The tragic consequences of vehicles running into infrastructures have raised the need for perimeter protection. One common perimeter barrier is a set of piles or posts in an in-line geometry as an efficient way to contain or redirect errant vehicles. To date, the design of such barriers relies mostly on performing full-scale crash tests. These crash tests are expensive, and it is often practical to run such tests. In this paper, a general yet simple analysis-design model called TAMU-POST was developed to predict the response of a group of in-line piles impacted by a vehicle. TAMU-POST is based on the finite difference solution to the governing differential equation for a beam supported by piles. The piles are represented by single degrees of freedom consisting of a dashpot, a lumped mass, a spring, and a slider. A large number of computer simulations using a non-linear finite element program LS-DYNA as well as the data obtained from two full-scale crash tests were used to calibrate the proposed model. The design quantities are the barrier deflection, the vehicle dynamic penetration defined as the maximum vehicle intrusion into the barrier, as well as other parameters including the bending moment in the piles and in the beams. A Monte Carlo Simulation analysis was conducted using TAMU-POST to evaluate the probability of failure of a group of in-line piles under a given vehicular impact when considering the inherent uncertainties associated with the input parameters and the model coefficients.

Abstract Background Given that social media use (SMU) is an increasingly widespread activity among university students, more information is needed to evaluate its relationship with students’ mental health, particularly medical students. Objective The present study assessed the relationships between SMU and coping style with psychological distress and academic performance of medical students. Methods An offline cross-sectional survey conducted with 398 undergraduate medical students. The survey collected data on demographics, psychological distress (DASS-21), coping strategies (Brief COPE Scale), academic performance (grade point average) and estimated average time spent on social media per day. Structural equation modeling was used to clarify relationships between the main study variables. The study also examined the mediating effect of maladaptive coping between SMU and psychological distress. Results Students with higher levels of psychological distress were more likely to be engaged in frequent social media use. This study aims to investigate the effects of manure and vermicompost in terms of soil elasticity modulus changes in loam soil. The uniaxial compression test measures the compressive strength of a soil cylinder without any lateral load. The modulus of elasticity was determined by plotting the strain-stress diagrams and calculating the slope of these diagrams. The increase in moisture and organic matter content significantly improved soil flexibility and decreased its elasticity modulus. It was found that adding animal manure had a greater effect on the flexibility of the soil as compared to vermicompost, while the elasticity modulus of the samples containing animal manure was lower. The interaction effect of moisture and the organic matter content indicated that the increase in humidity was more effective in the soil containing vermicompost as compared to the soil containing manure, such that when the manure rate was around 19%, the moisture increase had no significant impact on the elasticity modulus. It was found that adding organic matter was more effective at the low moisture level of 15.5% than at higher moistures where the effect of adding organic matter did not affect the soil elasticity modulus decrement as strongly.

Abstract Background Menopausal women should learn self-care practices to enjoy a healthy lifestyle, positive health behaviors, and health status. In addition, the lack of self-care knowledge can lead to unhealthy attitudes and lifestyles, resulting in many complications. Improved self-care knowledge can foster positive attitudes, leading to healthier lifestyles as a beneficial cycle. However, menopausal women have limited knowledge about self-care and evaluation tools. Therefore, this study aimed to develop and investigate the validity and reliability of the Women’s Self-care Knowledge and Attitude Questionnaire (WSKAQ) in Iranian menopausal women. Methods This cross-sectional study was conducted on 249 menopausal women, aged between 45 and 65 years and at least one year post-menopause, with a minimum literacy level of elementary education. Validation properties included construct validity, exploratory (EFA), and discriminant validity. Reliability was further established through Cronbach’s α and McDonald’s Omega. PASS 15 and SPSS 27 software were used to select centers, calculate sample size and analyze the data, respectively. Results The initial stage of construct validity involved the Kolmogorov–Smirnov test and EFA, resulting in a 6-item self-care knowledge subscale, 47.29% of the total data variance, and 7-item self-care attitude subscale, 55.50% of the total data variance. Independent t-test indicated that menopausal women with education level equal to or higher than diploma have significantly higher self-care attitude scores than those with lower than diploma (p = 0.007). Additionally, significant correlations were observed between self-care knowledge and attitude (r:0.30). Cronbach’s α and McDonald’s Omega coefficients of the 13-item WSKAQ were 0.77 and 0.78, respectively. Conclusions Based on the results, the WSKAQ, consisting of 13 items, was validated and reliable for assessing the self-care knowledge and attitude of Iranian menopausal women.

Background: A society’s culture, beliefs, and values are important and effective factors in lifestyle and health status. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the correlation between older adults’ tendency towards superstitions and their healthylifestyles.Methods: This study was descriptive-analytical and of a correlational type. The statistical population consisted of all the older adults covered by healthcare centers in the North of Iran. The sample size was determined to be 360 using the multistage random sampling method. Data were collected using the Elderly Healthy Lifestyle and Tendency to Superstitions Questionnaires. Spearman’s test, regression analysis, chi-square, Kruskal-Wallis tests, and SPSS 28 software were utilized to analyze the data.Results: Among a total of 360 elderly participants in the study, 173 were male, and 187 were female, in the age range of 60 to 91 years. The aim of this study was to investigate the mediating role of emotional inhibition in the relationship between emotion awareness levels and life events associated with Post-Traumatic Stress Syndrome. The study’s statistical population consisted of all individuals who visited counseling centers in Khorramabad, Doroud, and Boroujerd between 2019 and 2020. A convenience sampling method was employed to select 400 individuals, of whom 283 were women and 117 were men. The research method was descriptive-correlational. Kellner’s Emotional Inhibition Scale (EIS), the Levels of Emotional Awareness Scale by Lane and Schwartz (LEAS), the Life Events Checklist by Weathers et al. (LEC-5), and the PTSD Checklist for Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (PCL-5), Fifth Edition by Weathers et al. are all research instruments. The data was analyzed using the structural equation modeling method, and the fit of the measurement model was assessed using confirmatory factor analysis, AMOS 24.0 software, and maximum likelihood (ML) estimation. The indirect path coefficient between life events and post-traumatic stress disorder was positive in the current study, while the indirect path coefficient between emotion awareness levels and post-traumatic stress disorder was negative and significant at the 0.01 level. Based on the results of the present study, psychotherapists and specialists in this field are advised to concentrate on the level of awareness and emotional inhibition of individuals by analyzing their life events in order to mitigate post-traumatic stress syndrome.

Abstract Background: One of the critical cases of recurrent pregnancy loss is immunological factors, whereas obtaining effective prevention or treatment is necessary for cognition of reasons. Objective: In this study, we tried to evaluate some immunological factors related to recurrent pregnancy loss. Materials and Methods: This case-control study was conducted on 66 women at the age of 18–35 yr who were referred to the Clinic of Gynecology and Obstetrics, Ali Ibn Abi Taleb hospital, Zahedan, Iran, from August-December 2019. Interleukin 33 (IL-33) serum levels were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Immunoglobulin G, Immunoglobulin A, Immunoglobulin M (IgM), and C-reactive protein levels were measured by serology and hematology methods. Results: The mean age of total participants was 30.8 ± 3.80 yr. The mean serum IL-33 in the case group was 318.5 ± 254.1 pg/ml and was lower than the control group (354.2 ± 259.9 pg/ml), which was not statistically significant (p = 0.52). The level of C-reactive protein in the case and control was not significantly different (p = 0.27), and Immunoglobulin A and Immunoglobulin G in the case and control were also not significantly different (p = 0.46, and p = 0.16, respectively), but there were significant differences (p = 0.003) between the level of the IgM in the case and control groups. Conclusion: No statistically significant difference was observed in the IL-33 serum level, for at least 4–6 months after the last abortion in the case group and the final live birth in the control group. In contrast, serum levels of IgM were statistically significant. Finally, the need for more studies is felt according to the different results of the previous studies in this field.

Accurate flood prediction models and effective flood preparedness rely on thoroughly understanding rainfall–runoff dynamics. Similarly, effective rainfall–runoff models account for multiple interrelated parameters for robust runoff prediction. Process-based physical models offer valuable insights into hydrological processes, but their effectiveness can be hindered by data limitations or difficulties in acquiring specific data. Motivated by the frequent flooding events and limited data availability in the East Branch DuPage watershed, Illinois, this study addresses a critical gap in research by investigating effective discharge prediction methods. In this study, two significant machine learning (ML) models, artificial neural network (ANN) and support vector machine (SVM), were employed for discharge prediction. Historical data spanning from 2006 to 2021 were utilized to assess the performance of the models. Hyperparameter tuning was performed on the models to optimize their performance, and root mean square error (RMSE), Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE), percent bias (PBIAS), coefficient of determination (R2), and the normalized root mean squared error (NRMSE) were used as evaluation metrics. Although both machine learning models demonstrated strong performance, the analysis revealed that the ANN model emerged as the more reliable option for predicting discharge in the watershed. Crucially, the ANN model surpassed the SVM model’s performance, achieving superior accuracy in predicting peak discharge events within the study area. Our findings have the potential to assist decision-makers and communities in implementing more dependable flood mitigation strategies, particularly in regions where hydrology data are limited.

Abstract To improve embryo transfer success and increase the chances of live birth in assisted reproductive methods, there is a growing demand for the use of pre-implantation genetic testing (PGT). However, the invasive approaches used in PGT have led to in vitrofertilization failure and abortions, increasing anxiety levels for parents. To address this, non-invasive PGT methods have been introduced, such as the detection of DNA in blastocoel fluid of blastocysts and spent culture media (SCM). These methods have proven to be minimally invasive and effective in detecting aneuploidy in the chromosomes of human embryos. This review aims to explore the different approaches to pre-implantation diagnosis, including invasive and non-invasive methods, with a particular focus on non-invasive PGT (niPGT). The search strategy involved gathering data from scientific databases such as PubMed, Google Scholar, and Science Direct using relevant keywords. The search was conducted until January 2023. In total, 22 studies have successfully reported the detection and amplification of cell-free DNA in the embryonic SCM. It is important to note that niPGT has some limitations, which include differences in indicators such as cell-free DNA amplification rate, concordance, level of maternal DNA contamination, sensitivity, and specificity between SCM samples and biopsied cells. Therefore, more extensive and detailed research is needed to fully understand niPGT's potential for clinical applications.

Background: The present study aimed to determine the factors affecting the decision of hearing-impaired adults to perform cochlear implantation (CI) and the impact of each factor on the results of hearing quality, speech understanding, spatial hearing, and quality of life (QoL) after implantation.Methods: In this cross-sectional study, thirty-nine adults with CI completed the Speech, Spatial, and Hearing Quality Scale (SSQ), Quality of Life Standard (SF-12), and Tinnitus Handicap Index (THI) questionnaires. One-way ANOVA and two-step cluster analysis with Schwarz’s Bayesian information criterion as clustering criterion were used to analyze the data.Results: There was a significant difference between males and females in the total score of QoL, physical health, and age of hearing loss (HL) diagnosis, but not in the SSQ questionnaire. In the mental health of all participants, a significant difference was observed in two levels of THI. Age at implantation and income, age of HL diagnosis, duration of CI, degree of tinnitus, and level of education (literacy) play an important role in QoL, speech comprehension, spatial hearing, mental health, and SSQ, respectively. Some patients’ decisions for CI surgery consisted of tinnitus before implantation, age, sex, income, and QoL.Conclusion: Some demographic factors are effective in the process of a person’s decision to perform implantation. Besides other implant factors in adult CI candidacy, considering the person’s decision may lead to realistic expectations from the surgery and related results, which can be attended to in counseling before implantation.

Brucellosis is a chronic and debilitating disease in humans, causing great economic losses in the livestock industry. Making an effective vaccine is one of the most important concerns for this disease. The new mRNA vaccine technology due to its accuracy and high efficiency has given promising results in various diseases. The objective of this research was to create a novel mRNA vaccine with multiple epitopes targeting Brucella melitensis . Seventeen antigenic proteins and their appropriate epitopes were selected with immunoinformatic tools and surveyed in terms of toxicity, allergenicity, and homology. Then, their presentation and identification by MHC cells and other immune cells were checked with valid tools such as molecular docking, and a multi-epitope protein was modeled, and after optimization, mRNA was analyzed in terms of structure and stability. Ultimately, the immune system’s reaction to this novel vaccine was evaluated and the results disclosed that the designed mRNA construct can be an effective and promising vaccine that requires laboratory and clinical trials.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a high-prevalence and progressive disorder. Due to lack of reliable in vitro models to recapitulate the consecutive phases, the exact pathogenesis mechanism of this disease and approved therapeutic medications have not been revealed yet. It has been proven that the interplay between multiple hepatic cell types and liver extracellular matrix (ECM) are critical in NAFLD initiation and progression. Herein, a liver microtissue (LMT) consisting of Huh-7, THP-1, and LX-2 cell lines and human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC), which could be substituted for the main hepatic cells (hepatocyte, Kupffer, stellate, and sinusoidal endothelium, respectively), encapsulated in liver derived ECM-Alginate composite, was bioengineered. When the microtissues were treated with free fatty acids (FFAs) including Oleic acid (6.6×10−4M) and Palmitic acid (3.3×10−4M), they displayed the key features of NAFLD, including similar pattern of transcripts for genes involved in lipid metabolism, inflammation, insulin-resistance, and fibrosis, as well as pro-inflammatory and pro-fibrotic cytokines’ secretions and intracellular lipid accumulation. Continuing FFAs supplementation, we demonstrated that the NAFLD phenomenon was established on day 3 and progressed to the initial fibrosis stage by day 8. Furthermore, this model was stable until day 12 post FFAs withdrawal on day 3. Moreover, administration of an anti-steatotic drug candidate, Liraglutide (15 μM), on the NAFLD microtissues significantly ameliorated the NAFLD phenomenon. Overall, we bioengineered a drug-responsive, cost-benefit liver microtissues which can simulate the initiation and progression of NAFLD. It is expected that this platform could potentially be used for studying molecular pathogenesis of NAFLD and high-throughput drug screening.

Purpose: This retrospective clinical study aimed to evaluate the implants placed in fresh sockets and investigate the effect of varied oral health conditions and treatment plan details on the clinical and radiographic outcomes. Materials and methods: Fifty-nine participants (102 implants) were included in this study. Four variables, including mean probing depth (PD), mean marginal bone loss (MBL), pink esthetic score (PES), and patient satisfaction, were significant dependent variables, and the effects of independent variables on these four items were studied. The data were analyzed by the analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) using a statistical software. Results: The mean follow-up period was 4.75 ± 1.74 years, and the mean MBL was 1.21 ± 0.81 mm. The survival rate was 97 %. There were significant effects of the finish line site, keratinized gingival width, and attached gingival width on PD after adjusting the factors. Also, the implant brand, plaque index, and uncemented prosthesis affected MBL significantly. In addition, significant effects of the surgeon, implant brand, and proximal contact on PES were found. Conclusion: More PD was found around restorations with a finish line site > 1.5 mm subgingival. Sufficient attached gingiva was a more effective factor on PD than keratinized gingiva. Implants with more plaque scores showed more MBL.

Abstract Despite the current use of some Bacillus spp. as probiotics, looking for and introducing new efficient and safe potential probiotic strains is one of the most important topics in both microbiology and food industry. This study aimed to isolate, identify, and evaluate the probiotic characteristics and safety of some Bacillus spp. from natural sources. Thirty-six spore-forming, Gram-positive, and catalase-positive Bacillus isolates were identified in 54 samples of soil, feces and dairy products. Bacterial identification was performed using 16S rDNA sequencing. To evaluate the probiotic potential of isolates, the resistance of bacterial cells to simulated gastrointestinal tract (GIT) conditions, the presence of enterotoxin genes, their susceptibility to antibiotics, antimicrobial and hemolytic activities and biochemical profiles were investigated. The results revealed that eight sporulating Bacillus spp. isolates fulfilled all tested probiotic criteria. They showed a high growth rate, non-hemolytic and lecithinase activity, and resistance to simulated GIT conditions. These strains exhibited broad-spectrum antibacterial activity against pathogenic bacteria. In addition, they did not exhibit antibacterial resistance to the 12 tested antibiotics. The results of this study suggest that these isolates can be considered as candidates for functional foods and as safe additives to improve diet quality.

Abstract Background Needle stick injuries (NSI) can lead to dangerous infectious diseases for health care workers. This study aimed to determine the predictors of observance of safe injection guidelines in hospital nursing staff, based on protection motivation theory. Methods This cross-sectional study was conducted on the nursing staff of five randomly selected teaching and general hospitals of Shiraz University of Medical Sciences, Fars province, Iran, in 2021. Mindful self-care is a valuable activity that contributes to old people’s independence and self-control and its development is in line with the duties of social workers. This study aimed to validate the mindful self-care scale (MSCS) for Iranian old people and was performed on old people living in the community of Shiraz, Iran. This cross-sectional study was conducted on old people living in the community who met the inclusion criteria in Shiraz, Iran. After linguistic validation of the Persian version of MSCS with 36 items, face, and content validity were determined. Then the first part of construct validity was conducted using a kurtosis test, and exploratory factor analysis with the first sample ( n = 250). After selecting the appropriate items, confirmatory factor analysis was assessed with the second sample ( n = 250). Scale reliability was also evaluated. The optimal cut-off points were obtained by calculating the area under the curve (AUC). SPSS version 23 was used for further data analysis, while confirmatory factor analysis was conducted using AMOS version 24. Exploratory factor analysis loaded only 24 items with four factors. The modified second-order confirmatory factor analysis model displayed a good fit (RMSEA = 0.04; CFI = 0.90; GFI = 0.90). Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of MSCS with 24 items was .94. The cut-off points were 38, 11, 23, and 17 for factors of resilience, goal achievement, supportive relationship, and self-care respectively, and 90 for the whole instrument. The study found that the MSCS short form with 24 items is valid and reliable in the Iranian elderly population, making it an effective tool for mental self-care screening and a practical tool for social workers. However, the study recommends repeating the study in other cities of Iran to generalize the findings.

ObjectiveThis study investigated the effect of photodynamic therapy on chronic periodontitis patients and then evaluated the microbial, immunological, periodontal, and clinical outcomes. The significant effects of photodynamic therapy obtained by in vitro and in vivo studies have made it a popular treatment for periodontal diseases in recent years. Photodynamic therapy is a novel bactericidal strategy that is stronger, faster, and less expensive than scaling and root planing.MethodThis study registered on PROSPERO (CRD42021267008) and retrieved fifty-three randomized controlled trials by searching nine databases (Medline, Embase, Scopus, Open Gray, Google Scholar, ProQuest, the Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and ClinicalTrials.gov) from 2008 to 2023. Of 721 records identified through database searches following title and full-text analysis, and excluding duplicate and irrelevant publications, 53 articles were included in this systematic review. Fifty of the 53 eligible studies fulfilled all the criteria in the Joanna Briggs Institute’s (JBI’s) Checklist for RCTs; the remaining articles met 9–12 criteria and were considered high quality.ResultsThe present study showed that photodynamic therapy in adjunct to scaling and root planing has the potential to improve periodontal parameters such as clinical attachment loss or gain, decrease in bleeding on probing, and probing pocket depth. In addition, photodynamic therapy decreases the rate of periodontal pathogens and inflammation markers, which, in turn, reduces the progression of periodontitis.ConclusionPhotodynamic therapy is considered a promising, adjunctive, and low-cost therapeutic method that is effective in tissue repair, reducing chronic periodontitis, reducing inflammation, and well-tolerated by patients.

Abstract Objective We investigated the association between the glucocorticoid receptor (GR) gene, also known as the nuclear receptor subfamily 3, group C, member 1 (NR3C1), rs41423247 polymorphism, and functional seizures (psychogenic nonepileptic seizures/attacks) in a case–control study. We hypothesized that the tested polymorphism has significant associations with functional seizures (psychogenic nonepileptic seizures/attacks) independent from comorbid depression. Methods Seventy patients with functional seizures (psychogenic nonepileptic seizures/attacks), 70 with major depressive disorder (MDD), and 70 healthy controls (HCs) were studied. Their DNAs were analyzed for NR3C1 rs41423247 polymorphism. Results Genotype and allele frequencies of rs41423247 were different between the three groups. G allele carriers were more frequent in patients with functional seizures (psychogenic nonepileptic seizures/attacks) and those with MDD compared to HCs (p = 0.0001). However no significant difference was observed with respect to allele distributions between functional seizures (psychogenic nonepileptic seizures/attacks) and MDD groups (p = 0.391). CC genotype was less often associated with functional seizures (psychogenic nonepileptic seizures/attacks) versus HC: Codominant model; p = 0.001, OR = 0.11, 95% CI = 0.05–0.24, and −2loglilkelihood = 231.7. In comparison between functional seizures (psychogenic nonepileptic seizures/attacks) group and other (MDD + HC) groups, we observed a significant association between CG genotype and functional seizures (psychogenic nonepileptic seizures/attacks) (Codominant model; p = 0.001, OR = 5.63, 95% CI = 2.60–12.40 and −2loglikelihood = 245.99). Significance Patients with functional seizures (psychogenic nonepileptic seizures/attacks) and those with MDD were significantly more often G allele carriers in rs41423247 compared with HCs. We observed a significant association between CG genotype and functional seizures (psychogenic nonepileptic seizures/attacks). However, we could not exclude the possibility of confounding effects of depression. Future genetic studies of patients with functional seizures (psychogenic nonepileptic seizures/attacks) should include a comparison group with depression in addition to a comparison group of HCs.

Abstract Objectives Physiological changes during pregnancy make mothers susceptible to periodontal diseases, in particular gingivitis, which could be prevented by good oral hygiene. Therefore, their knowledge and attitude could affect their oral hygiene and general health. This study therefore aimed to investigate the knowledge, attitude, and practice regarding oral hygiene, of pregnant women living in a city in Iran. Material and Methods It was a cross‐sectional study that was performed in Urmia City in 2019. After completing an informed consent form, pregnant women completed a specially designed questionnaire, which included questions on demographic characteristics and assessed participants' knowledge and attitude about oral health care during pregnancy. A clinical examination of each participant's oral cavity was performed and dental plaque index (PI), gingival index (GI), and number of decayed, missed, filled teeth (DMFT) index were recorded. Any correlations between participants' knowledge and attitude and oral health indices were evaluated. A paired t test and Pearson's correlation coefficient were employed for statistical analysis. Results A total of 96 pregnant women (mean age of 29.11 ± 6.80 years) participated in this study. Among them, 67 had a moderate level of knowledge. There was no significant correlation between participants' knowledge, and attitude levels and educational level (p = .88 and p = .43, respectively). Also, there was no correlation between knowledge and attitude levels and GI, PI, and DMFT (p > .05). Conclusions This study showed that the knowledge and attitude of the pregnant women who participated were not favorable and their oral hygiene needed to be improved.

Abstract The conformational ensembles of G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) include inactive and active states. Spectroscopy techniques, including NMR, show that agonists, antagonists and other ligands shift the ensemble toward specific states depending on the pharmacological efficacy of the ligand. How receptors recognize ligands and the kinetic mechanism underlying this population shift is poorly understood. Here, we investigate the kinetic mechanism of neurotensin recognition by neurotensin receptor 1 (NTS1) using 19F-NMR, hydrogen-deuterium exchange mass spectrometry and stopped-flow fluorescence spectroscopy. Our results indicate slow-exchanging conformational heterogeneity on the extracellular surface of ligand-bound NTS1. Numerical analysis of the kinetic data of neurotensin binding to NTS1 shows that ligand recognition follows an induced-fit mechanism, in which conformational changes occur after neurotensin binding. This approach is applicable to other GPCRs to provide insight into the kinetic regulation of ligand recognition by GPCRs.

Purpose: Pennyroyal is a species of the Lamiaceae family with potent anti-cancer and antioxidant properties. Combining this antioxidant with chemotherapeutic agents enhances the effectiveness of these agents by inducing more apoptosis in cancerous cells. Methods: Here, methotrexate (MTX) combined with pennyroyal oil based on PEGylated nanostructured lipid carriers (NLCs) was assessed. These nanoparticles were physiochemically characterized, and their anti-cancer effects and targeting efficiency were investigated on the folate receptor-positive human breast cancer cell line (MCF-7) and negative human alveolar basal epithelial cells (A549). Abstract Background Psychological distress (PD) is a significant issue during pregnancy and postpartum, adversely affecting both children and mothers. This study aims to determine PD's prevalence and risk factors in a large Iranian population sample during pregnancy and postpartum. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted using data from the Babol Pregnancy Mental Health Registry (located in the north of Iran) between June 2020 and March 2021. A total of 2305 women were included, with 1639 during pregnancy and 666 during postpartum. Psychological distress was assessed using the Brief Symptoms Inventory (BSI-18), and data were analyzed using independent t-tests and multiple logistic regressions. Results The prevalence of psychological distress, defined by a cut-off score of BSI ≥ 13, was 19% during pregnancy and 15% during postpartum. Abstract In this work, to evaluate solute–solute, solute–solvent and phase separation in aqueous systems containing {betaine + poly ethylene glycol dimethyl ether with molar mass 250 g mol−1 (PEGDME250)}, {betaine + K3PO4} and {betaine + K2HPO4}, first water activity measurements were made at 298.15 K and atmospheric pressure using the isopiestic technique. The water iso-activity lines of these three systems were obtained which have positive deviations from the semi-ideal solutions. This suggests that betaine-polymer and betaine-K3PO4 or betaine-K2HPO4 interactions are unfavorable; and these mixtures may form aqueous two-phase systems (ATPSs) at certain concentrations. Indeed the formation of ATPSs was observed experimentally. Then, osmotic coefficient values were calculated using the obtained water activity data; and, using the polynomial method the solute activity coefficients were determined. Using these activity coefficients, the transfer Gibbs energy ( $$\Delta {G}_{tr}^{i}$$ Δ G tr i ) values were calculated for the transfer of betaine from aqueous binary to ternary systems consisting polymer (PEGDME250) or salts (K3PO4 and K2HPO4). The obtained positive $$\Delta {G}_{tr}^{i}$$ Δ G tr i values again indicated that there is unfavorable interaction between betaine and these solutes. Finally, the volumetric and ultrasonic studies were made on these systems to examine the evidence for the nature of interactions between betaine and the studied salts or polymer.

Rice is one of the plants proven to possess antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-proliferative, and whitening properties, making it one of the most beneficial plants in this regard. This study aimed to introduce a novel natural cosmetic and pharmaceutical product based on rice callus as a source of active ingredients that can inhibit skin melanoma cell (B16F10) proliferation and brighten the skin. The 2,4-D hormone at concentrations of 1 µg/mL and 1.5 µg/mL was used to induce rice callus formation. Rice callus extracts were then prepared using aqueous and ethanolic solvents, with a concentration of 1 mg/mL used for characterization tests. To determine the optimal hormone concentration, the phenols/flavonoids, antioxidant activity, proteins, and carbohydrates in the extracts were measured. The optimal concentration of the hormone was found to be 1 µg/mL. Finally, the anti-melanocyte and skin-whitening activity of the extracts was assessed through measurements of their cytotoxicity and inhibition of melanin synthesis-related enzymes. Cellular cytotoxicity measurements revealed that the ethanolic extract induced more cytotoxicity than the aqueous extract, with IC50 values of 566.3 µg/mL for the ethanolic extract and 1327 µg/mL for the aqueous extract. Skin-whitening-related tests demonstrated that the extracts were 1.7 times more effective than arbutin in inhibiting factors that cause hyperpigmentation. The aqueous extract achieved 85% inhibition of melanin biosynthesis at a concentration of 3200 µg/mL, compared to 68% for the ethanolic extract and 50% for arbutin. Based on these findings, rice callus extract can be introduced as a new, effective substance for skin-lightening and anti-melanocyte products in cosmeceutical and pharmaceutical formulations.
