Abstract

Search and rescue operations in avalanches can greatly benefit from the support of unmanned aerial vehicles, which could safely and autonomously fly above the snow surface to estimate the position of the victim. This work relies upon the Appareil de Recherche de Victimes (ARVA), which consists of a transmitter and a receiver. The transmitter is worn by the victim and produces an electromagnetic field that can be sensed by the receiver, integrated on the drone. A receiver able to sense the complete 3D electromagnetic field has been developed, whose model and properties are presented in this work. The main contribution of this work is the development of a control algorithm able to drive the ARVA-equipped drone as close as possible to the victim location.

Abstract

Robot Operating System (ROS) framework supports different kind of sensors, typically used to develop robotic applications, such as vision and depth sensors, laser scanners and so on. In this chapter, we present a new ROS package designed to simulate ARVA transceiver sensors: arva_sim. ARVA is a French acronym which stands for Appareil de Recherche de Victims en Avalanche and represents the forefront technology adopted in Search & Rescue operations to localize victims of avalanches buried under the snow. In order to simulate its behavior, this package provides two Gazebo plugins: the transmitter and receiver. The aim of this chapter is to describe the mathematical and theoretical background of the transceiver, discussing its implementation and integration with ROS. To demonstrate the accuracy of the proposed sensor model, we present a simulation scenario in which an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) equipped with the transceiver sensor performs a basic S&R pattern using the output of ARVA system. It is worth nothing that the proposed ROS package, arva_sim, represents the first simulation model of an ARVA transceiver system and can be useful for the developer to design, test and benchmark faster and smarter search strategies to speed up rescue missions in case of avalanches.

Abstract

Congenital Disorders of Glycosylation (CDG) comprise a family of human multi-systemic diseases caused by recessive mutations in genes required for protein N-glycosylation. More than 100 distinct forms of CDGs have been identified and most of them cause severe neurological impairment. The Conserved Oligomeric Golgi (COG) complex mediates tethering of vesicles carrying glycosylation enzymes across the Golgi cisternae. Mutations affecting human COG1, COG2, COG4-COG8 cause monogenic forms of inherited, autosomal recessive, CDGs. We have generated a Drosophila COG7-CDG model which closely parallels the pathological characteristics of COG7-CDG patients including pronounced neuromotor defects associated with altered N-glycome profiles. Consistent with these alterations, larval neuromuscular junctions of Cog7 mutants exhibit a significant reduction of bouton numbers. We further demonstrate that the COG complex cooperate with Rab1 and Golgi phosphoprotein 3, to regulate Golgi trafficking and that overexpression of Rab1 can rescue the cytokinesis defects and the locomotor defects associated with loss of Cog7. Our results altogether suggest that the Drosophila COG7-CDG model can be used to test novel potential therapeutic strategies by modulating trafficking pathways.

Abstract

Aquest Treball Final de Grau tracta de la creació d’un Aparell de Recerca de Víctimes d’Allaus (en sigles, ARVA o també anomenat DVA). Sent un equip multidisciplinari de 7 membres (3 del grau de Disseny, 3 del grau d’Enginyeria Informàtica i una persona d’Enginyeria Mecànica) i seguint metodologies Agile, (metodologia que es basa en la iteració contínua del producte o codi tenint en compte unes necessitats que van canviant al llarg del temps) l’ànim d’aquest producte és la ideació d’un dispositiu DVA en tots els seus apartats (disseny estructural, distribució d’elements, electrònica i informàtica) vetllant que aquest dispositiu compleixi amb les normatives actuals i presenti un avanç (tant funcional com tecnològic) en la categoria dels aparells ARVA. Inicialment, l’objectiu és crear i dissenyar la carcassa i les característiques físiques d’un DVA (tenint en compte la normativa pertinent) així com la distribució dels seus elements interns sota criteris d’usabilitat i estètica (entre altres). Paral·lelament desenvolupar un prototip físic amb components funcionals i implementar un codi que els permeti realitzar les mateixes funcions que realitza un ARVA comercial. Així doncs, segons el plantejament Scrum, (conjunt de bones pràctiques de treball en equip) el producte s’ha anat incrementant mitjançant Sprints (períodes curts de desenvolupament). Alhora, l’equip de desenvolupament ha anat seguint les directrius d’un client, Eloi Martínez, director general de l’empresa Atmosferia. qui ha anat seguint el projecte des de l’inici i ha anat donant les seves idees, recomanacions i directrius respecte a les característiques o el disseny del producte, simulant el cas d’una empresa real. During these 20 seasons, among the 2195 persons swept by avalanches, 556 have been killed and 521 have been wounded. This work deals with the statistical distribution of the main parameters: burying depth and duration, types and causes of avalanches, types of activity, mortality rate per activity, means of victim localization. Mountain skiing, off-piste skiing and ARVA's are studied in detail. Even though the number of avalanche accidents and deaths changes drastically from one year to another depending on the winter conditions, an increase for entertainment activities, mainly off-piste and mountain skiing, has been observed. Finally, the ARVA's positive influence has been obvious since 1982: the percentage of saved victimes increases regularly., Depuis la création de l'ANENA fin 1971, la France enregistre tous les accidents graves d'avalanche avec le maximum d'informations. Cette étude concerne les 718 accidents enregistrés d'octobre 1971 à septembre 1990. Au cours de ces 20 saisons, sur 2195 personnes emportées, 566 ont été tuées et 521 blessées. Ce travail s'intéresse à la répartition statistique des principaux paramètres : profondeur et durée d'enfouissement des victimes, types d'avalanche et causes de déclenchement,répartition géographique des accidents, catégories d'activité, taux de mortalité par activité, moyens de localisation des victimes. Le ski de montagne, le ski hors piste et les ARVA sont étudiés plus en détail. Bien que le nombre d'accidents et de morts par avalanche fluctue énormément d'une année sur l'autre en fonction des conditions de l'hiver, on note une tendance à l'augmentation pour les activités récréatives principalement pour le ski hors piste et le ski de montagne. Enfin, l'influence positive de l'ARVA apparait depuis 1982 : le pourcentage de victimes sauvées augmente régulièrement.

Abstract

The four lancets contain renderings of the Ecclesiastical Sonnets of 1822 by William Wordsworth. The sonnets trace the sacraments and ceremonies of the Church of England. Following the four rivers that began in the round window above, the streams move across the four lancets to depict various sonnets. All the imagery is set against a Celtic cross that spreads across the four lights. To show the connection of the sonnets, of the 18 illustrations on the window, 14 are based on the sonnets. To identify the sonnets, Arabic numerals identity which part of Wordsworth text the image is from, while the Roman numerous identifies the sonnet the image is from. The four large vignettes along the cross illustrates four episodes of the life of Christ: the Annunciation, the Nativity, the Crucifixion, and the Resurrection. The additional ten vignettes that circle the center of the cross are episodes from the history of the English church. The four grisaille scenes are based on the sonnets as well. The window depicts threes scenes from the Life of St. Francis (from top to bottom): St. Francis Receiving the Stigmata; St. Frances Preaching to the Animals; St. Francis Giving to the Poor. Along the exterior border of the window are various floral motifs (roses, maple leaves, etc.) along the Apocalyptic Eagle of St. John at the lancet’s apex, and a small pamphlet with initials and dates (AD 1892 – 1979 F.B.T). The Initials correspond to person memorialized, Frances Beatrice Taylor. Dedicatory inscription: TO THE GLORY of GOD / AND IN / GRATEFUL REMEMBRANCE of / THE LIFE OF / FRANCES BEATRICE TAYLOR.
