An edible coating is one method that could be utilized in preserving and coating on fruits. The utilization of gadung (Dioscorea hispida Dennst) starch as a raw material in edible coating making can be used as an alternative renewable raw material due to of high starch content and its potential still not been utilized optimally. This study has been evaluated the influences of hydrocolloids and plasticizers contents of the mixture to produce proper tensile strength and elongation of the coating produced. The quality and characterization of edible coating have been evaluated using weight loss test, thickness test, elongation test, tensile strength test and oxygen permeability test. The gadung starch edible coating was shown to be effective in tomato fruit preserved until 21 days. Mechanical properties of edible coating were obtained the tensile strength ranging from 5.76 to 7.03 kgf.mm-2, elongation ranging from 13.57 - 38.56%, thickness ranging from 0.01 - 0.05 mm and optimum oxygen permeability of 3.739 g.m-2.h-1 by adding of the CMC of 1% and glycerol of 10%.

Solid nanocatalyst derived from oil-palm empty fruit bunches (OP-EFB) fiber was successfully synthesized and its application for biodiesel production was investigated. The OPEFB was treated by burning, milling and heating methods to generate ashes in a nanoparticle size. The nanoparticle palm-bunch ash was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and x-ray diffraction (XRD). The effects of the calcination temperature and catalyst amounts for transesterification reactions were investigated. XRD analysis of palm bunch ash exhibited that the highest composition of peaks characteristic were potassium oxide (K2O). SEM analysis showed that the nano palm bunch ash have a particle size ranging of 150-400 nm. The highest conversion of palm-oil to biodiesel reach to 97.90% was observed by using of palm bunch ash nanocatalyst which heated at 600degC, 3 h reaction time and 1% catalyst amount. Reusability of palm bunch ash catalysts was also examined. It was found that of its high active sites, reusable solid catalyst was obtained by just heating of palm bunch ash. It has a capability to reduce not only the amount of catalyst consumption but also reduce the reaction time of transesterification process.

In Indonesia, production of citral oil from lemon grass (Cymbopogon Cytratus) is done by a traditional technique whereby a low yield results. To improve the yield, an appropriate extraction technology is required. In this research, a steam-water distillation technique was applied to extract the essential oil from the lemongrass. The effects of sample particle size and bed volume on yield and quality of citral oil produced were investigated. The drying and refining time of 2 hours were used as fixed variables. This research results that minimum citral oil yield of 0.53% was obtained on sample particle size of 3 cm and bed volume of 80%, whereas the maximum yield of 1.95% on sample particle size of 15 cm and bed volume of 40%. The lowest specific gravity of 0.80 and the highest specific gravity of 0.905 were obtained on sample particle size of 8 cm with bed volume of 80% and particle size of 12 cm with bed volume of 70%, respectively. The lowest refractive index of 1.480 and the highest refractive index of 1.495 were obtained on sample particle size of 8 cm with bed volume of 70% and sample particle size of 15 cm with bed volume of 40%, respectively. The solubility of the produced citral oil in alcohol was 70% in ratio of 1:1, and the citral oil concentration obtained was around 79%.

This paper reports the evaluation of La-NaTaO3 photocatalyst performance in producing hydrogen from water-glucose solution. The main goal of the studies is to investigate the influence of glucose as a sacrificial reagent on the photocatalytic efficiency in water splitting reactions under ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. Photocatalyst has been fabricated via sol-gel method and being confirmed using x-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Nickel loaded La-NaTaO3 photocatalyst are prepared by impregnation method. It was observed that the prepared photocatalysts displayed particle sizes in the 30-250 nm range with orthorhombic structure. Their photocatalytic activity for hydrogen production via water splitting was conducted in a Pyrex glass reactor under UV light irradiation. The aqueous solution contained glucose employed as a renewable organic scavenger. A significant improvement in hydrogen production was observed in glucose-water mixtures and NiO loaded photocatalyst. The prepared La-NaTaO3 showed that the highest activity for hydrogen generation of 35.1 mmol h-1.g-1 was obtained at 0.10 mol.L-1 glucose and 0.3 wt.% NiO. This suggests the important role played by the glucose as electron donor and loading nickel on La-NaTaO3 as a cocatalyst increasing electron storage and suppressing electron-hole recombination.
