Background: The National Quality Assurance Standards (NQAS) have been developed keeping in specific requirements for public health facilities as well global best practices. Standards are primarily meant for providers to assess their quality for improvement through predefined standards and to bring up their facilities for certification. Objectives: To study the effect of National Accreditation Board for Hospitals (NABH)-recommended training on patient care standards based on NQAS guidelines. Materials and Methods: The research was conducted at a tertiary-level teaching institute and medical care center in North India. The institute has multiple blocks, few have undergone training for NABH standards, and few have not due to administrative reasons. Only the NABH-trained blocks underwent accreditation process through NABH and provided an opportunity to study whether there is a difference in patient care standards between NABH-trained staff and nontrained staff. It was a checklist-based observational study. Results: The evaluation covered seven key areas in intensive care unit (ICU) and wards in both NABH-trained and nontrained hospital blocks: patient rights, inputs, support services, clinical services, infection control, quality management, and outcome. The compliance percentage of ICU and wards was measured for NABH-trained and nontrained hospital blocks. NABH-trained blocks in both areas showed better compliance adhering to standards as compared to nontrained blocks for all seven key areas. Conclusion: The study findings indicate that NABH-recommended training showed positive impact on patient care standards as per the NQAS guidelines. The NABH-trained hospital block exhibited superior compliance with various domains including patient rights, inputs, support services, clinical services, infection control, and quality management.

Background: Cysticercosis, a common parasitic infestation in endemic regions, may rarely cause widespread dissemination throughout the body resulting in disseminated cysticercosis (DCC), scarcely reported in children. Clinical Description: An 8-year-old boy from rural India presented with a 2-week history of headache, abnormal movements, intermittent fever, vomiting, and altered sensorium. Clinical examination revealed generalized hypertonia and signs of raised intracranial pressure. Brain imaging displayed a “starry sky” pattern indicative of neurocysticercosis (NCC) encephalitis. Further imaging revealed cystic lesions throughout the thoracic, abdominal, and paraspinal muscles, confirming DCC. Management and Outcome: The patient was managed with intravenous methylprednisolone, antiepileptics, and acetazolamide, avoiding albendazole due to the risk of exacerbating cerebral edema. The patient regained consciousness after the fifth pulse of steroids and progressively improved thereafter being asymptomatic and seizure-free at the last follow-up, 3 months after discharge. Conclusion: This case creates awareness regarding a rare entity of NCC encephalitis seen in DCC. The condition may be considered in children presenting with encephalopathy in endemic regions. Supportive treatment with steroids without antiparasitic treatment may be successful.

Context: Adolescent girls suffer the brunt of malnutrition due to increased nutritional needs to facilitate rapid growth spurt including menstruation and increased physical activity. This vulnerable group has low social power and is subjected to peer and social pressures related to body image and weight. All these factors along with the sociocultural milieu may lead to a spectrum of nutritional problems in them. Aims: To determine factors associated with malnourishment among adolescent females of age 15–19 years in an urban slum of Raipur City. Settings and Design: The study setting was the urban field practice area of the institute in Raipur. The study was an analytical cross-sectional study done from January 2022 to June 2023 among 401 adolescent girls of age 15–19 years. Methods and Material: The sampling was done using the consecutive sampling method. The study tools used were a semi-structured questionnaire on sociodemographic variables and details of the respondents, anthropometric measurements, dietary assessment using the 24-hour food recall method, and food consumption patterns using a food frequency questionnaire. Statistical Analysis Used: The Chi-square test of significance was applied to find the association between malnourishment with the input variables. For calculating the strength of the association, the odds ratio was estimated for those variables with P value < 0.2 in the Chi-square test, and later the odds ratio was adjusted for confounding with the same variables, using multivariable logistic regression. Results: According to BMI-for-age Z scores, 2% were severely thin (< −3 SD), 9.7% were thin (−3 to − 2 SD), 5% were overweight (1 to 2 SD), and 1.5% were obese (>2SD). While measuring the height-for-age Z scores, 5.5% had severe stunting and 21.9% had moderate stunting. Those respondents with educational status of high school or below [AOR 3.5 (1.8–6.8), P < 0.001] and those who did not consume a non-vegetarian diet [AOR 2.1 (1.1–4.1), P = 0.02] had significantly higher adjusted odds of being undernourished (severely thin or thin) as compared to those with educational status above high school and those who consumed a mixed diet, respectively. The respondents who are currently not going to school/college had significantly higher adjusted odds [AOR 2.2 (1.2–3.8), P = 0.007] of being stunted when compared to those who are attending school/college. Conclusions: The significant levels of malnutrition observed in this study among late adolescent girls aged 15–19 years—11.7% undernourishment, 6.5% overnourishment, and 27.4% stunting—highlight the concerning vulnerability of this population. The higher prevalence of stunting throws light onto the chronicity of malnutrition. As seen from the significant associations, proper education, and a mixed diet will help nurture a healthy female adolescent population.

Introduction: Diabetic foot is one of the most devastating complications of diabetes and is the leading cause of lower limb amputations. Patients with a long-standing history of diabetes mellitus often experience symptoms of pain, burning sensation, numbness, and paraesthesia in the heel and feet. These symptoms may be due to compression of the medial plantar nerve, a branch of the tibial nerve, within the tarsal tunnel. Aim: To evaluate the incidence of Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome (TTS) in patients suffering from Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM). Materials and Methods: This study was a cross-sectional analysis conducted at the Army Hospital (Research and Referral) in New Delhi, India, from October 2019 to April 2021. A total of 30 consecutive diabetic patients presenting with pain, burning, numbness, and paraesthesia in the heel or feet, with or without ulcers, were included. All patients were clinically evaluated using three-point sensory testing, Tinel’s sign at the tarsal tunnel, and assessment for the presence of ulcers on the foot. All patients underwent Nerve Conduction Velocity (NCV) studies. Imaging studies in the form of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) were performed for a complete work-up of these patients and further diagnosis of TTS. The incidence of TTS was evaluated using clinical, radiological and electrodiagnostic studies. Results: Of the 30 patients enrolled, 20 were males (66.7%) and 10 were females (33.3%). The incidence of TTS among diabetic patients was found to be 14 (46.7%) based on electrodiagnostic criteria, 22 (73.3%) based on clinical evaluation, and 25 (83.3%) based on radiological findings. The mean HbA1c level was 8.5±1.04%. The most common imaging finding was oedema, observed in 83.3% of patients. Inflammation and ganglion cysts were seen in 13.3% and 10% of patients, respectively. Conclusion: TTS is difficult to diagnose. MRI is a useful imaging modality to support the diagnosis. Electrodiagnostic studies can help confirm the diagnosis.

Introduction The Kayakalp guidelines for public healthcare facilities under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Clean India Mission) focus on improving sanitation, cleanliness, and infection control at public hospitals in India. This study was conducted in a 960-bed tertiary-level teaching hospital in eastern India. Housekeeping has been a challenge in public institutions, with factors like overcrowding and resource constraints. Tobacco and betel nut chewing, spitting, poor sanitation practices, and open urination are major challenges in ensuring sanitation at the hospital. The research objective was to study the implementation of the Kayakalp guidelines for quality improvement in housekeeping services at the institution. Methods A pre- and post-interventional study was conducted using the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) quality tool. Plan phases included the gap assessment using the Kayakalp checklist with numerical scoring. Necessary interventions were done under three headings: structure, processes, and outcomes in the “Do” phase. The “Check” phase included monitoring of the activities followed by the “Act” phase, which included a review of the action plan. External experts nominated by the government conducted the final assessments and recommended it as one of the cleanest hospitals. Results A 360-degree improvement was observed in hospital services, with assessment score improvement from 73.68% to 95.0%. The institution received the first prize in 2020 and 2021 and runners-up Kayakalp National Award under category “B” (Institute of National Importance) Hospitals in 2019. Conclusion The implementation of Kayakalp guidelines of the Government of India proved to be efficient in the improvement of housekeeping and infection control practices in the institution.

The paper aims to introduce some fixed point results in the setting of sequential compact b-metric spaces to prove Eldeisten-Suzuki-type contraction for self-mappings‎. ‎These contributions extend the existing literature on fixed point for ordered metric spaces and fixed point theory‎. ‎Through illustrative examples‎, ‎we showcase the practical applicability of our proposed notions and results‎, ‎demonstrating their effectiveness in real-world scenarios‎.

Algal blooms pose a significant threat to the ecological integrity and biodiversity in aquatic ecosystems. In lakes, enriched with nutrients, these blooms result in overgrowth of periphyton, leading to biological clogging, oxygen depletion, and ultimately a decline in ecosystem's health and water quality. In this article, we presented a mathematical model centered around the role of aquatic species (specifically fish population) to alleviate algal blooms. The model analysis revealed significant shifts in dynamics, shedding light on the effectiveness of fish-mediated sustainability strategies to control algal proliferation. Notably, our study identified critical thresholds and regime transitions through the observation of saddle-node bifurcation within the proposed mathematical model. To validate our analytical findings, we have conducted numerical simulations, which provided robust evidence for the resilience of the ecosystem under different scenarios.

Abstract We investigate the medium modifications in mass and decay width of $$\phi $$ ϕ meson in the presence of an external magnetic field. The in-medium mass of $$\phi $$ ϕ meson has been calculated using the decay process $$\phi $$ ϕ $$\rightarrow $$ → $$K {\bar{K}}$$ K K ¯ at one-loop level. The medium modifications are introduced by using a chiral SU(3) model employing a mean-field effective approach. Due to the introduction of the magnetic field, masses of charged $$K^+$$ K + and $$K^-$$ K - increases with advancing magnetic field values. A negligible change in the value of neutral $$K^0$$ K 0 and $${\bar{K}}^0$$ K ¯ 0 has been observed for varying magnetic fields. Due to electromagnetic interactions with charged K and $${\bar{K}}$$ K ¯ mesons, there is a gradual augmentation in the effective mass of $$\phi $$ ϕ meson. The probability of the mentioned decay process ceases to be zero for low density and strangeness fraction values at higher magnetic field values. Investigating the decay width and effective mass of $$\phi $$ ϕ meson under the influence of an external magnetic field is relevant to understanding the hadronic matter properties under extreme conditions achievable at heavy-ion collision experiments.

Abstract Green nanotechnology offers several possibilities to bridge the nano and sustainability domains and help us achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and address major global concerns. In this review, we detail the fundamentals and applications of GNT toward SDGs goals. This includes energy production, pollution abatement, water treatment, and eco-friendly agricultural practices. The discussion includes challenges related to legal, ethical and safety aspects as well as limits of the technology. Prospects call for collaborative efforts across various disciplines and policy guidelines in bridging eco-friendly nanotechnology with UN SDGs. We hope that the insights provided in this review can help guide future research and policies toward more environmentally responsible practices, improving global environmental stewardship with a special emphasis on nanotechnology. Context Each year, about 21 million girls aged 15–19 in developing regions experience pregnancy, posing significant challenges for their health, well-being, and economic stability due to its vast impact. Aim To identify the risk factors contributing to teenage pregnancy as compared to Pregnancy in pregnant women in the rural area of the Khordha district with the assessment of their knowledge and, health-seeking behaviour (Contraception and STDs) among teenage and adult pregnant women in the study area. Settings and Design Hospital-based case-control study conducted at Bhubaneswar’s Community Health Centre. Material and Methods The study, conducted from April to July 2022, recruited 138 participants using consecutive sampling and interviewed them using a pretested semi-structured questionnaire. Statistical Analysis Chi-square and logistic regression assessed association and strength. Results Factors contributing to teenage pregnancy include education below high school (AOR = 2.46; 95%CI 0.89–6.79), SC and ST caste (AOR = 2.34; 95%CI 0.94–5.82), having more than three siblings (AOR = 4.45; 95%CI 1.53–12.96), and lack of communication about sexual issues (AOR = 2.84; 95%CI 1.25–6.39). Awareness of contraceptive methods was 34.8% among cases and 56.5% among controls (p = 0.02). Regarding STD awareness and symptoms, 15.2% of cases and 42.4% of controls were knowledgeable and experienced symptoms (p < 0.01). Conclusions This study suggests that factors such as lower education, minority caste, having more than three siblings, and lack of communication about sexual issues contribute to early pregnancy. These findings could enhance existing ARSH platforms by integrating regular engagement and sensitization efforts.

Introduction: Postoperative sore throat (POST) is a common cause of distress and dissatisfaction after general anesthesia. POST is one of the most distressing symptoms after general anesthesia. Incidence of POST ranges from 14.4% to 90% following laryngoscopy and tracheal intubation. Various drugs with different routes are examined to prevent POST. We intended to compare the effectiveness of nebulized dexamethasone and magnesium sulfate (MgSO4) in decreasing the incidence and severity of POST. Materials and Methods: In this prospective double-blind study, adult patients with either sex undergoing laryngoscopy and intubation for surgery were randomly assigned into dexamethasone (Group D) and MgSO4 (Group M). The primary outcome was to assess incidence and severity of POST, and secondary outcome was to assess the incidence of hoarseness and cough. Continuous variables were presented as mean ± standard deviation, and t-test was applied for comparing the difference of means between the two groups. P ≤0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The incidence of POST in Group D was much lower as compared to Group M at 0 h (P = 0.0262), but after that, there was no significant difference between groups. Severity of POST was compared between Group D and Group M at 0, 4, 8, 12, and 24 h postoperatively. At 0 h, Group D had 22 patients with no pain at rest (Grade 0) whereas Group M had 12 patients. The secondary outcomes (pain at deglutition, hoarseness, and cough) at 0, 4, 8, 12, and 24 h were not statistically significant (P > 0.05). Conclusions: Preoperative MgSO4 nebulization is as effective as dexamethasone nebulization in decreasing the incidence and severity of POST without causing any adverse effect. Incidence of pain on deglutition, hoarseness, and cough are also reduced effectively by both drugs.

Abstract Background Sustainable crop production along with best nutrient use efficiency is the key indicator of smart agriculture. Foliar application of plant nutrients can complement soil fertilization with improved nutrient uptake, translocation and utilization. Recent developments in slow releasing, nano-fertilizers in agriculture, begins a new era for sustainable use and management of natural resources. This study aims to explore the effectiveness of nano-nitrogen usage on plant growth, yield attributes and sustaining rice production while optimizing fertilizer N application through conventional (prilled urea) and nano-N source under salt stress conditions. Results The strategic substitutions of traditional urea by nano-nitrogen was distributed from partial to complete with 33, 50, 66 and 100% applications. Further, the strategic substitutions were compared in saline (ECe ∼ 6.0 dSm− 1) and sodic stress (pH ∼ 9.1) conditions along with normal soils to dissect the beneficial response of nano-N in two rice varieties (CSR 30 and PB 1121). Salt stress affected the plant performance by decreasing leaf relative water content upto 10%, total chlorophyll content by 1.3–1.5%, leaf area upto 29.9%, gas exchange attributes by 10–39%, with concomitant yield reductions upto ∼ 4%. Collateral improvement in leaf greenness (SPAD index) crop growth rate and net assimilation rate was observed with foliar application of Nano-N. 0.2–1.64% enhancement in growth traits, 0.93–1.85% in physiological traits, and comparable yield gains with 100% recommended dose of prilled were comparative with nano-substitutions. Salt tolerant rice variety, CSR-30 performed better than PB 1121 with better expression of morphological, physiological and yield traits under stress conditions and nitrogen substitutions. Conclusions Overall, our experimental findings revealed agricultural use of nano-N in improving the plant physiological efficiency and optimizing rice yields with partial N substitution through nano fertilizers under salt stress conditions. These studies are further open for futuristic aspects of long term effects of nano-fertilizers on soil nutrient depletion in correlation to yield enhancement in salt affected soils.

Water scarcity and labor shortage pose significant challenges in rice farming. Direct-seeded rice (DSR) is an efficient method that conserves water, reduces labor costs, and allows for full mechanization of cultivation. However, variable planting depth in undulated field leading to deep/shallow sowing of rice seeds during mechanical sowing presents a major hurdle, as existing varieties lack tolerance to deep sowing. To address this, a mapping population comprising 150 F4 lines, derived from MTU 1010 and AUS295, was developed and phenotyped for emergence from deep soil depth-related traits, including days of emergence (DE), percent germination (PG), mesocotyl length (ML), and coleoptile length (CL). The correlation revealed that DE has a significant negative correlation with PG, ML, and CL, whereas PG, ML, and CL are all positively correlated with each other. The mapping population was genotyped with mid-density SNP assay (1k-RiCA), and a linkage map was established with 414 polymorphic SNP markers. A total of 16 QTLs were identified for four traits, with phenotypic variance explained (PVE) ranging from 6.63% to 19.6% in the WS22. These included 5 QTLs for DE, 3 QTLs for PG, 4 QTLs for ML, and 4 QTLs for CL. Out of 16 QTLs identified, 12 were major effect QTLs (qDE1.2, qDE1.3, qDE1.4, qDE2.1, qDE12, qPG2.1, qPG2.2, qML2.1, qML2.2, qCL1, qCL2.2, qCL2.3) and 4 were minor effect QTLs (qPG1, qML1.2, qCL2.1). During DS23 season, QTL analysis for DE and PG traits identified seven and three QTLs, respectively. Out of the ten QTLs identified in DS23 season, eight were stable across the season. This study reported 11 novel QTLs, while 7 had been previously reported. The study pinpointed three QTL hotspot regions: one on chromosome 1 (qPG1, qCL1) and two on chromosome 2 (qPG2.1, qML2.2, qCL2.1) and (qPG2.2, qCL2.2). Candidate gene analysis in the identified QTL regions found two genes associated with hormonal pathways: OsSLR1 for gibberellin signaling and OsSAUR11 for abscisic acid signaling. Additionally, one gene (OsMT3a) associated with early seedling vigor and another (OsABA8ox1) regulates germination through coleoptile growth. The identified QTLs, genes, and breeding lines from this study provide valuable resources for developing rice varieties with enhanced tolerance to deep soil emergence, making them well-suited for mechanized DSR systems.

Background The avoidable causes of infant mortality should be identified, and interventions should be made to improve the infant mortality rate. The cause of infant deaths should be assessed in both medical and social contexts.Objectives We aimed to determine the medical causes of infant mortality by verbal autopsy and its determinants in two rural blocks of the Khordha district of Odisha and assess the pathway of care and delay in seeking care for the illness preceding infant death using the three-delay model.Design We conducted this community-based matched case-control study to identify the medical causes of infant mortality using the verbal autopsy method along with the identification of delay and pathway of care related to infant deaths using a social autopsy method.Settings Two rural blocks of Odisha, India.Participants We enumerated 100 infant deaths by active surveillance and data triangulation from Accredited Social Health Activists, Auxiliary Nurse Midwives and block-level health information systems. We selected an equal number of alive infants matched with cases in a 1:1 ratio with regard to age, gender and residential address.Outcome measures We conducted the verbal autopsy using the Sample Registration System verbal autopsy tool, where the cause of death ascertainment was done by two independently trained physicians followed by adjudication by one senior trained physician in case of conflicts. We used the prevalidated International Network for the Demographic Evaluation of Population and Their Health tool to assess three delays and pathways of care related to infant deaths.Results Most infant deaths (70%) happened during the first day of life, and almost 50% of neonatal deaths occurred during the first week of life. The three most common causes of infant mortality were birth asphyxia (30%), pneumonia (18%), prematurity and low birth weight (14%). Larger family size (>5) and the education status of fathers till class 10 were significant determinants of infant mortality. Among the 49 infants whose illnesses were identified at home, 2 died at home without receiving any care. Formal or informal care was sought for 32 and 8 infants, respectively. The median delay was found to be 24 hours for level 1 delay. Level 1 delay was observed for 20 cases (40.8%), with more than 24 hours in decision-making in care-seeking. Thirty-seven (75.5%) sick infants reached the healthcare facility 30 min after deciding to seek care.Conclusion Birth asphyxia, pneumonia prematurity and low birth weight were found to be the common causes of infant mortality, with larger family sizes and lower education status among fathers being the significant determinants of infant mortality. We observed a significant delay in decision-making regarding seeking care among caregivers of sick infants.

Background Trichoderma spp. hold significant potential as biocontrol agents in agriculture due to their antagonistic properties against plant pathogens. The study aimed to characterize and identify Trichoderma isolates from rhizospheric regions of vegetable crops. Methods In this study, Trichoderma isolates were collected from rhizospheric soil samples of vegetable crops from different ecological zones and were selected for comprehensive morphological and molecular characterization. The isolates were visually assessed for colony color, growth pattern, aerial mycelium presence, phialide and conidial morphology, and chlamydospore presence. Molecular analysis was employed based on ITS and tef-1α sequences. Diversity indices were also computed for different ecological zones. Results The morphological characteristics and phylogenetic trees for both regions provided a clear species resolution, with four main clades: Harzianum, Viride, Brevicompactum and Longibrachiatum with 12 species T. harzinaum, T. afroharzianum, T. lentiforme, T. inhamatum, T. camerunense, T. azevedoi, T. atroviride, T. asperellum, T. asperelloides, T. koningii, T. longibrachiatum and T. brevicompactum and nine species as a new country record. Diversity indices indicated that high mountain regions displayed the highest species diversity and evenness (H = 1.724 [0.28], J = 0.84, D = 0.28), followed by hilly regions (H = 1.563 [0.28], J = 0.72, D = 0.28). Plains, on the other hand, exhibited lower species diversity (H = 1.515, J = 0.66, D = 0.33). The calculated species abundance values showed that plains (E = 2.11), mid-hills (E = 1.95), and high mountains (E = 1.99) each had their unique diversity profiles. Notably, T. afroharzianum and T. asperellum were predominant. Conclusions Overall, the study unveiled a rich diversity of Trichoderma species in different agricultural zones of Nepal. These findings shed light on the ecological distribution and diversity of Trichoderma spp., which could have significant implications for sustainable agriculture and biological control strategies.

Skin aging, often called as premature skin aging, is the hastened deterioration of the skin resulting from multiple factors, including UV radiation, environmental contaminants, inadequate nutrition, stress, etc. Dietary phytochemicals, present in fruits, vegetables, and other plant-derived meals, have gained interest due to their efficiency to eradicate free radicals and lowering the release of inflammatory mediators which accounts for premature skin aging. Several dietary phytochemicals, i.e., carotenoids, polyphenols, flavonoids, terpenes, alkaloids, phytosterols, etc., exhibited potential anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, suppression of UV damage, and promote collagen synthesis. In addition, dietary phytochemicals include sulfur, present in various foods safeguard the skin against oxidative stress and inflammation. Thus, this article delves into the comprehension of various dietary phytochemicals investigated to alleviate the premature skin aging. The article further highlights specific phytochemicals and their sources, bioavailability, mechanisms, etc., in the context of safeguarding the skin against oxidative stress and inflammation. The present manuscript is a systematic comprehension of the available literature on dietary phytochemicals and skin aging in various database, i.e., PubMed, ScienceDirect, Google Scholar using the keywords, i.e., “dietary phytochemicals”, “nutraceuticals”, “skin aging” etc., via Boolean operator, i.e., “AND”. The dietary guidelines presented in the manuscript is a unique summarization for a broad reader to understand the inclusion of various functional foods, nutrients, supplements, etc., to prevent premature skin aging. Thus, the utilization of dietary phytochemicals has shown a promising avenue in preventing skin aging, however, the future perspectives and challenges of such phytochemicals should be comprehended via clinical investigations.

In the rapid climate change scenario and subsequent rainfall patterns, drought has emerged as a bottleneck for crop production across crops, especially in rainfed rice. Drought significantly affects the development and production of most modern rice cultivars. Thus, recent breeding efforts have aimed to integrate drought tolerance traits in existing rice varieties through conventional and molecular approaches. The identification of grain yields quantitative trait loci (QTLs) under drought conditions, an important trait with high selection efficiency, may lead to the development of drought-tolerant rice varieties. The study reported the grain yield QTLs identified under the reproductive stage of drought stress in the F2-derived mapping population from Kasturi (drought-sensitive) × Chao Khaw (drought-tolerant). Thirteen QTLs (qDTYs) were identified based on two years of field data. Comparative analysis revealed two robust and consistent DTY QTLs, qDTY1.1 and qDTY8.1, which explained the PVEs of 11.61% to 12.88% and 15.79% to 18.77%, respectively. However, qDTY1.1 was found at the nearest position to the previously identified qDTYs. Through candidate gene analysis, the identified QTL regions in chromosome 1 (qDTY1.1) and chromosome 8 (qDTY8.1) revealed seven and five candidate genes, respectively, based on gene ontology that were significantly associated with rice grain yield-related drought traits. In conclusion, this study identified key consistent drought yield QTLs in a drought-tolerant exotic landrace. The identified QTLs provide valuable insights and resources for ongoing efforts to develop drought-tolerant rice varieties. They can be further utilized in drought breeding programs to enhance the drought resilience of existing varieties or to develop new varieties.

Most of the food packaging materials used in the market are petroleum-based plastics; such materials are neither biodegradable nor environmentally friendly and require years to decompose. To overcome these problems, biodegradable and edible materials are encouraged to be used because such materials degrade quickly due to the actions of bacteria, fungi, and other environmental effects. The present study examined that starch can be effectively used as raw material to develop biodegradable, edible films. In this regard, Raw papaya and Citrus Peel were chosen to make biodegradable plastic film blended with corn starch. Raw papaya powder was combined with citrus peel powder for the development of film in treatments of T1, T2, T3, T4 and T5. RPP and CPP blend with Corn starch (CS) to maximize the film-forming properties and characteristics. The films were subjected to various parameter analysis like thickness, optical properties and barrier properties. As per the results, T3 was an optimized film, as it had minimum thickness (0.26 ± 0.01), high tensile strength (5.79 ± 0.12), elongation at break of 11.92 ± 0.03, High transparency (1.42 ± 0.06), and high degradation temperature. From the results, it is inferred that the prepared films are ideally suitable for food packaging and their production on a larger scale can considerably cut down the plastic wastage.

Pneumococcal infection among adults is associated with invasive disease and poor outcomes. Pneumococcal vaccine (PCV) introduction has significantly reduced disease burden, invasive disease and reduced the rates of antimicrobial resistance. Of the various vaccines licensed, PCV 13 and PPSV 23 are available for use in India. Pneumococcal vaccination is suggested for people aged 19–64 years with immunosuppression, chronic cardiac, lung and hepatic disease, impaired splenic function, uncontrolled diabetes mellitus, current smokers, and those abusing alcohol. It is recommended that people >65 years of age are vaccinated with PPSV23. The suggested regimen is to administer PCV13 followed by PPSV23 after one year. The vaccines have minimal side effects and tolerated well. Data on vaccine effectiveness from Indian studies is limited. Hence, documenting population demographics with surveillance on serotype specific pneumococcal disease burden in adults is needed. Following this, studies on safety, immunogenicity, and cost-effectiveness of the available vaccines need to be designed and implemented. It is suggested that in the initial phase, PCV needs to be made available for high-risk population followed by vaccination roll-out for adult population of India.

India is the third-largest energy consumer globally, heavily reliant on imported oil. Projections suggest India's energy consumption will double by 2050, posing challenges to energy security and leading to significant foreign currency outflows. The extensive use of fossil fuels increases carbon emissions, raising environmental and health concerns. In this context, bioethanol production from potatoes offers a promising solution. This paper presents a SWOT analysis of this potential.Strengths include potatoes' widespread availability, high starch content, and compatibility with existing infrastructure. However, weaknesses such as seasonal cultivation, water-intensive farming, and competition with food demand require strategic solutions. Opportunities for bioethanol production from potatoes are numerous, including rural development, reduced fossil fuel reliance, and supportive governmental policies promoting renewable energy. Yet, threats like market fluctuations, technological limitations, and environmental issues related to land use and water consumption challenge the feasibility of this venture.This SWOT analysis provides insights into the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats associated with bioethanol production from potatoes in India, highlighting the potential and challenges of this renewable energy pathway.

Agricultural productivity in semi-arid regions is constrained by soil and groundwater salinity. This study quantified the desalinization potential of cut-soiler-constructed preferential shallow sub-surface drainage (PSSD) and its impact on crop performance in saline agroecologies. The study was conducted at the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR)-Central Soil Salinity Research Institute, Karnal, India, from 2019-2021. The rice residue-filled PSSD was simulated manually (60 cm depth) in a split-split plot experiment with saline and normal soil under saline water irrigation (4, 8, and 12 dS m-1). Cut-soiler PSSD were constructed in the middle of the lysimeter using rice residue (equivalent to 6 Mg ha-1) as the filling material with an outlet to quantify salt and water outflow. Pearl millet [Pennisetum glaucum L. (R. Br)], variety HHB-197, and mustard (Brassica juncea L.), variety CS-58, were grown in the rainy (Kharif) and winter (Rabi) seasons, respectively. The soil salinity profile decreased by 23.3%-58.5% with cut-soiler PSSD in different soils. The decrease in salinity was associated with increased plant height, dry matter accumulation (DMA), net assimilation rate (NAR), crop growth rate (CGR), relative growth rate (RGR), leaf area (LA), and leaf area Index (LAI) in both crops. The pearl millet and mustard yield increases in the two soil types were 11.6%-43.3% and 26%-36%, respectively using saline water up to 12 dS m-1. This study concludes that cut-soiler PSSD can effectively mitigate salinity stress and utilize saline water at the farm scale in salt-affected semi-arid agro-eco-regions.

The by-products of the grain processing industry are a vital resource for the valorization methods in the food industry. In comparison to the whole grain, the broken kernels and seeds own similar nutrient and bioactive compounds having multifaceted health properties. This study aims to develop a nutritional bar by utilizing the by-products from barnyard millet and foxnut with added sweeteners. Furthermore, high-resolution mass spectrometry (HR-MS) metabolomics was carried out in positive and negative both ion modes to identify the major bioactive compounds formed in the matrix of the best-optimized valorized bar. The formulation of the bar having 15 % foxnut flour and the barnyard flour each, was elucidated highest rheological and sensory scores. A sum of 29 bioactive metabolites has been observed in the obtained metabolome. Major metabolites were palmitoyl serinol, glycitein, persin, bufagargarizin, apigenin, carvone, etc. covering a wide area in the mass spectrum. The therapeutic value of these compounds is heart health promotion, anti-inflammatory, anti-carcinogenic, anti-diabetic, anti-microbial, etc. This work highlights the bioactivity of the valorized nutritional bar employing robust and accurate tool of mass spectrometry. The developed snack is a functional food for the consumers.

Melanoma is a type of skin cancer that poses significant health risks and requires early detection for effective treatment. This study proposing a novel approach that integrates a transformer-based model with hand-crafted texture features and Gray Wolf Optimization, aiming to enhance efficiency of melanoma classification. Preprocessing involves standardizing image dimensions and enhancing image quality through median filtering techniques. Texture features, including GLCM and LBP, are extracted to capture spatial patterns indicative of melanoma. The GWO algorithm is applied to select the most discriminative features. A transformer-based decoder is then employed for classification, leveraging attention mechanisms to capture contextual dependencies. The experimental validation on the HAM10000 dataset and ISIC2019 dataset showcases the effectiveness of the proposed methodology. The transformer-based model, integrated with hand-crafted texture features and guided by Gray Wolf Optimization, achieves outstanding results. The results showed that the proposed method performed well in melanoma detection tasks, achieving an accuracy and F1-score of 99.54% and 99.11% on the HAM10000 dataset, and an accuracy of 99.47%, and F1-score of 99.25% on the ISIC2019 dataset.• We use the concepts of LBP and GLCM to extract features from the skin lesion images.• The Gray Wolf Optimization (GWO) algorithm is employed for feature selection.• A decoder based on Transformers is utilized for melanoma classification.

We calculate the valence quark transverse momentum-dependent parton distributions (TMDs) of the lightest pseudoscalar meson, pions, in isospin asymmetric nuclear matter at zero temperature by employing a light-cone quark model. The medium modifications in the pion unpolarized TMDs are induced through the effective quark masses computed using the chiral SU(3) quark mean field model. The spin densities at different momentum fraction (x) have also been calculated at different baryonic densities.

Portal hypertension, a known complication of liver cirrhosis, typically leads to variceal bleeding in the esophagus and stomach. However, ectopic varices can also occur outside the gastroesophageal region and may present with life-threatening massive bleeding. We report a case of bleeding ileal ectopic varices in a patient with cirrhosis that were not detected during routine endoscopy. These varices were ultimately diagnosed with the aid of abdominal computed tomography. A transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) was created to decrease portal pressure, and the TIPS tract was then used to selectively embolize the bleeding ectopic ileal varices.

Abstract Intestinal barrier is a first line of defense that prevents entry of various harmful substances from the lumen into the systemic environment. Impaired barrier function with consequent translocation of harmful substances into systemic circulation (“leaky gut”) is a central theme in many gastrointestinal, autoimmune, mental, and metabolic diseases. Probiotics have emerged as a promising strategy to maintain intestinal integrity and address “leaky gut”. Using in silico, in vitro and avian in vivo analyses, we previously showed that two novel L. reuteri strains, PTA-126787 (L. reuteri 3630) and PTA-126788 (L. reuteri 3632), isolated from broiler chickens possess favorable safety profiles. Consistent with a recent study, here we show that L. reuteri 3630 and 3632 are phylogenetically similar to human L. reuteri strains. Daily administration of high doses of L. reuteri 3630 and 3632 to Sprague Dawley rats for 28 days was found to be safe with no adverse effects. More importantly, administration of L. reuteri 3630 and 3632 significantly reduced markers associated with alcohol-induced leaky gut, by downregulating inflammatory cytokines and upregulating anti-inflammatory cytokines in an alcohol model of leaky gut in mice. While L. reuteri 3630 cells and supernatant showed no activation, L. reuteri 3632 cells but not supernatant showed activation of AhR, a key transcription factor that regulates gut and immune homeostasis. L. reuteri 3630 is creamish white in morphology typical of Lactobacillus species and L. reuteri 3632 displays a unique orange pigmentation, which was stable even after passaging for 480 generations. We identified a rare polyketide biosynthetic gene cluster in L. reuteri 3632 that likely encodes for the orange-pigmented secondary metabolite. Similar to L. reuteri 3632 cells, the purified orange metabolite activated AhR. All together, these data provide evidence on the phylogenetic relatedness, safety, efficacy, and one of the likely mechanisms of action of L. reuteri 3630 and 3632 for potential probiotic applications to address “leaky gut” and associated pathologies in humans.

This study aims to identify normal radiographic anthropometry reference values and variations of carpal bones and joints by gender and age in sample Indian population, with the potential to be clinically applicable.

Abstract In recent years, regulatory agencies have raised concerns about the presence of potentially carcinogenic substances in certain formulations of Angiotensin Receptor Blockers (ARBs). Specifically, nitrosamines and azido compounds have been identified in some ARB products. Nitrosamines are known to have carcinogenic properties and are associated with an increased risk of neoplasms. Spontaneous safety reports from the EudraVigilance Data Analysis System (EVDAS) database were analyzed to investigate cases of neoplasms associated with ARBs. A disproportionality analysis was conducted, calculating the reporting odds ratio (ROR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) using a case/non-case approach for each ARB drug. The EVDAS database contained 68,522 safety reports related to ARBs (including Azilsartan, Candesartan, Irbesartan, Olmesartan, Losartan, Valsartan, and Telmisartan), among which 3,396 (5%) cases were associated with neoplasms. The majority of these cases were reported in Germany (11.9%), followed by France (9.7%). Approximately 70% of the reports were submitted by healthcare professionals such as physicians and nurses. Among the ARBs, valsartan had the highest ROR for neoplasm (ROR 1.949, 95% CI 1.857–2.046). This association remained significant when comparing ARBs with other classes of antihypertensive drugs, including ACE inhibitors, beta-blockers, calcium channel blockers, and diuretics. Our study identifies a possible signal of an association between ARBs, particularly valsartan, and the risk of neoplasms. However, further observational and analytical studies are necessary to confirm these findings and elucidate the underlying mechanisms.

Abstract Background Improving the rate of genetic gain of cereal crop will rely on the accelerated crop breeding pipelines to allow rapid delivery of improved crop varieties. The laborious, time-consuming traditional breeding cycle, and the seasonal variations are the key factor restricting the breeder to develop new varieties. To address these issues, a revolutionized cost-effective speed breeding protocol for large-scale rice germplasm advancement is presented in the present study. The protocol emphasises on optimizing potting material, balancing the double-edged sword of limited nutritional dose, mode and stage of application, plant density, temperature, humidity, light spectrum, intensity, photoperiod, and hormonal regulation to accelerate rice growth and development. Silver oak, Grevillea robusta A. Cunn. is an important exotic tree species component of urban forestry in India. However, the occurrence of insect-pests in exotics causes tremendous impact on the production and yield in nurseries as well-established plantations; consequently, reducing profits and inducing high expense to stakeholders. Thus, a detailed account of insect-pests infestation and their impact becomes important. Therefore, present study was undertaken to find out the insect pest occurrence on G. robusta in the nursery, plantation established at different geographical region of northern India from 2018-2022. The study result exhibited infestation of ten insect-pests for the first time on G. robusta. Six species were defoliator in nature viz. Ascotis selenaria, Chrysodeixis includens, Ectropis bhurmitra, Helicoverpa armigera, Hyposidra talaca, and Olene inclusa; while infestation of four species of sap sacking nature viz. Asterolecanium sp., Ceroplastes rusci, Drosicha stebbingi, and Oxyrachis tarandus. The seasonal incidence and nature of damage were also recorded for the first time of these insects on G. robusta. This is the first attempt to report insect-pests of G. robusta, which gave an overview of the possible potential threat in India. The study would be beneficial for future reference with respect to pest management of G. robusta, when the species is taken up for tree improvement program in the long run.

This study presents a novel approach for simultaneous inversion of the key reservoir parameters like horizontal permeability, vertical permeability, skin, and boundary distances for spatial distribution across the grid cells in a 3D single well reservoir model (SWRM). These parameters are first estimated from the standard pressure transient analysis of well test pressure and rate data, which also act as a priori for the inverse problem. A field-worthy layer cake geological model is prepared based on the prior information obtained from pressure transient analysis, followed by a sequential flow simulation of field well test operation. The simulation results provide the model pressure versus rate data as the synthetic data for this study. A cost function is defined incorporating the well test pressure data and model pressure data, which would determine the convergence. The inversion process is to optimize the spatial distribution of reservoir parameters to minimize the difference between the measured pressure transient data and the modelled one, which is obtained from the multiphase fluid flow simulator that solves the implicit black-oil fluid-flow diffusivity equations at every step. A Gauss-Newton (GN) inversion scheme is used for the inversion. The reliability of inversion results depends on the accuracy of priori reservoir parameters fed to the solver, which can be refined if required through uncertainty parameter optimization (UPO). This approach helps to obtain a faster and reliable update of reservoir parameters in a layer cake homogeneous geomodel, hereby introducing the required heterogeneity. This increases the confidence and reliability of a geomodel, which is further used for various production prediction strategies.

Solar cells based on a dye as a sensitizer have compelling importance in the field of energy conversion. New developments in this rapidly expanding area are continuously appearing in literature based on dye as a sensitizer for the new type of solar cells with improved efficiency. Therefore, the current review is focused on a different aspect of solar cells and studies to evaluate their efficiencies in harvesting solar energy. The review summarizes stepwise advancements in the solar cell with a merocyanine as sensitizer from the point of origin to the current status. Various attempts to improve the efficiency of solar cells using merocyanine derivatives as sensitizers including the use of natural as well as synthetic dyes and their different substitutes have been discussed. Besides, review have also included the use of nanomaterials with merocyanine dyes to improve the efficiency of solar cells. So here, we have summarized all types of solar cell parameters and their role in energy conversion.

Background: The present study is aimed to investigate the anti-inflammatory activities of thirteen substituted-isoxazole derivatives (5a–5m). Isoxazole is a key pharmacophore in medicinal chemistry, known for its broad range of pharmacological activities.This study explores the synthesis and anti-inflammatory potential of thirteen substituted-isoxazole derivatives (5a–5m), with 5c, 5d, 5e, and 5g being novel compounds. Objectives: The primary objectives were to synthesize some novel substituted isoxazole derivatives, evaluate their interaction with cyclooxygenase (COX-1/2) enzymes through computational methods, and assess their anti-inflammatory effectiveness in laboratory animals. Methods: Substituted chalcones (0.01 mol) (2a-2m), sodium ethoxide (0.01 mol), and hydroxylamine hydrochloride (0.01 mol) were dissolved in absolute ethanol (15 ml), and then the mixture was refluxed for 6 h in an oil bath and monitored by TLC (ethyl acetate:hexane 7:3 v/v as eluent; a UV lamp was used to visualize the plates). After the completion of the reaction, as per TLC, the contents of the reaction mixture were poured into ice-cold water (50 ml). The obtained precipitates were filtered, washed two times, dried for 2 h at room temperature, and then recrystallized with ethenol. The structures of these compounds were confirmed via Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) spectroscopy, carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance (13C NMR) spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry. Anti-inflammatory activity was evaluated using the carrageenan-induced rat paw edema method. Results: The results indicated that three compounds (5b, 5c, and 5d) demonstrated significant in vivo anti-inflammatory potential (% edema inhibition 75.68, 74.48, & 71.86 in 2 h and 76.71, 75.56, & 72.32 in 3 h) with modest effectiveness (0.83, 0.81 & 0.71), low toxicity, and minimal adverse effects. The molecular docking analyses further elucidated the interaction with the active site COX-2 enzyme (PDB ID: 4COX) using Autodock Vina. The compounds 5b, 5c, and 5d −8.7, −8.5, and −8.4 indicate good binding affinity (kcal/mol) and H-bond interaction with residues such as Cys41, Ala151, and Arg120 for COX-2, which also carried out RMSD values of 2.174, 41.13, and 22.25, which are decisive for the reported anti-inflammatory activity of diverse compounds. Conclusions: The findings indicate that isoxazole derivatives have modest antiinflammatory potential, with compounds (5b, 5c, and 5d) acting as lead molecules to be studied further for pain relief with fewer adverse effects.

Background: Among the various aspects of scapular anatomy, the suprascapular notch has gained attention as its anatomical variation is a predisposing factor for compression of the suprascapular nerve in this region, potentially impacting orthopedic surgery. This study aims to investigate the morphology of suprascapular notch (SSN) and its variation with age and sexual dimorphism. It also seeks to classify and correlate the superior angle of the scapula with the SSN in the Indian population. Methods: A retrospective analysis of 360 computed tomography scans of scapulae of 180 adults was conducted. The morphology of SSN was classified according to Rengachary's classification (types I-VI), and the maximum depth (MD) and maximum width (MW) of SSN were measured. The superior angle of the scapula was classified based on morphological characteristics. Results: Type I SSN was the most prevalent, suggesting lower susceptibility to suprascapular nerve entrapment. Males had significantly greater MD than females. Identical types of SSN and superior angles on both sides of the scapula were statistically significant, though variations on each side were also observed. There was no significant difference in age. The superior angle of the scapula was classified into four types: Hilly, mountain peak, crescent, and chimney, with the hilly type being the most common. No correlation was found between SSN and the superior angle. Conclusion: These findings may provide a comprehensive understanding necessary for accurate diagnoses of related abnormalities and for performing safe and effective endoscopic and open surgical procedures in the suprascapular region.

Introduction: Managing a challenging airway in awake, sedated, or anaesthetised patients has made Fibreoptic Intubation (FOI) using a flexible Fibreoptic Bronchoscope (FOB) a mainstay in clinical practice. Aim: To evaluate and compare fibreoptic nasotracheal intubation with or without Split Nasopharyngeal Airway (SNPA) as a conduit, focusing on time taken, ease of insertion, and haemodynamic changes. Materials and Methods: This randomised controlled study was conducted at the Department of Anaesthesiology and Critical Care, Pt. B.D. Sharma, PGIMS, Rohtak, Haryana, India, on 80 patients who were randomly allocated into two groups: Group CL (the control group without SNPA) and Group NP (with SNPA). Both groups were induced with general anaesthesia, and nostrils were prepared for FOB. In Group CL, a well-lubricated FOB was inserted into the selected nostril without using SNPA, and endotracheal intubation was performed. In Group NP, an appropriately sized SNPA was lubricated and inserted into the selected nostril. The fiberscope was passed through the SNPA, the vocal cords were visualised, and the SNPA was removed before railroading the preloaded tube through the vocal cords to confirm correct placement. The time taken for bronchoscopy and intubation, ease of insertion, haemodynamic parameters, and bleeding were recorded in both groups. The data was coded, entered, and analysed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20.0. A significance level was set at a p-value ≤0.05. Results: Demographic data, including age and gender distribution, mean weight, height, Body Mass Index (BMI), and airway parameters such as Mallampati grading, neck circumference, inter-incisor distance, and ASA grading, were standardised. There was no significant difference between the CL and NP groups regarding these parameters. The time taken for FOB and intubation in Group CL was 2.59±0.96 minutes and 3.61±1.04 minutes, respectively, compared to 1.87±0.91 minutes and 2.51±0.86 minutes in Group NP (p-value=0.001). The time taken to visualise the glottis was also shorter in the NP group (6.70±13.97 minutes) compared to the CL group (24.02±13.06 minutes), which was significant. Fibreoptic bronchoscopy was considered easy in 16 patients (40%) in Group CL and 27 patients (67.5%) in Group NP (p-value=0.04). The increase in mean arterial blood pressure was significantly higher in Group CL than in Group NP just after the insertion of the FOB into the nasopharynx (p-value=0.05). Conclusion: Fibreoptic nasotracheal intubation through an SNPA is less time-consuming and results in easier intubation. It causes less trauma to the nasal passage and leads to fewer haemodynamic variations in terms of mean arterial pressure and heart rate. Hence, SNPA is a better method for facilitating FOI compared to intubation without it.

Wheat is one of the most important food crop cultivated across the globe which ensures sustainability and food security to massive world’s population, but its production is threatened by both biotic factors like rust (caused by Puccinia species) and abiotic stresses such as salinity. In this study, 41 salt-tolerant wheat lines were screened for rust resistance at both seedling and adult plant stages. Rust resistance genes were characterized through gene matching technique and molecular markers analysis. Yr2 was confirmed in 23 lines, while Yr9 along with Lr26/Sr31 were postulated in six lines with the help of SRT and molecular markers. Except for KRL2013, none showed complete resistance to all Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici (Pst). Lr24/Sr24 genes were confirmed in HD2851 and KRL2029, and Lr13 was detected in a maximum of 24 wheat lines, with varying reaction responses to different leaf rust pathotypes. Several lines carried additional resistance genes such as Sr11, Sr28, and Lr68. Lr68 an effective race non-specific APR gene identified in 15 wheat lines with the help of CsGs-STS marker. Although many salt-tolerant wheat lines were susceptible to yellow rust during the seedling stage, a few lines showed APR in the years during 2020 and 2021. Three lines (KRL213, KRL219 and KRL238) showed complete resistance at adult plant stage to leaf rust. These findings offer insights into the genetic basis of rust resistance in salt-tolerant wheat, aiding breeding strategies.

Background: Trace metal deficiency has become a major constraint on the productivity and sustainability of soils. Agriculture becomes more complex, advanced and intensive farming systems develop, however, the deficiency of trace metal are more frequent and extensive in different systems. Methods: This study investigated the variation of trace metal minerals in soil profiles of diverse land use systems (LUSs), i.e. agriculture, horticulture and forestry, falling under three dominant soil orders (Entisol, Inceptisol and Aridisol) in Malwa region of Punjab. Through comprehensive analyses, we explore the intricate relationships between soil characteristics, land use practices, and the distribution of key trace metals—namely zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn). Results: The mean values of DTPA-extractable trace metal from soil profiles of different land uses varied from 1.75 to 2.09, 1.64–2.32, 1.18–1.69 mg kg−1 for Zn; 0.59–1.02, 0.59–0.99, 0.64–0.92 mg kg−1 for Cu; 12.12–16.49, 9.84–16.05, 7.94–11.56 mg kg−1 for Fe; 7.82–9.99, 4.66–9.39, 6.51–7.46 mg kg−1for Mn in soil orders Entisol, Inceptisol and Aridisol, respectively. The concentration of trace metals in different soil orders follows the pattern of ntisol>Inceptisol>Aridisol. In contrast, there is a considerable amount of variation and no discernible pattern in the distribution of trace metals under various LUSs in each soil order. Several LUSs were examined, and agriculture land use system (ALUS) had the greatest Fe and Mn content, while the horticulture land use system (HLUS) had the highest Zn and Cu content. The Irrespective of soil orders and LUSs, the concentration of trace metals decreased as soil depth increased. Diverse LUSs and management practices have a substantial impact on the physico-chemical characteristics of soils, which in turn influence the availability of trace metals. According to the Pearson correlation studies, trace metals were positively associated with soil OC and negatively associated with soil pH, electrical conductivity (EC), and calcium carbonate (CaCO3) and there was also a positive correlation between DTPA-Zn, Cu, Fe, and Mn in the investigated soils. The results of the principal component analysis (PCA) revealed that soil CaCO3 and organic carbon (OC) content were the most variable soil parameters influencing crop trace metal availability in different soil orders and land use systems. Conclusion: The findings contribute to a nuanced understanding of the dynamic interplay between soil properties and land use, providing valuable insights for sustainable agricultural practices and environmental management in the region.

Abstract Background The lack of stable-high yielding and direct-seeded adapted varieties with better germination ability from deeper soil depth and availability of molecular markers are major limitation in achieving the maximum yield potential of rice under water and resource limited conditions. Development of high-throughput and trait-linked markers are of great interest in genomics-assisted breeding. The aim of present study was to develop and validate novel KASP (Kompetitive Allele-Specific PCR) markers associated with traits improving germination and seedling vigor of deep sown direct seeded rice (DSR). Results Out of 58 designed KASP assays, four KASP assays did not show any polymorphism in any of the eleven genetic backgrounds considered in the present study. The 54 polymorphic KASP assays were then validated for their robustness and reliability on the F1s plants developed from eight different crosses considered in the present study. The third next validation was carried out on 256 F3:F4 and 713 BC3F2:3 progenies. Finally, the reliability of the KASP assays was accessed on a set of random 50 samples from F3:F4 and 80–100 samples from BC3F2:3 progenies using the 10 random markers. From the 54 polymorphic KASP, based on the false positive rate, false negative rate, KASP utility in different genetic backgrounds and significant differences in the phenotypic values of the positive (desirable) and negative (undesirable) traits, a total of 12 KASP assays have been selected. These 12 KASP include 5 KASP on chromosome 3, 1 on chromosome 4, 3 on chromosome 7 and 3 on chromosome 8. The two SNPs lying in the exon regions of LOC_Os04g34290 and LOC_Os08g32100 led to non-synonymous mutations indicating a possible deleterious effect of the SNP variants on the protein structure. Conclusion The present research work will provide trait-linked KASP assays, improved breeding material possessing favourable alleles and breeding material in form of expected pre-direct-seeded adapted rice varieties. The marker can be utilized in introgression program during pyramiding of valuable QTLs/genes providing adaptation to rice under DSR. The functional studies of the genes LOC_Os04g34290 and LOC_Os08g32100 possessing two validated SNPs may provide valuable information about these genes.

Dermatofibrosarcoma Protuberans (DFSP) is a rare soft tissue sarcoma distinguished by its infiltrative growth pattern and recurrence potential. Understanding the molecular characteristics of DFSP is essential for enhancing its diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment strategies. The paper provides an overview of DFSP, highlighting the significance of its molecular understanding. The gene expression profiling has uncovered unique molecular signatures in DFSP, highlighting its heterogeneity and potential therapeutic targets. The Platelet-Derived Growth Factor Receptors (PDGFRs) and Fibroblast Growth Factor Receptors (FGFRs) signaling pathways play essential roles in the progression and development of DFSP. The abnormal activation of these pathways presents opportunities for therapeutic interventions. Several emerging therapies, i.e., immunotherapies, immunomodulatory strategies, and immune checkpoint inhibitors, offer promising alternatives to surgical resection. In DFSP management, combination strategies, including rational combination therapies, aim to exploit the synergistic effects and overcome resistance. The article consisting future perspectives and challenges includes the discovery of prognostic and predictive biomarkers to improve risk stratification and treatment selection. Preclinical models, such as Patient-derived xenografts (PDX) and genetically engineered mouse models, help study the biology of DFSP and evaluate therapeutic interventions. The manuscript also covers small-molecule inhibitors, clinical trials, immune checkpoint inhibitors for DFSP treatment, combination therapies, rational therapies, and resistance mechanisms, which are unique and not broadly covered in recent pieces of literature.

Background: Midline laparotomy incisions provide easy and rapid access to the peritoneal cavity in case of emergency surgery and effective closure of the abdominal wall is crucial for optimal healing and reduced complications. Secure abdominal wall closure after any laparotomy is every surgeon’s aim. Aims and Objectives: The aim of the study was to choose the better method of rectus closure by comparing the herringbone stitch technique with the interrupted suturing technique for rectus closure in emergency laparotomy. Materials and Methods: Fifty patients who underwent midline emergency laparotomy at MGM Medical College and MY Hospital, Indore, between January 2023 and April 2023 were included in our study. In 25 patients (Group A) herringbone stitch technique was used whereas in the other 25 patients (Group B) interrupted suturing technique for rectus closure was used and they were assessed based on the incidence of surgical site infection (SSI), superficial wound dehiscence, fascial dehiscence, and incidence of incisional hernia. Results: The incidence of SSI was comparable in both groups but the incidence of superficial wound dehiscence, fascial dehiscence, and incisional hernia is less in Group A. Conclusion: The herringbone stitch technique is better as compared to the interrupted suturing technique for rectus closure in emergency laparotomy.

Abstract The implementation of a laparoscope-holding robot in minimally invasive surgery enhances the efficiency and safety of the operation. However, the extra robot control task can increase the cognitive load on surgeons. A suitable interface may simplify the control task and reduce the surgeon load. Foot interfaces are commonly used for commanding laparoscope-holding robots, with two control strategies available: decoupled control permits only one Cartesian axis actuation, known as decoupled commands; hybrid control allows for both decoupled commands and multiple axes actuation, known as coupled commands. This paper aims to determine the optimal control strategy for foot interfaces by investigating two common assumptions in the literature: (1) Decoupled control is believed to result in better predictability of the final laparoscopic view orientation, and (2) Hybrid control has the efficiency advantage in laparoscope control. Our user study with 11 experienced and trainee surgeons shows that decoupled control has better predictability than hybrid control, while both approaches are equally efficient. In addition, using two surgery-like tasks in a simulator, users’ choice of decoupled and coupled commands is analysed based on their level of surgical experience and the nature of the movement. Results show that trainee surgeons tend to issue more commands than the more experienced participants. Single decoupled commands were frequently used in small view adjustments, while a mixture of coupled and decoupled commands was preferred in larger view adjustments. A guideline for foot interface control strategy selection is provided.

Ischemic stroke, the predominant subtype, relies mainly on recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (rtPA) and endovascular thrombectomy for the treatment. Neurological impairments following ischemic stroke highlight the importance of understanding the interplay between neuroinflammation and neurogenesis in brain repair. Research reveals a complex relationship, where inflammation both promotes and hinders neurogenesis, impacting post-stroke outcomes. The subventricular zone (SVZ) of striatum and sub granular zone (SGZ) in hippocampus play pivotal roles in adult neurogenesis, with distinct characteristics and functions. SVZ neurogenesis involves neuroblast progenitors migrating to the olfactory bulb, while SGZ facilitates granule cell generation for hippocampal function. Understanding the intricate processes of neuroinflammation, neurogenesis, and angiogenesis is crucial for developing effective stroke therapeutics. Promising avenues include drug therapy, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, antibody therapy, angiogenesis stimulation, growth factor therapy, hormone therapy, miRNAs, extracellular vesicles, and neuroprotective agents. Stem cell therapy, exploring various cell types, holds potential for neuronal replacement and recovery. In conclusion, deciphering the roles of SVZ and SGZ in neurogenesis, unraveling the complexity of neuroinflammation’s impact on repair, and exploring diverse therapeutic approaches highlight the need for comprehensive investigations to enhance stroke outcomes. The multifaceted landscape of stroke therapeutics presents challenges, but ongoing research offers promising avenues for bridging the gap between preclinical findings and clinical treatments.

Pleural effusion is a common problem in our country, and most of these patients need invasive tests as they can’t be evaluated by blood tests alone. The simplest of them is diagnostic pleural aspiration, and diagnostic techniques such as medical thoracoscopy are being performed more frequently than ever before. However, most physicians in India treat pleural effusion empirically, leading to delays in diagnosis, misdiagnosis and complications from wrong treatments. This situation must change, and the adoption of evidence-based protocols is urgently needed. Furthermore, the spectrum of pleural disease in India is different from that in the West, and yet Western guidelines and algorithms are used by Indian physicians. Therefore, India-specific consensus guidelines are needed. To fulfil this need, the Indian Chest Society and the National College of Chest Physicians; the premier societies for pulmonary physicians came together to create this National guideline. This document aims to provide evidence based recommendations on basic principles, initial assessment, diagnostic modalities and management of pleural effusions.

Background and Objective: Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is a chronic disease characterized by widespread, persistent musculoskeletal pain in association with impaired health-related quality of life. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is an emerging tool for the management of fibromyalgia. There is no standardized protocol of rTMS for the treatment of FMS, and both low- and high-frequency stimulation of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) are described in the literature with variable efficacy. The objective of this study was to determine the effectiveness of rTMS in people with fibromyalgia and compare the response of low- and high-frequency stimulation with sham stimulation. Materials and Methods: This study was a single-blinded, randomized, placebo-controlled trial. Ninety patients with the diagnosis of FMS were randomly allocated into one of the following three groups: low-frequency (1 Hz) group, high-frequency (10 Hz) group, and sham group. Pain, depression, anxiety, and quality of life were measured using the Numerical Pain Rating Scale (NPRS), Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAM-A), Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS), and Revised Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire (FIQR) immediately following treatment as well as at 1 and 3 months after treatment. The data was statistically analyzed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences version 23 software. P value < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: Intergroup analysis revealed a significant improvement in NPRS, HAM-A, HDRS, and FIQR scores in both low- and high- frequency groups immediately following treatment and for 3 months after treatment. No significant difference in the efficacy of low- and high-frequency stimulation was noticed. Conclusions: rTMS is an effective mode of treatment in people with FMS. Both low and high frequencies of stimulation at DLPFC are equally effective in reducing pain and associated symptoms.

Background: The lung is a respiratory organ in which steady development begins during the embryonic period at 0–7 weeks’ gestation and continues into early childhood. Cardiothoracic surgeries and procedures such as lobectomy, segmental resection of bronchoscopy, require a thorough knowledge of the anatomy of the lung. Study of length, fissures and lobes of the lung can guide the surgeons for the above procedures and help them to prevent undue complications during surgery. Many variations are noted by researchers till date in both the lungs in regards to length, breadth, fissures, and lobes. In the current study, we have also observed variations in fissures of lung. Aims and Objectives: To study the normal length, breadth, and thickness of both sides of lungs, variations in the length, breadth, and thickness of both sides of the lungs. To study the normal fissures, lobes and their variations, of both right and left lungs, and also to study the number of bronchi, pulmonary artery, and pulmonary vein. Materials and Methods: 50 Right and 50 left lungs were obtained from embalmed cadavers, used for dissection in the Department of Anatomy, King George’s Medical University, Lucknow, UP, by using measuring tape and measuring scale. Photography was done by a DSLR camera. Results: The left lung shows maximum variations in the hilum. Out of 50 left lungs, 6 showed the absence of oblique fissures, 2 lungs had 2 arteries, 2 lungs had 2 Veins, and 1 had 2 bronchi. Out of 50 right lungs, 2 lungs showed 2 arteries, 2 lungs had 2 veins, and 2 had 3 bronchi. Conclusion: Knowledge of normal measurements of both sides of the lungs and their variations may help cardiothoracic surgeons avoid complications during surgery and it may help radiologists resolve uncertain radiographic findings.
