Awareness of, and debate about, harassment, assault, bullying and intimidation (HABI) in archaeology has grown in recent years, but the issue remains under-researched. Here, the authors present the first Europewide survey to evaluate HABI in archaeological environments, from field to laboratory and classroom. The survey covers 18 forms of HABI, collecting more than 1000 responses from archaeologists of 49 nationalities. A total of 82 per cent of respondents report at least one HABI experience. The authors conclude that HABI is endemic in European archaeology, being experienced by all genders and ages, in multiple settings and countries. Documenting these behaviours is a critical first step to eradicating them and to achieving equity and safety in the discipline. This study compared independently developed tools to measure work-related control, abuse, and sabotage. Interviewers administered the Work/School Abuse Scale (W/SAS; Riger, Ahrens, & Blickenstaff, 2000) to 40 welfare recipients, and a Work-Related Control, Abuse, and Sabotage Checklist (WORCASC) to a total of 162 welfare recipients, including the same 40 who answered the W/SAS. I report and compare results on W/SAS and WORCASC with 40 non-sheltered (i.e., not residing in a shelter) respondents and discuss instrument strengths and weaknesses. Measurement analyses provided preliminary empirical answers to questions about the relationship between battering and work. Findings confirmed the reliability of the two instruments, the extent to which they measure something distinct from physical abuse, and their association with relevant outcomes such as being written up, reprimanded, or losing pay at work. Measurement questions are salient in the context of debates over welfare reforms and efforts to reconcile the ways researchers, advocates, service providers, and policy makers understand and address the costs of taking a beating.

Investigators mailed surveys to 1500 certified basketball referees and received returns from 721, including 57 women. The average age of respondents was 41.9 years, and their average refereeing experience was 14.4 years. Ninety-eight referees (13.6%) reported that they had been assaulted at least once while officiating. Assaults were as common among female respondents as male respondents. Forty-five percent of the assaults were minor incidents, such as pushing, grabbing, or spitting, but 51% were more serious acts, such as punching, choking, or throwing objects at the referee. Players (41%) were the most common assailants, followed by parents (20%), coaches (19%), and fans (15%). Referees reported that alcohol was a factor in 20% of assaults that occurred in adult basketball leagues, but alcohol was not a significant factor at other levels of competition. There was a small but significant relationship between the seriousness of the assault and the seriousness of the consequence, but there was no punishment for 55% of the assailants. Physical assaults between family members or those in an intimate relationship are more likely to result in death if a firearm is involved. A survey of police reports of 23 fatal and 142 non-fatal family and intimate assaults found that those involving a firearm were 12 times more likely to result in death than those involving some other weapon. Assaults involving a firearm were three times more likely to result in death than those involving knives and 23 times more likely to result in death than those involving a blunt instrument or bodily force. Limiting access to firearms or making them harder to load and fire could reduce the number of fatal assaults among intimates. Guns could be kept locked up, unloaded, in a place separate from the ammunition. Individuals who have a history of abuse or are under a restraining order could be prohibited from buying a gun.
