Organised by the LibrarIN Project 1) Introduction to LibrarIN – rationale, aims, work The rationale for LibrarIN builds on the role of libraries as public serviceswhich are facing the varied challenges of the 21st century. Many of thesechallenges are shared with museums, cultural centres, galleries, and culturalinstitutions, such as the OECD and UNESCO, and professional associationslike LIBER. These challenges include the delivery of efficient high-qualitypublic services, and the improvement of libraries’ capacity to deal withsocietal challenges.The first part of the workshop will focus on the what, why and how ofLibrarIN. Key terms will be explained and defined, and the aims of theproject elaborated. The role of research librarians in the process of socialinnovations and the value co-creation of library services will be outlined. 2) Interactive session – value co-creation and innovation in your libraryA key aim of LibrarIN is to understand the process of value co-creationin libraries service delivery, and to evaluate the different approaches toknowledge transformation in libraries, both in terms of their processes andtheir impact.This interactive section of the workshop will see participants discuss theirpersonal experiences with value co-creation and social innovation withintheir libraries. We will look at common challenges, opportunities and needsto determine how libraries can further their role as public services.Participants will benefit from sharing their experiences of value co-creationand social innovation in libraries, and workshop ideas that they can putinto practice at their own institutions (e.g. the concept of living labs,digital services for value co-creation and methods of encouraging socialentrepreneurship within libraries) 3) Wrap-up plenary Participants will join to discuss their group work and share commonexperiences. The workshop hopes to achieve two aims: 1. Participants are better informed about the concept of vale co-creation of library services, its benefits to the library community and wider society. 2. The LibrarIN project gains a snapshot into existing value-cocreationpractices in LIBER libraries and the attitude to such activities amongstthe research community.

Universities and public research institutes play a key role in enabling the application of scientific breakthroughs and innovations in the marketplace. Many countries – developed and developing alike – have implemented national strategies to support the application or commercialization of knowledge produced by public research organizations. Universities and public research institutes have introduced practices to support these activities, for instance by including knowledge transfer to promote innovation as a core part of their mission. As a result, a vital question for policymakers is how to improve the efficiency of these knowledge transfer practices to help maximize innovation-driven growth and/or to seek practical solutions to critical societal challenges. This book aims to develop a conceptual framework to evaluate knowledge transfer practices and outcomes; to improve knowledge transfer metrics, surveys and evaluation frameworks; and to generate findings on what works and what does not, and to propose related policy lessons. This book is also available as Open Access.
