Abstract Mangroves are essential tropical ecosystems nurturing a wide range of marine biodiversity and counteracting global warming by sequestering atmospheric carbon dioxide. Hence, the export mechanisms and fluxes of particulate and dissolved organic carbon and trace elements from mangroves directly influence coastal productivity, the global carbon cycle and thus global climate, which are, however, not well constrained. Here we find consistent radiogenic neodymium and hafnium isotopic compositions of porewater, sedimentary iron-manganese oxyhydroxides and coastal seawater, suggesting that the Amazonian mangrove belt supplies trace elements through porewater discharge, dissolution of iron-manganese oxyhydroxides and their interactions with seawater. Together, these processes supply 8.4 × 106 g yr-1 dissolved neodymium, equivalent to 64% of the total sources of neodymium to the Amazonian coastal seawater. Globally, mangrove systems along the continental margins contribute 6–9% of the net neodymium input to the ocean, which is similar to the contributions from atmospheric deposition. A contribution of this magnitude is potentially also the case for other trace elements, given the strong correlations between neodymium and iron (Pearson r = 0.92), and manganese (r = 0.75) concentrations across the entire river-ocean section, emphasizing the crucial role of mangrove system inputs in micro-nutrient cycling.

Abstract Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a chronic relapsing brain disorder characterized by an impaired ability to stop or control alcohol consumption despite adverse social, occupational, or health consequences. AUD affects nearly one-third of adults at some point during their lives, with an associated cost of approximately $249 billion annually in the U.S. alone. The effects of alcohol consumption are expected to increase significantly during the COVID-19 pandemic, with alcohol sales increasing by approximately 54%, potentially exacerbating health concerns and risk-taking behaviors. Unfortunately, existing pharmacological and behavioral therapies for AUD are associated with poor success rates, with approximately 40% of individuals relapsing within three years of treatment. Pre-clinical studies have shown that chronic alcohol consumption leads to significant changes in synaptic function within the dorsal medial striatum (DMS), one of the brain regions associated with AUD and responsible for mediating goal-directed behavior. Specifically, chronic alcohol consumption has been associated with hyperactivity of dopamine receptor 1 (D1) medium spiny neurons (MSN) and hypoactivity of dopamine receptor 2 (D1) MSNs within the DMS. Optogenetic, chemogenetic, and transgenic approaches have demonstrated that reducing the D1/D2 MSN signaling imbalance decreases alcohol self-administration in rodent models of AUD. Here, we present an electrical stimulation approach that uses ultra-low (≤ 1 Hz) frequency (ULF) spike-timing-dependent plasticity (STDP) in mouse models of AUD to reduce DMS D1/D2 MSN signaling imbalances by stimulating D1-MSN afferents into the GPi and ACC glutamatergic projections to the DMS in a time-locked stimulation sequence. Our data suggest that GPi/ACC ULF-STDP selectively decreases DMS D1-MSN hyperactivity leading to reduced alcohol consumption without evoking undesired affective behaviors using electrical stimulation rather than approaches requiring genetic modification. This work represents a step towards fulfilling the unmet need for a reliable method of treating severe AUD through cell-type-specific control with clinically available neuromodulation tools.

Objective: This study aims to assess the external validity of the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) in Swedish prenatal care as an indicator for alcohol-addiction disorders, and to characterize women with mismatched information in healthcare registers Design: This study was designed as a National register-based study. Setting: Sweden Participants: The study sample included 739,735 pregnancies over the period 2014–2020. Methods: Prospectively collected prenatal AUDIT screening in the Swedish Pregnancy register was linked to national health databases through individual identification number. The AUDIT score was dichotomized into < 6 points (low-risk use) and ≥ 6 points (hazardous use). Alcohol addiction disorders were defined by a diagnostic code in The Swedish National Patient Register or drugs dispensed for alcohol dependence in the Swedish Prescribed Drug Register. Primary Outcome Measures: The diagnostic properties of AUDIT were assessed based on sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV), positive likelihood ratio (LR+), negative likelihood ratio (LR-), and accuracy (proportion of true positive and true negative) for an AUDIT score of ≥ 6 points for alcohol disorders. Women with mismatched information in the register were characterized and assessed by multinominal logistic regression, using women with matched information in the registers for reference. Results: An alcohol-related disorder was recorded in 3.1%, while 25,770 (3.5%) had an AUDIT point ≥ 6. The diagnostic accuracy of the AUDIT ≥ 6 points for detection of an alcohol related disorder during a year prior to pregnancy was 95.7% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 95.7, 95.8), with a positive LR of 8.03 (95% CI: 7.5, 8.6). The sensitivity for detecting a pre-pregnancy alcohol related disorder was 33.0% (95% CI: 30.9, 35.1). Being young, nulliparous, of low education, and of Swedish origin increased the likelihood of being misclassified with the AUDIT. Prior psychiatric care was associated with false negatives, especially for women with neuropsychiatric disorders (odds ratio [OR]: 10.39, 95% CI: 9.89, 10.90). Conclusions: The accuracy of AUDIT in screening for alcohol disorders at a population-based level was high, but only identified one third of women with alcohol-related disorders when using a cut-off of six points criterion.

Abstract Whilst the exercise‐induced myokine interleukin‐6 (IL‐6) plays a beneficial role in cardiac structural adaptations, its influence on exercise‐induced functional cardiac outcomes remains unknown. We hypothesised that IL‐6 activity is required for exercise‐induced improvements in left ventricular global longitudinal strain (LV GLS). In an exploratory study 52 individuals with abdominal obesity were randomised to 12 weeks’ high‐intensity exercise or no exercise in combination with IL‐6 receptor inhibition (IL‐6i) or placebo. LV strain and volume measurements were assessed by cardiac magnetic resonance. Exercise improved LV GLS by −5.4% [95% CI: −9.1% to −1.6%] (P = 0.007). Nursing students require resilience to navigate the complexities of clinical practice. This characteristic is essential for managing demanding workloads, unpredictable patient situations, and emotional stressors while maintaining performance and well-being. Fostering resilience helps students develop the capacity to adapt to adversity, overcome setbacks, and remain committed to providing high-quality patient care. This qualitative study explores the challenges and supports influencing nursing students’ resilience during clinical education. Interviews with 28 Thai nursing students revealed two key themes: the “experience of vulnerability” and the “experience of meaningfulness”. The sub-themes of vulnerability included “navigating uncertainty”, “transcending professional struggles”, and “being exposed to diverse encounters”. The sub-themes of meaningfulness focused on restoring strength through social interactions and engaging in positive transformation. This study highlights the need for comprehensive support systems that address personal and professional vulnerabilities. Integrating caring theory principles could further enhance resilience by emphasizing compassionate care and fostering student empathy. This suggests that instructors and stakeholders can significantly impact student well-being by creating supportive environments built on collaboration, empathy, and mentorship, all of which are aligned with caring theory.

The Rya wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in Gothenburg, Sweden, is facing new and stricter effluent requirements and an increased predicted flow and population. A pilot study was done to evaluate drum filters as a possible space-efficient pretreatment compliment to the conventional pre-settling tanks. The pilot trials proved that the drum filter was able to reduce organic materials and phosphorus at different loads. The reduction was similar between two different pore sizes (100 and 300 μm) and the suspended solids (SS) effluent concentrations (35–200 mg/L) was similar to the conventional pre-settling tanks (40–130 mg/L). The two pore sizes had similar maximum flow capacities but the 300 μm was able to maintain that capacity for a longer time and higher influent SS concentrations. Chemical precipitation was able to increase the reduction of both SS and phosphorus. The drum filters could handle higher SS peaks during tunnel flush events while maintaining similar effluent SS concentrations as during normal operation. It became clear when analyzing the results that daily average data did not capture bypass events caused by momentaneous peaks in either influent SS or flow. Hourly data analysis is needed to correctly design and dimension a pre-filtration process with drum filters. Summary: Background: Lipid species are emerging as biomarkers for cardiometabolic risk in both adults and children. The genetic regulation of lipid species and their impact on cardiometabolic risk during early life remain unexplored. Methods: Using mass spectrometry-based lipidomics, we measured 227 plasma lipid species in 1149 children and adolescents (44.8% boys) with a median age of 11.2 years. We performed genome-wide association analyses to identify genetic variants influencing lipid species. Colocalisation and Mendelian randomisation (MR) analyses were performed to infer causality between lipid species and cardiometabolic outcomes. Findings: We identified 37 genome-wide significant loci for 52 lipid species, nine of which are previously unreported. Colocalisation analyses revealed that seven lipid loci shared genetic variants associated with adult cardiometabolic outcomes. One-sample MR analysis identified positive causal associations between ceramides and liver enzymes, sphingomyelins and hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), and phosphatidylethanolamines and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein in children and adolescents. Two-sample MR using adult-based summary statistics showed consistent direction of associations and indicated additional causal links, specifically between ceramides and elevated HbA1c levels, and phosphatidylinositols with elevated liver enzymes. Interpretation: These findings highlight the potential long-term implications of plasma lipid genetic determinants on cardiometabolic risk. Background: Patients with advanced ovarian cancer (AOC) undergoing surgery are often subjected to red blood cell (RBC) transfusions. Both anemia and RBC transfusion are associated with increased morbidity. The aim was to evaluate patient recovery after the implementation of patient blood management (PBM) strategies. Methods: This retrospective cohort study included 354 patients with AOC undergoing surgery at Skane University Hospital Lund, Sweden, between January 2016 and December 2021. The gradual implementation of PBM strategies included restrictive RBC transfusion, tranexamic acid as standard medication before laparotomies and intravenous iron administered to patients with iron deficiency. Severe complications were defined as Clavien-Dindo (CD) grade ≥ 3a. Logistic and linear regression analyses were used to evaluate the differences between three consecutive periods. Abstract Multifunctional structural batteries are of high and emerging interest in a wide variety of high‐strength and lightweight applications. Structural batteries typically use pristine carbon fiber as the negative electrode, functionalized carbon fiber as the positive electrode, and a mechanically robust lithium‐ion transporting electrolyte. However, electrochemical cycling of carbon fibre‐based positive electrodes is still limited to tests in liquid electrolytes, which does not allow for to introduction of multifunctionality in real terms. To overcome these limitations, structural batteries with a structural battery electrolyte (SBE) are developed. This approach offers massless energy storage. The electrodes are manufactured using economically friendly, abundant, cheap, and non‐toxic iron‐based materials like olivine LiFePO4. Reduced graphene oxide, renowned for its high surface area and electrical conductivity, is incorporated to enhance the ion transport mechanism. Furthermore, a vacuum‐infused solid‐liquid electrolyte is cured to bolster the mechanical strength of the carbon fibers and provide a medium for lithium‐ion migration. Electrophoretic deposition is selected as a green process to manufacture the structural positive electrodes with homogeneous mass loading. A specific capacity of 112 mAh g−1 can be reached at C/20, allowing the smooth transport of Li‐ion in the presence of SBE. The modulus of positive electrodes exceeded 80 GPa. Structural battery‐positive half‐cells are demonstrated across various mass‐loadings, enabling them to be tailored for a diverse array of applications in consumer technology, electric vehicles, and aerospace sectors.

Abstract Genotype by environment interactions (G × E) are frequently observed in herbage production. Understanding the underlying biological mechanisms is important for achieving stable and predictive outputs across production environments. The microbiome is gaining increasing attention as a significant contributing factor to G × E. Here, we focused on the soil microbiome of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) grown under field conditions and investigated the soil microbiome variation across different ryegrass varieties to assess whether environmental factors, such as seasonality and nitrogen levels, affect the microbial community. We identified bacteria, archaea, and fungi operational taxonomic units (OTUs) and showed that seasonality and ryegrass variety were the two factors explaining the largest fraction of the soil microbiome diversity. The strong and significant variety-by-treatment-by-seasonal cut interaction for ryegrass dry matter was associated with the number of unique OTUs within each sample. We identified seven OTUs associated with ryegrass dry matter variation. An OTU belonging to the Solirubrobacterales (Thermoleophilales) order was associated with increased plant biomass, supporting the possibility of developing engineered microbiomes for increased plant yield. Our results indicate the importance of incorporating different layers of biological data, such as genomic and soil microbiome data to improve the prediction accuracy of plant phenotypes grown across heterogeneous environments.

Abstract Among micro-scale imaging technologies of materials, X-ray micro-computed tomography has evolved as most popular choice, even though it is restricted to limited field-of-views and long acquisition times. With recent progress in small-angle X-ray scattering these downsides of conventional absorption-based computed tomography have been overcome, allowing complete analysis of the micro-architecture for samples in the dimension of centimetres in a matter of minutes. These advances have been triggered through improved X-ray optical elements and acquisition methods. However, it has not yet been shown how to effectively transfer this small-angle X-ray scattering data into a numerical model capable of accurately predicting the actual material properties. Here, a method is presented to numerically predict mechanical properties of a carbon fibre-reinforced polymer based on imaging data with a voxel-size of 100 μm corresponding to approximately fifteen times the fibre diameter. This extremely low resolution requires a completely new way of constructing the material’s constitutive law based on the fibre orientation, the X-ray scattering anisotropy, and the X-ray scattering intensity. The proposed method combining the advances in X-ray imaging and the presented material model opens for an accurate tensile modulus prediction for volumes of interest between three to six orders of magnitude larger than those conventional carbon fibre orientation image-based models can cover.

Novel tests of semantic memory (SM)--for example, memory for news events (NE; news facts) or famous personalities--are useful for estimating the severity of retrograde amnesia. Individuals with mild cognitive impairment exhibit relatively intact SM/language on traditional neuropsychological tests but exhibit consistent impairment on novel tests of SM, suggesting novel SM tests are dissimilar from traditional SM tests. To identify the relationship between NE memory and traditional cognitive measures, older adults (N = 51) completed a traditional neuropsychological battery and the Retrograde Memory News Events Test (RM-NET; a new test that robustly measures NE memory across the adult life span with high temporal resolution), and the relationship between performance on these tests was examined. Total RM-NET scores were more closely aligned with episodic memory scores than SM scores. The strength of the association between NE scores and episodic memory scores decreased as the age of NE memory increased. Tests of news events appear to reflect performance on traditional tests of episodic memory rather than SM, especially when recent news events are tested.

The national calibration of Eurocode load model 1 (LM1) for road bridges was made by a calibration of the load effects of LM1 against the corresponding load effects of a former load model used in Finland. Due to the increased gross vehicle weights in legislation, a national calibration of LM1 was necessary and the stochastic simulation was needed. The aim of this study is to generate a traffic model together with a predictive model for simulation purposes by using and combining long-time monitoring data measured on a road network in different surveys. In this paper, the performance of the predictive model of increases in axle loads and gross vehicle weights is evaluated against short-term bridge weight in motion (BWIM) measurements. The results achieved with a simulation can be used to gain more information of statistical parameters and the evolution of load effects caused on bridges by road traffic in Finland. The simulation model presented in this study served as a basis for updated national calibration of load model LM1. The follow-up comparison between predictive model and traffic monitoring shows the suitability of the estimation of the evolution of traffic loads and also necessity of the raise of LM1.
