Two-dimensional (2D) 1T-VSe$_2$ has prompted significant interest due to the discrepancies regarding alleged ferromagnetism (FM) at room temperature, charge density wave (CDW) states and the interplay between the two. We employed a combined Diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) and density functional theory (DFT) approach to accurately investigate the magnetic properties and response of strain of monolayer 1T-VSe$_2$. Our calculations show the delicate competition between various phases, revealing critical insights into the relationship between their energetic and structural properties. We went on to perform Classical Monte Carlo simulations informed by our DMC and DFT results, and found the magnetic transition temperature ($T_c$) of the undistorted (non-CDW) FM phase to be 228 K and the distorted (CDW) phase to be 68 K. Additionally, we studied the response of biaxial strain on the energetic stability and magnetic properties of various phases of 2D 1T-VSe$_2$ and found that small amounts of strain can enhance the $T_c$, suggesting a promising route for engineering and enhancing magnetic behavior. Finally, we synthesized 1T-VSe$_2$ and performed Raman spectroscopy measurements, which were in close agreement with our calculated results. Our work emphasizes the role of highly accurate DMC methods in advancing the understanding of monolayer 1T-VSe$_2$ and provides a robust framework for future studies of 2D magnetic materials.

The frequency-dependent optical spectrum is pivotal for a broad range of applications, from material characterization to optoelectronics and energy harvesting. Data-driven surrogate models, trained on density functional theory (DFT) data, have effectively alleviated the scalability limitations of DFT while preserving its chemical accuracy, expediting material discovery. However, prevailing machine learning (ML) efforts often focus on scalar properties such as the band gap, overlooking the complexities of optical spectra. In this work, we employ deep graph neural networks (GNNs) to predict the frequency-dependent complex-valued dielectric function across the infrared, visible, and ultraviolet spectra directly from crystal structures. We explore multiple architectures for multi-output spectral representation of the dielectric function and utilize various multi-fidelity learning strategies, such as transfer learning and fidelity embedding, to address the challenges associated with the scarcity of high-fidelity DFT data. Additionally, we model key solar cell absorption efficiency metrics, demonstrating that learning these parameters is enhanced when integrated through a learning bias within the learning of the frequency-dependent absorption coefficient. This study demonstrates that leveraging multi-output and multi-fidelity ML techniques enables accurate predictions of optical spectra from crystal structures, providing a versatile tool for rapidly screening materials for optoelectronics, optical sensing, and solar energy applications across an extensive frequency spectrum.

The field of two-dimensional (2D) materials has grown dramatically in the last two decades. 2D materials can be utilized for a variety of next-generation optoelectronic, spintronic, clean energy, and quantum computation applications. These 2D structures, which are often exfoliated from layered van der Waals (vdW) materials, possess highly inhomogeneous electron densities and can possess short- and long-range electron correlations. The complexities of 2D materials make them challenging to study with standard mean-field electronic structure methods such as density functional theory (DFT), which relies on approximations for the unknown exchange-correlation functional. In order to overcome the limitations of DFT, highly accurate many-body electronic structure approaches such as Diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) can be utilized. In the past decade, DMC has been used to calculate accurate magnetic, electronic, excitonic, and topological properties in addition to accurately capturing interlayer interactions and cohesion and adsorption energetics of 2D materials. This approach has been applied to 2D systems of wide interest including graphene, phosphorene, MoS$_2$, CrI$_3$, VSe$_2$, GaSe, GeSe, borophene, and several others. In this review article, we highlight some successful recent applications of DMC to 2D systems for improved property predictions beyond standard DFT.

The chemical exfoliation of non-van der Waals (vdW) materials to ultrathin nanosheets remains a formidable challenge. This difficulty arises from the strong preference of these materials to engage in three-dimensional chemical bonding, resulting in uncontrolled atomic migration into the vdW gaps during cation deintercalation from the bulk structure, ultimately leading to unpredictable structural disorder. We propose a generic framework using neural network potentials (NNPs) to accurately model the widespread nonstoichiometric environments resulting from disordered atomic migrations during exfoliation of non-vdW materials. We apply our framework to investigate the crystal structures and phase transformations occurring during the exfoliation of non-vdW nonstoichiometric Cr$_{(1-x)}$S systems, a compelling material category with substantial potential for two-dimensional (2D) magnetic applications. The efficacy of the NNP outperforms the conventional cluster expansion, exhibiting superior accuracy and transferability to unexplored crystal structures and compositions. By employing the NNP in simulated annealing optimizations, we predict low-energy Cr$_{(1-x)}$S structures anticipated to result from experimental synthesis. A notable structural transition is discerned at the Cr$_{0.5}$S composition, with half of the Cr atoms preferentially migrating to vdW gaps. This aligns with experimental observations in the chemical exfoliation of 2D CrS$_2$, and emphasizes the vital role of excess Cr atoms beyond the Cr/S = $1/2$ composition ratio in stabilizing vdW gaps. Additionally, we utilize the NNP in a vacancy diffusion Monte Carlo simulation to illustrate the impact of lateral compressive strains in catalyzing the formation of vdW gaps within non-vdW CrS$_2$ slabs. This provides a direct pathway for more facile exfoliation of ultrathin nanosheets from non-vdW materials through strain engineering.

Previous works have controversially claimed near-room temperature ferromagnetism in two-dimensional (2D) VSe$_2$, with conflicting results throughout the literature. These discrepancies in magnetic properties between both phases (T and H phase) of 2D VSe$_2$ are most likely due to the structural parameters being coupled to the magnetic properties. Specifically, both phases have a close lattice match and similar total energies, which makes it difficult to determine which phase is being observed experimentally. In this study, we used a combination of density functional theory (DFT), highly accurate diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) and a surrogate Hessian line-search optimization technique to resolve the previously reported discrepancy in structural parameters and relative phase stability. With DMC accuracy, we determined the freestanding geometry of both phases and constructed a phase diagram. Our findings demonstrate the successes of the DMC method coupled with the surrogate Hessian structural optimization technique when applied to a 2D magnetic system.

Monolayer MnO$_2$ is one of the few predicted two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnets that has been experimentally synthesized and is commercially available. The Mermin-Wagner theorem states that magnetic order in a 2D material cannot persist unless magnetic anisotropy (MA) is present and perpendicular to the plane, which permits a finite critical temperature. Previous computational studies have predicted the magnetic ordering and Curie temperature of 2D MnO$_2$ with DFT+U (Density Funtional Theory + Hubbard U correction), with the results having a strong dependence on the Hubbard U parameter. Diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) is a correlated electronic structure method that has had demonstrated success for the electronic and magnetic properties of a variety of 2D and bulk systems since it has a weaker dependence on the starting Hubbard parameter and density functional. In this study, we used DMC and DFT+U to calculate the magnetic properties of monolayer MnO$_2$. We found that the ferromagnetic ordering is more favorable than antiferromagnetic and determined a statistical bound on the magnetic exchange parameter ($J$). In addition, we performed spin-orbit MA energy calculations using DFT+U and using our DMC and DFT+U parameters along with the analytical model of Torelli and Olsen, we estimated an upper bound of 28.8 K for the critical temperature of MnO$_2$. These QMC results intend to serve as an accurate theoretical benchmark, necessary for the realization and development of future 2D magnetic devices. These results also demonstrate the need for accurate methodologies to predict magnetic properties of correlated 2D materials.

The structural asymmetry of two-dimensional (2D) Janus transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) produces internal dipole moments that result in interesting electronic properties. These properties differ from the regular (symmetric) TMD structures that the Janus structures are derived from. In this study, we, at first, examine adsorption and diffusion of a single Li atom on regular MX2and Janus MXY (M = Mo, W; XY =S, Se, Te) TMD structures at various concentrations using first principles calculations within density functional theory. To gain more physical insight and prepare for future investigations of regular TMD and Janus materials, we applied a supervised machine learning (ML) model that uses cluster-wise linear regression to predict the adsorption energies of Li on top of 2D TMDs. We developed a universal representation with few descriptors that take into account the intrinsic dipole moment and the electronic structure of regular and Janus 2D layers, the side where the adsorption takes place and the concentration dependence of adatom doping. This representation can easily be generalized to be used for other impurities and 2D layer combinations, including alloys as well. At last, we focus on analyzing these structures as possible anodes in battery applications. We conducted Li diffusion, open-circuit-voltage and storage capacity simulations. We report that Lithium atoms are found to easily migrate between transition metal (Mo, W) top sites for each considered case, and in these respects many of the examined Janus materials are comparable or superior to graphene and to regular TMDs. The study of alloys using computational methods has been a difficult task due to the usually unknown stoichiometry and local atomic ordering of the different structures experimentally. In order to combat this, first-principles methods have been coupled with statistical methods such as the Cluster Expansion formalism in order to construct the energy hull diagram, which helps to determine if an alloyed structure can exist in nature. Traditionally, density functional theory (DFT) has been used in such workflows. In this work we propose to use chemically accurate many-body variational Monte Carlo (VMC) and diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) methods to construct the energy hull diagram of an alloy system, due to the fact that such methods have a weaker dependence on the starting wavefunction and density functional, scale similarly to DFT with the number of electrons, and have had demonstrated success for a variety of materials. To carry out these simulations in a high-throughput manner, we propose a method called Jastrow sharing, which involves recycling the optimized Jastrow parameters between alloys with different stoichiometries. We show that this eliminates the need for extra VMC Jastrow optimization calculations and results in a significant computational cost savings (on average 1/4 savings of total computational time). Since it is a novel post-transition metal chalcogenide alloy series that has been synthesized in its few-layer form, we used monolayer $GaS_xSe_{1-x}$ as a case study for our workflow. By extensively testing our Jastrow sharing procedure for monolayer $GaS_xSe_{1-x}$ and quantifying the cost savings, we demonstrate how a pathway towards chemically accurate high-throughput simulations of alloys can be achieved using many-body VMC and DMC methods.

Two-dimensional (2D) post-transition metal chalcogenides (PTMC) have attracted attention due to their suitable band gaps and lower exciton binding energies, making them more appropriate for electronic, optical and water-splitting devices than graphene and monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). Of the predicted 2D PTMCs, GaSe has been reliably synthesized and experimentally characterized. Despite this fact, quantities such as lattice parameters and band character vary significantly depending on which density functional theory (DFT) functional is used. Although many-body perturbation theory (GW approximation) has been used to correct the electronic structure and obtain the excited state properties of 2D GaSe, and solving the Bethe-Salpeter equation (BSE) has been used to find the optical gap, we find that the results depend strongly on the starting wavefunction. In attempt to correct these discrepancies, we employed the many-body Diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) method to calculate the ground and excited state properties of GaSe because DMC has a weaker dependence on the trial wavefunction. We benchmark these results with available experimental data, DFT [local-density approximation, Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE), strongly constrained and appropriately normed (SCAN) meta-GGA, and hybrid (HSE06) functionals] and GW-BSE (using PBE and SCAN wavefunctions) results. Our findings confirm monolayer GaSe is an indirect gap semiconductor (Gamma-M) with a quasiparticle electronic gap in close agreement with experiment and low exciton binding energy. We also benchmark the optimal lattice parameter, cohesive energy and ground state charge density with DMC and various DFT methods. We aim to present a terminal theoretical benchmark for pristine monolayer GaSe, which will aide in the further study of 2D PTMCs using DMC methods.

Neutral molecules with sufficiently large dipole moments can bind electrons in diffuse nonvalence orbitals with most of their charge density far from the nuclei, forming so-called dipole-bound anions. Because long-range correlation effects play an important role in the binding of an excess electron and overall binding energies are often only of the order of 10-100s of wave numbers, predictively modeling dipole-bound anions remains a challenge. Here, we demonstrate that quantum Monte Carlo methods can accurately characterize molecular dipole-bound anions with near threshold dipole moments. We also show that correlated sampling Auxiliary Field Quantum Monte Carlo is particularly well-suited for resolving the fine energy differences between the neutral and anionic species. These results shed light on the fundamental limitations of quantum Monte Carlo methods and pave the way toward using them for the study of weakly-bound species that are too large to model using traditional electron structure methods.

In this study, we investigate the electronic and magnetic properties of graphane nanoribbons. We find that zigzag and armchair graphane nanoribbons with H-passivated edges are nonmagnetic semiconductors. While bare armchair ribbons are also nonmagnetic, adjacent dangling bonds of bare zigzag ribbons have antiferromagnetic ordering at the same edge. Band gaps of the H-passivated zigzag and armchair nanoribbons exponentially depend on their width. Detailed analysis of adsorption of C, O, Si, Pt, Ti, V and Fe atoms on the graphane ribbon surface reveal that functionalization of graphane ribbons is possible via these adatoms. It is found that C, O, V and Pt atoms have tendency to replace H atoms of graphane. We showed that significant spin polarizations in graphane can be achieved through creation of domains of H-vacancies and CH-divacancies., Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. Rev. Each single hydrogen vacancy created at the surface of graphane gives rise to a local unpaired spin. For domains of hydrogen vacancies the situation is, however complex and depends on the size and geometry of domains, as well as whether the domains are single- or double-sided. In single-sided domains, hydrogen atoms at the other side are relocated to pair the spins of adjacent carbon atoms by forming pi-bonds. Owing to the different characters of exchange coupling in different ranges and interplay between unpaired spin and the binding geometry of hydrogen, vacancy domains can attain sizable net magnetic moments. Our results based on the first-principles calculations suggest that the size and ordering of magnetic moments of hydrogen vacancy domains with thin walls can be used for future data storage and spintronics applications., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures (published in Applied Physics Letters)
