In the new digital landscape, contemporary issues such as the need to promote online creativity, support digital live streaming, and develop effective computer hardware should be addressed by the copyright licensing scheme. The purpose of the paper is to consider the effectiveness of the copyright licensing scheme in Part IVA of Copyright Act 1968 (Cth) (‘the Act’) and analyse how it can be strengthened to support creativity and digital exchange. The first paper part discusses about justifications for open access, its desirability as a publishing model and lessons drawn from European institutions where efficient implementation of open access is applicable. Hence, such lessons should be considered in a future inquiry from the Australian Law Reform Commission and become part of The Future of Law Reform inquiry (2020). The second paper part considers the institutional perspective by examining specific Australian institutions and argues that ‘reconstruction’ of copyright licencing laws, will further access opportunities, and enhance scientific communication, in Australia. All in all, reconsideration of the final report on Intellectual Property Arrangements Inquiry issued from the Australian Productivity Commission (2016) potentially can lead to gradual integration of an open access provision in ‘the Act’, which will enhance copyright licencing laws.

It is widely recognised that migrants and irregular migrants are at risk of modern slavery and slavery-like practices worldwide. As migrants and irregular migrants make their way across state borders, or reach their destination countries, they have been victim to practices such as forced labour, exploitation, wage theft, torture and inhuman treatment and sexual servitude, among other practices. Australia is no exception, with just under 300 cases of modern slavery reported to the Australian Federal Police between 2021 and 2022. Although Australia has acted to stop slavery and slavery-like practices, it has focused on a law enforcement response, ignoring the role that laws and policies play in contributing to modern slavery in Australia. This article adopts a vulnerability approach to modern slavery, examining how legal, policy, institutional and structural factors within Australia contribute to exacerbating the vulnerability of migrants and irregular migrants to modern slavery and slavery-like practices. Utilising a vulnerability framework not only moves beyond the law enforcement approaches taken by the Australian government, but sheds important light on the need for policy, legal and institutional reform to effectively combat modern slavery in Australia and ensure there is redress and justice for its victims.

The coronavirus outbreak in Wuhan, China has sparked a global epidemic, which the World Health Organization declared a public health emergency of international concern on 31st January 2020 (Beijing time). This crisis has attracted intense media attention. Recently, some media outlets inappropriately labelled the coronavirus by race, using such headlines as “Chinese virus pandemonium” and even suggesting “China kids stay home.” The biased and misleading coverage presented via Western media channels has incited anger throughout the Chinese community and has placed undue stress upon Chinese individuals living outside China. This post-published review takes a tourism-focused perspective to examine findings from a quantitative study (Rodriguez-Seijas, Stohl, Hasin, & Eaton, 2015) published in 2015 in JAMA Psychiatry. The current paper highlights the potential impacts of misleading and biased media coverage on Chinese individuals’ mental health. Specifically, this work considers perceived racial discrimination stemming from coronavirus as a public health crisis and the effects of such discrimination on individuals of Chinese heritage. Similarly imperative are pertinent effects on country image and destination image with respect to tourism marketing and tourist behaviour during times of crisis. By considering racism in the context of the coronavirus outbreak, this paper identifies potential avenues for relevant research in tourism and hospitality.
