Abstract: Proportional electroluminescence (EL) in noble gases is used in two-phase detectors for dark matter searches to record (in the gas phase) the ionization signal induced by particle scattering in the liquid phase. The "standard" EL mechanism is considered to be due to noble gas excimer emission in the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV). In addition, there are two alternative mechanisms, producing light in the visible and near infrared (NIR) ranges. The first is due to bremsstrahlung of electrons scattered on neutral atoms ("neutral bremsstrahlung", NBrS). The second, responsible for electron avalanche scintillation in the NIR at higher electric fields, is due to transitions between excited atomic states. In this work, we have for the first time demonstrated two alternative techniques of the optical readout of two-phase argon detectors, in the visible and NIR range, using a silicon photomultiplier matrix and electroluminescence due to either neutral bremsstrahlung or avalanche scintillation. The amplitude yield and position resolution were measured for these readout techniques, which allowed to assess the detection threshold for electron and nuclear recoils in two-phase argon detectors for dark matter searches. Abstract: Large liquid argon detectors offer one of the best avenues for the detection of galactic weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) via their scattering on atomic nuclei. The liquid argon target allows exquisite discrimination between nuclear and electron recoil signals via pulse-shape discrimination of the scintillation signals. Atmospheric argon (AAr), however, has a naturally occurring radioactive isotope, $^{39}$Ar, a $\beta$ emitter of cosmogenic origin. For large detectors, the atmospheric $^{39}$Ar activity poses pile-up concerns. The use of argon extracted from underground wells, deprived of $^{39}$Ar, is key to the physics potential of these experiments. The DarkSide-20k dark matter search experiment will operate a dual-phase time projection chamber with 50 tonnes of radio-pure underground argon (UAr), that was shown to be depleted of $^{39}$Ar with respect to AAr by a factor larger than 1400. Assessing the $^{39}$Ar content of the UAr during extraction is crucial for the success of DarkSide-20k, as well as for future experiments of the Global Argon Dark Matter Collaboration (GADMC). This will be carried out by the DArT in ArDM experiment, a small chamber made with extremely radio-pure materials that will be placed at the centre of the ArDM detector, in the Canfranc Underground Laboratory (LSC) in Spain. The ArDM LAr volume acts as an active veto for background radioactivity, mostly $\gamma$-rays from the ArDM detector materials and the surrounding rock. Abstract: Proportional electroluminescence (EL) in noble gases is used in two-phase detectors for dark matter searches to record (in the gas phase) the ionization signal induced by particle scattering in the liquid phase. The "standard" EL mechanism is considered to be due to noble gas excimer emission in the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV). In addition, there are two alternative mechanisms, producing light in the visible and near infrared (NIR) ranges. The first is due to bremsstrahlung of electrons scattered on neutral atoms ("neutral bremsstrahlung", NBrS). The second, responsible for electron avalanche scintillation in the NIR at higher electric fields, is due to transitions between excited atomic states. In this work, we have for the first time demonstrated two alternative techniques of the optical readout of two-phase argon detectors, in the visible and NIR range, using a silicon photomultiplier matrix and electroluminescence due to either neutral bremsstrahlung or avalanche scintillation. The amplitude yield and position resolution were measured for these readout techniques, which allowed to assess the detection threshold for electron and nuclear recoils in two-phase argon detectors for dark matter searches. Abstract: Large liquid argon detectors offer one of the best avenues for the detection of galactic weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) via their scattering on atomic nuclei. The liquid argon target allows exquisite discrimination between nuclear and electron recoil signals via pulse-shape discrimination of the scintillation signals. Atmospheric argon (AAr), however, has a naturally occurring radioactive isotope, $^{39}$Ar, a $\beta$ emitter of cosmogenic origin. For large detectors, the atmospheric $^{39}$Ar activity poses pile-up concerns. The use of argon extracted from underground wells, deprived of $^{39}$Ar, is key to the physics potential of these experiments. The DarkSide-20k dark matter search experiment will operate a dual-phase time projection chamber with 50 tonnes of radio-pure underground argon (UAr), that was shown to be depleted of $^{39}$Ar with respect to AAr by a factor larger than 1400. Assessing the $^{39}$Ar content of the UAr during extraction is crucial for the success of DarkSide-20k, as well as for future experiments of the Global Argon Dark Matter Collaboration (GADMC). This will be carried out by the DArT in ArDM experiment, a small chamber made with extremely radio-pure materials that will be placed at the centre of the ArDM detector, in the Canfranc Underground Laboratory (LSC) in Spain. The ArDM LAr volume acts as an active veto for background radioactivity, mostly $\gamma$-rays from the ArDM detector materials and the surrounding rock. Abstract: DarkSide uses a dual-phase Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber (TPC) to search for WIMP dark matter. The paper will present the latest result on the search for low mass (MW IMP < 20 Gev/c2) and high mass (MW IMP > 100 Gev/c2) WIMPs from the current experiment, DarkSide-50, running since mid 2015 a 50-kg-active-mass TPC, filled with argon from an underground source. The next stage of the DarkSide program will be a new generation experiment involving a global collaboration from all the current Argon based experiments. DarkSide-20k, is designed as a 20-tonne fiducial mass TPC with SiPM based photosensors, expected to be free of any background for an exposure of >100 ton x years. Like its predecessor DarkSide-20k will be housed at the Gran Sasso (LNGS) underground laboratory, and it is expected to attain a WIMP-nucleon cross section exclusion sensitivity of 10−47 cm2 for a WIMP mass of 1 TeV /c2 in a 5 yr run. A subsequent objective, towards the end of the next decade, will be the construction of the ultimate detector, ARGO, with a 300 t fiducial mass to push the sensitivity to the neutrino floor region for high mass WIMPs. The combination of the three experiments, part of a single family, will cover completely the WIMP hypothesis from 1 GeV /c2 to several hundreds of TeV /c2 masses.

Abstract: DarkSide uses a dual-phase Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber (TPC) to search for WIMP dark matter. The paper will present the latest result on the search for low mass (MW IMP < 20 Gev/c2) and high mass (MW IMP > 100 Gev/c2) WIMPs from the current experiment, DarkSide-50, running since mid 2015 a 50-kg-active-mass TPC, filled with argon from an underground source. The next stage of the DarkSide program will be a new generation experiment involving a global collaboration from all the current Argon based experiments. DarkSide-20k, is designed as a 20-tonne fiducial mass TPC with SiPM based photosensors, expected to be free of any background for an exposure of >100 ton x years. Like its predecessor DarkSide-20k will be housed at the Gran Sasso (LNGS) underground laboratory, and it is expected to attain a WIMP-nucleon cross section exclusion sensitivity of 10−47 cm2 for a WIMP mass of 1 TeV /c2 in a 5 yr run. A subsequent objective, towards the end of the next decade, will be the construction of the ultimate detector, ARGO, with a 300 t fiducial mass to push the sensitivity to the neutrino floor region for high mass WIMPs. The combination of the three experiments, part of a single family, will cover completely the WIMP hypothesis from 1 GeV /c2 to several hundreds of TeV /c2 masses.

Abstract: This article reports the valence-band x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) of various forms of sodium phosphate. Valence-band spectra are compared to spectra generated from cluster and band-structure calculations. Five different forms of sodium phosphate are studied as follows, Na4P2O7, Na5P3O10, Na4P4O12, Na2H2P2O7, and NaH2PO2. Core-level XPS studies are of little use for differentiating between such similar compounds while valence band photoemission has been found to be particularly effective at identifying subtle differences in surface chemistry. The results indicate that the valence-band region clearly distinguishes between these different phosphates and that these differences can be predicted by spectra generated from both cluster and band-structure calculations.

Abstract: Developing simple synthetic methods to control the size and morphology of nanocrystals is an active area of research as these parameters control the material's electronic and optical properties. For a semiconductor with a symmetrical crystal structure such as lead selenide, anisotropic colloidal growth has been previously accomplished via the use of templates, seeds, or by block assembly of smaller, symmetrical subunits. Here, we present a simple method to create monodisperse lead selenide nanorods and multipods at low temperatures. The size distribution and the observed morphologies are consistent with a continuous, anisotropic growth of material. The syntheses of these anisotropic shapes are due to the nature of the nuclei that form upon injection of precursors into partially oxidized alkene solvents that may contain lactone and carbonate-functional derivatives.

Abstract: Oleic acid capped lead sulfide (PbS) and lead selenide (PbSe) were synthesized, then subjected to a postsynthesis washing in a 1:1 ethanol/hexane solution. The relationship of third order nonlinear optical properties to nanocrystal surface chemistry as affected by washing was analyzed using nanosecond 532 nm Z-scan and measurement of near-IR radiative emission. The results indicated a significant change in optical nonlinearities which emerged only after the nanocrystals were washed in the ethanol/hexane mixture. Transmission electron microscopy of the oleic acid capped PbSe and PbS nanocrystals showed a cubic shape, narrow size distribution and an average size of ∼10 nm. Neither size nor shape of the nanocrystals were modified by the washing process, indicating that all optical differences were related to changes in surface chemistry and the formation of deep trap states. Abstract: A series of lead sulfide (PbS) nanocrystals grown in oleic acid (OA), poly(1-decene) (PD), poly(1-butene) (PB), and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) were synthesized. The relationship between nonlinear optical properties and surface properties of PbS nanocrystals were analyzed using 532 and 1064 nm nanosecond open-aperture Z-scan measurements and femtosecond pump−probe experiments with a 390 nm pump and a 450−700 nm probe. The results indicated a clear difference in nonlinear optical properties between the OA and PVA composites in comparison to PB and PD. The materials with strong covalent bonding between the nanocrystal surface and organic phase, PVA and OA, did not show nonlinear absorption behavior in Z-scan measurements at 532 or 1064 nm. The PB and PD composites did, however, show strong reverse saturable absorption in Z-scans recorded at these wavelengths. Abstract: Nanocomposite films were prepared by two methods in which lead sulfide (PbS) nanocrystals were contained in an organic matrix. One method used a wet chemical synthesis of the nanocrystals in the direct presence of a polymer, where the polymer controlled nanocrystal growth. The second method was gaseous deposition of nanocrystals into the organic phase. The two methods were similar in that the nanocrystals in the composites were free from surfactant capping layers that otherwise would add an interfacial region between the nanocrystal and the organic matrix. The gaseous deposition technique had several advantages over the wet chemical synthesis in that it allowed direct control over nanocrystal size and density, improved flexibility in the choice of organic phase, and was compatible with lithographic methods.

Abstract: Lead sulfide nanocrystals were grown in toluene solutions of poly(2-methoxy-5-(2′-ethyl-hexyloxy)-p-phenylene vinylene, polyethylene, poly(1-butene), poly(1-decene), and polystyrene. The PbS nanocrystal diameter was controlled by the polymer used for synthesis and ranged from 4 to 9 nm. Strong nonlinear absorption was observed in open aperture Z-scan measurements of solutions containing the synthesized nanocomposites. The best fit to the experimental data gave high values for βeff in the range of 100−200 cm/GW. The nonlinear absorption of these polymer grown nanocrystals was not observed in nanocrystals grown in polyvinyl alcohol or with oleic acid capping. These differences in nonlinear optical absorption were due to surface chemistry, as the polymer synthesized nanocrystals were free of strongly bonding groups such as surfactant capping or hydroxyl groups. The βeff values in these materials also showed no dependence on nanocrystal size.

Abstract: This article continues a series of papers that shows how thin (10nm or less) oxide-free phosphate films can be formed on a number of metals. The films formed have potential as corrosion resistant films. Previous papers have shown that it is possible to extend the range of the surface coatings that can be formed by placing a thin polymer layer over the phosphate layer. In this work it is shown how the water insoluble polymer poly(ether ketone ketone) (PEKK) can be placed over a thin oxide-free phosphate film on aluminum metal. The surface and the interfaces involved were studied by valence band and core level x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Difference spectra in the valence band region were used to show that there is a chemical interaction between the PEKK and phosphate thin films on the aluminum metal. Abstract: This article reports the preparation of thin (less than 100A) oxide-free phosphate films of various compositions on vanadium metal. These films are interesting because of their potential for corrosion inhibition, adhesion promotion, and biocompatibility. Valence and core-level x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used to characterize the films. The valence band spectra obtained were compared with spectra generated from band structure calculations for various vanadium phosphates and from previously reported spectra of vanadium phosphates. Vanadium phosphate coatings were created by the reaction of vanadium metal and different phosphorus-oxygen containing acids: H3PO4, H3PO3, H3PO2, and H2P2O7. This article focuses upon the valence band region which shows significant differences between the four vanadium phosphate films formed as well as clear differences between the these phosphates and vanadium oxides. Abstract: The electron injection dynamics of RuII(4,4‘-dicarboxy-2,2‘-bipyridine)2cis(NCS)2 (N3 dye) adsorbed on MoS2 nanoclusters have been studied using static and time-resolved optical spectroscopy. Static spectroscopy and the comparison with RuII(2,2‘-bipyridine)2cis(NCS)2 indicate that the N3 is bound to the MoS2 nanoclusters and that the binding occurs through the carboxylates. The static absorption spectrum of adsorbed N3/MoS2 is red shifted about 1.2 nm compared to N3 in an equivalent acetonitrile/hexanol/tridodecylmethylammonium iodide solution. The extent of the spectral shift indicates that the coupling is comparable to that in the N3/TiO2 case. The time-resolved results indicate that about 35% of the adsorbed dyes inject electrons into the MoS2 conduction band on the 250 ps time scale, and about 65% do not inject. The relationship of third order nonlinear optical properties to nanocrystal surface chemistry as affected by this washing was analyzed using nanosecond 532 nm Z-scan. The results indicated a significant change in optical properties emerged only after the nanocrystals, regardless of shape, were washed in the ethanol/hexane mixture. The "as grown" nanocrystals displayed high emission efficiency with no nonlinear absorption, which converted to a highly-absorbing and strongly scattering media with quenching of optical emission following washing. Transmission electron microscopy showed that neither the size nor shape of the nanocrystals was changed by washing, indicating that all differences were related to changes in surface chemistry. Finally, the Z-scan of washed nanocrystals displayed a strong correlation between nonlinear scattering and nonlinear transmittance which was also not dependent upon shape. Abstract: Lead sulfide nanocrystals (PbS NCs) were codeposited into two organic films, titanyl phthalocyanine (TiOPc) and alpha-sexithiophene, using cluster beam deposition (CBD). NCs of average diameters of approximately 3-4 nm were evenly distributed in these organic films with average particle spacings of approximately 4 nm, as determined by transmission electron microscopy. The film composition and NC surface chemistry were monitored by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and other methods. Pb:S stoichiometry in the NC/TiOPc film was determined by XPS to correspond to the PbS cubic rock salt structure. Soft-XPS using 200 eV energy photons determined the NC-organic surface chemistry by resolving the S 2p core level into four distinct components for sulfur. The soft-XPS results found that the PbS NC surface chemistry could be tuned by varying the H(2)S/Ar gas ratio within the CBD source.

Abstract: Surface polymerization by ion-assisted deposition was used to grow phenylene vinylene films (SPIAD-PPV) using the evaporation of 2methoxy-5-(2'-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-bis((4',4 ''-bisstyryl) benzene) (MEH-OPV5) and the simultaneous deposition of non-mass-selected 10-200 eV thiophene or acetylene ions. Images recorded by scanning electron microscopy showed differences in SPIAD-PPV film morphology versus evaporated MEH-OPV5 that indicated changes in the underlying chemical structure. Spectroscopic differences between MEH-OPV5 and SPIAD-PPV films suggested preferential attack of vinylene groups and/or hydrocarbon side chains. A possible explanation for the changes in morphology and electronic structure was cross-linking at vinylene sites of adjacent MEH-OPV5 molecules which could lead to changes in molecular packing. Although morphological and electronic differences were seen for SPIAD-PPV films, these films still showed valence bands characteristic of phenylene vinylenes. (c) 2008 Elsevier B.V. Abstract: Siderophores are extracellular iron-binding compounds that mediate iron transport into many cells. We present evidence of analogous molecules for copper transport from methane-oxidizing bacteria, represented here by a small fluorescent chromopeptide (C 45 N 12 O 14 H 62 Cu, 1216 daltons) produced by Methylosinus trichosporium OB3b. The crystal structure of this compound, methanobactin, was resolved to 1.15 angstroms. It is composed of a tetrapeptide, a tripeptide, and several unusual moieties, including two 4-thionyl-5-hydroxy-imidazole chromophores that coordinate the copper, a pyrrolidine that confers a bend in the overall chain, and an amino - terminal isopropylester group. The copper coordination environment includes a dual nitrogen- and sulfur-donating system derived from the thionyl imidazolate moieties. Structural elucidation of this molecule has broad implications in terms of organo-copper chemistry, biological methane oxidation, and global carbon cycling.

Abstract: Hadamard transform (HT) spectrometry is introduced using a 3-resolution element example to illustrate the operation of an HT spectrometer and its multiplex advantage leading to an improved signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The Hadamard encoding mask is described and the digital micro-mirror array (DMA) is introduced and described to demonstrate that the DMA is an attractive choice for the Hadamard encoding mask. A near-infrared DMA spectrometer and some of its features are described and its SNR advantage relative to a classical scanning dispersive spectrometer is demonstrated experimentally. The potential for the combination of the DMA with a single-element detector to provide an important advancement in spectroscopic instrumentation is indicated. 40. The investigation of potential corrosion resistant phosphorus containing and polymer films using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy

Abstract: This dissertation will examine the fabrication of different phosphorus containing films and their use as corrosion preventative films and adhesion materials between polymers and metal and metal alloys. Orthophosphate films are used in several metals and metal alloys to prevent corrosion and promote adhesion between paints or polymers and metal substrates. One key component is to examine the use of different phosphorus containing acids that might lead to phosphorus containing films which would compliment the mainly orthophosphate films currently in use. The objectives of this study are to see if it is possible to fabricate different phosphorus containing films, use them to adhere polymers to metal and metal alloys, and test the phosphorus containing films' and polymer films' corrosion protection properties. The thermoplastic resin, Poly(ether ketone ketone), or PEKK was found to adhere well to different phosphorus containing films and protect the underlying layers from oxidation in 4-D water. The phosphorus containing films were created by electrochemical deposition in different 5 M phosphorus containing acids. The metal or metal alloy was abraded to remove the native oxide and treated in the electrochemical cell. The second, separate polymer films were created by dip coating the metal or metal alloy in a polymer solution. The film thickness in both cases was controlled to be less than 100[angstrom] to ensure that the underlying metal or metal alloy could be detected. The surface chemical analysis was collected using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, or XPS. Core level and valence band XPS were used to distinguish the differences in the chemistry at the surfaces. The valence band XPS spectra were interpreted using spectra generated by multiple scattered wave calculations and band structure calculations. In the cases were more than one film was present subtraction and addition spectrum were used to interpret the chemistry in the interface region of the films.

41. Surface studies of thin films with a focus on potentially protective films on vanadium

Abstract: Thin films can be created on the surface of a metal, protecting it from oxidation and corrosion. Phosphate films have historically been a common choice for these corrosion resistant films. In this dissertation, the oxidation of vanadium metal by water and atmosphere is studied. Also, a series of phosphate films on the surface of vanadium metal were created and are studied as potential corrosion resistant films. Lastly, an independent study identifying the oxidation state of copper in a biological sample is carried out. To characterize these thin films, X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) is employed. The reaction of vanadium metal with the atmosphere and distilled, de-ionized, water is studied. The core level and valence band results are explored and compared to calculated valence band spectra for some vanadium oxides. The etching of vanadium metal and reaction of the etched metal with a phosphoric acid solution are studied. Synthesized vanadium phosphate compounds serve as model compounds for the analysis of a phosphate coating created on the surface of vanadium metal by the reaction of vanadium metal with phosphoric acid by a newly developed bench top method. The core level and valence band regions for the compounds and coating are discussed along with cluster and band structure calculations for interpretation. The variation in the coating on vanadium metal by biasing the metal at different potentials during reaction is also studied. Coatings are also created on vanadium metal using different forms of phosphorus oxy-acid. An analysis of the various coatings is performed by XPS and accompanied by predictive calculations. In an additional study, the oxidation state of copper in a biological compound is identified. The analysis makes use of satellite features commonly seen in XPS to make the determination. A discussion of the origin of these features and the energy of the shifts is given, along with the results for the other core level XPS regions for the compound.
