These proceedings include a collection of papers on a range of topics presented at the 12th World Congress on Engineering Asset Management (WCEAM) in Brisbane, 2 – 4 August 2017. Effective strategies are required for managing complex engineering assets such as built environments, infrastructure, plants, equipment, hardware systems and components. Following the release of the ISO 5500x set of standards in 2014, the 12th WCEAM addressed important issues covering all aspects of engineering asset management across various sectors including health. The topics discussed by the congress delegates are grouped into a number of tracks, including strategies for investment and divestment of assets, operations and maintenance of assets, assessment of assets'health conditions, risk and vulnerability, technologies, and systems for management of assets, standards, education, training and certification.

Peter TSE is the Director of the Smart Engineering Asset Management laboratory (SEAM) at the City University of Hong Kong and served as the Chair of WCEAM 2013 Organising Committee. Joseph MATHEW served as the Co-Chair of WCEAM 2013 is also WCEAM's General Chair. He is the Chief Executive Officer of Asset Institute, Australia.

Definitions, Concepts and Scope of Engineering Asset Management, the first volume in this new review series, seeks to minimise ambiguities in the subject matter. The ongoing effort to develop guidelines is shaping the future towards the creation of a body of knowledge for the management of engineered physical assets. Increasingly, industry practitioners are looking for strategies and tactics that can be applied to enhance the value-creating capacities of new and installed asset systems. Inclusion in the American Dream brings together leading scholars and policy experts on the topic of asset building, particularly as this relates to public policy. The typical American household accumulates most of its assets in home equity and retirement accounts, both of which are subsidized through the tax system. But the poor, for the most part, do not participate in these asset accumulation policies. The challenge is to expand the asset-based policy structure so that everyone is included.
