The final hardware modifications for tritium operation have been completed for the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor (TFTR) [Fusion Technol. 21, 1324 (1992)]. These activities include preparation of the tritium gas handling system, installation of additional neutron shielding, conversion of the toroidal field coil cooling system from water to a Fluorinert™ system, modification of the vacuum system to handle tritium, preparation, and testing of the neutral beam system for tritium operation and a final deuterium-deuterium (D-D) run to simulate expected deuterium-tritium (D-T) operation. Testing of the tritium system with low concentration tritium has successfully begun. Simulation of trace and high power D-T experiments using D-D have been performed. The physics objectives of D-T operation are production of ≈ 10 MW of fusion power, evaluation of confinement, and heating in deuteriumtritium plasmas, evaluation of α-particle heating of electrons, and collective effects driven by alpha particles and testing of diagnostics for confined a particles. Experimental results and theoretical modeling in support of the D-T experiments are reviewed. © 1994 American Institute of Physics.

Numerical models may represent a useful tool to estimate wave overtopping discharge. However, so far there is still little available literature on numerical modeling, especially on Boussinesq modeling. The paper analyses the ability of a BTM, Celeris, to predict wave overtopping at a vertical seawall with shallow foreshore, comparing numerical outcomes with physical results of an experimental campaign carried out at the University of Naples Federico II, Italy. The validation has shown that the model needs to be calibrated to avoid overestimation and obtain a reliable tool. In this paper we opted to calibrate the Manning coefficient, which acts as an additional dissipative term to limit overestimation and achieve accurate assessments.

We study some features of the transient probability distribution of a fractional M/ M/ ∞ queueing system. Such model is constructed as a suitable time-changed birth-death process. The fractional differential-difference problem is studied for the corresponding probability distribution and a fractional partial differential equation is obtained for the generating function. Finally, the interpretation of the system as an actual M/ M/ ∞ queue and as a M/M/1 queue with responsive server is given and some conditioned virtual waiting times are studied.

Degenerative mitral valve disease represents the most common cause of mitral regurgitation in industrialized countries. When left untreated, patients with severe degenerative mitral regurgitation show a poor clinical outcome. Conversely, a timely and appropriate correction provides a restored life expectancy and a good quality of life. Therefore, in this scenario, surgical mitral valve repair represents the gold standard of treatment. This review aims to analyze the indications, timing, and contemporary surgical techniques of mitral valve repair for degenerative mitral regurgitation. Moreover, the value of heart team approach and centers of excellence for mitral valve repair are also deeply discussed.

Context. Until recently, camera networks designed for monitoring fireballs worldwide were not fully automated, implying that in case of a meteorite fall, the recovery campaign was rarely immediate. This was an important limiting factor as the most fragile - hence precious - meteorites must be recovered rapidly to avoid their alteration. Aims. The Fireball Recovery and InterPlanetary Observation Network (FRIPON) scientific project was designed to overcome this limitation. This network comprises a fully automated camera and radio network deployed over a significant fraction of western Europe and a small fraction of Canada. As of today, it consists of 150 cameras and 25 European radio receivers and covers an area of about 1.5 × 10km. Methods. The FRIPON network, fully operational since 2018, has been monitoring meteoroid entries since 2016, thereby allowing the characterization of their dynamical and physical properties. In addition, the level of automation of the network makes it possible to trigger a meteorite recovery campaign only a few hours after it reaches the surface of the Earth. Recovery campaigns are only organized for meteorites with final masses estimated of at least 500 g, which is about one event per year in France. No recovery campaign is organized in the case of smaller final masses on the order of 50 to 100 g, which happens about three times a year; instead, the information is delivered to the local media so that it can reach the inhabitants living in the vicinity of the fall. Results. Nearly 4000 meteoroids have been detected so far and characterized by FRIPON. The distribution of their orbits appears to be bimodal, with a cometary population and a main belt population. Sporadic meteors amount to about 55% of all meteors. A first estimate of the absolute meteoroid flux (mag < -5; meteoroid size ≥∼1 cm) amounts to 1250/yr/10km. This value is compatible with previous estimates. Finally, the first meteorite was recovered in Italy (Cavezzo, January 2020) thanks to the PRISMA network, a component of the FRIPON science project., FRIPON was initiated by funding from ANR (grant N.13- BS05-0009-03), carried by the Paris Observatory, Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle, Paris-Saclay University and Institut Pythéas (LAM-CEREGE). 11. Universities and patent trolls: An empirical study of university patent infringement litigation in the United States

Universities underwent a radical change of paradigm in the last forty years. Since Bayh-Dole Act in 1980, they have been accused of having a growing interest in revenue generation activities such as overzealous patenting, participation in patent auctions and morally doubtful patent enforcement. On the point, some prominent scholars argue that the litigation behavior of universities should be monitored, considering the possible similarity with the so- called patent trolls. Patent trolls are a kind of non-practicing entities (NPEs) whose core business is litigate patents with lower quality almost at the end of their life, trying to maximize their revenues at the expense of the potential plaintiffs. While the harms to innovation made by patent trolls are well-known, the involvement of universities in litigation has not been explored by the literature from an empirically point of view. In this work, we collect data on patents held by universities at the United States and Trademark Office (USPTO) and data on infringement lawsuits filed by universities in the years 1990-2019 to study the characteristics of the litigated patents. We find that universities litigate their patents only sporadically (less than 0.4% of their patents have been used in infringement proceedings) and when the patents are particularly valuable. Moreover, we analyse the fields in which universities litigate, considering that trolls mainly ravage in the ICT sector. Our conclusion supports the idea that universities participating in litigation is a growing phenomenon which should be monitored, but their current behavior does not reflect the strategies of the litigation NPEs. Further research is needed to consider the whole universities' portfolio to assess which patents they choose to litigate and the evolution of their strategies over time. © 2021 18th International Conference on Scientometrics and Informetrics, ISSI 2021. - Abstract
Background. The BALLET study was an open-label, multicenter, expanded access study designed to allow treatment with everolimus plus exemestane in postmenopausal women with hormone receptor-positive metastatic breast cancer progressed following prior endocrine therapy. A post hoc analysis to evaluate if previous chemotherapy in the metastatic setting affects the safety profile of the combination regimen of everolimus and exemestane was conducted on the Italian subset, as it represented the major part of the patients enrolled (54%). Patients and Methods. One thousand one hundred and fiftyone Italian patients were included in the present post hoc analysis, which focused on two sets of patients: patients who never received chemotherapy in the metastatic setting (36.1%) and patients who received at least one chemotherapy treatment in the metastatic setting (63.9%). Results. One thousand one hundred and sixteen patients (97.0%) prematurely discontinued the study drug, and the main reasons reported were disease progression (39.1%), local reimbursement of everolimus (31.1%), and adverse events (AEs) (16.1%). The median duration of study treatment exposure was 139.5 days for exemestane and 135.0 days for everolimus. At least one AE was experienced by 92.5% of patients. The incidence of everolimus-related AEs was higher (83.9%) when compared with those that occurred with exemestane (29.1%), and the most commonly reported everolimus-related AE was stomatitis (51.3%). However, no significant difference in terms of safety related to the combination occurred between patients without and with chemotherapy in the metastatic setting. Conclusion. Real-life data of the Italian patients BALLET-related cohort were an adequate setting to state that previous chemotherapy did not affect the safety profile of the combination regimen of everolimus and exemestane.

The Oncologist 2017;22:1-8Implications for Practice: With the advent of new targeted agents for advanced or metastatic breast cancer, multiple lines of therapy may be possible, and components of the combined regimens can overlap from one line to another. Thus, it is important to assess even the potential of cumulative and additive toxic effects among the drugs. Previous chemotherapy did not affect the safety profile of the combination regimen of everolimus and exemestane. The continuous monitoring of the safety signals of this drug combination from general clinical practice is important, in particular for stomatitis.
