The Karkonosze National Park is affected by long-distance metal air transport of anthropogenic contamination as well as by tourist activity. Therefore, concentrations of Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn were evaluated in soil as well as in vital and non-vital fronds of Athyrium distentifolium Opiz collected in the middle of the growing season from glacial cirques in the Karkonosze. Additionally, fronds of the same species turning brown in autumn were collected from the same sampling sites. The health of ferns was impacted by the contents of Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn in fronds, which may indicate that A. distentifolium uses elements accumulated in its tissues as defence against pathogens. Individuals from higher altitudes contained higher concentrations of Cd, Cu, Ni, Fe and Pb than those from lower altitudes. Autumn fronds of A. distentifolium contained a significantly higher concentration of Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn and Pb than vital summer fronds, which may indicate sequestration of these elements in senescing fronds probably to remove potentially harmful metals. Non-vital ferns were a better accumulator of Pb than vital ones, while both types of ferns accumulated Mn in a similar way. Acidic forest soils with two dominant understories, bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus L.) or alpine lady fern (Athyrium distentifolium Tausch ex Opiz), have been investigated to evaluate the influence of the understory on sorption properties and aluminium behaviour. We investigated acidity, cation exchange properties, organic matter content (SOM) and quality as well as Al bonding to organic matter in humus horizons of soils taken from two different locations. SOM was the major contributor to total cation exchange capacity (CECt) and effective cation exchange capacity (CECe), and a strong relationship was found between SOM and both CECt and CECe, independently of the understory and location. SOM differed in quality, having more fulvic acids in soils under bilberry than in soils under alpine lady fern. For that reason, SOM in soils under bilberry complexed more Al in the exchangeable form in the soluble fulvic acid fraction such that they could be easily washed out, while in soils under alpine lady fern aluminium was mainly bound more stably. We also found that the chemical character of Al depended on the understory type. In soils under bilberry the relation between base saturation and pH could be successfully modelled by a modified Henderson–Hasselbalch equation when Al was considered as a base cation, which is typical for forest podzols. However, in soils under alpine lady fern, this model was efficient only when Al was treated as an acid cation. Regeneration of coniferous tree species depends on forest structures related to tree death: canopy gaps, decaying wood, and windthrow mounds and pits. This also applies to Norway spruce (Picea abies), which abundantly regenerates from seeds on dead wood and windthrow mounds, and which benefits from gaps in the forest canopy. Accumulated evidence shows much lower mortality of seedlings on elevated structures than on soil, but for saplings the long-term mortality pattern is poorly known. We studied Norway spruce sapling mortality in a natural old-growth subalpine forest in the Western Carpathians (S Poland), tracking the fate of 1304 saplings growing in different conditions. We found that the 25-year sapling mortality rate significantly differed between three types of microsites, being highest on dead wood (49%), intermediate on undisturbed soil (41%) and lowest on mounds (30%). Sapling mortality decreased with increasing canopy openness. Mortality was highest for medium-sized saplings (2–3 m high), regardless of microsite type and mortality cause. For saplings growing on dead wood, mortality increased with increasing decay class of the wood. For those growing on soil, mortality was higher in patches of Athyrium distentifolium than when surrounded by Vaccinium myrtillus and Dryopteris dilatata. We did not detect differences in mortality between saplings growing next to tree trunks and those growing away from them. The pattern of sapling mortality differed from that of seedlings, but it did not change the regeneration pattern over microsites, which is established at the seedling stage. In particular, we believe that the considerable differences in mortality rates between dead wood and the other microsites at the sapling stage cannot counterbalance increased seedling recruitment and survival on dead wood. more...

Tůmova D., Zahora J., Tůma I. 2014: The biological activity of soil in Norway spruce forests and in fern Athyrium distentifolium Tausch ex Opiz stands on deforested polluted sites in the Beskydy Mts. – Beskydy, 7 (1): 9–20 The study is focussed on the biological activity of acid forest soil with aim to characterize some of its parameters. Activity of acidic soil phosphatase, basal and potentional respiration were compared and viable plate counts of microorganism colonies were evaluated. The soils of the Kněhyně region in the Moravian-Silesian Beskids Mts. are intensively influenced by acid deposition. They were sampled from area where often occurrence of fern Athyrium distentifolium Tausch ex Opiz was recorded. Above mentioned characteristics (values of parameters) were determined in soil samples collected in fern stands (close to the periphery of fern individuals with rich root system), from site between individual ferns and from the rest of neighbouring spruce community without distinct herbage layer. In majority of studied cases, increased values of all monitored parameters were found in space of A. distentifolium roots accumulated close by fern base. Bare soil between individual fern plants often shows on a lower biological soil activity, however these differences were mostly not statistically significant. On the contrary, values of studied soil parameters recorded in the rest of neighbouring forest community without distinct herbage layer, reached mostly the lowest values and they often differ significantly from values assessed in soil taken near the A. distentifolium roots. more...

This research is a continuation of investigations on the biogeochemistry of metal accumulation of the fern Athyrium distentifolium in the Tatra National Park in Poland. This species, abundantly growing throughout the Tatra mountains, was sampled from sites with identical type of bedrocks (granites/gneisses) at various altitudes between 1000 and 2050 m a.s.l. Concentrations of the elements Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn were measured in the fern. This investigation was done to verify the hypothesis that differences in the elemental composition of A. distentifolium (growing on the same type of substrate) reflect the differences of the atmospheric metal deposition at various altitudes. We verified this hypothesis using the Market Basket Analysis technique. MBA revealed that at low altitude (1000–1500 m a.s.l.) A. distentifolium contains very low concentrations of Cd, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn. At a medium altitude (1501–1700 m a.s.l.) the fern contains a very high concentration of Pb and at a high altitude (1701–2050 m a.s.l.) the fern contains very high concentrations of Cd, Cr, Mn, Ni and Zn. The different altitudes on which A. distentifolium grew influenced the concentrations of elements accumulated in this species. Our investigation pointed out that A. distentifolium is able to accumulate elevated levels of metals and therefore may be used in controlling metal pollution. In addition A. distentifolium gives comparable bioindicative results as the moss P. schreberi in the same Tatra mountains. No information is currently available as to whether highly damaged Picea abies stands with no generative reproduction at the ecotone of the alpine timberline can be effectively restored by an artificial layering. We asked how much vitality of the mother tree, the forest habitat type and the dominant understory plant species affect the long-term mortality and layering success of artificially buried branches. A total of 1300 branches of P. abies were artificially buried in the Giant Mountains in 1989, 1990 and 1991 and monitored during the subsequent 5 years for their mortality and rooting. Part of the buried branches was then checked for the mortality again after 20 years, in 2010. The cumulative mortality of the buried branches was 3.5%, 3.8%, 6%, 7.6%, 8.8% and 36% in the first, second, third, fourth, fifth and twentieth year, respectively. The mortality was the highest for very weak mother trees, forest habitat types affected by the high water table (Deschampsia cespitosa and Sphagnum sp. in the understory), the windward (western) position of buried branches in relation to the mother tree and for stands with dominant Athyrium distentifolium, where high infection by Herpotrichia nigra (black snow mould) was recorded. Roots developed on 3–5 year old parts of buried branches during 2 years, therefore the burial of young, rather than old, parts of branches is recommended for the practical use. The tall fern (Athyrium distentifolium Tausch ex Opiz) forms large stands in many deforested sites in Central European mountains. In the present study, we want to demonstrate that the effect of ferns on the leaching of nutrients is the same at low and high nitrogen (N) deposition. Free-tension lysimeters with growing ferns, and some with bare forest soil were installed in field conditions in 2006. We monitored the chemistry of lysimetric water at ambient and enhanced (plus 50 kg N ha-1) levels of N deposition during five growing seasons. Results indicate that during the growing seasons ferns slightly decreased of acidity and conductivity of lysimetric water and substantially reduced losses of base cations (Ca2+ and Mg2+). The concentration of leached base cations was three to seven times higher from bare forest soil than from lysimeters with ferns. Higher N accumulation in fern biomass coincides with lower contents of leached N in lysimetric water. The reduced losses of base cations were due to the ability of Athyrium to absorb and accumulate nutrients in large amounts in living biomass and in dead undecomposed plant matter and particularly in below-ground biomass. more...

We measured aboveground biomass allocation and resorption of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) in the fronds of a winter-deciduous fern Athyrium distentifolium in ambient and N-enhanced treatments. Studies were done in the Moravian-Silesian Beskydy Mts. (Czech Republic) during 2007 and 2008. Athyrium distentifolium formed taller fronds and petioles and allocated more biomass to supporting tissue relative to photosynthetically active leaf tissue in response to N addition. Resorption of P from green fronds was more efficient than N resorption (on average 50% P, 21% N from supporting and 44% P, 24% N from photosynthetic tissues were withdrawn during senescence). The N/P-ratios were higher in photosynthetic tissue (10.8 in 2007 and 13.0 in 2008) in comparison with supporting tissue (5.5 and 7.7, respectively). In N-enhanced treatment, a positive relationship was found between the amount of supporting tissue relative to photosynthetic tissue and resorption of nutrients from photosynthetic tissue. The aims of this paper are to detect floristic variation within different types of tall-fern dominated vegetation and to interpret these patterns in terms of environmental variables. Numerical approaches have been applied to a large and varied vegetational data-set with associated environmental data from stands dominated by Athyrium distentifolium, Thelypteris limbosperma, and Matteuccia struthiopteris in different parts of western Norway. The numerical procedures of two-way indicator species analysis, simple discriminant functions, and canonical correspondence analysis have been used, and the strengths and weaknesses of these as tools in discerning vegetational-environmental relationships are discussed. For each of the 96 quadrats investigated, 17 environmental variables were measured. The investigation shows that some of the observed differences in vegetational composition can be explained in terms of relatively simple soil and climatic variables measured for each quadrat. The ferns appear to be ecologically well separated. T. limbosperma-dominaled stands are mainly characterised by low soil fertility, high January temperature, and high humidity. Woodsiaceae. Athyrium distentifolium, Alpine lady-fern. Fronds bi-pinnate, ovate-lanceolate, yellow-green 20 cm to over 100 cm, arising in a 'shuttlecock' from a central crown. Stipe straight, one fifth to one quarter the length of the blade with pale brown scales, usually broad, but occasionally narrow. Pinnae widely spaced near base of the frond, and sometimes deflexed, crowded near the tip, meeting the rachis at an angle of 900 at the midpoint of the blade, or slightly ascending. Pinnules broadest at the base, tapering to a point. Sori circular, with irregular filaments making up a rudimentary indusium when young, soon obscured as the sori grow. Sori concentrated in the upper part of the frond, becoming sparse towards the base. Number of sori varies with size of frond. Plants frequently infertile (McHaffie et al. 2002). Athyrium distentifolium var.flexile Newman's lady-fern. Fronds bi-pinnate, narrow, blue-green, 10-40 cm, arising from a central crown, erect or sharply angled near the base of the rachis to lie nearly flat against the substrate. Stipe short, one sixth to one eighth the length of the blade, often densely covered with broad, pale scales that may continue beyond the midpoint of the blade. Blade broadest near the base, or nearer the mid-point. Pinnae close together near base of frond, often strongly deflexed to at least half way up the frond. Uppermost pinnae widely spaced. Pinnules taper towards the base. Sori circular, sometimes with only a few sporangia; rudimentary indusium visible while the sorus is still immature. Sori concentrated at base of the frond, becoming less frequent towards the tip. Plants usually fertile (McHaffie et al. 2002). Athyrium distentifolium is a chionophilous fern that grows at altitudes or latitudes which ensure long-lying winter snow cover. Deep snow provides insulation from severe winters, and prevents early growth in a mild spring. Only a limited number of species can tolerate these conditions and this reduces competition. Although previously known as a Scandinavian and continental European species, A. distentifolium was not recognized in Britain until 1844 (Newman 1851). Within Britain it is found only in Scotland where it is confined to the remote Highlands. Soon after it was identified, another similar taxon of uncertain taxonomic status was described (Backhouse 1852). Vegetation dynamics of three forest communities were studied by resampling of releves recorded in the 1970s in the Bohemian Forest (Sumava Mountains). Results of multivariate analysis (RDA) confirmed significant time changes in species composition of the climax (Calamagrostio-Piceetum) and waterlogged (Bazzanio-Piceetum) spruce forests. The changes in the sphagnum-rich waterlogged spruce forests (Sphagno-Piceetum) are close to the level of significance. The main vegetation changes are represented by a decrease in cover and/or frequency of hygrophilous or sciophilous species (e.g. Athyrium distentifolium, Oxalis acetosella) in climax spruce forests, and an abundant increase of species, indicating a preference to drier stands or better light conditions (e.g. Calamagrostis villosa, Vaccinium vitis-idaea or Avenella flexuosa), in waterlogged spruce forests. We also found a higher proportion of meadow species (e.g. Anthoxanthum odoratum, Festuca rubra or Luzula multiflora) in the newly recorded releves from waterlogged forests. Analysis of species number per plot showed a remarkable shift to species-rich communities, especially in waterlogged stands. We tried to find the possible factors responsible for the observed changes. Unfortunately, only indirect measurement of environmental factors using Ellenberg's indicator values could be used and did not yield sufficient results. Thus, the changes observed in climax spruce forests were ascribed mainly to a decrease in canopy cover, which was directly estimated. In waterlogged forests, a complex of several general factors, which influence the climax spruce forest, had to be taken into account, such as: (i) a decrease in atmospheric acidification during the last 10-15 years and subsequent improvement in soil conditions, especially in waterlogged stands; (ii) fragmentation of forests as a result of bark-beetles attack; (iii) climate warming documented by long-term local meteorological measurements. # 2003 Elsevier B.V. The utility of EST-simple sequence repeats (EST-SSRs) was evaluated in the fern Athyrium distentifolium. From 1152 frond cDNA clones, 165 microsatellites, including di-, tri-, tetra and penta-nucleotide repeat motifs, were identified. Primer design was possible for 74 of the SSRs; subsequent screening of 10 loci on 186 individuals from six natural populations revealed between two and seven alleles per locus and expected heterozygosity (HE) estimates ranging from 0.027 to 0.809. Eight of these loci were further examined for cross-species and cross-generic amplification in other Woodsiaceae species, and polymorphic products were detected. EST-derived SSRs provide robust, informative and potentially transferable polymorphic markers suitable for biodiversity research. more...

The field-layer structure relative to the distribution of canopy gaps was analysed in a subalpine spruce forest in the Babia Gora massif – one of the highest in the Polish West Carpathians. Nineteen synusiae (floristically, physiognomically and ecologically homogenous one-layered vegetation units) in the field-layer were distinguished on the basis of the dominance of 8 vascular plants and 1 moss species. The presence of synusiae was noted in a grid of points spaced at 10 × 10 m which was established in a 14.4 ha area. This grid was then laid over a map of gap distribution. The main results are: 1. Nearly 2/3 of the area was covered with two mono-dominant synusiae: Athyrium distentifolium and Vaccinium myrtillus. 2. The spatial structure of the field layer was related to the distribution of gaps. A significant departure from a random distribution was noted for eight synusiae, which together covered 88% of the area under the spruce canopy and 92% in gaps. 3. The percentage of area covered by Athyrium distentifolium in gaps was nearly twice as great as outside them. A positive relationship to gaps also showed patches dominated by Calamagrostis villosa and Dryopteris dilatata + Rubus idaeus, while a negative relationship occurred for synusiae dominated by: Dryopteris dilatata, Vaccinium myrtillus, V. myrtillus + D. dilatata, and V. myrtillus + Polytrichum formosum. 4. There were significant differences in the structure of the field layer between the understory of closed stands and in gaps larger than 50 m2. This means that even a small-scale disturbance touching a few trees and causing only a small modification in light and soil conditions can result in considerable changes in the field-layer vegetation in subalpine spruce forests. more...

○ Experiments were conducted to determine the genetic relationship between the alpine fern Athyrium distentifolium and the Scottish endemic taxon A. distentifolium var. flexile. ○ Segregation of the taxa was studied after growing sporophytes from spore families, and after selfing and crossing gametophytes. The growth of both gametophytes and sporophytes was measured under a range of nutrient regimes. ○ The distinction between the two taxa is due to variation at a single gene with pleiotropic effects expressed at both the sporophyte and gametophyte stages. A. distentifolium sporophytes (genotypes A D /A D or A D /A F ) are taller, have fewer fronds, and produce fewer spores than A. distentifolium var. flexile sporophytes (genotype A F /A F ). Gametophytes containing the A F allele have a 50% higher growth rate than those with the A D allele on a range of media. ○ The polymorphism may be maintained by a balance between selection for and against the A F allele at the gametophyte and sporophyte stages of the life cycle, respectively. Summary Athyrium distentifolium is found in scattered sites in the Central and Northern Highlands of Scotland. In a few localities in the Central Highlands there is also an endemic variety: A. distentifolium var. flexile. Both types are found together in polymorphic populations with the two distinct forms. A. distentifolium can only grow well with moderate nutrients and in the polymorphic populations A. distentifolium is smaller than elsewhere and frequently infertile. A. distentifolium var. flexile is a smaller plant which is more frequently fertile than A. distentifolium in polymorphic populations and appears particularly well adapted to grow in stressful environments with low nutrient status. more...

Species composition of the understory of spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karsten) and beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) forests subjected to intense air pollution stress in the Krkonose Mts., Czech Republic, showed directional changes over the last 15 years. The changes were documented with repeated observations of 29 permanent plots, initiated in 1980 and analysed with constrained ordination methods (Canonical Correspondence Analysis). Ground layer changes were mainly associated with the loss of canopy foliage from air pollution stress. The increased amount of the light at ground level resulted in increased herb cover. The initially dominant species (e.g., Calamagrostis villosa (Chaix) J. F. Gmelin, Deschampsia flexuosa (L.) P. B., Vaccinium myrtillus L., Athyrium distentifolium Tausch) were those that increased in cover. Moss cover, and moss and herb richness, declined over the course of the study. Thus, the changes in tree canopy are accompanied with changes in the forest understory, which in turn can affect the dynamics of these forests. more...

The distribution and abundance of Thelypteris limbosperma, Athyrium distentifolium, and Matteuccia struthiopteris are modelled statistically in relation to 14 environmental variables along the major climatic, topographic, and edaphic gradients in western Norway. The data are from 624 stands from which measurements or estimates of mean January and mean July temperatures, humidity, altitude, aspect, and slope are available. From 182 of these stands eight soil variables have also been measured. The species responses are quantified by two numerical methods: Gaussian logit regression and weighted averaging (WA) regression. The estimated WA optima suggest that A. distentifolium has an ecological preference for low July and January temperatures, high altitudes, and soils of low-medium pH and base content. The species shows statistically significant Gaussian responses with summer temperature, humidity (= Martonnes humidity index), altitude, slope, aspect, pH, cation exchange capacity, and base saturation with optima of 8.7 °C, 188.9, 1220 m, 28°, 29°, 4.8, 13.77 mEq 100 g dry soil-1, and 13.4%, respectively. These suggest that the occurrence and relative abundance of A. distentifolium are well predicted by summer temperature, topography, and soil pH and base status. T. limbosperma has WA optima that suggest that it favours moderately high winter and summer temperatures, high humidity, medium altitude, and soils of low pH and base content. It has significant Gaussian responses to summer temperature (optimum =12.6 °C), winter temperature (-1.8 °C), humidity (179.2), altitude (459.5 m), slope (22.5°), and Na (0.7 mg 100 g dry soil-1). These suggest that climatic factors, altitude, and slope are significant predictors for its occurrence and abundance. M. struthiopteris has high WA optima for summer temperature, pH, Ca, Mg, K, Na, cation exchange capacity (CEC), and base saturation, and a low optima for humidity and winter temperature. Of these, summer temperature (16.0 °C), Ca (63.1 mg 100 g dry soil-1), Mg (41.0 mg 100 g dry soil-1), K (23.6 mg 100 g dry soil-1), Na (5.0 mg 100 g dry soil-1), CEC (60.7 mEq 100 g dry soil-1), and base saturation (56.3%) have significant Gaussian logit responses, as do aspect (150.2°) and loss-on-ignition (9.4%). These results suggest that the occurrence and relative abundance of M. struthiopteris are well predicted by high soil base cations, a generally southern aspect, low organic content in the soil, and high July temperatures. more...

The pattern of growth and phenology of Thelypteris limbosperma, Athyrium distentifolium, and Matteuccia struthiopteris fronds has been investigated, with particular emphasis on height increments of the sporophytes and the development of fertile fronds. In order to study both interspecific and intraspecific differences, fern stands along altitudinal gradients have been monitored. To investigate the initiation of fertility, fronds representing different developmental stages have been sampled. Climatic data have been collected with a data-logger during the study periods. The ferns show significant differences in growth pattern and phenology. Matteuccia struthiopteris has a growth curve that is best described as monomolecular, characterised by high growth rates during the early developmental stage, while the development of Thelypteris limbosperma and Athyrium distentifolium follow a logistic growth curve. The species need different periods of time to develop their fronds. The main frond elongation does not start before soil temperature has reached 7 C. After that, the growth is mainly controlled by air temperature. Within the interval when mean maximum temperatures are 8–20 C, all three ferns showed increased growth rates with increasing air temperatures, but the increase was greatest in M. struthiopteris. At higher temperatures, the growth rate of M. struthiopteris and T. limbosperma decreased. Athyrium distentifolium is characterised by producing sori at an early developmental stage. Fertile Matteuccia strurhiopteris fronds are developed at a much later developmental stage. Thelypteris limbosperma needs a longer period of time to produce mature fronds than the other species. The investigation indicates that plant growth and development are determined by both internal and external factors. It is concluded that growth rate, phenology, and the ability of ferns to produce mature fronds reveal close similarities with their response to environmental variables, and hence with their broad-scale geographical distributional patterns. more...

Concentrations of the elements Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn were measured in the fronds of the fern Athyrium distentifolium from the Sudety and Tatra mountains (Poland). The A. distentifolium sites in the Sudety mountains which were influenced by long-range metal transport from the former Black Triangle were distinguished by the principal component and classification analysis (PCCA). These sites were situated on the west side slopes of one of the ranges in the Sudety mountains (within a 150-km radius of the heart of the former Black Triangle) at an altitude of 700 m asl, and exposed to prevailing winds. This most affected area had significantly higher foliar concentrations of Cu, Cr and Ni which are typical for long-range transported airborne elements occurring in coal fly ash emitted by lignite combustion industry. more...

The method was tested on the fern Athyrium distentifolium, in which we measured concentrations of the elements Ca, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Na, Ni, Pb, and Zn. Plants were sampled from sites with different types of bedrock in the Tatra National Park in Poland. MBA was used to investigate whether specimens of Athyrium distentifolium that contain elevated levels of certain elements occur more frequently on a specific type of bedrock and to identify relationships between the type of bedrock and the concentrations of the elements in this fern. The results were compared with those of the commonly used principal component and classification analysis (PCCA) technique. MBA and PCCA ordination both yielded distinct groups of ferns growing on different types of bedrock. Although the results of MBA and PCCA were similar, MBA has the advantage of being independent of the size of the data set. In addition, MBA revealed not only dominant elements but, in the case of limestone bedrock, also showed very low concentrations of Cd, Fe, Mn, and Pb in ferns growing on this type of parent material. MBA, thus, appeared to be a promising data mining method to reveal chemical relations in the environment as well as the accumulation of chemical elements in bioindicators. This paper presents results of a study on the synecology of Athyrium distentifolium. The investigation is based on phytosociological and ecological analyses of stands dominated by A. distentifolium within its whole distributional area in Western Norway. The distribution and floristic composition of the stands are related to different environmental parameters such as climate, soil and topography. The data are analysed by numerical methods, of which two-way indicator species analysis (TWINSPAN), canonical correspondence analysis (CCA), and simple discriminant functions (DISCRIM) are the most useful. Based on a TWINSPAN classification of the 211 investigated stands, 9 different groups (types) are distinguished. These belong mainly to three phytosociological alliances: Cryptogrammo-Athyrion alpestris (1 group), Lactucion alpinae (5 groups) and Vaccinio-Piceion (3 groups). The quadrats are in most cases very poor in species, even in edaphically rich areas. Soil richness in the stands is very variable. A. distentifolium may be dominant in edaphically rich areas and it is not a calciphobe species in W. Norway. Most stands show no signs of human influence. To examine the performance and information content of different marker systems, comparative assessment of population genetic diversity was undertaken in nine populations of Athyrium distentifolium using nine genomic and 10 expressed sequence tag (EST) microsatellite (SSR) loci, and 265 amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) loci from two primer combinations. In range-wide comparisons (European vs. North American populations), the EST-SSR loci showed more reliable amplification and produced more easily scorable bands than genomic simple sequence repeats (SSRs). Genomic SSRs showed significantly higher levels of allelic diversity than EST-SSRs, but there was a significant correlation in the rank order of population diversities revealed by both marker types. When AFLPs, genomic SSRs, and EST-SSRs are considered, comparisons of different population diversity metrics/markers revealed a mixture of significant and nonsignificant rank-order correlations. However, no hard incongruence was detected (in no pairwise comparison of populations did different marker systems or metrics detect opposingly significant different amounts of variation). Comparable population pairwise estimates of F(ST) were obtained for all marker types, but whilst absolute values for genomic and EST-SSRs were very similar (F(ST) = 0.355 and 0.342, respectively), differentiation was consistently higher for AFLPs in pairwise and global comparisons (global AFLP F(ST) = 0.496). The two AFLP primer combinations outperformed 18 SSR loci in assignment tests and discriminatory power in phenetic cluster analyses. This paper presents the results of demographic studies in populations of six forest fern species — Athyrium distentifolium Tausch ex Opiz, A. filix -femina (L.) Roth, Dryopteris carthusiana (Vill.) H.P. Fuchs, D. expansa (Presl) Fras.-Jenk. and Jermy,D. filix-mas (L.) Schott, and Matteuccia struthiopteris (L.) Tod. — in ecosystems of South Siberia. In natural conditions fern populations include gametophyte and sporophyte settlements isolated from each other due to the occupation of different ecological microniches in coenoses. Gametophyte settlements demonstrate complex sex composition and develop in ‘safe sites’ in coenoses. Separate gametophytes or gametophyte settlements of Dryopteris carthusiana, D. expansa,and D. filix-mas develop on rotten litter (trunks and branches) whereas gametophytes of Athyrium distentifolium, A. filix -femina develop on naked soil. Sporophyte settlements are formed by individuals of different ages. Six tall herb and fern vegetation types in Roldal have been investigated. They are referred to the alliances Lactucion alpinae and Alno–Ulmion. Lactucion alpinae is divided into two suballiances, one oligotrophic to mesotrophic (Dryoptero–Calamagrostenion purpureae) to which are referred Athyrium distentifolium– Salix scrub, and Athyrium distentifolium meadow, and one eutrophic (Lactucenion alpinae) to which belongs Geranium sylvatkum meadow and Lactuca alpina meadow. Alnus incana forest, herb/fern and Matteuccia struthiopteris types belong to Alno–Ulmion. Lactucion alpinae is considered subalpine, whilst Alno Uimion is prealpine. Decaying logs and stumps provide an important seedling substrate in natural subalpine forests. However, only stumps present such a role in managed forests. The aim of this study was to assess the differences in the process of seedling colonization between logs and stumps. The study was carried out in the Czech Republic, in two old-growth subalpine spruce forests located in the Bohemian Forest and Ash Mts., dominated by Athyrium distentifolium Opiz and Vaccinium myrtillus L. undergrowth, respectively. Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) regeneration growing on logs, stumps and non-coarse woody debris (CWD) microsites was surveyed. Regeneration (height 0–2.0 m) densities exceeded 5000 individuals per ha on both sites. The average density of P. abies regeneration per square meter of substrate was 0.3-5.7-19.6 and 0.5-3.8-11.0 on non-CWD microsites, logs and stumps, located in A. distentifolium and V. myrtillus undergrowth, respectively. Stumps and non-CWD microsites dominated by V. myrtillus, supported a higher proportion of taller seedlings per plot compared to the small seedlings growing on logs and non-CWD dominated by A. distentifolium ground-cover. The disproportion in regeneration densities between the stumps and the original logs decreased with increasing stages of decay. The tallest regeneration growing on stumps (root-soil plates) was significantly older than that growing on the logs (stems). Based on these two latter findings, the stumps appeared to provide suitable seedling substrates several years earlier than the logs did. Therefore, we conclude that the stumps play a more important role (relative to their covered area, 21–28 m ha) in terms of suitable microsites for regeneration, than the logs do.2–1 more...

This study was focused on identifying the impact of a ski piste on snow conditions, soil temperature, as well as phenological development and growth of Athyrium distentifolium, and examining differences in species composition between the ski piste and the natural environment. Longer snow-cover period and deeper snow were observed on the ski piste than in the natural surroundings. Lower soil temperature was found on the ski piste during the peak winter period and at the beginning of the growing period. Different environmental conditions on the ski piste caused a delay and shortening of the phenological development of A. distentifolium in the late spring. Individuals of that plant caught up the initial delay in phenological development within 36 days after the beginning of measurement.
