5. Relationships between Dimensions of Instructional Quality and Trainee-Teacher Effectiveness

Abstract

This study examined the relationship between two dimensions of instructional quality and trainee-teacher effectiveness in the delivery of instruction among trainee-teachers at the College of Distance Education, University of Cape Coast (CoDE, UCC). The correlational design was adopted for the study. The accessible population was 53,293 comprising 1,837 CoDE course tutors and, 51,456 CoDE trainee-teachers. The sample size for the study was 726, made up of 397 trainee teachers and 329 course tutors. The data collected were analyzed with the Pearson product-moment correlation. The results showed that faculty quality and quality interaction had a positive and significant relationship with trainee-teacher effectiveness. It was recommended that the management of CoDE, UCC should continuously organize seminars and workshops to upgrade the competencies and interactive capacities of faculty members in order to enhance their relevance and competitiveness.

36. Distribution and Resorption Efficiency of Macroelements (N, P, K, Ca, and Mg) in Organs of Rumex alpinusL. in the Alps and the Giant (Krkonoše) Mountains

Abstract

Rumex alpinus, an alpine nitrophilous species, is a troublesome weed in pastures. Nutrient uptake and distributions in the organs of Rumex alpinusare not well-studied. We aimed to determine the distribution of macroelements in organs of Rumex alpinustogether with the nitrogen-phosphorus potassium ratio (NPK) and the resorption efficiency of N, P, K, calcium (Ca), and magnesium (Mg) in the Alps of Austria, Italy, and the Krkonoše (Giant) Mountains, Czech Republic. The pseudo-total and plant-available N, P, K, Ca, and Mg in soils and organs of Rumex alpinus(emerging, mature, and senescent leaves, petioles, stems, and rhizomes) were extracted with aqua regiaand Mehlich-3 procedures, respectively, followed by inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry. The contents of total and available macroelements in the soils reflected high variability with localities. There was a significant effect of locality and organs on the element contents, indicating differences in nutrition. Rumex alpinusexhibited higher N and P contents in emerging and mature leaves than in the senescent compared to Ca and Mg. The N:P and N:K ratios in the mature leaves were within the normal range but were indicative of comparatively higher demand for P. The mean resorption efficiency for N, P, and K was 52, 50, and 22%, respectively, lower than values for most terrestrial plants (62, 65, and 70%). The relatively high availability of macroelements in soils and plant organs with low N, P, and K resorption efficiency indicates a high N, P, and especially K-demanding species of Rumex alpinus.

37. Exercise-induced haemoglobin oxygen desaturation in patients with SCD

Abstract

Background: Patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) may experience severe clinical complications when there is low tissue oxygenation due to the increased risk of the polymerization of haemoglobin S in deoxygenated environment. The predictors of oxygen desaturation after exercise is not clear in patients with SCD. The current study compared lung function and six-minute walk test (6MWT) between SCD patients with oxygen desaturation after exercise and those without oxygen desaturation. Methodology: A cross-sectional study was conducted among adults with SCD (with HbSS and HbSC genotypes) at a large tertiary hospital in Accra, Ghana. Lung function and exercise tolerance (using the 6MWT) were performed for all the study subjects (n=119). Venous blood was collected from all the study subjects for determination of some haemolytic markers. Oxygen saturation was assessed before and after the 6MWT for all the study subjects, and individuals who had oxygen desaturation of ≥3% after the 6MWT were considered as having exercise-induced haemoglobin oxygen desaturation (EIHOD). The lung function and 6MWT were compared between these two groups. Predictors of EIHOD were determined in both HbSC and HbSS patients. Results: The prevalence of EIHOD in the HbSS and HbSC adults were 41% and 36.1% respectively. Haemoglobin, aspartate amino transaminase, indirect bilirubin, lactate dehydrogenase and six-minute walk distance did not differ in both HbSS and HbSC patients. Decreasing haemoglobin is a predictor of EIHOD in HbSC adults but not HbSS patients. Lung function abnormalities did not predict EIHOD in both HbSS and HbSC patients. Conclusion: The study demonstrates that SCD patients with EIHOD have similar degree of haemolysis and lung function when compared to those without EIHOD.
