Abstract

Visible-light driven H₂ evolution in water is achieved using catechol-photosensitised TiO₂ nanoparticles with a molecular nickel catalyst. Layer-by-layer immobilisation of catechol-TiO₂ onto tin-doped indium oxide electrodes generates photocathodic currents in the presence of an electron acceptor. This approach represents a new strategy for controlling photocurrent direction in dye-sensitised photoelectrochemical applications.

Abstract

We produce precise chiral-edge graphene nanoribbons on Cu{111} using self-assembly and surface-directed chemical reactions. We show that, using specific properties of the substrate, we can change the edge conformation of the nanoribbons, segregate their adsorption chiralities, and restrict their growth directions at low surface coverage. By elucidating the molecular-assembly mechanism, we demonstrate that our method constitutes an alternative bottom-up strategy toward synthesizing defect-free zigzag-edge graphene nanoribbons.

Abstract

Holey gold: Highly selective aerobic oxidation of methanol over alkylamines was achieved with a reusable nanoporous gold (AuNPore) catalyst that was fabricated from a Au-Ag alloy. This excellent chemoselectivity enabled direct N-formylation of alkylamines from a mixture of methanol and amines. The remarkable catalytic activity was attributed to the synergistic effect between gold and the residual silver remaining in the AuNPore.

Abstract

Aerobic oxidation of alcohols in the liquid phase proceeded smoothly in the presence of nanoporous gold catalyst. The catalyst is reusable multiple times without leaching and loss of the catalytic activity. The reaction was applied successfully to a flow system. Adsorptions of O(2) and 1-phenylethanol into the AuNPore were confirmed by TDS analysis.
