6. Acid Mine Drainage Precipitates from Mining Effluents as Adsorbents of Organic Pollutants for Water Treatment.

Abstract

Acid mine drainage (AMD) is one of the main environmental problems associated with mining activity, whether the mine is operational or abandoned. In this work, several precipitates from this mine drainage generated by the oxidation of sulfide minerals, when exposed to weathering, were used as adsorbents. Such AMD precipitates from abandoned Portuguese mines (AGO, AGO-1, CF, and V9) were compared with two raw materials from Morocco (ClayMA and pyrophyllite) in terms of their efficiency in wastewater treatment. Different analytical techniques, such as XRD diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), N2 adsorption isotherms, and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) with Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX) were used to characterize these natural materials. The adsorption properties were studied by optimizing different experimental factors, such as type of adsorbent, adsorbent mass, and dye concentration by the Box–Behnken Design model, using methylene blue (MB) and crystal violet (CV) compounds as organic pollutants. The obtained kinetic data were examined using the pseudo-first and pseudo-second order equations, and the equilibrium adsorption data were studied using the Freundlich and Langmuir models. The adsorption behavior of the different adsorbents was perfectly fitted by the pseudo-second order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm. The most efficient adsorbent for both dyes was AGO-1 due to the presence of the cellulose molecules, with qm equal to 40.5 and 16.0 mg/g for CV and MB, respectively. This study confirms the possibility of employing AMD precipitates to adsorb organic pollutants in water, providing valuable information for developing future affordable solutions to reduce the wastes associated with mining activity. Abstract

Promising catalyst of cooper impregnated on natural material (CT) synthesized via wet impregnation method, in order to enhance the catalytic wet peroxide oxidation during the degradation of organic matter in a batch reactor under mild conditions. Three different percentages of copper metal (2.5, 5 and 7.5 %) incorporated into CT material which are referred as follows 2.5% Cu-CT, 5% Cu-CT and 7.5% Cu-CT were investigated in the oxidation catalytic of methyl green (MG) dye. The chemical composition, the morphology and the structure of raw CT and all prepared samples, were investigated by X-ray fluorescence, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to get a better understand concerning the catalytic activity behavior of Cu-CT catalyst. Different variable examined the catalytic activity of the samples obtained such as initial concentrations of dye, copper (Cu) loading, temperature and H2O2 effect was investigated to enhance the MG conversion. CWPO experiments showed that 2.5% Cu-CT catalysts have the maximum catalytic activity during the degradation of MG dye. The presence of copper on CT support ameliorates the hydroxyl radicals in the reaction medium after the contact with H2O2 thus enhanced the catalytic conversion of the CT pristine. The optimum conditions showing an important catalytic conversion of MG dye (95 %) at 2.5% of copper loading, 139.10-3 mol.L-1 H2O2, temperature of 40 °C and at pH 6.0 during 30 min as a reaction time., Moroccan Journal of Chemistry, Vol. 9, No 1 (2021)
