Objective: The aim of our study is to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of basilar artery stenosis cases in which we applied endovascular treatment due to recurrent stroke under optimal medical management. Methods: Patients with severe basilar artery stenosis (70-99%) due to atherosclerosis, who had transient ischemic attack or ischemic stroke despite optimal medical management, and who underwent endovascular treatment were retrospectively examined. The primary outcomes were ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke within 90 days after stent deployment and death related to the endovascular procedure during hospitalization. Secondary outcomes were successful revascularization (residual stenosis <30%) and procedure-related complications. Results: The median age of the 19 patients included in the study was 65 years (IQR, 53-68.5), and 74% were male. The most common area of stenosis was the proximal third of the basilar artery (63%), followed by the middle third (37%). According to the Mori classification, the most common lesion type was MORI A (53%), followed by MORI B (42%). While the stenosis rate before endovascular treatment was 85% (IQR, 80-90%), the median residual stenosis rate after successful stenting was 16% (IQR, 11-20). Treatment was successful in 18 of 19 patients (95%), and only 1 patient died due to basilar artery perforation during the procedure. The mortality rate was 5% (1/19). Asymptomatic stent restenosis was observed in one patient who underwent balloon angioplasty. During this period, no recurrent ischemic stroke was observed in any patient. The 3rd month mRS score was 1 (IQR, 0-1.5). Conclusion: The endovascular treatment of basilar artery stenosis appears to be safe and effective in experienced centers, despite the potential risk of perioperative complications. Purpose: Coronary artery disease is defined as complications that develop in proportion to the prevalence of ischemia due to occlusion of the coronary arteries and the resulting cell death. The development of atherosclerosis is significantly influenced by endothelial cell dysfunction. Kruppel-like factor 2, a transcription factor, has been shown to regulate critical biological events in endothelial biology, such as vascular tone, migration, proliferation, vasoreactivity, and angiogenesis. In our study, it was aimed to clarify the relationship between coronary artery disease and Kruppel-like factor 2 protein levels and C1239A polymorphisms. Materials and Methods: 191 individuals who underwent coronary angiography at Mersin University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Cardiology, Health, Research and Application Center were included in the study. Measurements of serum fasting blood glucose, HDL cholesterol, total cholesterol, and triglyceride levels were performed on the AU5800 (Beckman Coulter, United States) autoanalyzer. Serum LDL levels were calculated using the Friedwald equation. Serum Kruppel-like factor 2 protein levels were measured by sandwich enzyme-linked immunoassay method on the Multiskan GO (Thermo Scientific, Finland) device. Kruppel-like factor 2 C1239A variations were detected on the Applied Biosystem VIIA™ 7 Real-Time PCR (Life Technologies Co., United States) device by TaqMan® single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) genotyping method. Results: Men had a 3.8-fold higher risk of CAD than women. (Odd's ratio 3.83, 95% Confidence interval 1.98-7.39; p<0.001). Kruppel-Like Factor 2 protein levels were not significantly different amongst the groups. Kruppellike factor 2 C1239A polymorphisms were not associated with coronary artery disease. Conclusion: More comprehensive studies with larger sample groups including other gene regions and metaanalysis studies are needed to determine the relationship between Kruppel-like factor 2 gene polymorphisms and coronary artery disease. Objective: Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is the most common chronic rheumatic disease in childhood. Cardiovascular morbidity and mortality are becoming important health problems for children with inflammatory rheumatic diseases. The aim of this study was to evaluate carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) in children with JIA and to examine its association with JIA subtype, markers of inflammation, and early atherosclerosis. Material and Methods: We included 112 (50 boys and 62 girls) patients who have been followed by a diagnosis of JIA for at least 6 months and 54 healthy control subjects (32 girls and 22 males) who were matched with the patients age and gender. All children underwent a carotid artery. Inflammation markers were evaluated in the patient group. Cumulative drug doses, total disease duration (TDD), active disease duration (ADD) were calculated. All CIMT values were compared in patients, subgroups, and control groups, and their relationship with inflammation markers was investigated. Results: CIMT values in found that children with JIA were significantly higher than in healthy children. There was no difference between the disease subgroups in terms of CIMT. No relationship was found between CIMT measurements and atherosclerosis risk factors, drugs, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, white blood cell and C-reactive protein. A negative correlation was found between mean platelet volume (MPV) and right CIMT. A statistically significant positive correlation was detected between the right CIMT and TDD (r=0.221, p=0.022), and ADD (r=0.248, p=0.010). Conclusion: The study showed that the patients with JIA had more risks than healthy controls for cardiovascular disease (CVD) regardless of subgroup. We concluded early and aggressive therapies may be protective for CVD. Negative correlation was found between MPV and CIMT that is consistent with recently published literature, but there is need for further studies with a larger patient population. Aim: Inflammation has an important role in the development of atherosclerosis. The risk of atherosclerosis and its complications is higher for patients with diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis in whom inflammatory activity is high than for healthy individuals. However, several studies have shown conflicting results in patients with scleroderma. In this study, carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) was compared in patients with scleroderma and a control group. Methods: Thirty patients diagnosed with scleroderma (mean age 51.3 ± 11.8 years) and 30 healthy volunteers were included in the study. The groups were similar regarding age, gender, and risk factors for atherosclerosis. Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the diagnostic value of ischemia modified albumin (IMA) in early non-ST elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) patients diagnosed with high-sensitive cardiac troponin (hs-cTn)assays. Materials and Methods: In the first three hours of symptom onset, one hundred sixty-two patients without cardiovascular disease history admitted to our hospital with NSTEMI were enrolled between March 2018 and August 2019. The patients' IMA levels were compared with IMA levels of randomly selected, age and the sex-matched control group comprised of 61 subjects with normal coronary angiography results. Results: IMA levels of NSTEMI patients were higher than the control group. In receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis, a value equal or greater than 0.3855 ABSU has an 82% sensitivity and a 99.4% specificity for diagnosing NSTEMI (AUC: 0.962, 95% CI: 0.937 – 0.986,). In addition, ROC curve analysis revealed moderate predictive power for distinguishing three-vessel disease (cut-off value: 0.4290 ABSU, sensitivity 78.4% and specificity 56.3%, AUC: 0.696, 95% CI: 0.616 – 0.776,). IMA levels were positively correlated with Gensini scores of the patient group. Conclusion: Ischemia-modified albumin, when used alone, was very useful in distinguishing NSTEMI from non-ischemic controls. Besides, IMA levels were positively correlated with CAD severity.

Objective: The aim of the study is to evaluate the association between serum uric acid (SUA) and 25-OH Vitamin D (25-OH-VIT D). There is no data about the association between hyperuricemia and 25-OH-VIT D deficiency for North Cyprus. Material and Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed on 356 adults aged between 18-75 years in the North Cyprus. Patients socio-demographic information, clinical and biochemical characteristics, eating habits, and lifestyle choices were recorded. Biochemical parameters were evaluated in all patients. Data were analysed by Chi-square test, Student’s t test, and ANOVA, as appropriate. Also, the Gamma correlation coefficient was calculated for the relationship between 25-OH Vitamin D groups and the other variables. Results: The prevalence of 25-OH-VIT D deficiency was 55.9% among the patients (12.86±4.63 ng/mL), the prevalence of 25-OH-VIT D insufficiency (23.44±2.38 ng/mL) was 27%, and 25-OH-VIT D levels were sufficient in only 17.1% of the patients (36.01±5.83 ng/mL). The ANOVA results indicated statistically significant differences SUA for both male and female patients between the 25-OH-VIT D groups. According to the Gamma correlation coefficient values, 25-OH Vitamin D levels were significantly negatively correlated with SUA. Conclusion: In our study indicated a high prevalence of 25-OHVIT D deficiency and insufficiency in North Cyprus adults and we have found a significant association between SUA levels and 25-OH-VIT D. As a result, both vitamin D supplementation and uric acid-lowering therapies are important in protecting patients against future atherosclerotic diseases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: We aimed to evaluate carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT) and epicardial adipose tissue thickness (EATT) concurrently as early atherosclerotic markers in pediatric patients with Celiac disease. Materials and Methods: Patients with Celiac disease (n=54) and healthy peers (n=54) aged 5-18 years were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. Patients who followed gluten free diet at least the past 12 months were included. Anthropometric and biochemical measurements were performed. cIMT and EATT were measured by echocardiography and compared between the patient and control groups. Results: Body mass index (17.4±3.0 vs. 18.4±3.1 kg/m2), blood pressure (systolic: 100 (85-120) vs. 100 (80-100) mmHg; diastolic: 60 (40-90) vs. 70 (40-90) mmHg), and lipid profile (total cholesterol: 144.6±30.2 vs. 150.8±22.6 mg/dL; triglycerides: 71.5 (27-178) vs. 92.5 (34-203) mg/dL) were not different between the patient and control groups, while there were significant differences in cIMT and EATT. The patient group had higher cIMT (0.50±0.07 vs. 0.45±0.04 mm) and EATT (5.68±0.90 vs. 4.22±0.76 mm) than the control group. The risk of vitamin D insufficiency was 2.68 times higher in the patient group (95% CI=1.19-6.03). Conclusions: Children with Celiac disease had higher cIMT and EATT than healthy peers. cIMT and/or EATT measurements by echocardiography may present as a reliable and easy method to investigate subclinical atherosclerosis in children with Celiac disease. Introduction: Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is an autosomal dominant inherited disease associated with high lowdensity lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels that can lead to early cardiovascular disease. Apart from its atherosclerotic effect, it can cause cardiac dysfunction by various mechanisms. QT dispersion is a measure reflecting the heterogeneity of ventricular repolarization that has been investigated as an early or important marker in various pathologies. The aim of this study is to investigate QT dispersion and its possible clinical effects in patients with familial hypercholesterolemia. Method: Our study was conducted in patients who applied to the cardiology and endocrinology outpatient clinics of Mersin City Training and Research Hospital between 30.10.2018 and 01.11.2019. Over the age of 18 who were diagnosed with familial hypercholesterolemia included to the study. Patients with an atherosclerotic risk factor and established disease were excluded from the study. The ECGs of the patients were transferred to digital media and evaluated by two different cardiologists and their averages were recorded. These values were compared with the control group. The results were recorded in the SPSS 20.0 package program and statistical analysis was performed. Results: A total of 200 patients were included in the study. 120 (60%) of them are women, the mean age is 32.28±7.90 years. LDL, total cholesterol and triglyceride values of the group with hypercholesterolemia were significantly higher than the other group (p<0.001, p<0.001, p=0.003). When the ECG parameters of the patients were compared, QT dispersion and QTc dispersion values were found to be significantly higher in the familial hypercholesterolemia group (p=0.001, p<0.001, p<0.001). In the logistic regression analysis, it was observed that QT dispersion (OR:0.100, 95%Cl:0.018-0.556, p=0.009) and QTc dispersion (OR:102.746, 95%Cl:4.441-2377.259, p=0.004) were statistically significant independent variables. Conclusion: QTd and QTcd measurements increased statistically significantly in familial hypercholesterolemia patients compared to the control group. Objective: Childhood and adolescent obesity increases the risk of obesity in adulthood, which creates a risk of atherosclerotic disease. Carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) measurements are new markers used for the detection of early, preclinical atherosclerosis. Recent studies show that CIMT is increased in children with familial hypercholesterolemia and severe obesity. Aim: This study aims to investigate the relationship between blood lipid profile and CIMT in adolescents with obesity and to discuss the predictive value of preclinical atherosclerosis. Methods: The study involves 108 obese patients between the ages of 10-20 years with the Body Mass Index (BMI) above 95. percentile and as the control group 101 healthy children with a BMI under 85. percentile were included in the study, with respect to age and gender. Blood samples were taken from the obese patient group to determine blood glucose, lipid profile (triglyceride, LDL, VLDL, HDL, total cholesterol) after at least 12 hours of fasting. Carotid Intima Media Thickness of the patients included in the study was measured with echocardiography. Results: A significant relationship was found between CIMT and BMI statistically. When the groups were compared in terms of blood lipid profile, triglyceride, LDL and total cholesterol levels were found to be higher in the obese group and HDL levels were found to be lower. There was no statistically significant relationship between blood lipid profile and CIMT in the obese group. Conclusion: In our study, it was found that CIMT increased in adolescent obese compared to the normal population. However, no relationship was found between lipid profile and CIMT. For this reason, we recommend CIMT measurement even if the blood lipid profile is normal in order to detect atherosclerosis early and take precautions for it in obese adolescents. Objective: To investigate markers of carotid atherosclerosis and oxidized low density lipoprotein (OxLDL) levels in patients with Familial Mediterranean Fever (FMF) who have no risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Method: It was included 44 patients (25 F/19 M; mean age: 33.5±7.5) with FMF in attack free period and gender and age matched 44 healthy subjects (25 F/19 M; mean age: 33.4±7.0). The patients with clinical coronary artery disease, chronic renal disease, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, history of myocardial infarction, angina pectoris, cerebrovascular disease, dyslipidemia, metabolic syndrome, active infection, those in postmenopausal period, and those using anti-lipid drugs were excluded. Carotid artery intima-media thickness (C-IMT) was measured and investigated atherosclerotic plaques in the carotids by using doppler ultrasound. Serum lipid and OxLDL levels were also assessed. Data were analyzed with the SPSS program and p<0.05 were accepted as significant. Result: Mean disease duration of the FMF patients was 20±9 years. The mean C-IMT did not differ between the patient and control groups (0.52±0.10 mm, 0.53±0.06 mm, respectively, p=0.709). None of the patients or controls had atherosclerotic plaques. Total and LDL cholesterol levels were significantly lower in the patient group compared to the controls (total cholesterol: 157.07±34.18, 181.05±36.79, respectively, p=0.002; LDL cholesterol: 100.48±30.13, 126.25±34.05, respectively, p=0.001). However, we found that OxLDL levels were significantly higher in FMF patients compared to control group (337.48±438.56 ng/dl, 156.19±383.24 ng/dl, p=0.044). No correlation was found between C-IMT and OxLDL levels in both patients (p=0.324) and controls (p=0.246). Conclusion: Our study provides further evidence for no increased atherosclerosis in FMF. As previously shown, FMF patients have lower cholesterol levels compared to healthy controls. On the other hand, increased OxLDL levels could be associated with increased subclinical inflammation. Objective: Thrombocytes and mean platelet volume (MPV) are related to atherosclerosis. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the relationship between MPV and subclavian arterial stenosis (SAS). Materials and Methods: Patients who were diagnosed with SAS by an angiography performed in the catheter laboratory between September 2010 and September 2015 were included in this study. A control group with similar clinical and demographic characteristics as the patients with SAS in angiographic terms was formed. The MPV and other hemogram values for SAS patients (35 patients) and the patients in the control group (38 patients) were determined retrospectively from the registry system and then compared. Results: The two groups were similar to each other in terms of demographic and clinical characteristics. When the hemogram parameters were compared between the groups, the MPV was detected as being significantly higher in patients with SAS (8.07 ± 1.41 vs 7.19 ± 0.52; p = 0.001). Conclusion: In conclusion, this study was the first to find a higher MPV in patients with SAS. Considering both the effect of platelets on atherosclerosis and their close association with other risk factors, MPV level may be an important factor in pathogenesis of SAS.

OBJECTIVES: Autonomic dysfunction is detected in patients with coronary artery disease and is indicative of poor prognosis. The aim of this study was to compare baseline T peak-end interval (Tp-e) and heart rate recovery index [HRR-I] values in patients with stable coronary artery disease who had a left ventricular ejection fraction [EF] > 50 % and < 50 %. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In Group 1, there were 107 patients with exertional chest pain for more than 2 months and class 1-2 angina with EF < 50 %, had 3-vessel diseases on coronary angiography. In Group 2, there were 76 patients with EF > 50 %, had 3-vessel diseases on coronary angiography. Baseline Tp-e and heart rate values of both groups were measured and transthoracic echocardiograms were performed at the beginning. Both Group 1 and 2 were then subjected to exercise testing according to the Bruce protocol and heart rates were measured at the peak and 1st, 2nd, and 3rd minutes of exercise. Objective: Monocyte to high-density lipoprotein ratio (MHR) is a biomarker of inflammatory response. In this study, we investigated the relationship between MHR and mortality in patients with chronic coronary artery occlusion (CTO). Method: Retrospective observational study including 493 patients over a follow up period of 73 months. Blood samples were taken before cardiac catheterization for coronary angiography. Results: Median follow-up was 48 months(26-73) . Patients were seperated into two groups: (I) MHR <17.68 (n=278, 95 females) and (II) MHR ≥17.68 (n=215, 45 females). Mortality was considerably higher in MHR II than in MHR I (n=70 vs. n=43; p<0,001). MHR was an independent predictor of mortality (OR: 1.089, 95% [CI]: 1.055-1.124, p<0,001). Lower survival rates were found in MHR II on Kaplan-Meier analyses when compared to that of MHR I (75.223±2.670 vs. 89.220±2.102, p<0,001). Conclusions: As a simple, easy applicable and universal marker, MHR may be a parameter that predicts mortality risk and survival time in CTO patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: Peripheral arterial disease (PAH) is a chronic, progressive disease characterized by arterial stenosis or occlusion. Atherosclerosis is the most common cause of PAH (>90%). Carbamylation is one of the post-translational modification mechanisms of proteins and has been identified as a new risk factor for atherosclerosis. The most common carbamylation product known is homocitrulline. Our aim in this study was to contribute to the elucidation of the role of homocitrulline in the diagnosis of PAH. Methods: 70 patients with PAH and 65 individuals without PAH were included in the study. Serum homocitrulline and lysine levels were measured by AB Sciex API 3200 (Applied Biosystems/MDS Sciex) liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/ MS) device. Various hematological and biochemical parameters of the patients were measured in Beckman Coulter LH 780 and Beckman Coulter AU 5800 (Beckman Coulter, Brea, USA) autoanalyzers, and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels were measured in IMMAGE 800 (Beckman Coulter, Brea, USA) device, respectively. Results: Serum homocitrulline concentrations of patients with PAH were statistically significantly higher than the control group (p<0.001). Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) analysis showed that the optimal serum homocitrulline cut-off value was 165.1 µmol / mol lysine (p<0.001) (sensitivity, 71.4% and specificity, 86.7%) for PAH. The area under curve (AUC) value was 0.873 (95% confidence interval: 0.804- 0.925). There was a positive correlation between serum homocitrulline and urea, CRP, the neutrophillymphocyte ratio (NLR) and the platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) levels. Conclusion: Our findings show that homocitrulline levels are significantly elevated in patients with PAH, and homocitrulline may be a useful marker in the early diagnosis of PAH. Objective: Although the relationship between ABO blood phenotype and athcrosclerosis has been investigated: to our knowledge, new atlicrogenic indices, including (he atherogenic index (AD, cithcrogcnic plasma index (AIP), lipoprotcin combined index (LCD, and Castelli's pish indices, have not been extensively discussed. The clint of this sludy is to investigate the efects of new athcrogenic indices in cletermining atherogenic risk in men who appear healthy according to ABO blood phenotypes. Material and Method: The study included 188 appairmly healthy male medical staff (218 years); the participants were grouped according to their ABO blood group phenotype (A, B, AB, O or non-O blood). Laboratory tests included assessment of ABO blood types and measurements of the levels of total cholesterol (TO, high- and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-6 and LDL-O, and triglycerides (TGs). Also novel atherogenic risk indices were calculated. Results: Although smoking was significantly higher in the AB blood phcnotype group among the study groups, there was no signi.ficant difference in terms of TC, TGs, LDL-C and HDL-C levels. Aim: Inflammation has an important role in the development of atherosclerosis. The risk of atherosclerosis and its complications is higher for patients with diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis in whom inflammatory activity is higher than for healthy individuals. However, several studies have shown conflicting results in patients with scleroderma. In this study, carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) was compared in patients with scleroderma and a control group. Methods: Thirty patients diagnosed with scleroderma (mean age 51.3 ± 11.8 years) and 30 healthy volunteers were included in the study. The groups were similar regarding age, gender, and risk factors for atherosclerosis. Results: There was no statistically significant difference between the groups in terms of age, gender, lipid level, hypertension, and diabetes mellitus prevalence (p>0.05). The mean CIMT (scleroderma group: 0.070±0.011, control group: 0.048±0.008, p<0.001) and the maximum CIMT (scleroderma group: 0.076±0.013, control group: 0.054±0.009, p<0.001) were statistically significantly higher in the patients with scleroderma. There was a statistically significant correlation between the mean CIMT and hsCRP (r=0.48, p<0.001); and the mean CIMT and the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (r=0.50, p=0.007) in the scleroderma group. The maximum CIMT and the mean CIMT were significantly higher in patients with diffuse type scleroderma compared to the patients with localized scleroderma (p values 0.001 and 0.011, respectively). Conclusion: Our results show that CIMT is higher in patients with scleroderma compared to the control group, and this is associated with increased inflammatory activity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: The aim of our study was to investigate the presence of increased cardiovascular risk in epileptic children treated with carbamazepine. This study was designed to evaluate the relation of carbamazepine and atherosclerosis by investigating the effect of carbamazepine on antioxidant capacity, lipid profile, oxidized low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and carotid artery intima-media thickness (C-IMT). Methods: Twenty-one children aged between 2 and 16 years with epilepsy who were treated with carbamazepine were included in the study. Triglyceride, total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein, LDL, lipid hydroperoxide, paraoxonase, arylesterase levels, and C-IMT were measured in all patients before the treatment, at the 3rd and 6th months of the treatment. Results: Thirteen (61.9%) of the patients were male, and 8 (38.1%) were female. The mean age of the patients was 111.48±44.81 months. There was a significant increase in total cholesterol, arylesterase, and paraoxonase levels at the 6th months of the treatment compared with pre-treatment levels. No significant changes were observed in C-IMT values. Conclusion: Our study is the first study in the literature in which the relation between arylesterase and paraoxonase levels and CIMT in pediatric patients before and after carbamazepine treatment was prospectively investigated. The exact mechanism of carbamazepine on atherosclerosis is not clearly understood. These results demonstrate that these patients could be at increased risk of the development of cardiovascular complications. In light of these findings, future studies in epileptic children should be to plan antioxidant capacity, cholesterol level, and measuring C-IMT with ultrasonography periodically in long term. Objective: Tissue Inhibitor of Metalloproteinase-3 human (TIMP3) is one of tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMPs), which binds to the components of the extracellular matrix, and has crucial roles in atherosclerogenesis and adipose tissue differentiation. In this study, it was aimed to determine the effects of TIMP3 gene expression levels on severity of atherosclerosis in different tissues. Material and Methods: The first group of the study (evaluated for coronary artery disease) were cases classified as high and low plaque scores according to the degree and location of atherosclerotic lesions. In the second group (post-mortem cases) were male cadavers who died due to coronary heart disease (CHD, n=26) and non-cardiac trauma (T-nonP, n=4). The TIMP3 expression levels were examined in leukocyte and peri-coronary epicardial adipose tissues (EAT) samples (n=69 and n=34, respectively) of the first group and EAT and coronary artery samples (n=12 and n=30, respectively) of the second group using quantitative RT-PCR. In addition, the protein expressions of TIMP3 were analysed on artery sections by immunofluorestaining. Results: In the post-mortem study group, the TIMP3 expression levels were found to increase in no plaque segments of arteries of cases with CHD (CHD-nonP) compared to advanced atherosclerotic arteries (CHD-P) and normal arteries of T-nonP cases (p=0.01 and p=0.05, respectively). The TIMP3 expressions in EATs and leukocytes were not statistically significant between the study groups. In addition, TIMP3 protein was detected in normal arteries, peri-coronary EATs and mostly in macrophages- rich areas in advanced atherosclerotic arteries. Conclusion: Tissue Inhibitor of Metalloproteinase-3 human (TIMP3) expression levels increase in normal coronary arterial segments of cases with CHD, which depict a protective role of TIMP3 in development of atherosclerosis. Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the diagnostic value of ischemia modified albumin (IMA) in early non-ST elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) patients diagnosed with high-sensitive cardiac troponin (hs-cTn)assays. Materials and Methods: In the first three hours of symptom onset, one hundred sixty-two patients without cardiovascular disease history admitted to our hospital with NSTEMI were enrolled between March 2018 and August 2019. The patients' IMA levels were compared with IMA levels of randomly selected, age and the sex-matched control group comprised of 61 subjects with normal coronary angiography results. Results: IMA levels of NSTEMI patients were higher than the control group. In receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis, a value equal or greater than 0.3855 ABSU has an 82% sensitivity and a 99.4% specificity for diagnosing NSTEMI (AUC: 0.962, 95% CI: 0.937 – 0.986,). In addition, ROC curve analysis revealed moderate predictive power for distinguishing three-vessel disease (cut-off value: 0.4290 ABSU, sensitivity 78.4% and specificity 56.3%, AUC: 0.696, 95% CI: 0.616 – 0.776,). IMA levels were positively correlated with Gensini scores of the patient group. Conclusion: Ischemia-modified albumin, when used alone, was very useful in distinguishing NSTEMI from non-ischemic controls. Besides, IMA levels were positively correlated with CAD severity. Objective Hashimoto thyroiditis is an autoimmune thyroid disease. Atherosclerosis is a pathological condition characterized by local accumulation of substances such as lipids, carbohydrates, fibrous tissue and calcium in the subintima layer of arteries. In this study, we aimed to reveal the relationship between autoimmunity and atherosclerosis by measuring serum VEGF levels, flow-mediated dilation (FMD) and carotid intima-media thicknes (CIMT) in euthyroid patients with Hashimoto thyroiditis. Materials and Methods Forty patients diagnosed with Hashimoto thyroiditis in the Internal Medicine Clinic of Gaziantep University Medical Faculty and 40 healthy volunteers matched for age and gender were included in the study. VEGF levels were measured by ELISA method in serum samples. CIMT and FMD were evaluated with ultrasound guidance in the patient and control groups and it was determined whether there was a association with the present results. Results The demographic characteristics of the patient and control groups were similar. There was a significant difference between the patients and healthy control group in terms of FMD and CIMC measurements (p = 0.001; p = 0.033). It was also found that VEGF levels of patients were higher than those in the control group (p = 0.024). Conclusion All these results show autoimmunity may lead atherosclerosis even without thyroid hormone deficiency and also noninvasive FMD, CIMT measurements and VEGF levels may have predictive value in the early follow-up of Hashimoto patients. Tüm dünyada ve ülkemizde kardiyovasküler hastalıklardan kaynaklanan morbiditenin ve mortalitenin ciddi rakamlara ulaştığı bilinmektedir. Günümüzde, yaşam tarzı ve beslenme alışkanlıkları değişimi ile kardiyovasküler hastalıkların morbiditesi artmıştır. Diyet ile alınan bitkisel steroller/stanoller, bu olumsuz çevresel koşulları çeşitli mekanizmalar aracılığıyla değiştirebilir ve iyileştirebilir. Etki mekanizması ise enterohepatik döngü içindeki kolesterol ve lipid düzenleyici hedeflerin regülasyonudur. Bağırsak lümeninde eksojen (diyet) ve endojen kaynaklı kolesterol ile rekabet etmek, bağırsak kolesterolü emilimini azaltmak ve kolesterol sentezinde görevli genlerin ekspresyonunu değiştirmek gibi önemli etkileri vardır. Hepatik döngü içerisindeki etkinliği ile kardiyovasküler hastalıklar için risk faktörü olan total kolesterol, düşük yoğunluklu lipoprotein kolesterol ve trigliserit serum konsantrasyonlarını önemli ölçüde düşürmektedir. Bunun yanı sıra, aterosklerozun patogenezinde önemli rol oynayan plazma fibrinojen düzeylerini ve trombotik etkiye neden olan trombosit düzeylerini azaltarak aterosklerotik sürece etki etmektedir.

Purpose: Despite current hypolipidemic drugs, the search for a more effective hypolipidemic agent is ongoing. In this study, it was aimed to investigate the effect of Silibinin on hyperlipidemia in rats fed high cholesterol diet (HCD). Materials and Methods: Rats were made obese. Rats were given egg yolk for 60 days and then 50 mg/kg, 100 mg/kg Silibinin were applied i.p. for 7 days. Results: The first and last weights of the rats were significantly different. While total cholesterol (TC), LDL, TG and VLDL levels increased significantly in the groups fed with HCD, HDL level reduced compared to control group (CG). OxLDL and TAS were significantly different between groups. Conclusion: The effects of Silibinin on serum LDL, TC, VLDL, HDL, TG, OxLDL levels and to observe the antioxidant effect, TAS and TOS were investigated in experimental obese rat models. It was concluded that Silibinin plays an effective role in lowering TG and LDL levels, increasing HDL levels and decreasing hepatic lipid accumulation in HCD rats at 100 mg/kg dose. Aim: Atherosclerosis is a disease affecting the intimas of arteries. We aimed to investigate the presence of carotid atherosclerosis in patients with tinnitus as an etiologic factor of tinnitus. Methods: A total of 73 patients were included. The patients were divided into 4 groups according to the degree of sclerosis. Triglyceride, total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and low-density lipoproteins (LDL) levels were investigated. Tinnitus was questioned in patients. All patients have undergone a pure tone audiometry. Comperative statistical analysis was performed. Results: Tinnitus was seen in 79.5% of the patients and 20.5% of the patients had no tinnitus. Carotid stenosis of 1-49% degree was present in 16.4%, of 50-69% degree was present in 21.9%, and of 70% degree was present in 30.1% of the patients while 31.5% of the patients had no carotid stenosis. No significant association was present between carotid stenosis and the presence of tinnitus. HDL levels in patients with carotid stenosis of 1-49% degree were significantly higher than in those without stenosis. No significant difference was found between audiogram data and the level of carotid stenosis. Conclusion: There was no significant relationship between the degree of carotid stenosis and the presence of tinnitus. Mean HDL levels were higher in carotid artery stenosis of a 1-49% degree. Background: We aimed to compare the new anthropometric measurements and traditional anthropometric measurements as body mass index which are used to display visceral adipose distribution in patients with hypothyroidism. We also aimed to investigate the new anthropometric measurements and Carotid intima media thickness as predictors of cardiovascular risk. Materials and Methods: We include patients with hypothyroidism and healthy controls. The patients were divided into 3 groups as overt hypothyroidism, subclinical hypothyroidism and control groups. Demographic data, anthropometric measurements, laboratory findings and CIMT of the patients and control group were also evaluated. Results: The mean ages of the patients in groups were 37.46 ± 8.89, 35.03 ± 13.06 and 38.79 ± 10.46 years respectively (p=0.876). The average of waist circumference in overt hypothyroidism group was statistically higher than control (p<0.01). The averages of waist circumference/height circumference in the hypothyroidism groups were statistically higher than the control. There was a strong correlation according to body adiposity index, abdominal volume index, and body roundness index as new anthropometric measurements and body mass index, waist circumference, hip circumference and waist/height ratio (r>0.750 p<0.001 for all values). The mean value of carotid intima media thickness of the overt hypothyroidism group was significantly higher (p<0.01). Conclusions: We found strong correlations between new anthropometric and traditional anthropometric measurements in patient with hypothyroidism. Cardiometabolic risk has increased in patients with hypothyroidism, and routine use of new anthropometric measurements displaying body fat distribution and central obesity will be useful for early detection and treatment of cardiovascular complications.
