemical attributes as compared to the control when kept under ambient storage conditions. Taken together, the application of hot water before storage has a positive influence on mango fruit quality, while post-storage heat treatment has a devastating impact upon fruit quality and shelf life, cancelling its potential commercial application.

Abstract

The multiplicative first Zagreb index of a graph H is defined as the product of the squares of the degrees of vertices of H. The line graph of a graph H is denoted by LH and is defined as the graph whose vertex set is the edge set of H where two vertices of LH are adjacent if and only if they are adjacent in H. The multiplicative first Zagreb index of the line graph of a graph H is referred to as the reformulated multiplicative first Zagreb index of H. This paper gives characterization of the unique graph attaining the minimum or maximum value of the reformulated multiplicative first Zagreb index in the class of all (i) trees of a fixed order (ii) connected unicyclic graphs of a fixed order.

4. Efficient Context Integration through Factorized Pyramidal Learning for Ultra-Lightweight Semantic Segmentation

Abstract

Semantic segmentation is a pixel-level prediction task to classify each pixel of the input image. Deep learning models, such as convolutional neural networks (CNNs), have been extremely successful in achieving excellent performances in this domain. However, mobile application, such as autonomous driving, demand real-time processing of incoming stream of images. Hence, achieving efficient architectures along with enhanced accuracy is of paramount importance. Since, accuracy and model size of CNNs are intrinsically contentious in nature, the challenge is to achieve a decent trade-off between accuracy and model size. To address this, we propose a novel Factorized Pyramidal Learning (FPL) module to aggregate rich contextual information in an efficient manner. On one hand, it uses a bank of convolutional filters with multiple dilation rates which leads to multi-scale context aggregation; crucial in achieving better accuracy. On the other hand, parameters are reduced by a careful factorization of the employed filters; crucial in achieving lightweight models. Moreover, we decompose the spatial pyramid into two stages which enables a simple and efficient feature fusion within the module to solve the notorious checkerboard effect. We also design a dedicated Feature-Image Reinforcement (FIR) unit to carry out the fusion operation of shallow and deep features with the downsampled versions of the input image. This gives an accuracy enhancement without increasing model parameters. Based on the FPL module and FIR unit, we propose an ultra-lightweight real-time network, called FPLNet, which achieves state-of-the-art accuracy-efficiency trade-off. More specifically, with only less than 0.5 million parameters, the proposed network achieves 66.93\% and 66.28\% mIoU on Cityscapes validation and test set, respectively. Moreover, FPLNet has a processing speed of 95.5 frames per second (FPS).

10. Determination of Voriconazole in Human Plasma Using RP-HPLC/UV-VIS Detection: Method Development and Validation; Subsequently Evaluation of Voriconazole Pharmacokinetic Profile in Pakistani Healthy Male Volunteers

Abstract

In this research work, an isocratic, reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet/visible detector method was developed for analysis of voriconazole standard (stock-solution) and in plasma samples. Optimization and validation of the method was carried out as per international guidelines. The method offered a simple liquid–liquid extraction technique, which exhibited best recovery of voriconazole along with fluconazole, i.e., internal standard. Different experimental conditions were tried and ultimately, the best outcomes were accomplished utilizing C-18 Perkin-Elmer® column with particulars of 150 mm length, 4.6 mm inner diameter and 5 μm particle size, protected by an RP-18 Perkin-Elmer® Pre-column guard cartridge with specifications of 10 μm particle size, 30 mm length and 4.6 mm inner diameter, utilizing mobile-phase of acetonitrile-water (ACN: H2O) in proportion of 60: 40 v/v, having a flow rate of 1.5 mL/min, and wavelength of 254 nm. All the analytes were observed to be separated in ≤7 min. A linear calibration curve was obtained at concentration range of 01–10 μg/mL of voriconazole. The correlation coefficient of voriconazole was observed to be 0.999, and average recovery (in percent) was 97.4%, whereas the relative standard deviation value was ≤2%. The lower limit of detection was 0.01 μg/mL, whereas, lower limit of quantification was 0.03 μg/mL, respectively. This developed method provided outstanding results of all validation parameters, i.e., recovery, accuracy, selectivity, precision and reproducibility. The method proposed for voriconazole analysis was applied effectively for further research investigation of voriconazole in human-plasma samples (to assess the pharmacokinetic parameters), pharmaceutical formulations and pharmacokinetic drug–drug interaction’s.

12. FREQUENCY OF CAROTID ATHEROSCLEROSIS IN CEREBRAL INFARCTION

Abstract

Objective:To know the frequency of carotid atherosclerosis in ischaemic stroke patients in our population using color Doppler ultrasound. Methodology:This is an observational study conducted in the department of Medicine Nishtar Hospital, Multan. All the patients admitted during this duration with CT scan proof of stroke were included in the study. Risk factors in all these patients were stratified. Doppler ultrasound was performed on all patients with ischaemic stroke according to the study protocol. Results:A total of 100 patients were included in this study over a period of five months. 66% of these were having cerebral infarction. Hypertension (72%), diabetes (35%), smoking (29%) and obesity (20%) were the common risk factors. The frequency of significant carotid atherosclerosis in acute ischaemic stroke patients was 21%. Conclusion:Carotid atherosclerosis is one of the most important indicators, predictors as well as an independent risk factor in the development of ischaemic stroke.

13. EFFICACY OF INTRAVENOUS ACETAMINOPHEN VERSUS KETAMINE FOR POSTOPERATIVE PAIN AFTER ABDOMINAL HYSTERECTOMY

Abstract

Objective;To determine the efficacy of intravenous acetaminophen versus ketamine for postoperative pain after abdominal hysterectomy.Material and Methods;A total of 114 women undergoing abdominal hysterectomy were taken in this study. The study was conducted from June 2017 to May 2018 at department of Anesthesiology, Nishtar Hospital, Multan.Results;Our study comprised of 114 ladies undergoing abdominal hysterectomy, mean age of the study cases was 54.13 ± 6.89 years (with minimum age of the patients was 39 years while maximum age was 68 years). Majority of our study cases i.e. 92 (80.7 %) had parity more than 3 and American Society of Anesthesiology (ASA) score level 1 in 93 (81.6%). Sixty one (53.1%) belonged to rural areas, while mean duration of surgery was 72.80 ± 11.32 minutes. Mean BMI level in our study cases was noted to be 23.98 ±4.17 Kg/m2and obesity was present in 34 (29.8%) of our study cases. Efficacy was noted in 60 (52.6 %) of our study cases. Efficacy was 73.7% study cases in group A while 18 (31.6%) in group B (p=0.000).Conclusion;Our study results support the use of intravenous acetaminophen (IVA) for pain management in patients undergoing abdominal hysterectomy compared with ketamine. Intravenous acetaminophen is safe, reliable and effective for the pain management in postoperative abdominal hysterectomy patients which was associated with shorter hospital stay and cost effective for the suffering families. No adverse reactions were noted in this study with the use of intravenous acetaminophen.
