Osmium compounds with the Os 5d 4 electron configuration and an octahedral environment of neighboring atoms attract much attention due to the influence of the spin-orbit interaction on the appearance of magnetic properties in materials. X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy makes it possible to obtain information about the value of the spin–orbit interaction from measuring the intensity ratio of lines near the absorption edges. The influence of the spin–orbit interaction on the Os L2,3-edge XANES spectra of osmium compounds having an octahedral environment of halogen atoms is studied. Two types of systems are investigated, namely, isolated osmium clusters in complex compounds and the OsCl4 compound containing Os polymer chains bridged by Cl atoms. Magnetic-susceptibility measurements show a nonmagnetic ground state and Van Vleck paramagnetism in the case of isolated clusters and a nonzero magnetic moment over the entire temperature range in OsCl4. As a result of measurements of the XANES spectra, high values of the line intensity ratio are obtained near the Os L3/L2 absorption edges, which is associated with the strong effect of the spin-orbit interaction on the electronic structure. The theoretical analysis of the XANES spectra of Os compounds with different ligands and outer-sphere cations shows that the electronic structure and magnetic properties depend on the spin–orbit interaction, the crystal-field splitting, the electron-pairing energy, and noncubic distortions of the Os environment. Cl K-edges of a wide range of chlorides of 4d and 5d transition metals {MCl6}n− (M = Rh, Pd, Re, Os, Ir, Pt) are obtained using the Kosmos station of the VEPP-4 synchrotron. The combined use of experimental X-ray and theoretical means allows determination of the magnitude of spin–orbit coupling (SOC), depending on the transition metal. Nowadays, Pt-Os binary systems are mainly considered as catalysts and electrocatalysts, but the role of Os in these processes is still poorly understood. The electronic structure of Pt-Os nanosystems remains a few studied as well. Using bimetallic (NH4)2[Pt0.5Os0.5Cl6] as a single-source precursor for preparing Pt-Os nanoalloy through the thermal decomposition in hydrogen and inert atmospheres, the relation of morphology, atomic ordering, and electronic structure of Pt-Os nanoalloy was examined by in situ Quick XAFS, XPS, PXRD, SEM, and HRTEM techniques. Being the only variable parameter, the decomposition atmosphere was found to govern the morphology of the Pt-Os nanoalloy and change the atomic ordering (alloying extent), which involves a change in the electronic structure. In a hydrogen atmosphere, the nanofibers (NFs) (ø ~ 5–6 nm) with the atomic ordering Oscore&Pt-richshell were observed to form; in a nitrogen atmosphere, thin nanoplates (NPLs) (~ 12 nm) with the atomic architecture Os-richcore&Pt-richshell were found out. The depletion in the Os 5d5/2 and Pt 5d5/2,3/2 states was revealed for Pt-Os nanoalloys. This unusual result disagrees with the known d-band theory and indicates that there is a gain of non-d conduction electron counts at one or both sites. Nitrogen-doped and pure carbon nanotube (CNT) based composites were fabricated for investigating their dielectric properties in static regime as well as electromagnetic response properties in microwave frequency range (Ka-band). Two classes of host matrix-polystyrene and phosphate unfired ceramics-have been used for composites fabrication. The study reveals miscellaneous effect of nitrogen doping on the dielectric permittivity, dc conductivity and electromagnetic interference shielding efficiency of CNT-based composites, produced with both polymer and ceramic matrices. The high-frequency polarizability, estimated for different-length CNTs, and static polarizability, calculated for nitrogen-containing CNT models using a quantum-chemical approach, show that this effect results from a decrease of the nanotube defect-free-length and deterioration of the polarizability with incorporation of nitrogen in pyridinic form. Nitrogen-containing carbon nanotubes were obtained by acetonitrile at 850 degree C over catalytic nanoparticles formed by the thermal decomposition of Co and Ni bimaleates or their mutual solutions. A study was conducted on the structure and composition of synthesized samples by electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction (XRD), and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS).
