Abstract

Despite major advances in artificial intelligence (AI) for medicine and healthcare, the deployment and adoption of AI technologies remain limited in real-world clinical practice. In recent years, concerns have been raised about the technical, clinical, ethical and legal risks associated with medical AI. To increase real world adoption, it is essential that medical AI tools are trusted and accepted by patients, clinicians, health organisations and authorities. This work describes the FUTURE-AI guideline as the first international consensus framework for guiding the development and deployment of trustworthy AI tools in healthcare. The FUTURE-AI consortium was founded in 2021 and currently comprises 118 inter-disciplinary experts from 51 countries representing all continents, including AI scientists, clinicians, ethicists, and social scientists. Over a two-year period, the consortium defined guiding principles and best practices for trustworthy AI through an iterative process comprising an in-depth literature review, a modified Delphi survey, and online consensus meetings. The FUTURE-AI framework was established based on 6 guiding principles for trustworthy AI in healthcare, i.e. Fairness, Universality, Traceability, Usability, Robustness and Explainability. Through consensus, a set of 28 best practices were defined, addressing technical, clinical, legal and socio-ethical dimensions. The recommendations cover the entire lifecycle of medical AI, from design, development and validation to regulation, deployment, and monitoring. FUTURE-AI is a risk-informed, assumption-free guideline which provides a structured approach for constructing medical AI tools that will be trusted, deployed and adopted in real-world practice. Researchers are encouraged to take the recommendations into account in proof-of-concept stages to facilitate future translation towards clinical practice of medical AI.

6. Learning English Language through Literature: Insights from a Survey at University Level in Bangladesh

Abstract

This study intends to focus on the application of English literature in developing four language skills and language areas like vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation of undergraduate English learners in Bangladesh. The study also pays attention to the role of different genres of literature (i.e. poetry, short fiction, drama and novel) in the way of language teaching-learning process. Data were collected from university students and teachers through qualitative approach. The study revealed that respondents enjoyed learning English language through literature which played a significant role in developing four skills. Moreover, by reading literature, they have got interesting resources with authentic context which have provided a strong motivation for language learning. Literature readers can use authentic models for the norms of language use. It helps to enrich vocabulary and develop analytical and interpretive skills of a learner. In addition, reading literature in native languages was helpful to understand the inner meaning for the respondents. Most of them opined that, grammatical competence would be a prevalent factor to understand literature. They agreed that without having basic knowledge on grammar, a learner might face difficulties to learn a particular language thoroughly. Hence, they identified literature as a potential tool for communicative language teaching approach.

19. Impact of In-Service Training on English Teachers' Classroom Practice at Primary Level

Abstract

Teacher is one of the best teaching tools to attain, ensure and sustain the quality of education. For this, teachers have to be trained. The trainings include both pre-service and in-service training for professional development. This study focused on the impact of in-service training (cluster meeting) on English teachers' classroom practice at the English in Action intervention schools. This research was qualitative in nature. For the convenience of the research and conducting this study, the researcher mainly collected open-ended data from the respondents. Two cluster meetings were attended and observed. From those meetings, five teachers were selected purposively and finally three English classes of each of those teachers were observed. After classroom observation those teachers were interviewed individually and Focus group discussions were conducted with the students. The cluster meetings had multifaceted objectives which provided them with ideas for warming up, reviewing and reflecting, micro teaching and extending activities for improving teaching and learning capacities of teachers. The meetings fulfilled approximately 80% of their needs, especially in terms of solving classroom problems through sharing practical experiences and disseminating knowledge. Respondent teachers learnt many new things in the cluster meetings like, giving instruction in English, playing games, using teaching aids and writing paragraph by mind mapping. After being trained, respondents applied and implemented new ideas and methods in their classrooms. Now they use audio and posters, which help students learn quickly and speak English without difficulty. A majority of the respondent teachers faced some problems in the classroom while using audio.

Abstract

Dye‐sensitized solar cell (DSSC) is a potential low‐cost solar energy conversion device that is simple to fabricate with low cost than traditional silicon‐based solar cells. The development of DSSC is hampered by the limitations of using ZnO‐based photoanodes for a number of reasons (e.g., charge recombination, efficiency and expensive method). Photoanode material is one of the crucial components in DSSC, which plays a vital role in overall device performance, and the improvement of photoanode materials is needed. This work is focused to improve the overall performance of DSSCs with reducing problem by incorporating a dopant into ZnO semiconductor material as photoanode. Pristine and silver‐doped zinc oxide (Ag‐ZnO) photoanodes with various weight percentages of Ag (2, 3 and 4 wt%) were prepared by a facile, cost‐effective and quick green‐modified–solvothermal method with diethylamine (precipitating agent) and fig leaf extract (capping agent). The structural, crystalline nature, morphological and optical properties of prepared nanomaterials were analysed using X‐ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE‐SEM) and UV–Vis spectrophotometry. The results revealed that the crystallite size of pristine and Ag‐ZnO with 2, 3 and 4 wt% of Ag decreased from 85 to 21 nm by increasing the percentage of Ag. The surface roughness decreased with increasing the weight percentage of Ag, and there is no big change in their morphology. The energy band gaps (Eg) of pristine and Ag‐ZnO with 2%, 3% and 4% Ag determined by Tauc plot were 2.55, 3.05, 3.09 and 3.17 eV, respectively. Among the pristine and Ag‐doped ZnO fabricated devices, the photovoltaic measurements of 4% Ag‐ZnO exhibited superior performance reaching the highest efficiency of 2.25% with a short‐circuit current density (JSC) of ~5.8 mA/cm2, an open‐circuit voltage (VOC) of ~810 mV and a fill factor (FF) of ~0.54, which might be due to large optical band gap, better conductivity, reduced recombination rate and enhanced dye adsorption.
