Abstract Breast cancer (BC) significantly contributes to cancer-related mortality in women, underscoring the criticality of early detection for optimal patient outcomes. Mammography is a key tool for identifying and diagnosing breast abnormalities; however, accurately distinguishing malignant mass lesions remains challenging. To address this issue, we propose a novel deep learning approach for BC screening utilizing mammography images. Our proposed model comprises three distinct stages: data collection from established benchmark sources, image segmentation employing an Atrous Convolution-based Attentive and Adaptive Trans-Res-UNet (ACA-ATRUNet) architecture, and BC identification via an Atrous Convolution-based Attentive and Adaptive Multi-scale DenseNet (ACA-AMDN) model. The hyperparameters within the ACA-ATRUNet and ACA-AMDN models are optimized using the Modified Mussel Length-based Eurasian Oystercatcher Optimization (MML-EOO) algorithm. The performance is evaluated using a variety of metrics, and a comparative analysis against conventional methods is presented. Our experimental results reveal that the proposed BC detection framework attains superior precision rates in early disease detection, demonstrating its potential to enhance mammography-based screening methodologies.

Detecting lung diseases in medical images can be quite challenging for radiologists. In some cases, even experienced experts may struggle with accurately diagnosing chest diseases, leading to potential inaccuracies due to complex or unseen biomarkers. This review paper delves into various datasets and machine learning techniques employed in recent research for lung disease classification, focusing on pneumonia analysis using chest X-ray images. We explore conventional machine learning methods, pretrained deep learning models, customized convolutional neural networks (CNNs), and ensemble methods. A comprehensive comparison of different classification approaches is presented, encompassing data acquisition, preprocessing, feature extraction, and classification using machine vision, machine and deep learning, and explainable-AI (XAI). Our analysis highlights the superior performance of transfer learning-based methods using CNNs and ensemble models/features for lung disease classification. In addition, our comprehensive review offers insights for researchers in other medical domains too who utilize radiological images. By providing a thorough overview of various techniques, our work enables the establishment of effective strategies and identification of suitable methods for a wide range of challenges. Currently, beyond traditional evaluation metrics, researchers emphasize the importance of XAI techniques in machine and deep learning models and their applications in classification tasks. This incorporation helps in gaining a deeper understanding of their decision-making processes, leading to improved trust, transparency, and overall clinical decision-making. Our comprehensive review serves as a valuable resource for researchers and practitioners seeking not only to advance the field of lung disease detection using machine learning and XAI but also from other diverse domains.

Brain tumors, which are uncontrolled growths of brain cells, pose a threat to people worldwide. However, accurately classifying brain tumors through computerized methods has been difficult due to differences in size, shape, and location of the tumors and limitations in the medical field. Improved precision is critical in detecting brain tumors, as small errors in human judgments can result in increased mortality rates. This paper proposes a new method for improving early detection and decision-making in brain tumor severity using learning methodologies. Clinical datasets are used to obtain benchmark images of brain tumors, which undergo pre-processing, data augmentation with a Generative Adversarial Network, and classification with an Adaptive Layer Cascaded ResNet (ALCResNet) optimized with Improved Border Collie Optimization (IBCO). The abnormal images are then segmented using the DeepLabV3 model and fed into the ALCResNet for final classification into Meningioma, Glioma, or Pituitary. The IBCO algorithm-based ALCResNet model outperforms other heuristic classifiers for brain tumor classification and severity estimation, with improvements ranging from 1.3% to 4.4% over COA-ALCResNet, DHOA-ALCResNet, MVO-ALCResNet, and BCO-ALCResNet. The IBCO algorithm-based ALCResNet model also achieves higher accuracy than non-heuristic classifiers such as CNN, DNN, SVM, and ResNet, with improvements ranging from 2.4% to 3.6% for brain tumor classification and 0.9% to 3.8% for severity estimation. The proposed method offers an automated classification and grading system for brain tumors and improves the accuracy of brain tumor classification and severity estimation, promoting more precise decision-making regarding diagnosis and treatment.

Energy demand is continuously increasing around the globe, and the building sector contributes 40% of the total energy consumption, as per the studies. Fossil fuels are the primary cause of harmful gas emissions, thus causing environmental pollution. There is a dire need to introduce innovative techniques to fulfill energy demands while reducing environmental pollution. Phase change materials (PCMs) are the latent thermal storage materials that store thermal energy during phase change from solid to liquid state and vice versa. Thus, using PCMs in structural engineering offers one of the best options for rapidly developing energy-saving materials. To do so, ascaled model, concrete walls room, encapsulating locally available PCMs, was constructed in this study. Three locally available PCMs (glycerin, vegetable ghee, and ferric chloride hexahydrate) have been tested in a controlled environment. The model response is then evaluated for the energy-storing capacity of each PCM while considering the human comfort zone. From the test results, it is concluded that PCMs have a significant effect on improving the thermal energy efficiency of the model without any notable adverse effects. Over the completion of the test, after 12 hr, all the incorporated PCM showed positive results, and a maximum temperature loss of 2.25 K was observed. Among different PCMs, the optimal performance was observed for vegetable ghee, which showed a drop in temperature for all the points at the inner side of the wall, i.e., T3, T4, and T5.

Various supervised machine-learning algorithms for wind power forecasting have been developed in recent years to manage wind power fluctuations and effectively correlate to energy consumption; Meanwhile, the performance of the model does suffer from missing values. To address the issue of missing values in wind power forecast, this paper proposes two methods: Clue-based missing at random (CMAR) and patterned k-nearest Neighbor (PkNN). In addition, a hybrid wind energy forecasting system has been created that is built on 1D-Convolutional neural networks, which are used to extract features from raw input, and Long Short-Term Memory, which employs time series data internal representation learning to improve the accuracy of month-wise wind power forecasting. The efficacy of the proposed model on generated datasets is also compared to the classic machine learning model to check the generalization ability. The strength of the Convolutional LSTM has been estimated in terms of different performance metrics such as mean absolute error (MAE), root mean squared error (RMSE), R2, and explained variance score (EVS). The experimental results show that the use of the PkNN algorithm for data imputation; integrated with regression-based Convolutional LSTM is much more efficient in prediction over other deep neural network models.

Abstract Intelligent robotics and expert system applications in dentistry suffer from identification and detection problems due to the non-uniform brightness and low contrast in the captured images. Moreover, during the diagnostic process, exposure of sensitive facial parts to ionizing radiations (e.g., X-Rays) has several disadvantages and provides a limited angle for the view of vision. Capturing high-quality medical images with advanced digital devices is challenging, and processing these images distorts the contrast and visual quality. It curtails the performance of potential intelligent and expert systems and disincentives the early diagnosis of oral and dental diseases. The traditional enhancement methods are designed for specific conditions, and network-based methods rely on large-scale datasets with limited adaptability towards varying conditions. This paper proposed a novel and adaptive dental image enhancement strategy based on a small dataset and proposed a paired branch Denticle-Edification network (Ded-Net). The input dental images are decomposed into reflection and illumination in a multilayer Denticle network (De-Net). The subsequent enhancement operations are performed to remove the hidden degradation of reflection and illumination. The adaptive illumination consistency is maintained through the Edification network (Ed-Net). The network is regularized following the decomposition congruity of the input data and provides user-specific freedom of adaptability towards desired contrast levels. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method improves visibility and contrast and preserves the edges and boundaries of the low-contrast input images. It proves that the proposed method is suitable for intelligent and expert system applications for future dental imaging.

Alzheimer's is an acute degenerative disease affecting the elderly population all over the world. The detection of disease at an early stage in the absence of a large-scale annotated dataset is crucial to the clinical treatment for the prevention and early detection of Alzheimer's disease (AD). In this study, we propose a transfer learning base approach to classify various stages of AD. The proposed model can distinguish between normal control (NC), early mild cognitive impairment (EMCI), late mild cognitive impairment (LMCI), and AD. In this regard, we apply tissue segmentation to extract the gray matter from the MRI scans obtained from the Alzheimer's Disease National Initiative (ADNI) database. We utilize this gray matter to tune the pre-trained VGG architecture while freezing the features of the ImageNet database. It is achieved through the addition of a layer with step-wise freezing of the existing blocks in the network. It not only assists transfer learning but also contributes to learning new features efficiently. Extensive experiments are conducted and results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed approach.

Abstract Remote sensing image fusion plays important roles in numerous applications, including monitoring, metrology, and agriculture. Image fusion gathers essential information from several image sources and consolidates them into a single image called a fused image. The fused image involves relevant data, and it is more informative than any other images extracted from one source. This study proposed a pansharpening technique based on image filtering utilising a bilateral filter to generate high‐frequency details from panchromatic image. The various types of side window guided filters are employed to enhance the multispectral band from panchromatic image and then used these filters to adjust spatial data misfortune that happens when images are combined. Experimental results demonstrated that the proposed method provides consistent results concise with reported by the previous research in terms of subjective and objective assessments on remote sensing data.

Abstract In this paper, we propose a pansharpening method based on a convolutional autoencoder. The convolutional autoencoder is a sort of convolutional neural network (CNN) and objective to scale down the input dimension and typify image features with high exactness. First, the autoencoder network is trained to reduce the difference between the degraded panchromatic image patches and reconstruction output original panchromatic image patches. The intensity component, which is developed by adaptive intensity-hue-saturation (AIHS), is then delivered into the trained convolutional autoencoder network to generate an enhanced intensity component of the multi-spectral image. The pansharpening is accomplished by improving the panchromatic image from the enhanced intensity component using a multi-scale guided filter; then, the semantic detail is injected into the upsampled multi-spectral image. Real and degraded datasets are utilized for the experiments, which exhibit that the proposed technique has the ability to preserve the high spatial details and high spectral characteristics simultaneously. Furthermore, experimental results demonstrated that the proposed study performs state-of-the-art results in terms of subjective and objective assessments on remote sensing data.

The multiview low dynamic range images captured with sparse camera arrangement under ill-lighting conditions contain highlighted and shadow regions due to over-exposed and under-exposed regions. The processing of these images produces contrast distortion, and it is challenging to maintain relative brightness with color consistency. Moreover, the disparity map estimation faces the challenges of holes and artifacts due to a wide baseline and poor visibility, with a shared view of vision. In this article, we propose a multiview ghost-free image enhancement strategy for in-the-wild images with unknown exposure and geometry. We address the complex geometric alignment problem for a wide variational baseline among multiple sparsely arranged cameras. The features among multiple viewpoints are detected and matched for the image restoration. The restored image contains highlighted and shadow regions with a color imbalance problem. We synthesize virtual images following the intensity mapping function, which compensates for the relative brightness and color distortions. Finally, we fuse all the images to obtain high-quality images. The proposed method is more frequent and feasible for future multiview systems with varying baselines without relying on disparity maps. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method outperformed the state-of-the-art approaches.

The rapid growth of electronic documents are causing problems like unstructured data that need more time and effort to search a relevant document. Text Document Classification (TDC) has a great significance in information processing and retrieval where unstructured documents are organized into pre-defined classes. Urdu is the most favorite research language in South Asian languages because of its complex morphology, unique features, and lack of linguistic resources like standard datasets. As compared to short text, like sentiment analysis, long text classification needs more time and effort because of large vocabulary, more noise, and redundant information. Machine Learning (ML) and Deep Learning (DL) models have been widely used in text processing. Despite the major limitations of ML models, like learn directed features, these are the favorite methods for Urdu TDC. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first study of Urdu TDC using DL model. In this paper, we design a large multi-purpose and multi-format dataset that contain more than ten thousand documents organize into six classes. We use Single-layer Multisize Filters Convolutional Neural Network (SMFCNN) for classification and compare its performance with sixteen ML baseline models on three imbalanced datasets of various sizes. Further, we analyze the effects of preprocessing methods on SMFCNN performance. SMFCNN outperformed the baseline classifiers and achieved 95.4%, 91.8%, and 93.3% scores of accuracy on medium, large and small size dataset respectively. The designed dataset would be publically and freely available in different formats for future research in Urdu text processing.

The popularity of the internet, smartphones, and social networks has contributed to the proliferation of misleading information like fake news and fake reviews on news blogs, online newspapers, and e-commerce applications. Fake news has a worldwide impact and potential to change political scenarios, deceive people into increasing product sales, defaming politicians or celebrities, and misguiding visitors to stop visiting a place or country. Therefore, it is vital to find automatic methods to detect fake news online. In several past studies, the focus was the English language, but the resource-poor languages have been completely ignored because of the scarcity of labeled corpus. In this study, we investigate this issue in the Urdu language. Our contribution is threefold. First, we design an annotated corpus of Urdu news articles for the fake news detection tasks. Second, we explore three individual machine learning models to detect fake news. Third, we use five ensemble learning methods to ensemble the base-predictors’ predictions to improve the fake news detection system’s overall performance. Our experiment results on two Urdu news corpora show the superiority of ensemble models over individual machine learning models. Three performance metrics balanced accuracy, the area under the curve, and mean absolute error used to find that Ensemble Selection and Vote models outperform the other machine learning and ensemble learning models.

Patients who have Alzheimer’s disease (AD) pass through several irreversible stages, which ultimately result in the patient’s death. It is crucial to understand and detect AD at an early stage to slow down its progression due to the non-curable nature of the disease. Diagnostic techniques are primarily based on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and expensive high-dimensional 3D imaging data. Classic methods can hardly discriminate among the almost similar pixels of the brain patterns of various age groups. The recent deep learning-based methods can contribute to the detection of the various stages of AD but require large-scale datasets and face several challenges while using the 3D volumes directly. The extant deep learning-based work is mainly focused on binary classification, but it is challenging to detect multiple stages with these methods. In this work, we propose a deep learning-based multiclass classification method to distinguish amongst various stages for the early diagnosis of Alzheimer’s. The proposed method significantly handles data shortage challenges by augmentation and manages to classify the 2D images obtained after the efficient pre-processing of the publicly available Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) dataset. Our method achieves an accuracy of 98.9% with an F1 score of 96.3. Extensive experiments are performed, and overall results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art methods in terms of overall performance.

Objective: This study has been undertaken to assess the attitude and practice of General denral practitioner regarding TMD and referral to physiotherapy. Method and Material: The comparative cross sectional study was conducted with a sample population consisting of general dental practitioners of mirpurkhas Sindh. The total population estimated was about 55 GPD’s of mirpurkhas district. A convenient purposive sampling technique has been used to collect the data. The questionnaire consisted of three sections concerning general questions regarding referals to physiotherapy, attitude and practice of general dental practitioners regarding Tempromandibular joint dysfunctions (TMD). Results: The results shows 57.1% general dental practitioners believe 53.1% patients have neck pain and poor posture, 81.6% patients were referred to other healthcare provider, only 22.4% patients were referred to physiotherapist, 28.6% patients referred to physiotherapist just because of neck pain, only 22.4% patients with postural alterations were referred to physiotherapist 53.1 GPD’s have little confidence in assessing, therapeutic decision and treatment outcomes of TMD’s. 69.4% GPD’s provide medical management to the patients suffering from TMD while 44.9% GPD’s provide pharmacological management Conclusion: This study concluded that there is a need of TMD experts to deal with patients suffering from TMD. There is lack of knowledge regarding Physiotherapeutic benefits of TMD in General dental practitioners of Mirpurkhas, Sindh. Majority of GPD’s have very little confidence in making diagnosis and treating patient suffering from temporomandibular dysfunctions. Crop phosphorus (P) deficiency and poor utilization of added P is a major agricultural problem due to reduced solubility of soil P and rapid fixation or precipitation of applied P fertilizer in alkaline and calcareous soils. The effects of P-enriched compost and single superphosphate (SSP) fertilization on maize and wheat yields and P use efficiency in a maize–wheat rotation system were studied for three years. On a three-year average, grain yields of maize and wheat after application of P-enriched compost were increased by 18% and 24%, respectively, in comparison with sole addition of a recommended dose of SSP fertilizer. P-enriched compost addition to soil increased maize and wheat yields by 12% and 17%, respectively, compared to P fertilizer plus FYM incorporation. Soil available P concentration and P uptake were affected significantly by the addition of P-enriched compost. On average, increases in P recovery, use efficiency, and agronomic efficiency of 52%, 18%, and 43% were recorded in maize and increases of 50%, 23%, and 49% in wheat. P-enriched compost application yielded 30% and 32% higher economic returns in maize and wheat than SSP fertilization alone. Keywords: P-enriched compost, Maize, Wheat, Farmyard manure, P-uptake

Brain tumors have become a leading cause of death around the globe. The main reason for this epidemic is the difficulty conducting a timely diagnosis of the tumor. Fortunately, magnetic resonance images (MRI) are utilized to diagnose tumors in most cases. The performance of a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) depends on many factors (i.e., weight initialization, optimization, batches and epochs, learning rate, activation function, loss function, and network topology), data quality, and specific combinations of these model attributes. When we deal with a segmentation or classification problem, utilizing a single optimizer is considered weak testing or validity unless the decision of the selection of an optimizer is backed up by a strong argument. Therefore, optimizer selection processes are considered important to validate the usage of a single optimizer in order to attain these decision problems. In this paper, we provides a comprehensive comparative analysis of popular optimizers of CNN to benchmark the segmentation for improvement. In detail, we perform a comparative analysis of 10 different state-of-the-art gradient descent-based optimizers, namely Adaptive Gradient (Adagrad), Adaptive Delta (AdaDelta), Stochastic Gradient Descent (SGD), Adaptive Momentum (Adam), Cyclic Learning Rate (CLR), Adaptive Max Pooling (Adamax), Root Mean Square Propagation (RMS Prop), Nesterov Adaptive Momentum (Nadam), and Nesterov accelerated gradient (NAG) for CNN. The experiments were performed on the BraTS2015 data set. The Adam optimizer had the best accuracy of 99.2% in enhancing the CNN ability in classification and segmentation.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) may cause damage to the memory cells permanently, which results in the form of dementia. The diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease at an early stage is a problematic task for researchers. For this, machine learning and deep convolutional neural network (CNN) based approaches are readily available to solve various problems related to brain image data analysis. In clinical research, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is used to diagnose AD. For accurate classification of dementia stages, we need highly discriminative features obtained from MRI images. Recently advanced deep CNN-based models successfully proved their accuracy. However, due to a smaller number of image samples available in the datasets, there exist problems of over-fitting hindering the performance of deep learning approaches. In this research, we developed a Siamese convolutional neural network (SCNN) model inspired by VGG-16 (also called Oxford Net) to classify dementia stages. In our approach, we extend the insufficient and imbalanced data by using augmentation approaches. Experiments are performed on a publicly available dataset open access series of imaging studies (OASIS), by using the proposed approach, an excellent test accuracy of 99.05% is achieved for the classification of dementia stages. We compared our model with the state-of-the-art models and discovered that the proposed model outperformed the state-of-the-art models in terms of performance, efficiency, and accuracy.

Meningioma is an all-around perceived tumor of the central nervous system, it rarely shows up as an extracranial tumor optionally outspreading into the paranasal sinuses. Meningiomas emerge from arachnoid cap cells that surround the brain, they are progressively developing and are generally not associated with significant cerebral edema. They manifest themselves by the pressure effects on circumscribing neural structures.1 Out of all intracranial meningiomas, almost 20% may have extracranial/extraspinal extension. Farr et al. reported orbital cavity as the commonest site of extracranial meningiomas .However, when the soft tissues, middle ear, orbit are precluded, the rate drops to under 1%. 2
