1. On the low-energy limit of stationary and axisymmetric solutions in General Relativity

Abstract

We study the low-energy limit of General Relativity in the presence of stationarity and axial symmetry, coupled to dust. Specifically, we demonstrate that differences between the dynamics of General Relativity and those of Newtonian gravity persist even in the weak-field and slow-motion regime. Notably, these differences are driven by dragging terms that are not necessarily small, as is typically the case in the well-known gravitomagnetic limit. To highlight this distinction, we introduce the concept of strong gravitomagnetism. We provide a pedagogical discussion of how these discrepancies arise and outline a systematic procedure to solve the equations of motion for such systems. Furthermore, we present analytical results for specific cases and also give the general solution for the vacuum case. A particularly notable result is our demonstration of how General Relativity can naturally account for a Tully-Fisher-like relation., Comment: 27 pages, 2 figures

2. Wilson Loops and Spherical Branes

Abstract

We study 1/2-BPS Wilson loop operators in maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on $d$-dimensional spheres. Their vacuum expectation values can be computed at large $N$ through supersymmetric localisation. The holographic duals are given by back-reacted spherical D-branes. For $d\neq 4$, the resulting theories are non-conformal and correspondingly, the dual geometries do not possess an asymptotic AdS region. The main aim of this work is to compute the holographic Wilson loops by evaluating the partition function of a probe fundamental string and M2-brane in the dual geometry, focusing on the next-to-leading order. Along the way, we highlight a variety of issues related to the presence of a non-constant dilaton. In particular, the structure of the divergences of the one-loop partition functions takes a non-universal form in contrast to examples available in the literature. We devise a general framework to treat the divergences, successfully match the sub-leading scaling with $\lambda$ and $N$, and provide a first step towards obtaining the numerical prefactor., Comment: 68 pages, 4 figures

3. U-Folds From Geodesics in Moduli Space

Abstract

We exploit the presence of moduli fields in the ${\rm AdS}_3\times { S}^3\times CY_2$, where $CY_2=T^4$ or $K3$, solution to Type IIB superstring theory, to construct a U-fold solution with geometry ${\rm AdS}_2\times S^1\times {\rm S}^3\times CY_2$. This is achieved by giving a non-trivial dependence of the moduli fields in ${\rm SO}(4,n)/{\rm SO}(4)\times {\rm SO}(n)$ ($n=4$ for $CY_2=T^4$ and $n=20$ for $CY_2=K3$ ), on the coordinate $\eta$ of a compact direction $S^1$ along the boundary of ${\rm AdS}_3$, so that these scalars, as functions of $\eta$, describe a geodesic on the corresponding moduli space. The back-reaction of these evolving scalars on spacetime amounts to a splitting of ${\rm AdS}_3$ into ${\rm AdS}_2\times S^1$ with a non-trivial monodromy along $S^1$ defined by the geodesic. Choosing the monodromy matrix in ${\rm SO}(4,n;\,\mathbb{Z})$, this supergravity solution is conjectured to be a consistent superstring background. We generalize this construction starting from an ungauged theory in $D=2d$, $d$ odd, describing scalar fields non-minimally coupled to $(d-1)$-forms and featuring solutions with topology ${\rm AdS}_d\times S^d$, and moduli scalar fields. We show, in this general setting, that giving the moduli fields a geodesic dependence on the $\eta $ coordinate of an $S^1$ at the boundary of ${\rm AdS}_d$ is sufficient to split this space into ${\rm AdS}_{d-1}\times S^1$, with a monodromy along $S^1$ defined by the starting and ending points of the geodesic. This mechanism seems to be at work in the known J-fold solutions in $D=10$ Type IIB theory and hints towards the existence of similar solutions in the Type IIB theory compactified on $CY_2$. We argue that the holographic dual theory on these backgrounds is a 1+0 CFT on an interface in the 1+1 theory at the boundary of the original ${\rm AdS}_3$., Comment: 47 pages

4. Particle motion in a rotating dust spacetime: the Bonnor solution

Abstract

We investigate the geometrical properties, spectral classification, geodesics, and causal structure of the Bonnor's spacetime [Journal of Physics A Math. Gen., \textbf{10}, 1673 (1977)], i.e., a stationary axisymmetric solution with a rotating dust as a source. This spacetime has a directional singularity at the origin of the coordinates (related to the diverging vorticity field of the fluid there), which is surrounded by a toroidal region where closed timelike curves (CTCs) are allowed, leading to chronology violations. We use the effective potential approach to provide a classification of the different kind of geodesic orbits on the symmetry plane as well as to study the helical-like motion aroud the symmetry axis on a cylinder with constant radius. In the former case we find that as a general feature for positive values of the angular momentum test particles released from a fixed space point and directed towards the singularity are repelled and scattered back as soon as they approach the CTC boundary, without reaching the central singularity. In contrast, for negative values of the angular momentum there exist conditions in the parameter space for which particles are allowed to enter the pathological region. 5. Supersymmetric wormholes in String theory

Abstract

We construct a large family of Euclidean supersymmetric wormhole solutions of type IIB supergravity which are asymptotically AdS$_5 \times S^5$. The solutions are constructed using consistent truncation to maximally gauged supergravity in five dimensions which is further truncated to a four scalar model. Within this model we perform a full analytic classification of supersymmetric domain wall solutions with flat Euclidean domain wall slices. On each side of the wormhole, the solution asymptotes to AdS$_5$ dual to ${\cal N}= 4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills deformed by a supersymmetric mass term., Comment: 7 pages

Gravitoelectromagnetic analogies are somewhat ubiquitous in General Relativity, and they are often used to explain peculiar effects of Einstein's theory of gravity in terms of familiar results from classical electromagnetism. Perhaps, the best known of these analogy pertains to the similarity between the equations of electromagnetism and those of the linearized theory of General Relativity. But the analogy is somewhat deeper and ultimately rooted in the splitting of spacetime, which is preliminary to the definition of the measurement process. Abstract

We use the gravitoelectromagnetic approach to the solutions of Einstein's equations in the weak-field and slow-motion approximation to investigate the impact of General Relativity on galactic dynamics. In particular, we focus on a class of the solutions for the gravitomagnetic field, and show that, contrary to what is expected, they may introduce non negligible corrections to the Newtonian velocity profile. These are the homogeneous solutions (HS) for the gravitomagnetic field, i.e. solutions with vanishing matter currents. Abstract

We study disc galaxies in the framework of General Relativity to focus on the possibility that, even in the low energy limit, there are relevant corrections with respect to the purely Newtonian approach. Our analysis encompasses the model both considering a low energy expansion and exact solutions, making it clear the connection between these different approaches. In particular, we focus on two different limits: the well known gravitomagnetic analogy and a new limit, called strong gravitomagnetism, which has corrections in c of the same order as the Newtonian terms. We show that these two limits of the general class of solution can account for the observed flat velocity profile, contrary to what happens using Newtonian models, where a dark matter contribution is required. Abstract

A recent analysis of data from the ESA Gaia mission demonstrated that the kinematics of stars in the Milky Way can be modelled without invoking the presence of dark matter whatsoever. Indeed, the higher-than-Keplerian velocities observed in outer stars can be ascribed to the properties of the general relativistic (GR) metric assumed to describe the Galaxy. Here we generalize the concept, and derive the most general exact GR model for a stationary axi-symmetric dynamically cold dust structure. We explicitly show how deviations from the commonly adopted Newtonian dynamics are indeed manifest even at low velocities and low densities. We provide for the first time a detailed description of the frequency shift experienced by photons travelling from any emission site within an external disc galaxy to the observer, relating the outcome of the shift measurement to the gravitational properties of the galaxy. Finally, we devise a novel, groundbreaking observational test potentially able to fully characterize the GR metric under the minimal set of assumptions mentioned above. 10. Instantons and no wormholes in $AdS_3\times S^3 \times CY_2$

Abstract

We study supergravity instantons sourced by axion (and saxion) fields in the Euclidean $AdS_3\times S^3 \times CY_2$ vacua of IIB supergravity. Such instantons are described by geodesic curves on the moduli space; the timelike geodesics can describe Euclidean wormholes, the lightlike geodesics describe (generalisations of) D-instantons and spacelike geodesics are sub-extremal versions thereof. We perform a concrete classification of such geodesics and find that, despite earlier claims, the wormholes fail to be regular. A subclass of the lightlike geodesics is supersymmetric and, up to dualities, lift to Euclidean strings wrapping 2-cycles in the CY$_2$. 11. Rigid rotation in GR and a generalization of the virial theorem

Abstract

In this work we study the properties of rigidly rotating neutral dust solutions in general relativity. This class of solutions gained relevance recently due to applications to the dynamics of spiral galaxies. We show that this class could be interpreted as a rigid body in general relativity and we analyze the different properties respect to the rigidly rotating disk in special relativity: for example, the general relativistic counterpart shows no Doppler effect for a light signal emitted and received from any two points at rest respect to the rigid body. This effect can be important to test the validity of the assumed model for our galaxy. In the second part we approach the problem from a low energy expansion perspective and we write down a generalization of the virial theorem for stationary spacetimes. 12. Black hole attractors and U(1) Fayet-Iliopoulos gaugings: analysis and classification

We classify the critical points of the effective black hole potential which governs the attractor mechanism taking place at the horizon of static dyonic extremal black holes in $\mathcal{N}=2$, $D=4$ Maxwell-Einstein supergravity with $U(1)$ Fayet-Iliopoulos gaugings. We use a manifestly symplectic covariant formalism, and we consider both spherical and hyperbolic horizons, recognizing the relevant sub-classes to which some representative examples belong. We also exploit projective special K\"{a}hler geometry of vector multiplets scalar manifolds, the $U$-duality-invariant quartic structure (and 2-polarizations thereof) in order to retrieve and generalize various expressions of the entropy of asymptotically AdS$_{4}$ BPS black holes, in the cases in which the scalar manifolds are symmetric spaces. Abstract

BackgroundThe coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic significantly affected management of cardiovascular disease around the world. The effect of the pandemic on volume of cardiovascular diagnostic procedures is not known.ObjectivesThis study sought to evaluate the effects of the early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic on cardiovascular diagnostic procedures and safety practices in Asia.MethodsThe International Atomic Energy Agency conducted a worldwide survey to assess changes in cardiovascular procedure volume and safety practices caused by COVID-19. Testing volumes were reported for March 2020 and April 2020 and were compared to those from March 2019. Data from 180 centers across 33 Asian countries were grouped into 4 subregions for comparison.ResultsProcedure volumes decreased by 47% from March 2019 to March 2020, showing recovery from March 2020 to April 2020 in Eastern Asia, particularly in China. The majority of centers cancelled outpatient activities and increased time per study. Practice changes included implementing physical distancing and restricting visitors. Although COVID testing was not commonly performed, it was conducted in one-third of facilities in Eastern Asia. The most severe reductions in procedure volumes were observed in lower-income countries, where volumes decreased 81% from March 2019 to April 2020.ConclusionsThe COVID-19 pandemic in Asia caused significant reductions in cardiovascular diagnostic procedures, particularly in low-income countries. Further studies on effects of COVID-19 on cardiovascular outcomes and changes in care delivery are warranted.

ObjectivesThis study sought to quantify and compare the decline in volumes of cardiovascular procedures between the United States and non-U.S. institutions during the early phase of the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.BackgroundThe COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the care of many non-COVID-19 illnesses. Reductions in diagnostic cardiovascular testing around the world have led to concerns over the implications of reduced testing for cardiovascular disease (CVD) morbidity and mortality.MethodsData were submitted to the INCAPS-COVID (International Atomic Energy Agency Non-Invasive Cardiology Protocols Study of COVID-19), a multinational registry comprising 909 institutions in 108 countries (including 155 facilities in 40 U.S. states), assessing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on volumes of diagnostic cardiovascular procedures. Data were obtained for April 2020 and compared with volumes of baseline procedures from March 2019. We compared laboratory characteristics, practices, and procedure volumes between U.S. and non-U.S. facilities and between U.S. geographic regions and identified factors associated with volume reduction in the United States.ResultsReductions in the volumes of procedures in the United States were similar to those in non-U.S. facilities (68% vs. 63%, respectively; p = 0.237), although U.S. facilities reported greater reductions in invasive coronary angiography (69% vs. 53%, respectively; p

15. Towards a full general relativistic approach to galaxies

We analyze the dynamics of a single spiral galaxy from a general relativistic viewpoint. We employ the known family of stationary axially-symmetric solutions to Einstein gravity coupled with dust in order to model the halo external to the bulge. In particular, we generalize the known results of Balasin and Grumiller, relaxing the condition of co-rotation, thus including non co-rotating dust. This further highlights the discrepancy between Newtonian theory of gravity and general relativity at low velocities and energy densities. We investigate the role of dragging in simulating dark matter effects. Abstract

BackgroundThe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has adversely affected diagnosis and treatment of noncommunicable diseases. Its effects on delivery of diagnostic care for cardiovascular disease, which remains the leading cause of death worldwide, have not been quantified.ObjectivesThe study sought to assess COVID-19's impact on global cardiovascular diagnostic procedural volumes and safety practices.MethodsThe International Atomic Energy Agency conducted a worldwide survey assessing alterations in cardiovascular procedure volumes and safety practices resulting from COVID-19. Noninvasive and invasive cardiac testing volumes were obtained from participating sites for March and April 2020 and compared with those from March 2019. Availability of personal protective equipment and pandemic-related testing practice changes were ascertained.ResultsSurveys were submitted from 909 inpatient and outpatient centers performing cardiac diagnostic procedures, in 108 countries. Procedure volumes decreased 42% from March 2019 to March 2020, and 64% from March 2019 to April 2020. Transthoracic echocardiography decreased by 59%, transesophageal echocardiography 76%, and stress tests 78%, which varied between stress modalities. Abstract

We find a new non BPS solution in $N=2$ $D=4$ gauged supergravity coupled to $U(1)$ gauge fields and matter. It consists in a closed universe with two extremal black holes of equal size, surrounding two singularities. They have opposite magnetic charges (and no electric charges), but stay in static equilibrium thanks to the positive pressure of a cosmological constant. The geometry is perfectly symmetric under the exchange of the black holes and the flip of the sign of the charges. However the scalar field is non constant and non symmetric, with different values at the horizons, which depend on a real modulus. At one of the horizon the solution becomes $\frac 12$-BPS supersymmetric, while at the other one there is no supersymmetry, but the entropy remains independent from the scalar modulus., Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures, extended version

Abstract

IntroductionThe humoral response after SARS-CoV-2 vaccination and boosters in kidney transplant recipients (KTRs) is heterogeneous and depends on immunosuppression status. There is no validated immune measurement associated with serological response in clinical practice. Multicolor flow cytometric immunophenotyping could be useful for measuring immune response. This study aimed to study B- and T-cell compartments through Standardized EuroFlow PID Orientation after SARS-CoV-2 vaccination and their association with IgG SARS-CoV-2 seropositivity status after two doses or boosters.MethodsWe conducted a multicenter prospective study to evaluate humoral response after SARS-CoV-2 vaccination in KTRs. Heterologous regimen: two doses of inactivated SARS-CoV-2 and two boosters of BNT162b2 mRNA (n=75). Homologous vaccination: two doses of BNT162b2 mRNA and one BNT162b2 mRNA booster (n=13). Booster doses were administrated to KTRs without taking into account their IgG SARS-CoV-2 seropositivity status. Peripheral blood samples were collected 30 days after the second dose and after the last heterologous or homologous booster. A standardized EuroFlow PID Orientation Tube (PIDOT) and a supervised automated analysis were used for immune monitoring cellular subsets after boosters.ResultsA total of 88 KTRs were included and divided into three groups according to the time of the first detected IgG SARS-CoV-2 seropositivity: non-responders (NRs, n=23), booster responders (BRs, n=41), and two-dose responders (2DRs, n=24). The NR group was more frequent on mycophenolate than the responder groups (NRs, 96%; BRs, 80%; 2DRs, 42%; p=0.000). Switched memory B cells in the 2DR group were higher than those in the BR and NR groups (medians of 30, 17, and 10 cells/ul, respectively; p=0.017). Additionally, the absolute count of central memory/terminal memory CD8 T cells was higher in the 2DR group than in the BR and NR groups. (166, 98, and 93 cells/ul, respectively; p=0.041). The rest of the T-cell populations studied did not show a statistical difference.Conclusionswitched memory B cells and memory CD8 T-cell populations in peripheral blood were associated with the magnitude of the humoral response after SARS-CoV-2 vaccination. Boosters increased IgG anti-SARS-CoV-2 levels, CM/TM CD8 T cells, and switched MBCs in patients with seropositivity after two doses. Interestingly, no seropositivity after boosters was associated with the use of mycophenolate and a lower number of switched MBCs and CM/TM CD8 T cells in peripheral blood.

Abstract

Abstract We find a new non BPS solution in N = 2 D = 4 gauged supergravity coupled to U(1) gauge fields and matter. It consists in a closed universe with two extremal black holes of equal size, surrounding two singularities. They have opposite magnetic charges (and no electric charges), but stay in static equilibrium thanks to the positive pressure of a cosmological constant. The geometry is perfectly symmetric under the exchange of the black holes and the flip of the sign of the charges. However the scalar field is non constant and non symmetric, with different values at the horizons, which depend on a real modulus. Remarkably we show that it satisfies the attractor mechanism and the entropy indeed depends only on the magnetic charges. At one of the horizons the solution becomes 1 2 $$ \frac{1}{2} $$ -BPS supersymmetric, while at the other one there is no supersymmetry, but the entropy remains independent from the scalar modulus.

Abstract

La hiperoxaluria primaria (HOP) es una enfermedad hereditaria autosómica recesiva del metabolismo del glioxalato, con sobreproducción de oxalato, hiperoxaluria, depósito de oxalato de calcio en varios órganos, litiasis y nefrocalcinosis. El trasplante hepático corrige el defecto metabólico, y en pacientes con HOP y enfermedad renal extrema, el trasplante hepatorrenal es la opción de preferencia. Describimos nuestra experiencia en un paciente con HOP tipo I y enfermedad renal, que recibe trasplante hepatorrenal combinado. Enfatizamos en la evolución de la oxaluria y la oxalemia postrasplante, y en las medidas terapéuticas para evitar recurrencia de nefrocalcinosis/litiasis en injerto renal.

Abstract

The forensic information of criminal interest that can be obtained from a decomposing human corpse can be harmed by postmortem changes. The presence of the water beetle Rhantus validus feeding on a corpse found in an artificial freshwater pond in Peñehue, Región de La Araucanía, Chile, and postmortem artifacts caused by their necrophagous activity is reported. These skin modifications can be confused with antemortem injuries. The ecological conditions that allow this feeding behavior and the forensic repercussions of this finding are discussed.

Abstract

Este documento de recomendaciones tiene como objetivo orientar a médicos nefrólogos y no nefrólogos que asisten a pacientes con enfermedad renal crónica (ERC) en todas las etapas de la misma, en el proceso de vacunación contra el SARS-CoV-2. Como consecuencia de la situación epidemiológica y de los tiempos del proceso de elaboración de las vacunas disponibles, no se ha generado evidencia lo suficientemente potente, por lo que las recomendaciones no se acompañan del nivel de evidencia. Se fundamenta la necesidad de priorizar la vacunación en este grupo de pacientes en el mayor riesgo de adquirir la infección por SARS-CoV-2, desarrollar la enfermedad COVID-19 con mayor gravedad y presentar una mortalidad más elevada que la población general. Las recomendaciones se organizan por grupos de pacientes considerando pacientes con ERC no dialítica, diálisis y trasplante renal, y pacientes bajo tratamiento inmunosupresor.

Abstract

– Los pacientes con enfermedad renal en todas sus etapas (ERC etapas 1-5, diálisis, trasplante renal) deben ser una población prioritaria en el plan de vacunación contra SARS-CoV-2. – En todos los casos, la vacunación debe administrarse sin importar si los pacientes tuvieron antes COVID-19 o si tienen títulos de IgG positivos para SARS-CoV-2. – Debe vacunarse a todos los pacientes con ERC avanzada, con o sin diálisis crónica, con los esquemas habituales propuestos para las diferentes vacunas disponibles en el medio. – Debe vacunarse a todos los pacientes en lista de espera de trasplante renal. En quienes se encuentran programdos para trasplante inter vivos es deseable que completen la vacunación un mes antes del procedimiento. – Hay que vacunar a todos los pacientes receptores de trasplante renal luego del primer mes del trasplante y aprovechar las situaciones clínicas de estabilidad y menor requerimiento de inmunosupresión. En las situaciones en que se administra timoglobulina o rituximab al trasplante se recomienda diferir la vacunación hasta el tercer mes. Cuando se indica tratamiento contra el rechazo (bolos de metilprednisolona, recambio plasmático terapéutico, gammaglobulina), se recomienda posponer la vacunación al menos dos semanas. – Es preciso vacunar a los pacientes con enfermedades autoinmunitarias (enfermedades autoinmunitarias sistémicas, glomerulopatías), con o sin tratamiento inmunosupresor, de preferencia en el momento en que la enfermedad subyacente esté estable y en el mejor momento de la inmunosupresión.

Abstract

En affirmant que « tout philosophe a deux philosophies : la sienne et celle de Spinoza », Bergson exprime avant tout que le philosophe se doit de rompre avec une pensée dogmatique qui n’a plus lieu d’être et que Spinoza incarne tout particulièrement. Le spinozisme manifeste la pente de l’intelligence lorsqu’elle suit sa logique propre sans être rectifiée par le recours à l’expérience. Or, c’est cette démarche systématique que la philosophie doit désormais abandonner. Bergson est néanmoins hanté par la pensée de Spinoza et le rapport qu’il entretient avec lui, en particulier dans ses cours au Collège de France, met en évidence un lien bien plus complexe et subtil qu’un simple rapport d’opposition. Contre la tendance à la clôture et à la systématicité, Bergson va alors privilégier chez Spinoza la tendance à l’ouverture et au mysticisme. En mettant en lumière cet aspect, cet ouvrage montre la sympathie intellectuelle qui réunit ces penseurs autour des notions de joie et de liberté. C’est pourquoi la figure du Christ va constituer un modèle non seulement éthique mais ontologique. Le terme de mysticisme, chez ces deux auteurs, ne désigne ni le refus de l’expérience ni celui des sciences positives mais renvoie à un rationalisme élargi jusqu’à l’amour du réel.

Abstract

The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) holds the PPP Americas every two years in partnership with a national or subnational government. The regional forum brings together top professionals and public and private-sector representatives from Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) to discuss groundbreaking topics and exchange ideas on planning, structuring, and managing public-private partnerships (PPPs). For the 2023 conference, the IDB is holding three preparatory events - the PPP Talks before the main event. During the PPP Talks, invited experts will lay the groundwork for the discussions to be held during the conference. The third PPP Talk will consist of two panels on May 4th, 2023: Driving Inclusion and Measuring Impact, both topics are part of the thematic agenda of PPP Americas 2023. This Concept Note provides the conceptual framework of the two themes discussed during these panels. In addition, this note offers descriptions of key concepts, as well as the main opportunities and challenges that countries in Latin America and the Caribbean face in each area.
