Purpose: The aim was to analyse the knowledge and awareness regarding Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) within the operational districts of two high-volume non-profit eye organisations in Uttar Pradesh. Challenges faced by beneficiaries and non-beneficiaries are also examined. Methods: A prospective cross-sectional survey from November 2021 to April 2022 was conducted across operational districts of organisations A and B. Cluster sampling was used to select participants in randomly selected villages with 200 or more households, within 10–15 km of existing vision centres. A semi-structured interview schedule was used to collect data. The means of AB-PMJAY indicators were estimated. Awareness was estimated as a summed score. Multivariate logistic regression was applied to check the effects of the socio-economic and socio-demographic factors on the awareness of AB-PMJAY for both organisations separately and together. Results: A total of 1151 participants were interviewed: 52.9% from the catchment area of organisation A and 47.1% from that of organisation B. From the catchment of organisations A and B, 82.6% and 22.9% participants, respectively, had heard of the scheme, mostly from family and friends. Whereas 43% interviewees from the catchment area of organisation A and 8.5% from that of organisation B had knowledge about at least one topic, only 8.5% and 2.8%, respectively, were knowledgeable about all topics. Village effect was found to be significant for most of the knowledge and awareness indicators in both catchments. Only 37.8% and 20.2% of the catchment from organisations A and B, respectively, were AB-PMJAY cardholders. Of the services availed, 50% were cataract surgery. Almost 40% of the applicants faced some challenges while securing the AB-PMJAY card and 9% while using the AB-PMJAY card. Family income was found to be the only common predictor of knowledge at both locations. Conclusion: Varied awareness and limited knowledge in catchment villages put the onus on community eyecare organisations to spread awareness in their catchment, which may increase the uptake and utilisation of the scheme.

BackgroundEye care organizations and professionals worldwide are increasingly focusing on bridging the gap between population health and medical practice. Recent advances in genomics and anthropology have revealed that most Indian groups trace their ancestry to a blend of 2 genetically distinct populations: Ancestral North Indians, who share genetic affinities with Central Asians, Middle Easterners, Caucasians, and Europeans; and Ancestral South Indians, genetically distinct from groups outside the Indian subcontinent. Studies conducted among North Indian populations can therefore offer insights that are potentially applicable to these diverse global populations, underscoring significant implications for global health. ObjectiveThe Bodhya Eye Consortium is a collaboration among 8 high-volume nonprofit eyecare organizations from across North India. The consortium aims to harness real-world data consistently and with assured quality for collaborative research. This paper outlines the formation of the consortium as a proposed model for controlled collaborative research among the leading eyecare organizations of North India. MethodsWe detail the creation and effective implementation of a consortium following a structured road map that included planning and assessment, establishing an exploratory task force, defining specialty areas, setting objectives and priorities, and conducting a SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats) analysis. Central to this process was a comprehensive data audit aimed at standardizing data collection across all participating organizations. ResultsThe consortium currently comprises 9 organizations, each represented in the governance structure by the Governing Council. Scientific standards for published research are established and overseen by the Scientific Committee, while the Conflict Resolution Committee manages any unresolved disputes. The consortium’s working groups, organized by various eyecare specialties, collaborate on research projects through virtual interactions. A foundational step in this process was the organizationwide data audit, which revealed that most organizations complied with accurate and standardized data collection practices. Organizations with deficiencies in data completeness developed action plans to address them. Subsequently, the consortium adopted data collection proformas, contributing to the publication of high-quality manuscripts characterized by low dropout rates. ConclusionsThe collaborative research conducted by the Bodhya Eye Consortium—a group of high-volume eyecare organizations primarily from North India—offers a unique opportunity to contribute to scientific knowledge across various domains of eyecare. By leveraging the established heterogeneity of anthropological and genomic origins within the population, the findings can be generalizable, to some extent, to European, Middle Eastern, and European American populations. This access to potentially invaluable, generalizable data has significant global health implications and opens possibilities for broader collaboration. The model outlined in this descriptive paper can serve as a blueprint for other health care organizations looking to develop similar collaborations for research and knowledge sharing.

Purpose: To report the types of keratoplasty and analyze trends over a period of two decades in central and northern India. Methods: This was a retrospective review of eye bank registries of six tertiary eye care centers located in central and north India from 2005 to 2021. The indications and various keratoplasty procedures were compared between 2005–2012 and 2013–2021 to analyze the trend. Results: A total of 13,223 corneal grafts were performed, of which therapeutic penetrating keratoplasty (TPK) (5719, 43.3%) was the most common procedure, followed by optical penetrating keratoplasty (OPK) (5528, 41.8%), Descemet stripping endothelial keratoplasty (DSEK) (1279, 9.7%), deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK) (376, 2.8%), Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK) (215, 1.6%), patch grafts (75, 0.6%), and keratoprostheses (31, 0.2%). Overall, OPK procedures decreased (−14.1%, P < 0.001), but TPK (+3.1%, P < 0.019), DSEK (+7.1%, P < 0.001), and DMEK (+1.9%, P < 0.001) procedures increased. Although there was an increasing trend in the use of DALK (+0.8%, P < 0.083) and keratoprostheses (+0.3%, P = 0.074) procedures, the trends were not statistically significant. Conclusion: In keeping with worldwide trends, an increasing trend in lamellar keratoplasties was observed in central and northern India during the past decade. The trend was significant for DSEK. However, as corneal ulcers and scars were the major indications for keratoplasty, TPK and OPK remained the most common procedures.

The current study was aimed to develop bacterial cellulose (BC) composites synergistically with polymer (Chitosan (chi)) and a nanomaterial (green synthesized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using an Azadirachta indica leaves extract). BC-Chi-Ag composites were developed through ex-situ composite development strategy and evaluated for their structural, biological and catalytic activities. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) displayed the impregnation of Chi and AgNPs in porous BC network. The composite formulation was further confirmed by the X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis which showed the presence of additional crystallinic peaks together with pure BC ones. Bactericidal assays of BC-Chi-Ag composites against modern pathogen including Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli depicted significant reduction in growth results compared to pure BC. Kapp value were found to be 0.37081 min−1 and 0.35108 min−1 for catalytic reduction of Rh B and 4-NP, respectively. High bactericidal and catalytic potentials of synthesized BC-Chi-Ag composites seriously justify their potential applications in medical and environmental fields.

Purpose: To determine the seasonality, clinical profile, and treatment outcome of Fusarium keratitis. Methods: A retrospective medical chart review of 97 patients with culture-proven Fusarium keratitis at a tertiary eye care institution from January 2018 to December 2019. Results: The median (SD) age at enrollment was 44.6 (16) years; 75 (79.8%) of them were male. Presence of infiltrate less than 4 mm2 at baseline indicated 4.4 times the odds of achieving final BCVA more than 20/60 (95% CI: 1.4–13.3; P = 0.008). The absence of surgical management indicated 8.1 times the odds of achieving final BCVA of more than 20/60 (95% CI: 0.9–71.5; P = 0.06). The visual acuity at presentation, duration between symptoms and presentation, history of ocular trauma, previous use of topical medications, and presence of hypopyon were not identified as significant predictors of final BCVA in the multivariable regression analysis. Conclusion: Smaller infiltrate size and absence of surgical management are the significant predictors of good visual outcome. Visual outcome of Fusarium keratitis is poor, and a significant number of patients did not respond to anti-fungal therapy and had to undergo surgeries. To the best of our knowledge, this is the largest case series on Fusarium keratitis to date.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess the performance of the tertiary centers (TCS) and vision centers (VCs) of the four organizations participating in this research, once the lockdown was lifted, and to compare it with the performance during the same period of the previous year. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study assessing eyecare utilization in the first 2 months after resumption of services post the lockdown in 2020 and comparing that across the same time period in 2019. Anonymized data containing basic demographic details, proportions of patient visits and their reasons, as well as referral information was collected. The drop percentage method was used, and P values were calculated using paired t-tests. Results: Four TCs and 60 VCs were included. Overall, outpatient attendance dipped 51.2% at TCs and 27.5% at VCs, across the 2 years. At both levels of care delivery, the percentage drop in females was more than that in males; however, the overall drop at VCs was less than that at TCs, for both sexes. Eyecare utilization in pediatric populations dropped significantly more than in adult populations, across the overall sample. There was no significant change in referrals for refractive error as a proportion of total outpatients, although there was a significant decline in the same for cataract and specialty treatment. Conclusion: VCs are valuable and successful model for eyecare delivery especially in the continued aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Purpose: This study was conducted to examine microbiological profile with their antibiotic sensitivity in cases of bacterial keratitis in north and central India to ensure appropriate use of antibiotics. Methods: The microbiology laboratory records of 228 patients with culture-proven bacterial keratitis from 1st January to 31st December 2019 were analyzed. Cultured bacterial isolates were subjected to antimicrobial susceptibility testing to antibiotics commonly used in the treatment of corneal ulcer. Chi-squared or Fisher's exact test were applied to check the significance of difference between the susceptibility levels of antibiotics. Results: The prevalence of Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa–induced keratitis was higher in northern India, whereas that by Streptococcus pneumoniae was more prevalent in central India. In central India, 100% of S. pneumoniae isolates were found to be sensitive to ceftriaxone compared to 79% in northern India (P = 0.017). In comparison to 67% of isolates from north India, 15% of S. aureus isolates from central India were found to be sensitive to ofloxacin (P = 0.009). Similarly, 23% of isolates from central India were found sensitive to amikacin compared to 65% of isolates from north India (P = 0.012). P. aeruginosa isolates from central India were found to be sensitive to ceftazidime in 63% of cases compared to 21% of isolates from north India (P = 0.034). Conclusion: Prevalence of bacteria and their susceptibility to antibiotics are not uniform across geography. Vancomycin remained the most effective drug in all gram-positive coccal infections. S. aureus susceptibility to amikacin was significantly greater in north India. P. aeruginosa showed less susceptibility as compared to previous reports.

Purpose: Low-concentration atropine is an emerging therapy for myopia progression, but its efficacy remains uncertain among high myopic children. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of low-concentration atropine eye drop (0.01%) in high myopic children. Methods: A non-randomized, parallel-group, longitudinal interventional cohort study. Myopic children were divided into two groups: (1) the intervention arm of children who received one drop of topical 0.01% atropine once a day at bedtime and (2) the control arm, in which enrolled children who were on observation only. Repeated measurements of spherical equivalent refractive errors (SERs) were performed at baseline and 1 and 2 years after treatment. Results: A total of 37 eyes were enrolled in the intervention arm (allocated to 0.01% atropine at year 1 follow-up) and 23 eyes in the control arm. After 1 year of 0.01% atropine therapy, the myopia progression was 0.15 ± 0.9 D in the intervention group versus 1.1 ± 1 D in the control group (P = 0.001). Similarly, after 2 years of treatment, the myopia progression was 0.3 ± 1.1 D in the intervention group versus 1.4 ± 1.1 D in the control group (P ≤ 0.001). Conclusion: Compared to no treatment, 0.01% atropine treatment had shown better effect on myopia progression in high myopic children.

In this research, a simple and green approach towards preparation of biogenic gold nanoparticles on cotton cloth (AuNPs-CC) was developed. It was found that the hydroxyl functional groups of the cellulose macromolecules, abundantly available in cotton, slowly reduced the Au ions to nanoparticles. To help accelerate the kinetic process of AuNPs formation, a Citrus limon juice concentrate was utilized. The samples were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and other spectroscopic methods. The FESEM images directly showed the ~22 nm size AuNPs attached to the cotton cloth fibers. The XPS and XRD confirmed the formation of biogenic AuNP over CC surface. The pristine-CC and AuNPs-CC were studied for their antibacterial properties using their different strains. Moreover, AuNPs-CC was used as a catalyst in the pollutants degradation (para- and ortho-nitrophenol) in their aqueous solutions. The AuNP-CC catalyzed the p-NP and o-NP reductions with high reaction rate constants. Moreover, the Citrus limon assisted synthesized AuNP-CC has antibacterial activities for pathogenic bacteria.

Purpose: The aim of the study is to identify risk factors, clinical characteristics, causative fungi, and treatment outcome of dematiaceous fungal keratitis in North India. Methods: Consecutive cases of culture-proven dematiaceous fungal keratitis between January 2012 and June 2017 were retrieved from the medical record department. Risk factors, clinical signs, and outcome were registered. Results: Eighty-three patients were included. Identified dematiaceous fungal organism were Curvularia sp. (n = 55/83; 66.3%), Alternaria sp. (n = 12/83; 14.5%), Ulocladium sp. (n = 5/83; 6%), Bipolaris sp. (n = 5/83; 6.1%), Scedosporium sp. (n = 3/83; 3.6%), Acremonium sp. (n = 2/83; 2.4%), and Epicoccum sp. (n = 1/83; 1.2%). Male preponderance was reported. The most common predisposing factor was corneal trauma (67.4%). In cases associated with corneal trauma due to vegetative matter, sugarcane was the most common cause. In all, 89% of the patients were more than 30 years of age. The median infiltrate size was 8 mm2. The median time of antifungal therapy was 4.2 weeks (interquartile range [IQR]: 1-25 weeks). Complications were seen in 14 (n = 14/65; 21.5%) patients. Complete resolution of dematiaceous fungal keratitis was present in 27 (n = 27/65; 41.5%) eyes. Conclusion: Curvularia sp. and Alternaria sp. were the predominant pathogenic genera causing dematiaceous fungal keratitis. Among the causative fungi, infections due to Scedosporium sp. were associated with the worst outcomes. Ulocladium sp. and Epicoccum sp. were also identified. Both the species are not reported previously as a causal organism of dematiaceous fungal keratitis from North India.

Purpose: To assess major causes of severe visual impairment (SVI)/blindness (BL) in children studying in schools for the blind in western Uttar Pradesh, India and the extent of inappropriate enrolment of children in blind schools. Methods: Students of five schools for the blind were examined in a tertiary care eye hospital. The anatomical sites and etiology for SVI/BL were recorded using the World Health Organization/Prevention of Blindness standard reporting form. Categorical variable were summarized using frequencies and percentages. Results: A total of 93 students were examined. Male/Female ratio was 3.4:1. The most common anatomical sites of SVI/BL were the whole globe (40.3%) and the cornea (26.4%). Postnatal or childhood causes were noted in 13.8% cases. Forty-one (56.9%) students had hereditary diseases which was most likely caused by chromosomal abnormalities. Three students were having an associated disability, one was deaf and mute, one was physically handicapped, and one was intellectually challenged. Fifty-four (58%) children were blind and 21 (22.6%) children had no visual impairment but were studying in schools for the blind. Conclusion: Schools for the blind should be screened routinely to reduce the incidence of misdiagnosed visual impairment. This will prevent inappropriate enrolment and will definitely help in reducing the social and economic burden of society and of the schools of blind too.

We report a case of a 46-year-old female who developed infectious crystalline keratopathy (ICK) after Descemet's stripping endothelial keratoplasty (DSEK). She underwent DSEK for pseudophakic corneal edema in her left eye. Ten weeks after the procedure, the patient presented with complaints of blurred vision, redness in eye, and ocular pain. Slit lamp examination revealed white nonsuppurative branching deep stromal infiltrate. Microscopic examination of the Gram-stained smear showed gram-positive cocci. Streptococcus viridans was isolated on cultures. Isolated organism was sensitive to linezolid. Based on antibiotic sensitivity report, fortified linezolid (0.2%) eye drop was started on hourly basis. After 10 weeks of topical fortified linezolid (0.2%) therapy, complete resolution of infiltrate with significant corneal scarring and vascularization was seen. Infectious crystalline keratopathy can occur after DSEK.

The leading role that is attributable to economic indicators like consumer confidence has been well documented in the literature for many developed nations. Moreover, the relationship between high frequency financial market data has been a common research topic for world economies. However, there is hardly any study that attempts to search for the possible functional relationship between consumer confidence and financial market variables. This paper is a simple attempt to link these two brands of literature by focusing on the relationship between financial market variables and consumer confidence index before the global crisis has started. We have two distinctive points. First, we derive separate consumer confidence indices for men and women by employing micro‐level consumer confidence data from an emerging market (Turkish CNBC‐e consumer confidence index) for the period of January 2003 ‐ January 2008. Second, employing this data set, we do not only check for the existence of a relationship between consumer confidence and financial market variables (such as interest rates, exchange rates and stock exchange index) but also focus on the possibility of gender response. We find evidence of gender response difference as throughout the period women are more pessimistic than men‐due probably to lower levels of wealth‐and respond less to changes in exchange rates than men‐due probably to lower purchasing power. Background: Congenital toxoplasmosis is a treatable, preventable disease, but untreated causes death, prematurity, loss of sight, cognition and motor function, and substantial costs worldwide., Objectives: We asked whether high performance of an Immunochromatographic-test (ICT) could enable accurate, rapid diagnosis/treatment, establishing new, improved care-paradigms at point-of-care and clinical laboratory., Methods: Data were obtained in 12 studies/analyses addressing: 1-feasibility/efficacy; 2-false-positives; 3-acceptability; 4-pink/black-line/all studies; 5-time/cost; 6-Quick-Information/Limit-of-detection; 7, 8-acute;-chronic; 9-epidemiology; 10-ADBio; 11,12-Commentary/Cases/Chronology., Findings: ICT was compared with gold-standard or predicate-tests. Overall, ICT performance for 1093 blood/4967 sera was 99.2%/97.5% sensitive and 99.0%/99.7% specific. However, in clinical trial, FDA-cleared-predicate tests initially caused practical, costly problems due to false-positive-IgM results. For 58 persons, 3/43 seronegative and 2/15 chronically infected persons had false positive IgM predicate tests. This caused substantial anxiety, concerns, and required costly, delayed confirmation in reference centers. Absence of false positive ICT results contributes to solutions: Lyon and Paris France and USA Reference laboratories frequently receive sera with erroneously positive local laboratory IgM results impeding patient care. Therefore, thirty-two such sera referred to Lyon's Reference laboratory were ICT-tested. We collated these with other earlier/ongoing results: 132 of 137 USA or French persons had false-positive local laboratory IgM results identified correctly as negative by ICT. Five false positive ICT results in Tunisia and Marseille, France, emphasize need to confirm positive ICT results with Sabin-Feldman-Dye-test or western blot. Separate studies demonstrated high performance in detecting acute infections, meeting FDA, CLIA, WHO REASSURED, CEMark criteria and patient and physician satisfaction with monthly-gestational-ICT-screening., Conclusions/significance: This novel paradigm using ICT identifies likely false positives or raises suspicion that a result is truly positive, rapidly needing prompt follow up and treatment. Herein, we demonstrate that using an ICT that meets WHO ASSURED-criteria identifying persons with/without antibody to Toxoplasma gondii in sera and whole blood with high sensitivity and specificity, is feasible to use in USA clinical practice. We find this new approach can help to obviate the problem of detection of false positive anti- T.gondii IgM results for those without IgG antibodies to T.gondii when this occurs in present, standard of care, predicate USA FDA cleared available assays. Thus, this accurate test facilitates gestational screening programs and a global initiative to diagnose and thereby prevent and treat T.gondii infection. This minimizes likelihood of false positives (IgG and/or IgM) while maintaining maximum sensitivity. When isolated IgM antibodies are detected, it is necessary to confirm and when indicated continue follow up testing in ∼2 weeks to establish seroconversion. Presence of a positive ICT makes it likely that IgM is truly positive and a negative ICT makes it likely that IgM will be a false positive without infection. These results create a new, enthusiastically-accepted, precise paradigm for rapid diagnosis and validation of results with a second-line test. This helps eliminate alarm and anxiety about false-positive results, while expediting needed treatment for true positive results and providing back up distinguishing false positive tests.

Background: The Nigerian Breast Cancer Study (NBCS) model is a new risk assessment tool developed for predicting risk of invasive breast cancer in Nigeria. Its applicability outside of Nigeria remains uncertain as it has not been validated in other sub-Saharan Africa populations., Methods: We conducted a case-control study among women with breast cancer and controls ascertained in Cameroon and Uganda from 2011 to 2016. Structured questionnaire interviews were performed to collect risk factor characteristics. The NBCS model, the Gail model, the Gail model for Black population, and the Black Women's Health Study model were applied to the Cameroon and Uganda samples separately. Nigerian as well as local incidence rates were incorporated into the models. Receiver-Operating Characteristic analyses were performed to indicate discriminating capacity., Results: The study included 550 cases (mean age 46.8 ± 11.9) and 509 controls (mean age 46.3 ± 11.7). Compared with the other three models, the NBCS model performed best in both countries. The discriminating accuracy of the NBCS model in Cameroon (age-adjusted C-index = 0.602; 95% CI, 0.542-0.661) was better than in Uganda (age-adjusted C-index = 0.531; 95% CI, 0.459-0.603)., Conclusions: These findings demonstrate the potential clinical utility of the NBCS model for risk assessment in Cameroon. Purpose of Review: Review work to create and evaluate educational materials that could serve as a primary prevention strategy to help both providers and patients in Panama, Colombia, and the USA reduce disease burden of Toxoplasma infections., Recent Findings: Educational programs had not been evaluated for efficacy in Panama, USA, or Colombia., Summary: Educational programs for high school students, pregnant women, medical students and professionals, scientists, and lay personnel were created. In most settings, short-term effects were evaluated. In Panama, Colombia, and USA, all materials showed short-term utility in transmitting information to learners. These educational materials can serve as a component of larger public health programs to lower disease burden from congenital toxoplasmosis. In the present study, we examined associations between circadian preference and psychiatric symptoms among 1,796 pregnant women from Lima, Peru. One quarter were classified as evening types. Compared to morning types, evening type pregnant women had increased odds of generalized anxiety (OR = 1.44; 95%CI: 1.12-1.86) and posttraumatic stress disorder (OR = 1.38; 95%CI: 1.07-1.78). Although there was a positive trend, evening chronotype was not significantly associated with elevated odds of depression (OR = 1.23; 95%CI: 0.94-1.61). Future studies are warranted to help understand the underlying behavioral, biological, and genetic pathways of these associations. Assessing circadian preference may help clinicians identify pregnant women at risk for psychiatric symptoms.

Purpose of Review: Review building of programs to eliminate Toxoplasma infections., Recent Findings: Morbidity and mortality from toxoplasmosis led to programs in USA, Panama, and Colombia to facilitate understanding, treatment, prevention, and regional resources, incorporating student work., Summary: Studies foundational for building recent, regional approaches/programs are reviewed. Introduction provides an overview/review of programs in Panamá, the United States, and other countries. High prevalence/risk of exposure led to laws mandating testing in gestation, reporting, and development of broad-based teaching materials about Toxoplasma. These were tested for efficacy as learning tools for high-school students, pregnant women, medical students, physicians, scientists, public health officials and general public. Digitized, free, smart phone application effectively taught pregnant women about toxoplasmosis prevention. Perinatal infection care programs, identifying true regional risk factors, and point-of-care gestational screening facilitate prevention and care. Introduction: Although transrectal ultrasound is routinely performed for imaging prostate lesions, colour Doppler imaging visualizing vascularity is not commonly used for diagnosis. The goal of this study was to measure vascular and echogenic differences between malignant and benign lesions of the prostate by quantitative colour Doppler and greyscale transrectal ultrasound., Methods: Greyscale and colour Doppler ultrasound images of the prostate were acquired in 16 subjects with biopsy-proven malignant or benign lesions. Echogenicity and microvascular flow velocity of each lesion were measured by quantitative image analysis. Flow velocity was measured over several cardiac cycles and the velocity-time waveform was used to determine microvascular pulsatility index and microvascular resistivity index. The Wilcoxon rank sum test was used to compare the malignant and benign groups., Results: Median microvascular flow velocity of the malignant lesions was 1.25 cm/s compared to 0.36 cm/s for the benign lesions. Median pulsatility and resistive indices of the malignant lesions were 1.55 and 0.68, respectively versus 6.38 and 1.0 for the benign lesions. Malignant lesions were more hypoechoic relative to the surrounding tissue, with median echogenicity of 0.24 compared to 0.76 for the benign lesions. The differences between the malignant and benign groups for each measurement were significant (p < 0.01)., Conclusion: Marked differences were observed in flow velocity, microvascular pulsatility, microvascular resistance, and echogenicity of prostate cancer measured with quantitative colour Doppler and greyscale ultrasound imaging. Background and Objective: Lung ultrasound is an inherently user-dependent modality that could benefit from quantitative image analysis. In this pilot study we evaluate the use of computer-based pleural line (p-line) ultrasound features in comparison to traditional lung texture (TLT) features to test the hypothesis that p-line thickening and irregularity are highly suggestive of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and can be used to improve the disease diagnosis on lung ultrasound., Methods: Twenty lung ultrasound images, including normal and COVID-19 cases, were used for quantitative analysis. P-lines were detected by a semiautomated segmentation method. Seven quantitative features describing thickness, margin morphology, and echo intensity were extracted. TLT lines were outlined, and texture features based on run-length and gray-level co-occurrence matrix were extracted. The diagnostic performance of the 2 feature sets was measured and compared using receiver operating characteristics curve analysis. Observer agreements were evaluated by measuring interclass correlation coefficients (ICC) for each feature., Results: Six of 7 p-line features showed a significant difference between normal and COVID-19 cases. Thickness of p-lines was larger in COVID-19 cases (6.27 ± 1.45 mm) compared to normal (1.00 ± 0.19 mm), P  < 0.001. Among features describing p-line margin morphology, projected intensity deviation showed the largest difference between COVID-19 cases (4.08 ± 0.32) and normal (0.43 ± 0.06), P  < 0.001. From the TLT line features, only 2 features, gray-level non-uniformity and run-length non-uniformity, showed a significant difference between normal cases (0.32 ± 0.06, 0.59 ± 0.06) and COVID-19 (0.22 ± 0.02, 0.39 ± 0.05), P  = 0.04, respectively. All features together for p-line showed perfect sensitivity and specificity of 100; whereas, TLT features had a sensitivity of 90 and specificity of 70. Observer agreement for p-lines (ICC = 0.65-0.85) was higher than for TLT features (ICC = 0.42-0.72)., Conclusion: P-line features characterize COVID-19 changes with high accuracy and outperform TLT features. Peripheral artery disease is often asymptomatic, and various imaging and nonimaging techniques have been used for assessment and monitoring treatments. This study is designed to demonstrate the ability of photoacoustic imaging to noninvasively determine changes in tissue oxygenation that occur in mice's hind limb skeletal muscle as they age. Mice from two age cohorts were scanned bilaterally with a pulsed laser. The photoacoustic signal was unmixed to generate a parametric map of estimated oxygen saturation and then overlaid on grayscale ultrasound images. Tissue oxygenation measured in young and old mice was compared. Photoacoustic imaging visually and quantitatively showed the decrease in skeletal muscle oxygenation that occurs with age. Percent tissue oxygenation decreased from 30.2% to 3.5% ( p < 0.05). This reduction corresponded to reduced fractional area of oxygenation, which decreased from 60.6% to 6.0% ( p < 0.05). The change in oxygenation capacity of the still active vascular regions was insignificant ( p > 0.05). Intrasubject, intra-, and interobserver comparisons showed low variability in measurements, exhibited by high regression and intraclass correlations exceeding 0.81 for all ages. The decrease in oxygenation detected by photoacoustic imaging paralleled the known oxygenation decrease observed in aging tissues, demonstrating that photoacoustic imaging can assess age-related changes in a mouse calf muscle. These intramuscular changes could potentially act as a strong diagnostic marker for peripheral artery disease. This study thus opens the doors for a novel, affordable, noninvasive method of evaluation free of radiation or exogenous material.

Degraded carrageenan derived from the red seaweed Eucheuma spinosum was given to Sprague-Dawley rats through the diet, in drinking water or by stomach tube for up to 24 months. Carrageenan-induced squamous cell carcinomas, adenocarcinomas and adenomas in the colorectum were observed. Some rats had metastases to the regional lymph nodes of squamous cell carcinomas. These results show that degraded carrageenan is carcinogenic to the colorectum of the rat.
