- Abstract
The Mediterranean Sea has been sampled irregularly by research vessels in the past, mostly by national expeditions in regional waters. To monitor the hydrographic, biogeochemical and circulation changes in the Mediterranean Sea, a systematic repeat oceanographic survey programme called Med-SHIP was recommended by the Mediterranean Science Commission (CIESM) in 2011, as part of the Global Ocean Ship-based Hydrographic Investigations Program (GO-SHIP). Med-SHIP consists of zonal and meridional surveys with different frequencies, where comprehensive physical and biogeochemical properties are measured with the highest international standards. The first zonal survey was done in 2011 and repeated in 2018. In addition, a network of meridional (and other key) hydrographic sections were designed: the first cycle of these sections was completed in 2016, with three cruises funded by the EU project EUROFLEETS2. This paper presents the physical and chemical data of the meridional and key transects in the Western and Eastern Mediterranean Sea collected during those cruises.

During the last decades, the coastal areas of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, on the Red Sea and the Arabian Gulf, have been subjected to intense economic and industrial growth. As a result, it may be expected that the overall environmental status of Saudi Arabian coastal marine waters has been affected by human activities. As a consequence, adequate management of the Saudi Arabian coastal zone requires an assessment of how the various pressures within this zone impact the quality of seawater and sediments. To this end, environmental surveys were conducted over 15 hotspot areas (areas subject to environmental pressures) in the Saudi Arabian coastal zone of the Red Sea and over three hotspot areas in the Saudi Arabian waters of the Arabian Gulf. The survey in the Red Sea, conducted in June/July 2021, acquired measurements from hotspot areas spanning most of the Saudi coastline, extending from near the Saudi–Jordanian border in the north to Al Shuqaiq and Jizan Economic City (close to the Saudi–Yemen border) in the south. The survey in the Arabian Gulf, carried out in September 2021, included the areas of Al Khobar, Dammam and Ras Al Khair. The main objective of both cruises was to record the physical and biogeochemical parameters along the coastal waters of the kingdom, tracing the dispersion of contaminants related to specific pressures. Taken together, these cruises constitute the first multidisciplinary and geographically comprehensive study of contaminants within the Saudi Arabian coastal waters and sediments. The measurements acquired revealed the influence of various anthropogenic pressures on the coastal marine environment of Saudi Arabia and also highlighted a strong influence of hydrographic conditions on the distribution of biochemical properties in the Red Sea and the Arabian Gulf. The data can be accessed at SEANOE 10.17882/96463 (Abualnaja et al., 2023), whereas the details of the sampling stations are available at https://mcep.kaust.edu.sa/cruise-postings (last access: 25 March 2024). The dataset includes the parameters shown in Tables 1a, b and 2a. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aimed to evaluate the efficiency of an integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA) system comprising co-cultured fed fish and organic extractive species representing three distinct trophic levels as well as the impact and potential utilization of two commercially available fish feeds made up of 35% fish meal (FM) and 20% fish meal (LFM) ingredients, using a multi-indicator assessment approach. Significant alterations were observed in growth performance indicators (GPIs), water and sediment quality indices, toxicity tests and biomarkers within the IMTA system. The fish survival, weight gain (WG), and specific growth rate (SGR) were higher in the IMTA system with significantly lower feed conversion ratios (FCRs) and higher feed efficiency (FE) in comparison to the fed fish monoculture system. Yet, organic filter feeders displayed 100% survival, and increased shell growth, while deposit feeders exhibited successful survival and significant weight gain. In the comparison between FM-IMTA and LFM-IMTA, fed fish in FM-IMTA showed higher WG, SGR, and FE with lower FCR. Environmental parameters like temperature, oxygen, and nutrient concentrations fluctuated but generally improved in the IMTA system, indicating lower mesotrophic conditions. Sediment fatty acid profiles differed between systems and toxicity assessments, which suggested a lower impact in IMTA and FM-IMTA systems. The sediment microbial community displayed high similarity within IMTA systems and between FM-IMTA and LFM-IMTA. These findings underscore the potential of IMTA systems for sustainable aquaculture, emphasizing improved growth performance and reduced environmental impact, particularly when using fish meal feeds. - Abstract
Faecal pellet production and content along with egg production of the dominant copepod species Acartia clausi were studied in the Thermaikos Gulf (NW Aegean Sea) during a pre-bloom and a bloom of the toxic dinoflagellate Dinophysis acuminata. Both faecal pellet production (6.8-8.6 ind(-1) d(-1)) and egg production (15.8-47.6 ind(-1) d(-1)) appeared unrelated to the D. acuminata bloom. Less than 11% of the copepod faecal pellets contained one or two D. acuminata cells, almost intact, whereas the other material in the pellets was broken into small pieces or amorphous shapes. The toxin outflux seemed to be insignificant when compared to the mean toxin concentration from the whole D. acuminata population. Finally, the potential grazing impact of A. clausi on D. acuminata during the study period was low.

phytoplankton, diversity indices, pelagic habitat, Marine Strategy Framework Directive, good environmental status, Adriatic Sea, Ionian Sea, Aegean Sea, Mediterranean - Abstract
The methodological standards set by the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (Commission decision 2017/848/EU) for pelagic habitats anticipate the assessment at the scale of region or subregions, which would reflect biogeographic differences in species composition. Phytoplankton diversity indicators can be efficient for reliable assessments of good environmental status (GES), but testing at a large spatial scale to cover wider gradients of natural and anthropogenic pressures is essential. In this work, eight diversity indices were tested against pressure levels within a joint dataset of phytoplankton community structure and abundance from Adriatic, Ionian and Aegean Sea (Fig. 1). Four categories of impacts were defined considering the partial pressures such as pollution, industry, ports and fisheries.

Size spectra exhibit common patterns of variation and predictable responses to pressures across ecosystem types, functional guilds and taxonomic groups. Here, we extend the size spectra approach to phytoplankton ecological status assessment in transitional waters by developing, testing and validating a multi-metric index of size spectra sensitivity (ISS-phyto), which integrates size structure metrics with others such as phytoplankton diversity, biomass and sensitivity of size classes to anthropogenic disturbance. The ability of various theoretical models of size spectra sensitivity to discriminate between disturbed and undisturbed ecosystems and levels of anthropogenic stress was evaluated. We used data on phytoplankton samples collected in 14 Mediterranean and Black sea transitional water ecosystems (coastal lagoons) from Italy, Albania, Greece, Bulgaria and Romania, and compared the models’ efficiency by looking at their pressure–impact response along salinity and enrichment gradients, the latter quantified as variations in dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) and dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP). Data from a fifteenth Mediterranean lagoon was used for external validation purposes. Right asymmetric models of size class sensitivity, implying higher sensitivity of smaller cell size classes, were found to contribute to the ISS-phyto multimetric tool more effectively than symmetric and left asymmetric models, distinguishing disturbed from undisturbed lagoons and disturbed from undisturbed stations within the same lagoon. When based on right asymmetric sensitivity models, i.e., those that were most efficient in identifying anthropogenic impacts, ISS-phyto also showed the best fit of pressure–response relationships along the salinity and enrichment gradients; at low to high levels of impact ISS response was driven by size class sensitivity and at very high impacts by phytoplankton biomass. A scheme for the classification of Ecological Quality Status based on ISS-phyto is proposed and validated. The validation procedure found that ISS-phyto is an effective and sensitive monitoring tool, robust, easy to apply and to inter-calibrate among laboratories.

The similarities and differences in phytoplankton response to anthropogenic nutrient enrichment were studied in an open system (North Aegean Sea) and a coastal site of Saronikos gulf and in the Eastern Mediterranean. Although by physico-chemical parameters two different environments have been compared, the two regions exhibited similar features. The analysis of the data provides information on the contribution of each size class to the total autotrophic biomass and how nutrients and hydrographical variability of the water column affects the picophytoplankton assemblage composition. Phytoplankton size structure depends on a variety of factors, which ultimately are controlled by hydrodynamics of the system (Riegman et al., 1993). In general, the food web structure is also dependent on the nutrient availability. At low nutrient concentration, the picophytoplankton is supposed to be the relatively most important group, whereas under extensive nutrient supply larger size fractions dominate the phytoplankton. These larger organisms can be eaten directly by the mesozooplankton, which is the main component of the diet of the planktivorous fish. Picophytoplankton is not directly consumed by the mesozooplankton but is mainly consumed by protists. Some authors have pointed out that stability-instability conditions in the water column play a major role in controlling phytoplankton size structure. On one hand, hydrodynamical forcing controls nutrient supply to the euphotic layer. High nutrient concentrations cause an increase in the biomass and primary production of larger phytoplankton (Chisholm, 1992; Agawin et al., 2000). On the other hand, water column stability determines the size-differential residence time of phytoplankton cells within the euphotic layer, either favouring large-sized phytoplankton losses by passive sinking or accumulating them through the effect of vertical motion (Margalef, 1985; Malone, 1980; Rodrigues et al., 2001).

- Abstract
Alexandroupolis Gulf is the recipient of the freshwater of the Evros River, the largest river system (in terms of water supply) discharging into Eastern Mediterranean (NE Aegean Sea) after the Danube River. Suspended particulate matter (SPM) samples were collected from various depths, at 14 stations in Alexandroupolis Gulf during four periods (June 1998, September 1998, February 1999 and March 2000) in order to examine the organic carbon, nitrogen and trace elements contents. Although the values of the various parameters fluctuate strongly according to the sampling period, there is a general trend of higher organic carbon values in the deeper sectors of the water column. The seasonally adjustable seawater circulation in the gulf seems to be the regulative factor of the surficial distribution of organic carbon and nitrogen, while calcium carbonate content seems to be connected with the presence of carbonate marine organisms and the seasonal pattern of phytoplankton growth. Moreover, according to C:N ratio values, the origin of carbon in the SPM of the gulf is mainly marine and controlled by marine bacteria, phytoplankton and microalgae abundance. In addition, although the trace element values in the Alexandroupolis Gulf SPM are lower than those recorded in heavily polluted Greek areas, the calculation of Enrichment Factor derives high values in Cu (Enrichment Factor, EF: 37), Cd (EF: 33), Co (EF: 23), Zn (EF: 22), Pb (EF: 13) and Cr (EF: 8), while Ni seems to be unaffected by any human influence (EF: 1). This volume contains the main results of the EC FP7 “The Ocean of Tomorrow” Project CoCoNet, divided in two sections: 1) a set of guidelines to design networks of Marine Protected Areas in the Mediterranean and the Black Seas; 2) a smart wind chart that will allow evaluating the possibility of installing Offshore Wind Farms in both seas. The concept of Cells of Ecosystem Functioning, based on connectivity, is introduced to define natural units of management and conservation. The definition of Good Environmental Status, as defined in the Marine Strategy Framework Directive, is fully embraced to set the objectives of the project, by adopting a holistic approach that integrates a full set of disciplines, ranging from physics to bio-ecology, economics, engineering and many sub-disciplines. The CoCoNet Consortium involved scientists from 22 states, based in Africa, Asia, and Europe, contributing to build a coherent scientific community.
