The fate of phosphorus (P) in the eco-system is strongly affected by the interaction of phosphates with soil components and especially reactive soil mineral surfaces. As a consequence, P immobilization occurs which eventually leads to P inefficiency and thus unavailability to plants with strong implications on the global food system. A molecular level understanding of the mechanisms of the P binding to soil mineral surfaces could be a key for the development of novel strategies for more efficient P application. Much experimental work has been done to understand P binding to several reactive and abundant minerals especially goethite (α-FeOOH). Complementary, atomistic modeling of the P-mineral molecular systems using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations is emerging as a new tool in environmental science, which provides more detailed information regarding the mechanisms, nature, and strength of these binding processes. The present study characterizes the binding of the most abundant organic phosphates in forest soils, inositol hexaphosphate (IHP), and glycerolphosphate (GP), to the 100 diaspore (α-AlOOH) surface plane. Here, different molecular models have been introduced to simulate typical situations for the P-binding at the diaspore/water interface. For all models, quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) based MD simulations have been performed to explore the diaspore–IHP/GP–water interactions. The results provide evidence for the formation of monodentate (M) and bidentate (B) motifs for GP and M and as well as two monodentate (2M) motifs for IHP with the surface. The calculated interaction energies suggest that GP and IHP prefer to form the B and 2M motif, respectively. Moreover, IHP exhibited stronger binding than GP with diaspore and water. Further, the role of water in controlling binding strengths via promoting of specific binding motifs, formation of H-bonds, adsorption and dissociation at the surface, as well as proton transfer processes is demonstrated. Finally, the P-binding at the 100 diaspore surface plane is weaker than that at the 010 plane, studied previously (Ganta et al., 2019), highlighting the influential role of the coordination number of Al atoms at the top surface of diaspore.

The higher education ecosystem has been impacted significantly by the outbreak of the coronavirus (COVID-19), creating uncertainty regarding the future of higher education (HE). The coronavirus has compounded the challenges the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is facing in actively producing knowledge capital. This article collects evidence from current scholarly literature regarding the newly emerging skills and jobs needed for building a knowledge society in the UAE. This article explores how higher education in the UAE has transformed its role and its modes of delivery in response to the coronavirus pandemic and, additionally, offers recommendations for how to address these challenges while moving towards a knowledge society. The recommendations coming out of this study are multifaceted, along three main lines: (1) maximising the research potential of the UAE's HEIs by building partnerships between public and private sectors; (2) embracing technology in higher education; (3) customising curricula, course delivery, and assessment by adopting online education models; and (4) making lifelong learning accessible and affordable for all citizens. By cultivating institutions that are responsive to the changing needs of the labour market, the UAE and its citizens are poised to come out of the pandemic with a transformed higher education system.

This article compares the private higher education (HE) systems in Germany and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). We examine the historical, political, and demographic contexts of private universities in both countries, as well as the role of the state in regulating and shaping the private HE sector. We then explore the interrelation of the public and private HE sectors in Germany and the UAE, with a focus on how competitive and market forces, as well as state regulation, affect the HE system. Finally, we reflect on the homogenising and differentiating drivers that contribute to explaining the private HE landscape in both countries. We use neo-institutionalist approach to identify different varieties of isomorphism in the two countries. Even though the growth and shape of the private higher education sector in both countries reflect international normative, mimetic and coercive pressures, our study suggests that the development of the private sector is moderated by country-specific historical developments as well as by political contexts that accelerate or slow down market dynamics.

Abstract Background Dementia is a pressing problem for families and society. In 2019, a total of 57.4 million people worldwide were estimated to be living with dementia, and this number will almost double every 20 years, especially in Africa and the Middle East. This study aimed to investigate knowledge about dementia among the Egyptian population. A cross-sectional online survey was conducted among a sample of adult Egyptians using a socio-demographics data sheet and a designed dementia knowledge questionnaire. Results Nearly one-third (33.4%) had a poor knowledge score. The items most often answered incorrectly were the sudden onset of cognitive problems as characteristic of dementia (59.3%). The highest percentage of good knowledge was in the manifestations and prevention domains (62.20% and 67.18%, respectively). On the other hand, the lowest rate of good knowledge was in the treatment and life impact domains (35.23% and 25.70%, respectively). Knowledge of the interaction between inorganic and organic phosphates with soil minerals is vital for improving soil P-fertility. To achieve an in-depth understanding, we combined adsorption experiments and hybrid ab initio molecular dynamics simulations to analyze the adsorption of common phosphates, i.e., orthophosphate (OP), glycerolphosphate (GP) and inositolhexaphosphate (IHP), onto the 100 surface plane of goethite. Experimental adsorption data per mol P-molecule basis fitted to the Freundlich model show the adsorption strength increases in the order GP < OP < IHP, and IHP adsorption being saturated faster followed by GP and OP. Modeling results show that OP and GP form stable monodentate (M) and binuclear bidentate (B) motifs, with B being more stable than M, whereas IHP forms stable M and 3M motifs. Interfacial water plays an important role through hydrogen bonds and proton transfers with OP/GP/IHP and goethite. It also controls the binding motifs of phosphates with goethite. Combining both experimental and modeling results, we propose that the B motif dominates for OP, whereas GP forms M and IHP forms a combination of M and 3M motifs. The joint approach plausibly explains why IHP is the predominant organically bound P form in soil. This study could be considered as a preliminary step for further studies for understanding the mechanisms of how microbes and plants overcome strong IHP–mineral binding to implement the phosphate groups into their metabolism.

Today’s fertilizers rely heavily on mining phosphorus (P) rocks. These rocks are known to become exhausted in near future, and therefore effective P use is crucial to avoid food shortage. A substantial amount of P from fertilizers gets adsorbed onto soil minerals to become unavailable to plants. Understanding P interaction with these minerals would help efforts that improve P efficiency. To this end, we performed a molecular level analysis of the interaction of common organic P compounds (glycerolphosphate (GP) and inositol hexaphosphate (IHP)) with the abundant soil mineral (goethite) in presence of water. Molecular dynamics simulations are performed for goethite–IHP/GP–water complexes using the multiscale quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics method. Results show that GP forms monodentate (M) and bidentate mononuclear (B) motifs with B being more stable than M. IHP interacts through multiple phosphate groups with the 3M motif being most stable. The order of goethite–IHP/GP interaction energies is GP M < GP B < IHP M < IHP 3M. Water is important in these interactions as multiple proton transfers occur and hydrogen bonds are formed between goethite–IHP/GP complexes and water. We also present theoretically calculated infrared spectra which match reasonably well with frequencies reported in literature.

Abstract Background Effective medication adherence is vital for managing acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and enhancing patient well-being. This study aimed to evaluate medication adherence levels and associated factors among AMI patients using standardized assessment tools. Methods Employing a cross-sectional descriptive design, the study involved 210 patients diagnosed with acute myocardial infarction. Participants completed the General Medication Adherence Scale (GMAS), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), and provided socio-demographic details. Results The study revealed partial adherence to medications among AMI patients, with mean scores of 24.89 (± 3.64) out of 33. Notably, good adherence was observed in non-adherence due to patient behavior (mean ± SD = 11.8 ± 2.3 out of 15) and additional disease burden (mean ± SD = 8.65 ± 2.21 out of 12), while partial adherence was noted in non-adherence due to financial constraints (mean ± SD = 4.44 ± 1.34 out of 6). Patients reported mild anxiety (mean ± SD = 8.38 ± 2.81) and no depressive symptoms (mean ± SD = 7.43 ± 2.42). Multiple linear regression analysis indicated that employed status, younger age, shorter duration of MI, lower anxiety, and depression levels were associated with higher medication adherence. However, factors such as monthly income, gender, educational level, and marital status did not predict medication adherence. Conclusion The study highlights the significance of addressing anxiety and depression levels and considering socio-demographic factors when designing interventions to enhance medication adherence among AMI patients. Further research is needed to explore additional determinants of medication adherence and develop tailored interventions to improve patient outcomes post-AMI.

Introduction: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a common disease burdened with significant morbidity and mortality. Despite the substantial number of new available drug treatments, adherence to therapy and adverse drug reactions (ADRs) are the major constraint in the management of this disease. We evaluated the use, the adherence, and the safety of antidiabetic drugs in patients with T2DM. Methods: We performed an observational, retrospective, multicenter study on medical records of outpatients referred to general practitioners in Catanzaro (Calabria, Italy). Drug adherence was measured considering the packages of antidiabetic drugs prescribed at the time of admission, after three months, and 1 year later. ADRs were evaluated using the Naranjo probability scale. Collected data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences. Results: During the study, we evaluated 12,170 medical records of seven general practitioners. The most prescribed drug was metformin alone (28.4%) or with other oral antidiabetics (19.6%) and then insulin (n: 354; men 190, women 164). Logistic regression showed an association between T2DM less than or equal to 5 years and low adherence (p = 0.023). During the study, we recorded 26 ADRs that were correlated with sex (women) and insulin treatment. Conclusions: this real-life study shows that patients with T2DM have a high adherence, probably related to their having a low number of ADRs.

Abstract Background Chickpea is a key pulse crop grown in the spring in dryland regions. The cold resistance potential of chickpeas allows for the development of genotypes with varying sowing dates to take advantage of autumn and winter rainfall, particularly in dryland regions. In this study, we assessed grain yield, plant height, 100-seed weight, days to maturity, and days to flowering of 17 chickpea genotypes in five autumn-sown dryland regions from 2019 to 2021. Additionally, the response of selected chickpea genotypes to cold stress was examined at temperatures of -4 °C, 4 °C, and 22 °C by analyzing biochemical enzymes. Results Mixed linear model of ANOVA revealed a significant genotype × environment interaction for all traits measured, indicating varying reactions of genotypes across test environments. This study reported low estimates of broad-sense heritability for days to flowering (0.34), days to maturity (0.13), and grain yield (0.08). Plant height and seed weight exhibited the highest heritability, with genotypic selection accuracies of 0.73 and 0.92, respectively. Moreover, partial least square regression highlighted the impactful role of rainfall during all months except of October, November, and February on grain yield and its interaction with environments in autumn-planted chickpeas. Among the genotypes studied, G9, G10, and G17 emerged as superior based on stability parameters and grain yield. In particular, genotype G9 stood out as a promising genotype for dryland regions, considering both MTSI and genotype by yield*trait aproaches. The cold assay indicated that − 4 °C is crucial for distinguishing between susceptible and resistant genotypes. The results showed the important role of the enzymes CAT and GPX in contributing to the cold tolerance of genotype G9 in autumn-sown chickpeas. Conclusions Significant G×E for agro-morphological traits of chickpea shows prerequisite for multi-trial analysis. Chickpea`s direct root system cause that monthly rainfall during plant establishment has no critical role in its yield interaction with dryland environment. Considering the importance of agro-morphological traits and their direct and indirect effects on grain yield, the utilization of multiple-trait stability approches is propose. Evaluation of chickpea germplasm reaction against cold stress is necessary for autumn-sowing. Finally, autumn sowing of genotype FLIP 10–128 C in dryland conditions can led to significant crop performance.

This study aimed to evaluate the xanthine oxidase (XO) inhibitory activities of seven compounds identified in the potent antioxidant ethyl acetate fraction of Ambrosia maritima L. using various computational tools. Physicochemical properties and density functional theory (DFT) analyses were performed. Subsequently, XO molecular docking was performed to identify the most promising leads. The water solubility of the compounds varied among highly soluble, moderately soluble, and soluble compounds. Four compounds were predicted to have no mutagenic or tumorigenic effect. All compounds were found to have lower binding energies than the oxypurinol standard, indicating their potential as XO inhibitors. The predicted inhibitory interactions, physicochemical properties, and DFT results suggest that two of the compounds (Kaempferol-3-O-glucoside and escululin) are promising drugs or drug leads for the treatment of certain diseases related to increased levels of XO.

Abstract Background Cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) is a chronic progressive spinal compression that usually accompanies age-related degeneration of the cervical spine and represents one of the most common causes of spinal cord dysfunction. Surgical intervention is the foundation of management in symptomatic cases, but the approach of choice is constantly contentious. The aim of this study is to evaluate and appraise different surgical approaches for multilevel cervical spondylotic myelopathy (anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) with or without plating and laminectomy with and without fusion) regarding the perioperative data, clinical outcomes, complications rates and radiographic parameters. Results In this prospective study, sixty patients in four matched cohorts were followed up. The first group (n = 15) underwent ACDF only, the second group (n = 15) underwent ACDF with anterior plate, the third group (n = 15) underwent laminectomy alone, and the fourth group (n = 15) underwent laminectomy with lateral mass fusion. Patients were followed up for twelve-month duration using modified Japanese orthopedic score (mJOA), neck disability index (NDI), visual analogue scale (VAS) and short form 36 (SF-36) in addition to measurement of C2-C7 cobb`s angle to evaluate postoperative cervical sagittal alignment. All the four groups were associated with functional clinical improvement with no statistically significant differences between them. To date, the epigenetic signature of preeclampsia (PE) is not completely deciphered. Oxidative stress-responsive long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are deregulated in preeclamptic placenta; however, their circulating profiles and diagnostic abilities are still unexplored. We investigated serum redox-sensitive lncRNAs TUG1, H19, and NEAT1, and their target miR-29b/cystine/neutral/dibasic amino acids transporter solute carrier family 3, member 1 (SLC3A1) as potential non-invasive biomarkers of PE risk, onset, and severity. We recruited 82 patients with PE and 78 healthy pregnant women. We classified PE patients into early-onset (EOPE) and late-onset (LOPE) subgroups at a cut-off 34 gestational weeks and into severe and mild PE subgroups by blood pressure and proteinuria criteria. Bioinformatics analysis was employed to select lncRNAs/microRNA/target gene interactions. Serum H19, NEAT1, and SLC3A1 mRNA expression were reduced, meanwhile miR-29b levels were elevated, whereas there was no significant difference in TUG1 levels between PE patients and healthy pregnancies. Serum H19 levels were lower, whereas miR-29b levels were higher in EOPE versus LOPE. Serum miR-29b and H19 levels were higher in severe versus mild PE. ROC analysis identified serum H19, NEAT1, miR-29b, and SLC3A1 as potential diagnostic markers, with H19 (AUC = 0.818, 95%CI = 0.744–0.894) and miR-29b (AUC = 0.82, 95%CI = 0.755–0.885) were superior discriminators. Only H19 and miR-29b discriminated EOPE and severe PE cases. In multivariate logistic analysis, miR-29b and H19 were associated with EOPE, using maternal age and gestational age as covariates, while miR-29b was associated with severe PE, using maternal age as covariate. Studied markers were correlated with clinical and ultrasound data in the overall PE group. Serum H19 and TUG1 were negatively correlated with albuminuria in EOPE and LOPE, respectively. NEAT1 and SLC3A1 were correlated with ultrasound data in EOPE. Likewise, TUG1, miR-29b, and SLC3A1 showed significant correlations with ultrasound data in LOPE. Conclusively, this study configures SLC3A1 expression as a novel potential serum biomarker of PE and advocates serum H19 and miR-29b as biomarkers of EOPE and miR-29b as a biomarker of PE severity.

AbstractBreast cancer stands as the leading cause of cancer-related fatalities among women globally, presenting a diverse landscape of histological and molecular c characteristics, treatment response, and prognosis. This investigation examined the impact of soyasaponin IV, a natural product, on mice carrying Ehrlich’s ascites carcinoma (EAC), exploring its potential in blostering the hosts’ defense against cancer. The isolated compounds underwent scrutiny for their cytotoxic effects on breast cancer cell line, with Doxorubicin as the reference standard. Notably, Soyasaponin IV exhibited the highest cytotoxicity. Evaluation of its in vivo antitumor efficacy against EAC revealed a substantial reduction in tumor weight and volume, accompanied by improved histological features of tumor cells. EAC-induced abnormalities, including elevated levels of Malondialdehyde (MDA), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) were all shown to be upregulated by EAC, while glutathione (GSH), were mitigated in a dose-dependent manner by soyasaponin IV treatment. Soyasaponin IV emerged as a promising strategy for suppressing EAC by impeding the NF-κB and VEGF pathways.
