Search

Ultraluminous X-ray Sources (ULXs) in globular clusters are low mass X-ray binaries that achieve high X-ray luminosities through a currently uncertain accretion mechanism. Using archival Chandra and Hubble Space Telescope observations, we perform a volume-limited search ($\lesssim$ 70 Mpc) of 21 of the most massive ($>10^{11.5} M_\odot$) early-type galaxies to identify ULXs hosted by globular cluster (GC) candidates. We find a total of 34 ULX candidates above the expected background within 5 times the effective radius of each galaxy, with 10 of these ($\sim29.4\%$) potentially hosted by a GC. A comparison of the spatial and luminosity distributions of these new candidate GC ULXs with previously identified GC ULXs shows that they are similar: both samples peak at $L_X \sim$ a few $\times 10^{39}$ erg/s and are typically located within a few effective radii of their host galaxies., Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 10 pages, 4 figures, 5 tables

NGC 4472 is home to five ultraluminous X-ray sources hosted by globular clusters. These sources have been suggested as good black hole candidates in extragalactic globular clusters$-$ a highly sought after population that may provide observational information regarding the progenitors of merging black hole binaries. In this body of work, we present X-ray and optical follow up to one of these sources, CXOUJ1229410+075744 (GCU1). We find no evidence of [OIII] optical emission in GCU1 which indicates a lack of significant evidence for super-Eddington outflows, unlike what is seen in a handful of ULXs in extragalactic GCs. X-ray monitoring from 2019-2021 shows no detected X-ray emission above a few $\times$ $10^{38}$ erg/s. Comparisons of the multi-wavelength properties to disc-dominated, near Eddington Galactic black hole low mass X-ray binaries (GRS 1915+105 and XTEJ1817-330) suggests that GCU1 may show similar behaviour to GRS 1915+105 in terms of X-ray variability and similar relationships between $L_X$ and $kT$, with GCU1 showing maximum X-ray luminosities one order of magnitude higher., Accepted to MNRAS

We investigate a sample of seven edge-on spiral galaxies using Chandra observations. Edge-on spiral galaxies allow us to clearly separate source associated with their star-forming regions versus the outer edges of the system; offering a clear advantage over other systems. We uncover a number of X-ray point sources across these galaxies, and after eliminating contaminating foreground and background sources, we identify 12 candidate ultraluminous X-ray sources. All of these sources are projected onto the central regions, implying that the majority of ULXs in this sample of spiral galaxies are disk/bulge, and thus not halo sources. This also includes two transient ULXs, which may be long-duration transients and low mass X-ray binaries. This finding illustrates the need for further studies of transient ULXs., accepted to MNRAS

We investigate archival Hubble Space Telescope ACS/SBC F140LP observations of NGC~1399 to search for evidence of multiple stellar populations in extragalactic globular clusters. Enhanced FUV populations are thought to be indicators of He-enhanced second generation populations in globular clusters, specifically extreme/blue horizontal branch stars. Out of 149 globular clusters in the field of view, 58 have far ultraviolet (FUV) counterparts with magnitudes brighter than 28.5. Six of these FUV-deteced globular clusters are also detected in X-rays, including one ultraluminous X-ray source ($L_X > 10^{39}$ erg/s). While optically bright clusters corresponded to brighter FUV counterparts, we observe FUV emission from both metal-rich and metal-poor clusters, which implies that the FUV excess is not dependent on optical colour. We also find no evidence that the cluster size influences the FUV emission. The clusters with X-ray emission are not unusually FUV bright, which suggests that even the ultraluminous X-ray source does not provide significant FUV contributions. NGC 1399 is only the fourth galaxy to have its globular cluster system probed for evidence of FUV-enhanced populations, and we compare these clusters to previous studies of the Milky Way, M31, M87, and the brightest cluster in M81. These sources indicate that many globular clusters likely host extreme HB stars and/or second generation stars, and highlight the need for more complete FUV observations of extragalactic globular cluster systems., accepted to MNRAS

Globular clusters (GCs) have been at the heart of many longstanding questions in many sub-fields of astronomy and, as such, systematic identification of GCs in external galaxies has immense impacts. In this study, we take advantage of M87's well-studied GC system to implement supervised machine learning (ML) classification algorithms - specifically random forest and neural networks - to identify GCs from foreground stars and background galaxies using ground-based photometry from the Canada-France-Hawai'i Telescope (CFHT). We compare these two ML classification methods to studies of "human-selected" GCs and find that the best performing random forest model can reselect 61.2% $\pm$ 8.0% of GCs selected from HST data (ACSVCS) and the best performing neural network model reselects 95.0% $\pm$ 3.4%. When compared to human-classified GCs and contaminants selected from CFHT data - independent of our training data - the best performing random forest model can correctly classify 91.0% $\pm$ 1.2% and the best performing neural network model can correctly classify 57.3% $\pm$ 1.1%. A number of ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) are physically associated with extragalactic globular clusters (GCs). We undertake a systematic X-ray analysis of eight of the brightest of these sources. We fit the spectra of the GC ULXs to single power law and single disk models. We find that the data never require that any of the sources change between a disk and a power law across successive observations. The GC ULXs best fit by a single disk show a bimodal distribution: they either have temperatures well below 0.5 keV, or variable temperatures ranging above 0.5 keV up to 2~keV. The GC ULXs with low kT have significant changes in luminosity but show little or no change in kT. By contrast, the sources with higher kT either change in both kT and $L_X$ together, or show no significant change in either parameter. We report the discovery of the transient ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) CXOU J122602.3+125951 (hereafter M86 tULX-1), located 3'52" (19 kpc) northwest of the centre of the giant elliptical galaxy M86 (NGC 4406) in the Virgo Cluster. The spectrum of M86 tULX-1 can be fit by a power-law plus multicolour-disc model with a 1.0 [+0.8 -2.6] index and an 0.66 [+0.17 -0.11] keV inner-disc temperature, or by a power law with a 1.86 +/- 0.10 index. For an isotropically emitting source at the distance of M86, the luminosity based on the superposition of spectral models is (5 +/- 1) x 10^39 erg/s. Its relatively hard spectrum places M86 tULX-1 in a hitherto unpopulated region in the luminosity-disc temperature diagram, between other ULXs and the (sub-Eddington) black-hole X-ray binaries. We discovered M86 tULX-1 in an archival 148-ks 2013 July Chandra observation, and it was not detected in a 20-ks 2016 May Chandra observation, meaning it faded by a factor of at least 30 in three years. Based on our analysis of deep optical imaging of M86, it is probably not located in a globular cluster. It is the brightest ULX found in an old field environment unaffected by recent galaxy interaction. We conclude that M86 tULX-1 may be a stellar-mass black hole of ~30 - 100 M_Sun with a low-mass giant companion, or a transitional object in a state between the normal stellar-mass black holes and the ultraluminous state., 8 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables. We have identified three ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) hosted by globular clusters (GCs) within NGC 1316's stellar system. These discoveries bring the total number of known ULXs in GCs up to 20. We find that the X-ray spectra of the three new sources do not deviate from the established pattern of spectral behaviour of the other known GC ULXs. The consistency of the X-ray spectral behaviour for these sources points to multiple paths of formation and evolution mechanisms for these rare and unique sources. Using the now larger sample of GC ULXs, we compare the optical properties of the entire known population of GC ULXs to other GCs across five galaxies and find that the properties of clusters that host ULXs are quite different from the typical clusters. Lastly, any trend of GC ULXs being preferentially hosted by metal-rich clusters is not strongly significant in this sample., Comment: accepted to MNRAS

We have identified seven ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) which are coincident with globular cluster candidates (GCs) associated with M87. ULXs in the old GC environment represent a new population of ULXs, and ones likely to be black holes. In this study we perform detailed X-ray spectroscopic followup to seven GC ULXs across a wealth of archival Chandra observations and long time baseline of 16 years. This study brings the total known sample of GC ULXs to 17. Two of these sources show variability in their X-ray luminosity of an order of magnitude over many years, and one of these sources shows intra-observational variability on the scale of hours. While the X-ray spectra of the majority of globular cluster ULXs are best fit by single component models, one of the sources studied in this paper is the second GC ULX to be best fit by a two component model. We compare this new sample of GC ULXs to the previously studied sample, and compare the X-ray and optical properties counterparts across the samples. We find that the clusters that host ULXs in M87 have metallicities from g-z=1.01 to g-z=1.70. The best-fit power-law indices of the X-ray spectra range from Gamma=1.37-2.21, and the best fit inner black-body disk temperatures range from kT=0.56-1.90 keV., Accepted to MNRAS

RZ2109 is the first of several extragalactic globular clusters shown to host an ultraluminous X-ray source. RZ2109 is particularly notable because optical spectroscopy shows it has broad, luminous [OIII] 4959,5007 emission, while also having no detectable hydrogen emission. The X-ray and optical characteristics of the source in RZ2109 make it a good candidate for being a stellar mass black hole accreting from a white dwarf donor (i.e. an ultracompact black hole X-ray binary). In this paper we present optical spectroscopic monitoring of the [OIII]5007 emission line from 2007 to 2018. We find that the flux of the emission line is significantly lower in recent observations from 2016-2018 than it was in earlier observations in 2007-2011. We also explore the behaviour of the emission line shape over time. Both the core and the wings of the emission line decline over time, with some evidence that the core declines more rapidly than the wings. We present analysis of {\it Hubble Space Telescope} (HST) observations of Centaur 29P/Schwassmann-Wachmann 1 (SW1) while in outburst to characterize the outburst coma and place constraints on the nucleus' spin state. The observations consist of Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2) images from Cycle 5, GO-5829 (Feldman (1995)) acquired on UT 1996 March 11.3 and 12.1, which serendipitously imaged the Centaur shortly after a major outburst. A multi-component coma was detected consisting of: an expanding outburst dust coma with complex morphology possessing an east-west asymmetry and north-south symmetry contained within 5$''$ ($\sim$19,000 km) of the nucleus, the residual dust shell of an earlier UT 1996 February outburst, and a nearly circular underlying quiescent activity level coma detectable to $\sim$70$''$ ($\sim$267,000 km) away from the nucleus. Photometry of the calibrated WFPC2 images resulted in a measured 5$''$ radius aperture equivalent R-band magnitude of 12.86 $\pm$ 0.02 and an estimated (2.79 $\pm$ 0.05)$\times 10^8$ kg for the lower limit of dust material emitted during the outburst. No appreciable evolution of morphologic features, indicating signatures of nucleus rotation, were detected between the two imaging epochs. The observations were modeled using a 3-D Monte Carlo coma model (Samarasinha (2000)) to place constraints on the nucleus' rotation state. Modeling indicated the morphology is representative of a non-isotropic ejection of dust emitted during a single outburst event with a duration on the order of hours from a single source region corresponding to $\sim$1\% of the surface area. A spin period with lower limit on the order of days is suggested to reproduce the coma morphology seen in the observations.

We present high spatial resolution, far ultraviolet (FUV) F140LP observations of 12 massive globular clusters in M 31 obtained using the ACS/SBC on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). These observations resolve the cluster profiles to scales similar to their core radii and enable the study of the spatial distribution of blue and extreme horizontal branch (HB) stars, which dominate the emission in the F140LP images. We confirm that some of these clusters have excess FUV emission, suggesting additional hot populations beyond those expected by canonical single stellar populations models. We find no evidence that the hot populations are spatially distinct from the majority populations in these clusters, as would be expected if the excess FUV emission is a result of a dynamically enhanced population of extreme-HB stars. We conclude that a second population of stars with significantly enhanced helium abundance is a viable explanation for the observed FUV emission which is both bright and distributed similarly to the rest of the cluster light. Our results support the use of FUV observations as a path to characterising helium enhanced sub populations in extragalactic clusters. These M31 clusters also show a correlation such that more massive and denser clusters are relatively FUV bright. We present the results of long-term monitoring of the X-ray emission from the ultraluminous X-ray source XMMUJ122939.9+075333 in the extragalactic globular cluster RZ2109. The combination of the high X-ray luminosity, short term X-ray variability, X-ray spectrum, and optical emission suggest that this system is likely an accreting black hole in a globular cluster. To study the long-term behavior of the X-ray emission from this source, we analyze both new and archival Chandra and XMM-Newton observations, covering 16 years from 2000 to 2016. For all of these observations, we fit extracted spectra of RZ2109 with xspec models. The spectra are all dominated by a soft component, which is very soft with typical fit temperatures of T $\simeq$ 0.15 keV. The resulting X-ray fluxes show strong variability on short and long timescales. We also find that the X-ray spectrum often shows no significant change even with luminosity changes as large as a factor of five., 10 pages, 9 figures

We present the X-ray point source population of NGC 7457 based on 124 ks of Chandra observations. Previous deep Chandra observations of low mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) in early-type galaxies have typically targeted the large populations of massive galaxies. NGC 7457 is a nearby, early-type galaxy with a stellar luminosity of $1.7\times10^{10} L_{K\odot}$, allowing us to investigate the populations in a relatively low mass galaxy. We classify the detected X-ray sources into field LMXBs, globular cluster LMXBs, and background AGN based on identifying optical counterparts in new HST/ACS images. We detect 10 field LMXBs within the $r_{ext}$ ellipse of NGC 7457 (with semi-major axis $\sim$ 9.1 kpc, ellipticity = 0.55). The corresponding number of LMXBs with $L_{x}>2\times10^{37}erg/s$ per stellar luminosity is consistent with that observed in more massive galaxies, $\sim 7$ per $10^{10} L_{K\odot}$. We detect a small globular cluster population in these HST data and show that its colour distribution is likely bimodal and that its specific frequency is similar to that of other early type galaxies. However, no X-ray emission is detected from any of these clusters. Using published data for other galaxies, we show that this non-detection is consistent with the small stellar mass of these clusters. We estimate that 0.11 (and 0.03) LMXBs are expected per $10^{6}M_{\odot}$ in metal-rich (and metal-poor) globular clusters. This corresponds to 1100 (and 330) LMXBs per $10^{10} L_{K\odot}$, highlighting the enhanced formation efficiency of LMXBs in globular clusters. A nuclear X-ray source is detected with $L_{x}$ varying from $2.8-6.8\times10^{38}erg/s$. Combining this $L_{x}$ with a published dynamical mass estimate for the central SMBH in NGC 7457, we find that $L_{x}/L_{Edd}$ varies from $0.5-1.3\times10^{-6}$., 9 pages, 7 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The stellar initial mass function (IMF), which is often assumed to be universal across unresolved stellar populations, has recently been suggested to be "bottom-heavy" for massive ellipticals. In these galaxies, the prevalence of gravity-sensitive absorption lines (e.g. Na I and Ca II) in their near-IR spectra implies an excess of low-mass ($m = 8$ $M_\odot$) would lead to a corresponding deficit of neutron stars and black holes, and therefore of low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs), per unit near-IR luminosity in these galaxies. Peacock et al. (2014) searched for evidence of this trend and found that the observed number of LMXBs per unit $K$-band luminosity ($N/L_K$) was nearly constant. We extend this work using new and archival Chandra X-ray Observatory (Chandra) and Hubble Space Telescope (HST) observations of seven low-mass ellipticals where $N/L_K$ is expected to be the largest and compare these data with a variety of IMF models to test which are consistent with the observed $N/L_K$. We reproduce the result of Peacock et al. (2014), strengthening the constraint that the slope of the IMF at $m >= 8$ $M_\odot$ must be consistent with a Kroupa-like IMF. We construct an IMF model that is a linear combination of a Milky Way-like IMF and a broken power-law IMF, with a steep slope ($��_1=$ $3.84$) for stars < 0.5 $M_\odot$ (as suggested by near-IR indices), and that flattens out ($��_2=$ $2.14$) for stars > 0.5 $M_\odot$, and discuss its wider ramifications and limitations., Accepted for publication in ApJ; 7 pages, 2 figures, 1 table

We present new Chandra observations of the outer halo of the giant elliptical galaxy NGC 4472 (M49) in the Virgo Cluster. The data extend to 130 kpc (28'), and have a combined exposure time of 150 ks. After identifying optical counterparts using the Next Generation Virgo Cluster Survey to remove background active galactic nuclei and globular cluster (GC) sources, and correcting for completeness, we find that the number of field low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) per unit stellar V-band light increases significantly with galactocentric radius. Because the flux limit of the complete sample corresponds to the Eddington limit for neutron stars in NGC 4472, many of the ~90 field LMXBs in this sample could host black holes. The excess of field LMXBs at large galactocentric radii may be partially caused by natal kicks on black holes and neutron stars in binary systems in the inner part of the galaxy. Furthermore, since the metallicity in the halo of NGC 4472 strongly decreases towards larger galactocentric radii, the number of field LMXBs per unit stellar mass is anti-correlated with metallicity, opposite to what is observed in GCs. Another way to explain the spatial distribution of field LMXBs is therefore a reversed metallicity effect, although we have not identified a mechanism to explain this in terms of stellar and binary evolution., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables. We investigate the integrated far-ultraviolet (FUV) emission from globular clusters. We present new FUV photometry of M~87's clusters based on archival HST WFPC2 F170W observations. We use these data to test the reliability of published photometry based on HST STIS FUV-MAMA observations, which are now known to suffer from significant red-leak. We generally confirm these previous FUV detections, but suggest they may be somewhat fainter. We compare the FUV emission from bright ($M_{V} < -9.0$) clusters in the Milky Way, M~31, M~81 and M~87 to each other and to the predictions from stellar populations models. Metal-rich globular clusters show a large spread in FUV-V, with some clusters in M~31, M~81 and M~87 being much bluer than standard predictions. This requires that some metal-rich clusters host a significant population of blue/extreme horizontal branch (HB) stars. These hot HB stars are not traditionally expected in metal-rich environments, but are a natural consequence of multiple populations in clusters - since the enriched population is observed to be He-enhanced and will therefore produce bluer HB stars, even at high metallicity. We conclude that the observed FUV emission from metal-rich clusters in M~31, M~81 and M~87 provides evidence that He-enhanced second populations, similar to those observed directly in the Milky Way, may be a ubiquitous feature of globular clusters in the local universe. Future HST FUV photometry is required to both confirm our interpretation of these archival data and provide constraints on He-enriched second populations of stars in extra-galactic globular clusters., 9 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present the results of new X-ray observations of XMMU 122939.7+075333, the black hole (BH) in the globular cluster RZ 2109 in the Virgo cluster galaxy NGC 4472. A combination of non-detections and marginal detections in several recent Swift and Chandra observations show that the source has varied by at least a factor of 20 in the past 6 yr, and that the variations seem not just to be ‘flickering’. This variation could be explained with changes in the absorption column intrinsic to the source no larger than those which were previously seen near the peak of the 1989 outburst of the Galactic BH X-ray binary V404 Cyg. The large amplitude variations are also a natural expectation from a hierarchical triple system with Kozai cycles – the mechanism recently proposed to produce BH–white dwarf (WD) binaries in globular clusters. On the other hand, variation by such a large factor on time-scales of years, rather than centuries, is very difficult to reconcile with the scenario in which the X-ray emission from XMMU 122939.7+075333 is due to fallback of material from a tidally destroyed or detonated WD.

We have discovered an accreting black hole (BH) in a spectroscopically confirmed globular cluster (GC) in NGC 1399 through monitoring of its X-ray activity. The source, with a peak luminosity of L_x=2x10^39 ergs/s, reveals an order of magnitude change in the count rate within ~10 ks in a Chandra observation. The BH resides in a metal-rich [Fe/H]~0.2 globular cluster. After RZ2109 in NGC 4472 this is only the second black-hole X-ray source in a GC confirmed via rapid X-ray variability. Unlike RZ2109, the X-ray spectrum of this BH source did not change during the period of rapid variability. In addition to the short-term variability the source also exhibits long-term variability. After being bright for at least a decade since 1993 within a span of 2 years it became progressively fainter, and eventually undetectable, or marginally detectable, in deep Chandra and XMM observations. The source also became harder as it faded. The characteristics of the long term variability in itself provide sufficient evidence to identify the source as a BH. The long term decline in the luminosity of this object was likely not recognized in previous studies because the rapid variability within the bright epoch suppressed the average luminosity in that integration. The hardening of the spectrum accompanying the fading would also make this black hole source indistinguishable from an accreting neutron star in some epochs. Therefore some low mass X-ray binaries identified as NS accretors in snapshot studies of nearby galaxies may also be BHs. Thus the discovery of the second confirmed BH in an extragalactic GC through rapid variability at the very least suggests that accreting BHs in GCs are not exceedingly rare occurences., Comment: 8 pages, 2 figs. We present an updated catalogue of M31 globular clusters (GCs) based on images from the Wide Field CAMera (WFCAM) on the UK Infrared Telescope and from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Our catalogue includes new, self-consistent ugriz and K-band photometry of these clusters. We discuss the difficulty of obtaining accurate photometry of clusters projected against M31 due to small scale background structure in the galaxy. We consider the effect of this on the accuracy of our photometry and provide realistic photometric error estimates. We investigate possible contamination in the current M31 GC catalogues using the excellent spatial resolution of these WFCAM images combined with the SDSS multicolour photometry. We identify a large population of clusters with very blue colours. Most of these have recently been proposed by other work as young clusters. We distinguish between these, and old clusters, in the final classifications. Our final catalogue includes 416 old clusters, 156 young clusters and 373 candidate clusters. We also investigate the structure of M31's old GCs using previously published King model fits to these WFCAM images. We demonstrate that the structure and colours of M31's old GC system are similar to those of the Milky Way. One GC (B383) is found to be significantly brighter in previous observations than observed here. We investigate all of the previous photometry of this GC and suggest that this variability appears to be genuine and short lived. We propose that the large increase in its luminosity my have been due to a classical nova in the GC at the time of the previous observations in 1989., Accepted for publication in MNRAS: 17 pages, 11 figures and 3 tables. We investigate the relationship between Low Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs) and globular clusters (GCs) using UKIRT observations of M31 and existing Chandra, XMM-Newton, and ROSAT catalogues. By fitting King models to these data we have estimated the structural parameters and stellar collision rates of 239 of its GCs. We show a highly significant trend between the presence of a LMXB and the stellar collision rate of a cluster. The stellar collision rate is found to be a stronger predictor of which clusters will host LMXBs than the host cluster mass. We argue that our results show that the stellar collision rate of the clusters is the fundamental parameter related to the production LMXBs. This is consistent with the formation of LMXBs through dynamical interactions with little direct dependence on the neutron star retention fraction or cluster mass.

The high spatial resolution of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) has led to tremendous progress in many areas of astronomy. The ability of the HST to peer into the bright inner regions of galaxies and distinguish between globular clusters (GCs) and background objects has been particularly beneficial to the study of clusters. But the very virtue of the HST that has been an asset to such research can be its pitfall if the consequences of superior angular resolution are not considered in detail. Recent HST studies show a small, but consistent, color-magnitude correlation in the metal-poor halo GCs of nearby galaxies. This `blue-tilt' has been interpreted as a mass-metallicity relationship, implying self-enrichment in the higher mass GCs. We show that the `blue-tilt' is likely the consequence of a small, but measurable with HST, mass-size relationship in GCs. The combined effects of Poisson noise and surface brightness fluctuations can explain other apparent correlations of the `blue-tilt' with environment. Some HST based studies have similarly suggested that the mean metallicity of the blue, metal-poor, halo clusters increases with host galaxy mass, indicating that GC metallicity is linked to the size of the host galaxy halo. We show that this correlation is also likely due to the effects of GC size in high resolution HST images. We also point out that the presumed fundamental plane of GCs itself varies with galactocentric distance due to GC size trends and ultra compact dwarfs may simply reflect the tail of the globular cluster distribution., Accepted for publication in AJ. We present an analysis of low mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) and globular clusters (GCs) in five galaxies using Chandra, and HST data. Of the 186 LMXBs within the optical fields 71 are in GCs, confirming that LMXBs are formed particularly efficiently in GCs. However, there is no statistically significant correlation between the distance of a GC from the center of its host galaxy and its LMXB hosting probability. Metal-rich GCs are 3.4 times more likely to host LMXBs than metal-poor ones. Intriguingly, the LMXBs in NGC 1399 are preferentially in the reddest GCs of the metal-rich subsystem. This indicates that the red peak of the color distribution itself encompasses GCs with a range of enrichment histories. The strength of this effect varies from galaxy to galaxy, possibly indicating differences in their metal-enrichment histories. Field LMXBs in our program galaxies are more concentrated towards the center of their host galaxies than GC-LMXBs. This suggests that a majority of field LMXBs are formed in situ and have not escaped from current GCs. This is consistent with previous specific frequency based studies. The brightest LMXBs in GCs appear to be preferentially associated with luminous, metal-rich clusters. We show that it is probable that some of these GCs host multiple bright LMXBs, while the probability is much lower for metal-poor GCs. This implies that LMXBs in more metal-rich cluster systems should reveal a longer high luminosity X-ray tail, and show less X-ray variability than metal-poor cluster populations. It has been proposed that a galaxy's nova rate might be enhanced by the production of nova progenitor binaries in the dense cores of its globular clusters (GCs). To explore this idea, relative nova rates in three Virgo elliptical galaxies, M87, M49 and M84, which have significantly different GC specific frequencies ($S_{N}$) of 14, 3.6, and 1.6, respectively, were measured over the course of 4 epochs spanning a period of 14 months. To simplify the analysis, observations of the nearly equidistant galaxies were made on the same nights, with the same integration times, and through the same filter (H$\alpha$), so that the relative numbers of novae discovered would reflect the relative nova rates. At the conclusion of our survey we found a total of 27 novae associated with M87, 37 with M49, and 19 with M84. After correcting for survey completeness, we found annual nova rates of $154^{+23}_{-19}$, $189^{+26}_{-22}$, and $95^{+15}_{-14}$, for M87, M49, and M84, respectively, corresponding to $K$-band luminosity-specific nova rates of $3.8\pm1.0$, $3.4\pm0.6$, and $3.0\pm0.6$ novae per year per $10^{10}~L_{K,\odot}$. The overall results of our study suggest that a galaxy's nova rate simply scales with its luminosity, and is insensitive to its GC specific frequency. Two novae, one in M87 and one in M84, were found to be spatially coincident with known GCs. We have obtained HST/STIS far- and near-UV photometry of globular clusters in four fields in the gE galaxy M87. To a limit of m(FUV) = 25 we detect a total of 66 globular clusters (GCs) in common with the deep HST optical-band study of Kundu et al. (1999). Despite strong overlap in V- and I-band properties, the M87 GCs have UV/optical properties that are distinct from clusters in the Milky Way and in M31. M87 clusters, especially metal-poor ones, produce larger hot HB populations than do Milky Way analogues. Cluster mass is probably not a factor in these distinctions. The most metal-rich M87 GCs in our sample are near Z_sun and overlap the local E galaxy sample in estimated Mg_2 line indices. Nonetheless, the clusters produce much more UV light at a given Mg_2, being up to 1 mag bluer than any gE galaxy in (FUV-V) color. The M87 GCs do not appear to represent a transition between Milky Way-type clusters and E galaxies. The differences are in the correct sense if the clusters are significantly older than the E galaxies. Comparisons with Galactic open clusters indicate that the hot stars lie on the extreme horizontal branch, rather than being blue stragglers, and that the EHB becomes well populated for ages > 5 Gyr. We find that 43 of our UV detections have no optical-band counterparts. Most appear to be UV-bright background galaxies, seen through M87. Optical and X-ray studies of six nearby galaxies show that the probability a globular cluster will be an X-ray source is consistent with being linearly proportional to its mass. We show that this result is consistent with some recent estimates of the velocity kick distributions for isolated radio pulsars -- those which are the sum of two Maxwellians, with the slower distribution at about 100 km/sec -- so long as a large fraction of the retained binaries are in binary systems with other massive stars. We confirm that over a large sample of galaxies, metallicity is clearly a factor in determining whether a globular cluster will contain an X-ray binary, and we estimate the transformations between color and metallicity for a large number of optical filter combinations. We also show that the core interaction rate is roughly linearly proportional to the stellar mass of a globular cluster for the Milky Way when one bins the clusters by mass., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, accepted to A&A

We report the results of a deep Chandra survey of the Sculptor dwarf spheroidal galaxy. We find five X-ray sources with $L_X$ of at least $6\times10^{33}$ ergs/sec with optical counterparts establishing them as members of Sculptor. These X-ray luminosities indicate that these sources are X-ray binaries, as no other known class of Galactic point sources can reach 0.5-8 keV luminosities this high. Finding these systems proves definitively that such objects can exist in an old stellar population without stellar collisions. Three of these objects have highly evolved optical counterparts (giants or horizontal branch stars), as do three other sources whose X-ray luminosities are in the range which includes both quiescent low mass X-ray binaries and the brightest magnetic cataclysmic variables. We present a Chandra ACIS study of the early-type galaxy NGC 4552. We detect 47 X-ray point sources, most of which are likely LMXBs, within 4 R_e. The brightest X-ray source coincides with the optical/UV/radio center of the galaxy, and shows variability on >1 hr timescales, indicating the possible existence of a LLAGN. The 46 off-center sources and the unresolved point sources contribute about 29% and 20% to the total luminosity of the galaxy, respectively. The corrected cumulative XLF of the off-center sources is best fit by a broken power-law model with a break at L_b=4.4+2.0-1.4 e38 ergs/s. We identified 210 GCs candidates in a HST WFPC2 optical image of the galaxy's central region. Of the 25 off-center LMXBs that fall within the WFPC2 FOV, 10 sources are coincident with a GC. Thus the fraction of the GCs hosting bright LMXBs and the fraction of the LMXBs associated with GCs are 4.8% and 40%, respectively. In the V and I bands, the GCs hosting bright LMXBs are typically 1-2 magnitudes brighter than the GCs with no detected LMXBs. There are about 1.9+-0.4 times as many LMXBs in the red, metal-rich GCs as there are in the blue, metal-poor ones. We find no obvious difference between the luminosity distributions of LMXBs in GCs and in field, but the cumulative spectrum of the LMXBs in GCs tends to be softer than that of the LMXBs in field. We detected 3 X-ray sources that have isotropic luminosities larger than 1e39 erg/s. The one located in the joint Chandra-HST field is found to be associated with a GC. By studying the ACIS spectra we infer that the this may be a candidate black hole system with a mass of 15-135 M_sun. One of the other sources with a luminosity brighter than 1e39 ergs/s reveals temporal variations in brightness on timescales greater than an hour., Accepted for publication in ApJ

(Abridged) A high fraction of the Low Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs) in early-type galaxies are associated with globular clusters (GCs). Here, we discuss the correlations between LMXBs and GCs in a sample of four early-type galaxies. There is some evidence that the fraction of LMXBs associated with GCs (f_X-GC) increases along the Hubble sequence from spiral bulges to S0s to Es to cDs. On the other hand, the fraction of globular clusters which contain X-ray sources appears to be roughly constant at f_GC-X ~ 4%. There is a strong tendency for the X-ray sources to be associated with the optically more luminous GCs. However, this correlation is consistent with a constant probability of finding a LMXB per unit optical luminosity; it seems to result primarily from the larger number of stars in optically luminous GCs. The probability of finding a bright LMXB per unit optical luminosity in the GCs is about 1.5e-7 LMXBs per L_solar,I for L_X >~ 1e38 erg/s, and rises to about 2.0e-7 LMXBs per L_solar,I at lower X-ray luminosities, L_X >~ 3e37 erg/s. This frequency appears to be roughly constant for different galaxies, including the bulges of the Milky Way and M31. There is a tendency for the X-ray sources to be found preferentially in redder GCs. This seems to indicate that the evolution of X-ray binaries in a GC is affected either by the metallicity or age of the GC, with younger and/or more metal rich GCs having more LMXBs. There is a weak tendency for the brightest LMXBs, whose luminosities exceed the Eddington luminosity for a 1.4 M_solar neutron star, to avoid GCs. Using V and I images obtained with WFPC2/HST, we investigate compact stellar structures within tidal tails. Six regions of tidal debris in the four classic ``Toomre Sequence'' mergers: NGC 4038/39 (``Antennae''), NGC 3256, NGC 3921, and NGC 7252 (``Atoms for Peace'') have been studied in order to explore how the star formation depends upon the local and global physical conditions. These mergers sample a range of stages in the evolutionary sequence and tails with and without embedded tidal dwarf galaxies. The six tails are found to contain a variety of stellar structures, with sizes ranging from those of globular clusters up to those of dwarf galaxies. From V and I WFPC2 images, we measure the luminosities and colors of the star clusters. NGC 3256 is found to have a large population of blue clusters (0.2 < V-I < 0.9), particularly in its Western tail, similar to those found in the inner region of the merger. In contrast, NGC 4038/39 has no clusters in the observed region of the tail, only less luminous point sources likely to be individual stars. A significant cluster population is clearly associated with the prominent tidal dwarf candidates in the eastern and western tails of NGC 7252. The cluster-rich Western tail of NGC 3256 is not distinguished from the others by its dynamical age or by its total HI mass. However, the mergers that have few clusters in the tail all have tidal dwarf galaxies, while NGC 3256 does not have prominent tidal dwarfs. We speculate that star formation in tidal tails may manifest itself either in small structures like clusters along the tail or in large structures such as dwarf galaxies, but not in both. We study the dynamical evolution of the M87 globular cluster system (GCS) with a number of numerical simulations. We explore a range of different initial conditions for the GCS mass function (GCMF), for the GCS spatial distribution and for the GCS velocity distribution. We confirm that an initial power-law GCMF like that observed in young cluster systems can be readily transformed through dynamical processes into a bell-shaped GCMF. However,only models with initial velocity distributions characterized by a strong radial anisotropy increasing with the galactocentric distance are able to reproduce the observed constancy of the GCMF at all radii.We show that such strongly radial orbital distributions are inconsistent with the observed kinematics of the M87 GCS. The evolution of models with a bell-shaped GCMF with a turnover similar to that currently observed in old GCS is also investigated. We show that models with this initial GCMF can satisfy all the observational constraints currently available on the GCS spatial distribution,the GCS velocity distribution and on the GCMF properties.In particular these models successfully reproduce both the lack of a radial gradient of the GCS mean mass recently found in an analysis of HST images of M87 at multiple locations, and the observed kinematics of the M87 GCS.Our simulations also show that evolutionary processes significantly affect the initial GCS properties by leading to the disruption of many clusters and changing the masses of those which survive.The preferential disruption of inner clusters flattens the initial GCS number density profile and it can explain the rising specific frequency with radius; we show that the inner flattening observed in the M87 GCS spatial distribution can be the result of the effects of dynamical evolution on an initially steep density profile. We have studied the low mass X-ray binary (LMXB) populations within and outside globular clusters (GC) in NGC 4365 and NGC 3115. Using published age and metallicity constraints from optical and IR observations of their GCs, we do not find any evidence for an increase in the LMXB formation rate in the intermediate age cluster population of NGC 4365, as has been proposed in some scenarios of dynamical LMXB formation in GCs. The old, metal-rich, red population of GCs in NGC 3115 on the other hand is {\it at least} three times as efficient at creating LMXBs as the old, metal-poor, blue clusters. These data suggest that the higher formation efficiency of LMXBs in the red GC subsystems of many galaxies is largely a consequence of their higher metallicity. A comparison of the densities of field LMXBs in different galaxies does not reveal an obvious correlation with the age of the field stars as predicted by models in which the LMXB formation rate in the field drops monotonically with time after an initial burst. This suggests that either a significant fraction of the field LMXBs are created in GCs and subsequently injected into the field, or the LMXB formation rate has a more complex time evolution pattern., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ Letters. 7 pages including 5 figures

We present the results of our detailed WFPC2-based photometric study of the globular cluster systems (GCS) of over 60 elliptical and SO galaxies. Approximately 50% of the GCSs of ellipticals, and at least 15–20% of S0s reveal bimodality in the color distribution. We trace the variation in GCS properties with Hubble type and discuss the implications on the various models of galaxy (and cluster system) formation. We also provide evidence that the globular cluster luminosity function is an excellent distance indicator with an accuracy comparable to the surface brightness fluctuation method.

We present a study of the faint-end of the X-ray Luminosity Function of Low Mass X-ray binaries in the Globular Cluster system of the cD galaxy NGC 1399 by performing a stacking experiment on 618 X-ray undetected GCs, in order to verify the presence of faint LMXBs and to constrain the faint-end slope of the GC-LMXBs XLF below the individual detection threshold of $8\times10^{37}$ erg s$^{-1}$ in the $0.5-8$ keV band. We obtain a significant X-ray detection for the whole GC sample, as well as for the red and blue GC subpopulations, corresponding to an average luminosity per GC $_{GC}$ of $(3.6\pm1.0)\times10^{36}\ erg\ s^{-1}$, $(6.9\pm2.1)\times10^{36}\ erg\ s^{-1}$ and $(1.7\pm0.9)\times10^{36}\ erg\ s^{-1}$, respectively for all, red and blue GCs. If LMXBs in red and blue GCs have the same average intrinsic luminosity, we derive a red/blu ratio $\simeq 3$ of GCs hosting LMXBs ($2.5\pm1.0$ or $4.1\pm2.5$ depending on the surveyed region); alternatively, assuming the fractions observed for brighter sources, we measure an average X-ray luminosity of $L_{X}=(4.3\pm1.3)\times10^{37}\ erg\ s^{-1}$ and $L_{X}=(3.4\pm1.7)\times10^{37}\ erg\ s^{-1}$ per red and blue GC-LMXBs respectively. In the assumption that the XLF follows a power-law distribution, we find that a low-luminosity break is required at $L_{X}\leq 8\times10^{37}$ erg s$^{-1}$ both in the whole, as well as in the color-selected (red and blue) subsamples. Given the bright-end slopes measured above the X-ray completeness limit, this result is significant at $>3\sigma$ level. Our best estimates for the faint end slope are $\beta_{L}=-1.39/-1.38/-1.36$ for all/red/blue GC-LMXBs. We also find evidence that the luminosity function becomes steeper at luminosities $L_X\gtrsim 3\times 10^{39}$ erg s$^{-1}$, as observed in old ellipticals., Comment: In press on A&A

We present an analysis of optical spectra from the globular cluster RZ2109 in NGC4472, which hosts the first unambiguous globular cluster black hole. We use these spectra to determine the elemental composition of the emission line system associated with this source, and to constrain the age and metallicity of the host globular cluster. For the emission line system of RZ2109, our analysis indicates the [O III]5007 equivalent width is 33.82 +- 0.39 Ang and the H beta equivalent width is 0.32 +- 0.32 Ang , producing a formal [O III]5007/H beta emission line ratio of 106 for a 3200 km/s measurement aperture covering the full velocity width of the [O~III]5007 line. Within a narrower 600 \kms aperture covering the highest luminosity velocity structure in the line complex, we find O III]5007/H beta = 62. The measured O III]5007/H beta ratios are significantly higher than can be produced in radiative models of the emission line region with solar composition, and the confidence interval limits exclude all but models which have gas masses much larger than those for a single star. Therefore, we conclude that the region from which the [O~III]5007 emission originates is hydrogen-depleted relative to solar composition gas. This finding is consistent with emission from an accretion-powered outflow driven by a hydrogen-depleted donor star, such as a white dwarf, being accreted onto a black hole., Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures, 3 tables; accepted for publication in ApJ

We examine the globular cluster systems (GCS) of a sample of 34 S0 galaxies from a WFPC2 snapshot survey in the V and I-bands. Of these 34 galaxies, 29 have measurable globular cluster systems. The mean color of the GCSs of individual galaxies vary from V-I=0.85 mag to V-I=1.17 mag. The average color of GCSs in all 29 S0 galaxies, V-I=1.00 +/- 0.07 mag, is similar to the value of V-I=1.04 +/- 0.04 derived for ellipticals in a companion paper. The mean metallicity of a cluster system is correlated to the luminosity (or mass) of the host galaxy, but is not dependent on the Hubble type. Our measurements of the local specific frequency, on the other hand, confirm that the cluster formation efficiency is a function of Hubble type. The mean local specific frequency of our sample within the WFPC2 field-of-view is 1.0 +/- 0.6, lower than S_(N Local)=2.4 +/- 1.8 derived for ellipticals in a similar analysis. Although we are able to confirm a bimodal color distribution in only one galaxy from the shallow 'snapshot' images analyzed in this paper statistical tests suggest that 10-20% of S0s are bimodal it at the present level of photometric accuracy. There are no significant trends in GCS properties with membership or location of the S0 host in a galaxy cluster. We have measured the turnover luminosity of the globular cluster luminosity function (GCLF) for the richest few GCSs and find the GCLF distances to be in agreement with other estimates. The globular clusters in S0 galaxies have average half-light radii of ~2.6 pc which is similar to that of other galaxies, including our own.

We present an analysis of the globular cluster systems of 28 elliptical galaxies using archival WFPC2 images in the V and I-bands. The V-I color distributions of at least 50% of the galaxies appear to be bimodal {\it at the present level of photometric accuracy}. We argue that this is indicative of multiple epochs of cluster formation early in the history of these galaxies, possibly due to mergers. We also present the first evidence of bimodality in low luminosity galaxies and discuss its implication on formation scenarios. The mean color of the 28 cluster systems studied by us is V-I = 1.04$\pm$0.04 (0.01) mag corresponding to a mean metallicity of Fe/H = -1.0$\pm$0.19 (0.04). We find that the turnover magnitudes of the globular cluster luminosity functions (GCLF) of our sample are in excellent agreement with the distance measurements using other methods and conclude that the accuracy of the GCLF is at least as good as the surface brightness fluctuation method. The absolute magnitude of the turnover luminosity of the GCLF is M$_V^0$ = -7.41 (0.03) in V and M$_I^0$ = -8.46 (0.03) in I. The mean local specific frequency of our sample of elliptical galaxies within the WFPC2 field-of-view is 2.4$\pm$1.8 (0.4), considerably higher than the 1.0$\pm$0.6 (0.1) derived for a comparable sample of S0s in a similar analysis. It shows no obvious correlation with metallicity, host galaxy mass or membership in a galaxy cluster. The median size of clusters in all galaxies appears to be remarkably constant at $\sim$2.4 pc. We suggest that in the future it might be possible to use the sizes of clusters in the inner regions of galaxies as a simple geometrical distance indicator., 45 pages including 13 figs (4 two-part figs) and 8 tables. Infrared, optical, and radio continuum observations were made of the long-period comet C/Hyakutake 1996 B2 during its close approach to Earth in March 1996. Using these observations to characterize the comet's nucleus, we find an estimated nuclear radius of 2.4±0.5 km (1σ) from photometric resolution of the nucleus in the thermal infrared at 8–20 μm on 25 March 1996, no detectable optical nuclear emission above that of the coma on 19–23 March 1996, and a 3σ upper limit to the radius of 2.7 km (assuming an emissivity of 0.9) in the radio at 3.6 cm on 27 March 1996. The infrared color temperature of the nucleus was consistent with a 320-K blackbody, and assuming a 2.4-km radius, the maximum effective temperature at 3.6 cm was 230 K. We explain the optical nondetection of the nucleus as due to excess emission from a halo of small, cold, and high optical albedo dust particles surrounding the nucleus; such particles would have low emissivity in the infrared and radio. A surrounding halo of icy dust grains emitting water in addition to the nucleus accounts for the small nuclear size but large production rate of water from C/Hyakutake; otherwise an anomalously large fraction of the nuclear surface, nearly 100%, must be active. A fast rotation period of 6.30±0.03 h due to coma dust cross-sectional variations was found from optical and infrared imaging on March 20–23. The minimum bulk tensile strength required to stabilize the comet against centrifugal breakup due to this rotation, ∼103 dynes cm−2, is similar to that found for other comets.

Using the Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 on board the Hubble Space Telescope we have identified 144 globular cluster candidates in the inner region of the S0 galaxy NGC 3115. The color distribution of the globular clusters is bimodal, with a blue peak at V-I = 0.96 mag and a red peak at V-I = 1.17 mag. There are roughly equal number of blue and red clusters. The mean [Fe/H] of the blue population is -1.36 dex, while the red population has a mean [Fe/H] of -0.37 dex. Following Ashman & Zepf, we interpret the bimodality as evidence of multiple epochs of cluster formation in the metal enrichment history of the galaxy. Assuming that the blue peak corresponds to a primordial, 15 Gyr old, metal-poor population of globular clusters, we derive an age of 11 ± 3 Gyr for the younger, red clusters. We also find that the age and metallicities of the globular clusters are consistent with the red giant stars in the field, suggesting that the two systems formed coevally. The spatial distribution of both the red and the blue clusters are flattened with major and minor axes roughly colinear with the galaxy light profile. While the red clusters follow the thick disk component of the galaxy, the blue cluster distribution is less flattened and mimics the bulge/halo light distribution. We find a local specific frequency of 1.3 ± 0.1 in the central region of the galaxy, which is lower than the global value of 2.3 ± 0.5 reported in the literature, implying that the specific frequency increases with galactocentric distance. We have also observed the globular cluster luminosity function 2 mag deeper than the turnover luminosity and derived a distance modulus of m-M = 29.8 ± 0.3 mag to NGC 3115. The average half-light radii of the clusters is ≈2 pc, and the red clusters are ≈20% smaller than the blue ones.

We present near-infrared, modified K-band images of a sample of Seyfert and control galaxies. Our sample includes all known Seyfert galaxies in the Revised Shapely-Ames Catalog and Sandage & Tammann's 1987 extension to the RSA with recessional velocities less than 5000 km s-1 and logarithmic axial ratios less than 0.2 (excluding the two early-type Seyfert galaxies Centaurus A and Perseus A). A control sample of normal galaxies, matched to the Seyfert sample in Hubble type, redshift, inclination, and blue luminosity, has also been observed. To quantify the incidence of bars in both samples, elliptical fits to the isophotes of each galaxy have been performed. In agreement with earlier studies, we find that many galaxies classified as unbarred in the optical, display evidence for bars in the near-infrared.

The results of our observations during the close approach of comet C/1996 B2 (Hyakutake) using Very Large Array (VLA) at a wavelength of 3.55 cm (X-band) are presented. The scientific goals were to observe the thermal microwave continuum from the nucleus and constrain the comet's nuclear properties. The 12 h track allows 3-σ upper limits to be placed on the emission that are about a factor of four lower than any previous VLA observation of a comet's continuum. With the caveat that some assumptions about the microwave emissivity, the temperature, and the thermal conductivity must be made, the effective radius of Hyakutake's nucleus is constrained to be less than 3.0 km, which provides an addition to the sparse body of knowledge on long-period cometary nuclei. Since the observations overlap several of the ROSAT observations of this comet, the strength of the microwave flux is estimated from the X-ray emitting region of the coma to place constraints on possible emission mechanisms.

We present a wide-field study of the globular cluster (GC)/low-mass X-ray binary (LMXB) connection in the giant elliptical NGC 1399. The large field of view of the Advanced Camera for Surveys/WFC, combined with Hubble Space Telescope and Chandra high resolution, allow us to constrain the LMXB formation scenarios in elliptical galaxies. We confirm that NGC 1399 has the highest LMXB fraction in GCs of all nearby elliptical galaxies studied so far, even though the exact value depends on galactocentric distance due to the interplay of a differential GC versus galaxy light distribution and the GC color dependence. In fact, LMXBs are preferentially hosted by bright, red GCs out to > 5R(eff) of the galaxy light. The finding that GCs hosting LMXBs follow the radial distribution of their parent GC population argues against the hypothesis that the external dynamical influence of the galaxy affects the LMXB formation in GCs. On the other hand, field-LMXBs closely match the host galaxy light, thus indicating that they are originally formed in situ and not inside GCs. We measure GC structural parameters, finding that the LMXB formation likelihood is influenced independently by mass, metallicity, and GC structural parameters. In particular, the GC central density plays a major role in predicting which GCs host accreting binaries. Finally, our analysis shows that LMXBs in GCs are marginally brighter than those in the field, and in particular the only color-confirmed GC with L(X) > 10(39) erg s(-1) shows no variability, which may indicate a superposition of multiple LMXBs in these systems.

We discuss CXOU 1229410+075744, a new black hole candidate in a globular cluster in the elliptical galaxy NGC 4472. By comparing two Chandra observations of the galaxy, we find a source that varies by at least a factor of 4, and has a peak luminosity of at least 2 x 10 39 erg s -1 . As such, the source varies by significantly more than the Eddington luminosity for a single neutron star, and is a strong candidate for being a globular cluster black hole. The source's X-ray spectrum also evolves in a manner consistent with what would be expected from a single accreting stellar mass black hole. We consider the properties of the host cluster of this source and the six other strong black hole X-ray binary candidates, and find that there is suggestive evidence that black hole X-ray binary formation is favoured in bright and metal-rich clusters, just as is the case for bright X-ray sources in general.

From a deep multi-epoch Chandra observation of the elliptical galaxy NGC 3379 we report the spectral properties of eight luminous LMXBs (LX>1.2E38 erg/s). We also present a set of spectral simulations, produced to aid the interpretation of low-count single-component spectral modeling. These simulations demonstrate that it is possible to infer the spectral states of X-ray binaries from these simple models and thereby constrain the properties of the source. Of the eight LMXBs studied, three reside within globular clusters, and one is a confirmed field source. Due to the nature of the luminosity cut all sources are either neutron star binaries emitting at or above the Eddington luminosity or black hole binaries. The spectra from these sources are well described by single-component models, with parameters consistent with Galactic LMXB observations, where hard-state sources have a range in photon index of 1.5-1.9 and thermally dominated sources have inner disc temperatures between ~0.7-1.55 keV. The large variability observed in the brightest globular cluster source (LX>4E38 erg/s) suggests the presence of a black hole binary. At its most luminous this source is observed in a thermally dominated state with kT=1.5 keV, consistent with a black hole mass of ~4 Msol. This observation provides further evidence that globular clusters are able to retain such massive binaries. We also observed a source transitioning from a bright state (LX~1E39 erg/s), with prominent thermal and non-thermal components, to a less luminous hard state (LX=3.8E38 erg/s, Gamma=1.85). In its high flux emission this source exhibits a cool-disc component of ~0.14 keV, similar to spectra observed in some ultraluminous X-ray sources. Such a similarity indicates a possible link between `normal' stellar mass black holes in a high accretion state and ULXs., Accepted to ApJ; 24 pages with 17 figures. Replacement includes additional simulations and a decision tree summarizing the simulation results
