ABSTRACTThe development of machines explores the development of a manufacturing system. This perspective offers challenges adjacent to the materials, the product that wants to be manufactured, the technical considerations that must be covered during implementation and the manner of delivering the products to the user. This article addresses the design and development of machines, on the one hand the redesign of a multifunctional platform, and on the other hand a 3D food printer. The second is emphasised, since its main objective is to help the food problems that exist today. The design phases, aspects considered for its implementation such as food safety, the choice of the substrate, the functionality of the food, transportation and the pre- and post-processes required. In this manner, the selection and innovation of materials constitutes a primary source of innovation and research in the integral development of a 3D food printer. The main source of value of these both cases lie in customisation. The experiences of a multidisciplinary research team in the development processes are compiled and the design and creation process are shown, in order to contribute to deal with design and development to tackle fundamental problems of society.

ABSTRACTSmartphones are indispensable tools for daily tasks; nevertheless, their short lifespan of about two years contributes to a disproportionate increase in environmental waste. Although current initiatives explore reusing specific smartphone components, such as metallic parts, the scope of these efforts still needs to be expanded, necessitating more comprehensive strategies to address the growing waste generation. Additionally, end-users play a pivotal role in determining the fate of obsolete smartphones and in adopting sustainable disposal practices to mitigate environmental damage after the devices are no longer useful to them. This proposal describes the scope to obtain a circular economy approach at a macro-level environmental impact. The strategy aims to employ obsolete smartphones while reducing environmental im pacts and facilitating efficient device disposal. The authors employ the S4 framework to support sustainable product development at a macro-level, emphasising sensing, smart, sustainability, and social dimensions. However, it is essential to note that the current solution applies only to smartphones with functional features, including intact displays, operational batteries, accessible cameras and sensors, and functional power systems, obtaining a level three according to the S4 framework, which describes limited human intervention.

ABSTRACTTechnologies from Industry 4.0 enhance human skills and capabilities in production. These advanced manufacturing and digital technologies unlock opportunities to integrate individuals with unique abilities into industrial environments, helping to attain social sustainability. However, the validation process with end-users in real-world manufacturing tasks ensures the technology is robust and aligned with individual needs. However, the topic is in its early stages, and only a few papers concerning validation have emerged in journals. This paper presents a systematic review utilising the PRISMA methodology to examine validated technologies proposed to empower differently-abled workers in the manufacturing sector. The supporting technologies were identified and sorted into four categories: collaborative robots, augmented reality, assistive technology, and gamification. Within the reviewed papers, quantitative and qualitative evidence emerged, showcasing how individuals with challenges proficiently employed technology to complete assembly tasks, elevate their working speed, and reduce the error rate. Nevertheless, there remains a lack of information concerning usability, intuitiveness, and ergonomic considerations. Furthermore, there’s an ongoing requirement for long-term studies, standardised methodologies, and statistical assessments conducted by a representative cross-section of participants. Beyond its influence on organisational social responsibility, this research aims to transcend the realm of cultivating a potential new workforce for manufacturing companies.

Abstract The growing expansion of the manufacturing sector, particularly in Mexico, has revealed a spectrum of nearshoring opportunities yet is paralleled by a discernible void in educational tools for various stakeholders, such as engineers, students, and decision-makers. This paper introduces a state-of-the-art framework, incorporating virtual reality (VR) and artificial intelligence (AI) to metamorphose the pedagogy of advanced manufacturing systems. Through a case study focused on the design, production, and evaluation of a robotic platform, the framework endeavors to offer an exhaustive educational experience via an interactive VR environment, encapsulating (1) Robotic platform system design and modeling, enabling users to immerse themselves in the design and simulation of robotic platforms under varied conditions; (2) Virtual manufacturing company, presenting a detailed virtual manufacturing setup to enhance users’ comprehension of manufacturing processes and systems, and problem-solving in realistic settings; and (3) Product evaluation, wherein users employ VR to meticulously assess the robotic platform, ensuring optimal functionality and customer satisfaction. This innovative framework melds theoretical acumen with practical application in advanced manufacturing, preparing entities to navigate Mexico’s manufacturing sector’s vibrant and competitive nearshoring landscape. It creates an immersive environment for understanding modern manufacturing challenges, fostering Mexico’s manufacturing sector growth, and maximizing nearshoring opportunities for stakeholders.

In sun-drenched regions, balancing solar exposure for thermal comfort and minimization of cooling energy presents a key challenge. While passive shading mitigates summer heat gain, it also hinders winter solar benefits, a problem that is echoed by active systems such as photovoltaic panels. Existing adaptive solutions, adjusting to seasonal sun angles, offer flexibility, but introduce complexity, maintenance demands, and potentially higher costs. This study introduces a novel static roof shading system that addresses this knowledge gap. It effectively blocks summer sunrays and allows winter insolation without seasonal adjustments or associated mechanisms. This “install and forget” approach promises improved thermal comfort and reduced energy consumption in hot climates. Rigorous energy simulations in nine different Mexican locations, using a 69 m2 household model, reveal significant temperature improvements. The system delivers up to 30.38% (above 5 MWh) equivalent annual reduction in HVAC usage and 71.3% relative increase in thermal comfort during hot periods. This sustainable solution offers valuable information to address indoor thermal challenges in high-temperature regions, contributing to the advancement of sustainable building technologies.

Implementing and deploying advanced technologies are principal in improving manufacturing processes, signifying a transformative stride in the industrial sector. Computer vision plays a crucial innovation role during this technological advancement, demonstrating broad applicability and profound impact across various industrial operations. This pivotal technology is not merely an additive enhancement but a revolutionary approach that redefines quality control, automation, and operational efficiency parameters in manufacturing landscapes. By integrating computer vision, industries are positioned to optimize their current processes significantly and spearhead innovations that could set new standards for future industrial endeavors. However, the integration of computer vision in these contexts necessitates comprehensive training programs for operators, given this advanced system’s complexity and abstract nature. Historically, training modalities have grappled with the complexities of understanding concepts as advanced as computer vision. Despite these challenges, computer vision has recently surged to the forefront across various disciplines, attributed to its versatility and superior performance, often matching or exceeding the capabilities of other established technologies. Nonetheless, there is a noticeable knowledge gap among students, particularly in comprehending the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) within Computer Vision. This disconnect underscores the need for an educational paradigm transcending traditional theoretical instruction. Cultivating a more practical understanding of the symbiotic relationship between AI and computer vision is essential. To address this, the current work proposes a project-based instructional approach to bridge the educational divide. This methodology will enable students to engage directly with the practical aspects of computer vision applications within AI. By guiding students through a hands-on project, they will learn how to effectively utilize a dataset, train an object detection model, and implement it within a microcomputer infrastructure. This immersive experience is intended to bolster theoretical knowledge and provide a practical understanding of deploying AI techniques within computer vision. The main goal is to equip students with a robust skill set that translates into practical acumen, preparing a competent workforce to navigate and innovate in the complex landscape of Industry 4.0. This approach emphasizes the criticality of adapting educational strategies to meet the evolving demands of advanced technological infrastructures. It ensures that emerging professionals are adept at harnessing the potential of transformative tools like computer vision in industrial settings.

In the present work, the powder metallurgy (PM) technique was used to synthesize biocompatible alloys Mg95–Zn5, Mg90–Zn10, and Mg85–Zn15 (wt %) under an argon atmosphere that employed stainless-steel vessels and spheres with a milling treatment of 360 rpm during 15 h. The obtained powder was consolidated through a sintering process for subsequent ion nitriding treatment to increase its corrosion resistance and hardness. The synthesized alloys analyzed by Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images showed a reduction in particle size with increasing grinding time. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) results showed the formation of a MgZn intermetallic phase and, furthermore, that no impurities were found during the grinding process. The surface-modified Mg–Zn alloys showed some improvement in terms of corrosion (Ecorr 26% and Icorr 13%) and microhardness (HV 40%) compared to Mg. Cytotoxicity evaluation was conducted via an MTT ((3-(4,5-DIMETHYLTHIAZOL-2-YL)-2,5-DIPHENYLTETRAZOLIUM BROMIDE)) assay, which revealed that the Mg–Zn alloys and nitrided samples did not exhibit cytotoxicity towards fibroblast cells after 96 h.

As Smart Cities development grows, deploying advanced technologies, such as the Internet of Things (IoT), Cyber–Physical Systems, and particularly, Artificial Intelligence (AI), becomes imperative for efficiently managing energy resources. These technologies serve to coalesce elements of the energy life cycle. By integrating smart infrastructures, including renewable energy, electric vehicles, and smart grids, AI emerges as a keystone, improving various urban processes. Using the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) and the Scopus database, this study meticulously reviews the existing literature, focusing on AI technologies in four principal energy domains: generation, transmission, distribution, and consumption. Additionally, this paper shows the technological gaps when AI is implemented in Smart Cities. A total of 122 peer-reviewed articles are analyzed, and the findings indicate that AI technologies have led to remarkable advancements in each domain. For example, AI algorithms have been employed in energy generation to optimize resource allocation and predictive maintenance, especially in renewable energy. The role of AI in anomaly detection and grid stabilization is significant in transmission and distribution. Therefore, the review outlines trends, high-impact articles, and emerging keyword clusters, offering a comprehensive analytical lens through which the multifaceted applications of AI in Smart City energy sectors can be evaluated. The objective is to provide an extensive analytical framework that outlines the AI techniques currently deployed and elucidates their connected implications for sustainable development in urban energy. This synthesis is aimed at policymakers, urban planners, and researchers interested in leveraging the transformative potential of AI to advance the sustainability and efficiency of Smart City initiatives in the energy sector.

Domotics (Home Automation) aims to improve the quality of life of people by integrating intelligent systems within inhabitable spaces. While traditionally associated with smart home systems, these technologies have potential for User Experience (UX) research. By emulating environments to test products and services, and integrating non-invasive user monitoring tools for emotion recognition, an objective UX evaluation can be performed. To achieve this objective, a testing booth was built and instrumented with devices based on KNX, an international standard for home automation, to conduct experiments and ensure replicability. A framework was designed based on Python to synchronize KNX systems with emotion recognition tools; the synchronization of these data allows finding patterns during the interaction process. To evaluate this framework, an experiment was conducted in a simulated laundry room within the testing booth to analyze the emotional responses of participants while interacting with prototypes of new detergent bottles. Emotional responses were contrasted with traditional questionnaires to determine the viability of using non-invasive methods. Using emulated environments alongside non-invasive monitoring tools allowed an immersive experience for participants. These results indicated that the testing booth can be implemented for a robust UX evaluation methodology.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a respiratory disorder characterized by frequent breathing pauses during sleep. The apnea–hypopnea index is a measure used to assess the severity of sleep apnea and the hourly rate of respiratory events. Despite numerous commercial devices available for apnea diagnosis and early detection, accessibility remains challenging for the general population, leading to lengthy wait times in sleep clinics. Consequently, research on monitoring and predicting OSA has surged. This comprehensive paper reviews devices, emphasizing distinctions among representative apnea devices and technologies for home detection of OSA. The collected articles are analyzed to present a clear discussion. Each article is evaluated according to diagnostic elements, the implemented automation level, and the derived level of evidence and quality rating. The findings indicate that the critical variables for monitoring sleep behavior include oxygen saturation (oximetry), body position, respiratory effort, and respiratory flow. Also, the prevalent trend is the development of level IV devices, measuring one or two signals and supported by prediction software. Noteworthy methods showcasing optimal results involve neural networks, deep learning, and regression modeling, achieving an accuracy of approximately 99%.

Current weather monitoring systems often remain out of reach for small-scale users and local communities due to their high costs and complexity. This paper addresses this significant issue by introducing a cost-effective, easy-to-use local weather station. Utilizing low-cost sensors, this weather station is a pivotal tool in making environmental monitoring more accessible and user-friendly, particularly for those with limited resources. It offers efficient in-site measurements of various environmental parameters, such as temperature, relative humidity, atmospheric pressure, carbon dioxide concentration, and particulate matter, including PM 1, PM 2.5, and PM 10. The findings demonstrate the station’s capability to monitor these variables remotely and provide forecasts with a high degree of accuracy, displaying an error margin of just 0.67%. Furthermore, the station’s use of the Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) model enables short-term, reliable forecasts crucial for applications in agriculture, transportation, and air quality monitoring. Furthermore, the weather station’s open-source nature significantly enhances environmental monitoring accessibility for smaller users and encourages broader public data sharing. With this approach, crucial in addressing climate change challenges, the station empowers communities to make informed decisions based on real-time data. In designing and developing this low-cost, efficient monitoring system, this work provides a valuable blueprint for future advancements in environmental technologies, emphasizing sustainability. The proposed automatic weather station not only offers an economical solution for environmental monitoring but also features a user-friendly interface for seamless data communication between the sensor platform and end users. This system ensures the transmission of data through various web-based platforms, catering to users with diverse technical backgrounds. Furthermore, by leveraging historical data through the ARIMA model, the station enhances its utility in providing short-term forecasts and supporting critical decision-making processes across different sectors.

Digital twins have provided valuable information for making effective decisions to ensure high efficiency in the manufacturing process using virtual models. Consequently, AC electric motors play a pivotal role in this framework, commonly employed as the primary electric actuators within Industry 4.0. In addition, classification systems could be implemented to identify normal and abnormal operating conditions in electric machines. Moreover, the execution of such classification systems in low-cost digital embedded systems is crucial, enabling continuous monitoring of AC electric machines. Self-Organized Maps (SOMs) offer a promising solution for implementing classification systems in low-cost embedded systems due to their ability to reduce system dimensionality and visually represent the model’s features, so local digital systems can be used as classification systems. Therefore, this paper aims to investigate the utilization of SOMs for classifying operating conditions in AC electric machines. Furthermore, when integrated into an embedded system, SOMs detect abnormal conditions in AC electric machines. A trained SOM is deployed on a C2000 microcontroller to exemplify the proposed approach. It should be noted that the proposed structure can be adapted for implementation with different systems in the context of Industry 4.0.

Introduction. Teaching industrial engineering in the second decade of the 21st century requires problem-solving and decision-making competencies oriented towards sustainable development. The growth of information metrics, the Internet of Things, virtual and augmented reality, and Artificial Intelligence bring more diverse, complex and imprecise challenges. This article aims to show a framework employing Challenge-based-learning, Project-based-learning and Computer-Aided technologies as dynamic resources supporting the comprehensive teaching of industrial engineers for industrial solutions oriented towards sustainable development. Materials and Methods. Our research involved a systemic analysis of the framework variables, the stages, and the partial results of its application in three academic years research. We selected several case studies to evaluate the professional competencies related to Sustainable Development Goals of industrial engineering students, using active learning tools integrated with Computer-Aided technologies. These cases illustrated the acquisition of Sustainable Development Goals competencies. Two simultaneous Latin American scenarios were examined (Mexico and Cuba). Results. Its main contribution is an appropriate framework for using Challenge-based-learning, Project-based-learning and Computer-Aided technologies as resources to develop professional competencies in industrial engineering and sustainable development. The control groups results demonstrate the utility, relevance, and accuracy of the proposed framework. Results. The study of the theoretical and methodological components of teaching Industrial Engineering, emphasizing competencies, at two universities in Latin American countries revealed the need to understand Computer-Aided technologies as a complex process. The proposed framework considers Computer-Aided technologies per the typologies of selected competencies integrated into the curricular design, including Challenge-based-learning and Project-based-learning, oriented toward the Sustainable Development Goals. The authors’ conclusions contribute to the development of active learning methods in engineering, supported by the application of CAD/CAM/CAE tools and focused on the fulfillment of sustainable development objectives. The materials of the article will be useful for the teaching of Industrial Engineering from a digital transformation perspective, contextualized in sustainable development environments.

Electric drives have been used in several applications, such as electric vehicles, industry 4.0, and robotics. Thus, it is mandatory to promote updated electric drive courses that allow students to design novel solutions in these engineering areas. However, traditional undergraduate courses that only cover theoretical aspects and do not allow students to interact and produce practical results through experimentation are insufficient today. The students are not exposed to educational innovation, so they have difficulties proposing original solutions. On the other hand, conventional theoretical and laboratory courses in which students follow specific directions for achieving predefined goals do not allow students to create novel solutions and integrate the innovation process as a standard methodology. Moreover, beginning in 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic forced professors to implement digital tools and materials to continue education intensively. This proposed course presents an alternative to promote practical and theoretical knowledge in students. Besides, engineering students must create innovative solutions to increase the quality of life in rural and urban communities, which calls for novel experimental approaches. Electric drives are fundamental elements in electric systems and industrial processes proposed to save energy or control electric machines. In addition, industries urge specialized engineers who can tackle complex industrial problems. The proposed educational methodology can be implemented in manufacturing, agriculture, robotics, and aerospace. Hence, low-cost devices to validate the proposed solutions became used by students to achieve novel solutions using electric drives. This paper describes an undergraduate course called “Digital Control of Electric Machines” (electric drives) and its implementation of the Tec21 Educational Model of Tecnologico de Monterrey, V Model, MATLAB/ Simulink, low-cost hardware, and complex thinking. The content of the course begins with electric machine models and power electronics that allow students to move from the basic to the advanced industrial electric drive problems in a friendly manner. In addition, the V-model and Modelo Tec 21 are used as fundamental pillars of the leading innovative structure of the proposed course. The results showed that students mastered several soft and hard skills to accomplish complex design goals, including controlling an electric rapid prototype vehicle.

Motor neuron diseases (MNDs) are a group of chronic neurological disorders characterized by the progressive failure of the motor system. Currently, these disorders do not have a definitive treatment; therefore, it is of huge importance to propose new and more advanced diagnoses and treatment options for MNDs. Nowadays, artificial intelligence is being applied to solve several real-life problems in different areas, including healthcare. It has shown great potential to accelerate the understanding and management of many health disorders, including neurological ones. Therefore, the main objective of this work is to offer a review of the most important research that has been done on the application of artificial intelligence models for analyzing motor disorders. This review includes a general description of the most commonly used AI algorithms and their usage in MND diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment. Finally, we highlight the main issues that must be overcome to take full advantage of what AI can offer us when dealing with MNDs.

Hands-free interfaces are essential to people with limited mobility for interacting with biomedical or electronic devices. However, there are not enough sensing platforms that quickly tailor the interface to these users with disabilities. Thus, this article proposes to create a sensing platform that could be used by patients with mobility impairments to manipulate electronic devices, thereby their independence will be increased. Hence, a new sensing scheme is developed by using three hands-free signals as inputs: voice commands, head movements, and eye gestures. These signals are obtained by using non-invasive sensors: a microphone for the speech commands, an accelerometer to detect inertial head movements, and an infrared oculography to register eye gestures. These signals are processed and received as the user's commands by an output unit, which provides several communication ports for sending control signals to other devices. The interaction methods are intuitive and could extend boundaries for people with disabilities to manipulate local or remote digital systems. As a study case, two volunteers with severe disabilities used the sensing platform to steer a power wheelchair. Participants performed 15 common skills for wheelchair users and their capacities were evaluated according to a standard test. By using the head control they obtained 93.3 and 86.6%, respectively for volunteers A and B; meanwhile, by using the voice control they obtained 63.3 and 66.6%, respectively. These results show that the end-users achieved high performance by developing most of the skills by using the head movements interface. On the contrary, the users were not able to develop most of the skills by using voice control. These results showed valuable information for tailoring the sensing platform according to the end-user needs.

Currently, the most used method to measure brain activity under a non-invasive procedure is the electroencephalogram (EEG). This is because of its high temporal resolution, ease of use, and safety. These signals can be used under a Brain Computer Interface (BCI) framework, which can be implemented to provide a new communication channel to people that are unable to speak due to motor disabilities or other neurological diseases. Nevertheless, EEG-based BCI systems have presented challenges to be implemented in real life situations for imagined speech recognition due to the difficulty to interpret EEG signals because of their low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). As consequence, in order to help the researcher make a wise decision when approaching this problem, we offer a review article that sums the main findings of the most relevant studies on this subject since 2009. This review focuses mainly on the pre-processing, feature extraction, and classification techniques used by several authors, as well as the target vocabulary. Furthermore, we propose ideas that may be useful for future work in order to achieve a practical application of EEG-based BCI systems toward imagined speech decoding.

Nowadays, there are many technological-intensive applications that claim to be “smart”. From smartphones to the smart grid, people relate the word smart with technical novelty, automation, enabled communication, and service integration. There is indeed a gap between those smart technologies and their intended “intelligence”; this has arisen an indirect debate between works focusing on automation and mechatronics design and others pursuing a conceptual approach based on fulfilling determinate objectives. One last approach relates the said smartness to deep learning methodologies. In this work, it is attempted to explore both perspectives by providing an overview of recent works around energy usage toward smart cities and the smart grid, pointing out the main conceptual pillars upon which both approaches stand. Certainly, there are enabling technologies supporting the smart concept overall; thus, this work addresses them to characterize “smart” not from technological or conceptual one-sided viewpoints but from their common backbone. Therefore, the interested reader can find in this work an integrative conceptualization of the smart context, a literature review of recent advances, and a deep discussion of how enabling technologies and current technological trends based on energy consumption are shaping the ongoing efforts toward a sustainable future. More importantly, a new approach to define smart in the said context is elaborated far from the typical misunderstanding of technological nesting or mere usage of “advanced” digital technologies. Rather, smartness is addressed by the integrative objectives the application pursues, the objectives set by its users’ intent, and the attained results in terms of public benefit.

A smart city is a city that binds together technology, society, and government to enable the existence of a smart economy, smart mobility, smart environment, smart living, smart people, and smart governance in order to reduce the environmental impact of cities and improve life quality. The first step to achieve a fully connected smart city is to start with smaller modules such as smart homes and smart buildings with energy management systems. Buildings are responsible for a third of the total energy consumption; moreover, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems account for more than half of the residential energy consumption in the United States. Even though connected thermostats are widely available, they are not used as intended since most people do not have the expertise to control this device to reduce energy consumption. It is commonly set according to their thermal comfort needs; therefore, unnecessary energy consumption is often caused by wasteful behaviors and the estimated energy saving is not reached. Most studies in the thermal comfort domain to date have relied on simple activity diaries to estimate metabolic rate and fixed values of clothing parameters for strategies to set the connected thermostat’s setpoints because of the difficulty in tracking those variables. Therefore, this paper proposes a strategy to save energy by dynamically changing the setpoint of a connected thermostat by human activity recognition based on computer vision preserving the occupant’s thermal comfort. With the use of a depth sensor in conjunction with an RGB (Red–Green–Blue) camera, a methodology is proposed to eliminate the most common challenges in computer vision: background clutter, partial occlusion, changes in scale, viewpoint, lighting, and appearance on human detection. Moreover, a Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) is implemented for human activity recognition (HAR) because of its data’s sequential characteristics, in combination with physiological parameters identification to estimate a dynamic metabolic rate. Finally, a strategy for dynamic setpoints based on the metabolic rate, predicted mean vote (PMV) parameter and the air temperature is simulated using EnergyPlus™ to evaluate the energy consumption in comparison with the expected energy consumption with fixed value setpoints. This work contributes with a strategy to reduce energy consumption up to 15% in buildings with connected thermostats from the successful implementation of the proposed method.

The demand for electrical energy has increased since the population of and automation in factories have grown. The manufacturing industry has been growing dramatically due to the fast-changing market, so electrical energy for manufacturing processes has increased. As a result, solar energy has been installed to supply electrical energy. Thus, assessing a solar panel company could be a complex task for manufacturing companies that need to assess, install, and operate solar panels when several criteria with different hierarchies from decision-makers are involved. In addition, the stages of a solar panel system could be divided into analysis, installation, operation, and disposal, and all of them must be considered. Thus, the solar panel company must provide a holistic solution for each stage of the solar panel lifespan. This paper provides a fuzzy decision-making approach (Fuzzy TOPSIS) to deal with the assessment of solar companies using the S4 framework in which the sensing, smart, sustainable, and social features are labeled with linguistic values that allow the evaluation of companies using fuzzy values and linguistic labels, instead of using crisp values that are difficult to define when decision-makers are evaluating a solar company for installation of the solar panels. The S4 features are considered the benefits of the evaluation. In the case study presented, three solar panel companies with different alternatives are evaluated on the basis of three decision-makers from manufacturing companies using the S4 framework. This paper considers the benefits of solar companies in the context of decision-makers participating in a multi-decision selection of such a company to install solar panels, so that the selection process is more effective. Thus, the proposed Fuzzy TOPSIS method proved efficient when selecting a solar panel company from among many options that best meets the needs of manufacturing companies.

This paper presents a new direct maximum power point tracking (MPPT) with a reference voltage (Vref) based on the metaheuristic earthquake algorithm (EA) where the optimization variable is the Vref for hard-switching converters. The efficiency and performance of EA-MPPT-Vref is compared with the perturb-and-observe (P&O) counterpart technique due to the fact that it is widely used for commercial products. Static and dynamic responses for both MPPT strategies are evaluated, which correspond to steady-state oscillations when they are near the maximum power point (MPP), and the tracking-speed, respectively. The efficiency was evaluated with the EN 50530 standard. The results show that the new MPPT proposed is a competitive method using the EA to obtain the optimal voltage reference. From static results, EA-MPPT VP presented a better efficiency of 5.13% and 3.23% for European and California energy commission (CEC) efficiency, respectively. Whereas, from dynamic results, MPPT-Vref techniques presented an efficiency from 95.13% to 99.91%, and 99.01% to 99.91% of the total power of the PV system for P&O and EA strategies, respectively.

Nowadays, photovoltaic (PV) systems are responsible for over 994 TWH of the worldwide energy supply, which highlights their relevance and also explains why so much research has arisen to enhance their implementation; among this research, different optimization techniques have been widely studied to maximize the energy harvested under different environmental conditions (maximum power point tracking) and to optimize the efficiency of the required power electronics for the implementation of MPPT algorithms. On the one hand, an earthquake optimization algorithm (EA) was introduced as a multi-objective optimization tool for DC–DC converter design, mostly to overcome component shortages by optimal replacement, but it had never been tested (until now) for PV applications. On the other hand, the original EA was also taken as inspiration for a promising EA-based MPPT, which presumably enabled a solution with simple parametric calibration and improved dynamic behavior; yet prior to this research, the EA-MPPT had never been experimentally validated. Hence, this work fills the gap and provides the first implementation of the EA-based MPPT, validating its performance and suitability under real physical conditions, where the experimental testbed was optimized through the EA design methodology for DC–DC converters and implemented for the first time for PV applications. The results present energy waste reduction between 12 and 36% compared to MPPTs based on perturb and observe and particle swarm optimization; meanwhile, the designed converter achieved 7.3% current ripple, which is between 2.7 and 12.7% less than some industrial converters, and it had almost 90% efficiency at nominal operation. Finally, the EA-MPPT proved simple enough to be implemented even through an 8-bit MCU (ATmega328P from Arduino UNO).

In developing distribution networks, the deployment of alternative generation sources is heavily motivated by the growing energy demand, as by environmental and political motives. Consequently, microgrids are implemented to coordinate the operation of these energy generation assets. Microgrids are systems that rely on power conversion technologies based on high-frequency switching devices to generate a stable distribution network. However, disrupting scenarios can occur in deployed systems, causing faults at the sub-component and the system level of microgrids where its identification is an economical and technological challenge. This paradigm can be addressed by having a digital twin of the low-level components to monitor and analyze their response and identify faults to take preventive or corrective actions. Nonetheless, accurate execution of digital twins of low-level components in traditional simulation systems is a difficult task to achieve due to the fast dynamics of the power converter devices, leading to inaccurate results and false identification of system faults. Therefore, this work proposes a fault identification framework for low-level components that includes the combination of Real-Time systems with the Digital Twin concept to guarantee the dynamic consistency of the low-level components. The proposed framework includes an offline trained Self Organized Map Neural Network in a hexagonal topology to identify such faults within a Real-Time system. As a case study, the proposed framework is applied to a three-phase two-level inverter connected to its digital model in a Real-Time simulator for open circuit faults identification.

Introducción: En la última década el maquinado de alta velocidad ha sido de especial interés para los sectores académico e industrial. Su influencia en el desempeño del mecanizado por arranque de virutas permite un alto valor de metal removido y un buen acabado superficial. Objetivos: en este trabajo se muestra la determinación de indicadores tecnológicos y parámetros de corte en el maquinado de alta velocidad en aceros con la utilización combinada de métodos experimentales, de simulación numérica y de inteligencia artificial. Métodos: Se realizaron ensayos experimentales en el maquinado de alta velocidad de varios tipos de aceros, utilizando diversas herramientas de corte y condiciones de elaboración. Se utilizaron métodos estadísticos matemáticos para los análisis de correlación, se simularon por el método de los elementos finitos las condiciones experimentales y a través de herramientas de inteligencia artificial, se obtuvieron modelos predictivos combinados. Resultados: Se definieron nuevos criterios para el estudio de la maquinabilidad de aceros que permitan evaluar su desempeño; se obtuvieron modelos matemáticos de correlación entre las variables fundamentales del maquinado de alta velocidad de aceros por métodos experimentales; se obtuvieron modelos numéricos por el método de elementos finitos que complementan los ensayos experimentales; y se definió e implementó mediante herramientas de inteligencia artificial, la predicción de indicadores tecnológicos.

Currently, the industrial sector consumes more than 60% of the energy produced in Mexico, mainly from fossil fuels, causing negative impacts on the environment and human beings. Solar energy helps companies diversify their energy sources, generate savings, and reduce dependence on fossil fuels. Moreover, the environmental impact can be reduced when CO2 emissions are reduced. Nevertheless, in Mexico, less than 3.5% of the electricity comes from solar energy, and along with a lack of information about the technical and social aspects involved in photovoltaic (PV) systems, it is difficult for companies to analyze and evaluate relevant data, and thus make effective decisions based on their needs. As such, companies cannot understand the complete lifecycle of PV systems, and, usually, the economic, environmental, and technical decisions are made only using the installation analysis, which is only one stage in the lifespan of PV systems. This paper proposes an S4 framework with the sensing, smart, sustainable, and social features that small and medium-sized companies must consider to install, operate, and dispose of PV systems, considering the Mexican context. The current literature does not show a complete classification to cover the essential S4 features to describe PV systems, so companies only have partial information when deciding about the installation of PV systems. This framework considers all the needs that may exist during the PV systems’ lifecycle, making a detailed evaluation of each of its elements in each lifecycle stage. Consequently, this S4 framework gives a complete guideline allowing companies to decide on PV systems. Finally, this paper presents a case study about a Mexican company that uses the proposed S4 framework to analyze the PV’s lifespan.

Energy-saving is a mandatory research topic since the growing population demands additional energy yearly. Moreover, climate change requires more attention to reduce the impact of generating more CO2. As a result, some new research areas need to be explored to create innovative energy-saving alternatives in electrical devices that have high energy consumption. One research area of interest is the computer visual classification for reducing energy consumption and keeping thermal comfort in thermostats. Usually, connected thermostats obrtain information from sensors for detecting persons and scheduling autonomous operations to save energy. However, there is a lack of knowledge of how computer vision can be deployed in embedded digital systems to analyze clothing insulation in connected thermostats to reduce energy consumption and keep thermal comfort. The clothing classification algorithm embedded in a digital system for saving energy could be a companion device in connected thermostats to obtain the clothing insulation. Currently, there is no connected thermostat in the market using complementary computer visual classification systems to analyze the clothing insulation factor. Hence, this proposal aims to develop and evaluate an embedded real-time clothing classifier that could help to improve the efficiency of heating and ventilation air conditioning systems in homes or buildings. This paper compares six different one-stage object detection and classification algorithms trained with a small custom dataset in two embedded systems and a personal computer to compare the models. In addition, the paper describes how the classifier could interact with the thermostat to tune the temperature set point to save energy and keep thermal comfort. The results confirm that the proposed real-time clothing classifier could be implemented as a companion device in connected thermostats to provide additional information to end-users about making decisions on saving energy.

In 2021, the residential sector had an electricity consumption of around 39% in México. Householders influence the quantity of energy they manage in a home due to their preferences, culture, and economy. Hence, profiling the householders’ behavior in communities allows designers or engineers to build strategies that promote energy reductions. The household socially connected products ease routine tasks and help profile the householder. Furthermore, gamification strategies model householders’ habits by enhancing services through ludic experiences. Therefore, a gamified smart community concept emerged during this research as an understanding that this type of community does not need a physical location but has similar characteristics. Thus, this paper proposes a three-step framework to tailor interfaces. During the first step, the householder type and consumption level were analyzed using available online databases for Mexico. Then, two artificial neural networks were built, trained, and deployed during the second step to tailor an interactive interface. Thus, the third step deploys an interactive and tailored dashboard. Moreover, the research analysis reflected the predominant personality traits. Besides, some locations have more electricity consumption than others associated with the relative humidity, the outdoor temperature, or the poverty level. The interactive dashboard provides insights about the game elements needed depending on the personality traits, location, and electricity bill. Therefore, this proposal considers all householders (typical and non-typical users) to deploy tailored interfaces designed for smart communities. Currently, the game elements proposed during this research are reported by the literature, so their adoption is assured.

This paper presents Acosta’s (Acosta et al., 2016) constitutive analytical model, which is used for the mechanical analysis of intralaminar and global stresses in symmetrical laminated composite materials subject to axial load. The model is composed of both a laminated constitutive model and a constitutive model for each layer. The model and its method of analysis were used to obtain the elastic properties of the core of a symmetric metal sandwich plate and the properties of a non-symmetric bimetallic material. The model is fed with information from strain gages, which register deformations at the boundary of the compounds analyzed under axial load. In electric drives, the lifetime of the power electronics stage is strongly reduced by the command signals from the speed controller because the features of the power electronics stage are not included in the controller design. A reduction in the power electronics lifetime generates premature fault conditions during the operation of electric drives, which directly affects the industrial processes where the power electronic stage is used. Thus, power electronics stages for controllers are frequently overdesigned, which reduces their efficiency and increments their weight, size, and cost. Power electronics stages are generally designed using essential electronic devices, such as insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs) or metal-oxide-semiconductor field effect transistors (MOSFETs) that have limited lifetimes. In electric drives, these power electronics components work under high switching frequencies to drive high electric power to achieve the desired mechanical references, such as speed and position in electric brushless dc motors. In this paper, we propose power electronics lifetime optimization and a faster speed response in a brushless dc motor drive by a fuzzy particle swarm optimization (Fuzzy-PSO) controller, which is a fuzzy logic controller (FLC) modified by PSO. Moreover, an objective function which includes the desired speed and the reference temperature is proposed. The proposed controller is compared with a conventional proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller and FLC via co-simulation in Multisim and LabVIEW software. The results confirm that the Fuzzy-PSO has a superior speed performance and improves the lifetime in the power electronics stages. This proposal is an important contribution to industrial electric drives that require incrementing the power electronics lifetime.

Thermal comfort is associated with clothing insulation, conveying a level of satisfaction with the thermal surroundings. Besides, clothing insulation is commonly associated with indoor thermal comfort. However, clothing classification in smart homes might save energy when the end-user wears appropriate clothes to save energy and obtain thermal comfort. Furthermore, object detection and classification through Convolutional Neural Networks has increased over the last decade. There are real-time clothing garment classifiers, but these are oriented towards single garment recognition for texture, fabric, shape, or style. Consequently, this paper proposes a CNN model classification for the implementation of these classifiers on cameras. First, the Fashion MNIST was analyzed and compared with the VGG16, Inceptionvv4, TinyYOLOv3, and ResNet18 classification algorithms to determine the best clo classifier. Then, for real-time analysis, a new dataset with 12,000 images was created and analyzed with the YOLOv3 and TinyYOLO. Finally, an Azure Kinect DT was employed to analyze the clo value in real-time. Moreover, real-time analysis can be employed with any other webcam. The model recognizes at least three garments of a clothing ensemble, proving that it identifies more than a single clothing garment. Besides, the model has at least 90% accuracy in the test dataset, ensuring that it can be generalized and is not overfitting.

Since the COVID-19 Pandemic began, there have been several efforts to create new technology to mitigate the impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic around the world. One of those efforts is to design a new task force, robots, to deal with fundamental goals such as public safety, clinical care, and continuity of work. However, those characteristics need new products based on features that create them more innovatively and creatively. Those products could be designed using the S4 concept (sensing, smart, sustainable, and social features) presented as a concept able to create a new generation of products. This paper presents a low-cost robot, Robocov, designed as a rapid response against the COVID-19 Pandemic at Tecnologico de Monterrey, Mexico, with implementations of artificial intelligence and the S4 concept for the design. Robocov can achieve numerous tasks using the S4 concept that provides flexibility in hardware and software. Thus, Robocov can impact positivity public safety, clinical care, continuity of work, quality of life, laboratory and supply chain automation, and non-hospital care. The mechanical structure and software development allow Robocov to complete support tasks effectively so Robocov can be integrated as a technological tool for achieving the new normality’s required conditions according to government regulations. Besides, the reconfiguration of the robot for moving from one task (robot for disinfecting) to another one (robot for detecting face masks) is an easy endeavor that only one operator could do. Robocov is a teleoperated system that transmits information by cameras and an ultrasonic sensor to the operator. In addition, pre-recorded paths can be executed autonomously. In terms of communication channels, Robocov includes a speaker and microphone. Moreover, a machine learning algorithm for detecting face masks and social distance is incorporated using a pre-trained model for the classification process. One of the most important contributions of this paper is to show how a reconfigurable robot can be designed under the S3 concept and integrate AI methodologies. Besides, it is important that this paper does not show specific details about each subsystem in the robot.

The lack of interest of children at school is one of the biggest problems that Mexican education faces. Two important factors causing this lack of interest are the predominant methodology used in Mexican schools and the technology as a barrier for attention. The methodology that institutions have followed has become an issue because of its very traditional approach, with the professor giving all the theoretical material to the students while they listen and memorize the contents, and, if we add the issue of the growing access to technological devices for students, children carrying a phone are more likely to be distracted. This study aims to integrate technology through assistive robots as a beneficial tool for educators, in order to improve the attention span of students by making the learning process in multiple areas of the Mexican curriculum more dynamic, therefore obtaining better results. To prove this, four different approaches were implemented; three in elementary schools and one in higher education: the LEGO® robotic kit and the NAO robot for STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) teaching, the NAO robot for physical education (PE), and the PhantomX Hexapod, respectively. Each of these technological approaches was applied by considering both control and experimental groups, in order to compare the data and provide conclusions. Finally, this study proves that the attention span is indeed improved as a result of implementing robotic platforms during the teaching process, allowing the children to become more motivated during their PE class and become more proactive and retain more information during their STEM classes.

Stacking fault energy (SFE) is an important parameter to be considered in the design of austenitic stainless steels (SS) due to its influence on magnetic susceptibility, atomic order changes and intergranular corrosion resistance. An extensive review of specialized literature was examined in order to understand the different methods that have been developed for the calculation of SFE. Characterization by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), linear expressions from data processing and first-principles quantum mechanics approximations are some techniques that have been used for the calculation of SFE. In the present work a feed forward backpropagation artificial neural network (ANN) was developed to predict the SFE within given specific ranges of chemical compositions for austenitic SS. The experimental data were extracted from a research work reported by Yonezawa et al [1], and then were analyzed for three different heat treatment conditions. The present model predicts SFE values with a correlation coefficient of 0.99, which is a minor error when is compared with other works in the literature.

A microgrid including distributed generators can operate connected to the main electrical network or in an isolated manner, referred to as island operation. The transition between both states can occur voluntarily, but a disconnection can also happen unexpectedly. The associated transients can be harmful to the grid, and compensating actions must be triggered to avoid service interruption, preserve power quality, and minimize the possibility of faults; island detection methods are essential to this end. Such techniques typically depend on communication networks or on the introduction of minor electrical disturbances to identify and broadcast unexpected islanding events. However, local energy resources are distributed, variable, and are expected to be integrated in a plug-and-play manner; then, conventional island detection strategies can be ineffective as they rely on specific infrastructure. To overcome those problems, this work proposes a straightforward, distributed island detection technique only relying on local electrical measurements, available at the output of each generating unit. The proposed method is based on the estimated power-frequency ratio, associated with the stiffness of the grid. A “stiffness change” effectively reveals island operating conditions, discards heavy load variations, and enables independent (distributed) operation. The proposal was validated through digital simulations and an experimental test-bed. Results showed that the proposed technique can effectively detect island operation at each generating unit interacting in the microgrid. Moreover, it was about three times faster than other reported techniques.

Automobile security became an essential theme over the last years, and some automakers invested much money for collision avoidance systems, but personalization of their driving systems based on the user’s behavior was not explored in detail. Furthermore, efficiency gains could be had with tailored systems. In Mexico, 80% of automobile accidents are caused by human beings; the remaining 20% are related to other issues such as mechanical problems. Thus, 80% represents a significant opportunity to improve safety and explore driving efficiency gains. Moreover, when driving aggressively, it could be connected with mental health as a post-traumatic stress disorder. This paper proposes a Tailored Collision Mitigation Braking System, which evaluates the driver’s personality driving treats through signal detection theory to create a cognitive map that understands the driving personality of the driver. In this way, aggressive driving can be detected; the system is then trained to recognize the personality trait of the driver and select the appropriate stimuli to achieve the optimal driving output. As a result, when aggressive driving is detected continuously, an automatic alert could be sent to the health specialists regarding particular risky behavior linked with mental problems or drug consumption. Thus, the driving profile test could also be used as a detector for health problems.

Depression is a common mental illness characterized by sadness, lack of interest, or pleasure. According to the DSM-5, there are nine symptoms, from which an individual must present 4 or 5 in the last two weeks to fulfill the diagnosis criteria of depression. Nevertheless, the common methods that health care professionals use to assess and monitor depression symptoms are face-to-face questionnaires leading to time-consuming or expensive methods. On the other hand, smart homes can monitor householders’ health through smart devices such as smartphones, wearables, cameras, or voice assistants connected to the home. Although the depression disorders at smart homes are commonly oriented to the senior sector, depression affects all of us. Therefore, even though an expert needs to diagnose the depression disorder, questionnaires as the PHQ-9 help spot any depressive symptomatology as a pre-diagnosis. Thus, this paper proposes a three-step framework; the first step assesses the nine questions to the end-user through ALEXA or a gamified HMI. Then, a fuzzy logic decision system considers three actions based on the nine responses. Finally, the last step considers these three actions: continue monitoring through Alexa and the HMI, suggest specialist referral, and mandatory specialist referral.

In 50–60% of cases, systemic anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL) is characterized by the t(2;5)(p23;q35) or one of its variants, considered to be causative for anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK)-positive (ALK+) ALCL. Key pathogenic events in ALK-negative (ALK−) ALCL are less well defined. We have previously shown that deregulation of oncogenic genes surrounding the chromosomal breakpoints on 2p and 5q is a unifying feature of both ALK+ and ALK− ALCL and predisposes for occurrence of t(2;5). Here, we report that the invariant chain of the MHC-II complex CD74 or li, which is encoded on 5q32, can act as signaling molecule, and whose expression in lymphoid cells is usually restricted to B cells, is aberrantly expressed in T cell-derived ALCL. Accordingly, ALCL shows an altered DNA methylation pattern of the CD74 locus compared to benign T cells. Functionally, CD74 ligation induces cell death of ALCL cells. Furthermore, CD74 engagement enhances the cytotoxic effects of conventional chemotherapeutics in ALCL cell lines, as well as the action of the ALK-inhibitor crizotinib in ALK+ ALCL or of CD95 death-receptor signaling in ALK− ALCL. Additionally, a subset of ALCL cases expresses the proto-oncogene MET, which can form signaling complexes together with CD74. Finally, we demonstrate that the CD74-targeting antibody-drug conjugate STRO-001 efficiently and specifically kills CD74-positive ALCL cell lines in vitro. Taken together, these findings enabled us to demonstrate aberrant CD74-expression in ALCL cells, which might serve as tool for the development of new treatment strategies for this lymphoma entity.

Education 4.0 demands a flexible combination of digital literacy, critical thinking, and problem-solving in educational settings linked to real-world scenarios. Haptic technology incorporates the sense of touch into a visual simulator to enrich the user’s sensory experience, thus supporting a meaningful learning process. After developing several visuo-haptic simulators, our team identified serious difficulties and important challenges to achieve successful learning environments within the framework of Education 4.0. This paper presents the VIS-HAPT methodology for developing realistic visuo-haptic scenarios to promote the learning of science and physics concepts for engineering students. This methodology consists of four stages that integrate different aspects and processes leading to meaningful learning experiences for students. The different processes that must be carried out through the different stages, the difficulties to overcome and recommendations on how to face them are all described herein. The results are encouraging since a significant decrease (of approximately 40%) in the development and implementation times was obtained as compared with previous efforts. The quality of the visuo-haptic environments was also enhanced. Student perceptions of the benefits of using visuo-haptic simulators to enhance their understanding of physics concepts also improved after using the proposed methodology. The incorporation of haptic technologies in higher education settings will certainly foster better student performance in subsequent real environments related to Industry 4.0.

In the science and engineering fields of study, a hands-on learning experience is as crucial a part of the learning process for the student as the theoretical aspect of a given subject. With the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, educational institutions were forced to migrate to digital platforms to ensure the continuity of the imparted lectures. The online approach can be challenging for engineering programs, especially in courses that employ practical laboratory methods as the primary teaching strategies. Laboratory courses that include specialized hardware and software cannot migrate to a virtual environment without compromising the advantages that a hands-on method provides to the engineering student. This work assesses different approaches in the virtualization process of a laboratory facility, diving these into key factors such as required communication infrastructure and available technologies; it opens a discussion on the trends and possible obstacles in the virtualization of a Real-Time (RT) laboratory intended for Microgrid education in a power electronics laboratory course, exposing the main simulation strategies that can be used in an RT environment and how these have different effects on the learning process of student, as well as addressing the main competencies an engineering student can strengthen through interaction with RT simulation technologies.

In this study, a nano-composite material of a nanostructured Al-based matrix reinforced with Fe40Al intermetallic particles was produced by ball milling. During the non-equilibria processing, the powder mixtures with the compositions of Al-XFe40Al (X = 5, 10, and 15 vol. %) were mechanically milled under a low energy regime. The processed Al-XFe40Al powder mixtures were subjected to uniaxial pressing at room temperature. Afterward, the specimens were subjected to a sintering process under an inert atmosphere. In this thermal treatment, the specimens were annealed at 500 °C for 2 h. The sintering process was performed under an argon atmosphere. The crystallite size of the Al decreased as the milling time advanced. This behavior was observed in the three specimens. During the ball milling stage, the powder mixtures composed of Al-XFe40Al did not experience a mechanochemical reaction that could lead to the generation of secondary phases. The crystallite size of the Al displayed a predominant tendency to decrease during the ball milling process. The microstructure of the consolidated specimens indicated a uniform dispersion of the intermetallic reinforcement phases in the Al matrix. Moreover, according to the Vickers microhardness tests, the hardness varied linearly with the increase in the concentration of the Fe40Al intermetallic phase present in the composite material. The presented graphs indicate that the hardness increased almost linearly with the increasing dislocation density and with the reduction in grain sizes (both occurring during the non-equilibria processing). The microstructural and mechanical properties reported in this paper provide the aluminum matrix composite materials with the ideal conditions to be considered candidates for applications in the automotive and aeronautical industries.

Education 4.0 is looking to prepare future scientists and engineers not only by granting them with knowledge and skills but also by giving them the ability to apply them to solve real life problems through the implementation of disruptive technologies. As a consequence, there is a growing demand for educational material that introduces science and engineering students to technologies, such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Brain–Computer Interfaces (BCI). Thus, our contribution towards the development of this material is to create a test bench for BCI given the basis and analysis on how they can be discriminated against. This is shown using different AI methods: Fisher Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA), Support Vector Machines (SVM), Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), Restricted Boltzmann Machines (RBM) and Self-Organizing Maps (SOM), allowing students to see how input changes alter their performance. These tests were done against a two-class Motor Image database. First, using a large frequency band and no filtering eye movement. Secondly, the band was reduced and the eye movement was filtered. The accuracy was analyzed obtaining values around 70∼80% for all methods, excluding SVM and SOM mapping. Accuracy and mapping differentiability increased for some subjects for the second scenario 70∼85%, meaning either their band with the most significant information is on that limited space or the contamination because of eye movement was better mitigated by the regression method. This can be translated to saying that these methods work better under limited spaces. The outcome of this work is useful to show future scientists and engineers how BCI experiments are conducted while teaching them the basics of some AI techniques that can be used in this and other several experiments that can be carried on the framework of Education 4.0.

One of the main focuses of Education 4.0 is to provide students with knowledge on disruptive technologies, such as Machine Learning (ML), as well as the skills to implement this knowledge to solve real-life problems. Therefore, both students and professors require teaching and learning tools that facilitate the introduction to such topics. Consequently, this study looks forward to contributing to the development of those tools by introducing the basic theory behind three machine learning classifying algorithms: K-Nearest-Neighbor (KNN), Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA), and Simple Perceptron; as well as discussing the diverse advantages and disadvantages of each method. Moreover, it is proposed to analyze how these methods work on different conditions through their implementation over a test bench. Thus, in addition to the description of each algorithm, we discuss their application to solving three different binary classification problems using three different datasets, as well as comparing their performances in these specific case studies. The findings of this study can be used by teachers to provide students the basic knowledge of KNN, LDA, and perceptron algorithms, and, at the same time, it can be used as a guide to learn how to apply them to solve real-life problems that are not limited to the presented datasets.

Nowadays, the concept of Industry 4.0 aims to improve factories’ competitiveness. Usually, manufacturing production is guided by standards to segment and distribute its processes and implementations. However, industry 4.0 requires innovative proposals for disruptive technologies that engage the entire production process in factories, not just a partial improvement. One of these disruptive technologies is the Digital Twin (DT). This advanced virtual model runs in real-time and can predict, detect, and classify normal and abnormal operating conditions in factory processes. The Automation Pyramid (AP) is a conceptual element that enables the efficient distribution and connection of different actuators in enterprises, from the shop floor to the decision-making levels. When a DT is deployed into a manufacturing system, generally, the DT focuses on the low-level that is named field level, which includes the physical devices such as controllers, sensors, and so on. Thus, the partial automation based on the DT is accomplished, and the information between all manufacturing stages could be decremented. Hence, to achieve a complete improvement of the manufacturing system, all the automation pyramid levels must be included in the DT concept. An artificial intelligent management system could create an interconnection between them that can manage the information. As a result, this paper proposed a complete DT structure covering all automation pyramid stages using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to model each stage of the AP based on the Digital Twin concept. This work proposes a virtual model for each level of the traditional AP and the interactions among them to flow and control information efficiently. Therefore, the proposed model is a valuable tool in improving all levels of an industrial process. In addition, It is presented a case study where the DT concept for modular workstations underpins the development of technologies within the framework of the Automation Pyramid model is implemented into a didactic manufacturing system.

Nowadays, the growth in the consumption of energy and the need to face pollution resulting from its generation are causing concern for consumers and providers. Energy consumption in residential buildings and houses is about 22% of total energy production. Cutting-edge energy managers aim to optimize electrical devices in homes, taking into account users’ patterns, goals, and needs, by creating energy consumption awareness and helping current change habits. In this way, energy manager systems (EMSs) monitor and manage electrical appliances, automate and schedule actions, and make suggestions regarding electrical consumption. Furthermore, gamification strategies may change energy consumption patterns through energy managers, which are seen as an option to save energy and money. Therefore, this paper proposes a personalized gamification strategy for an EMS through an adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) decision-making engine to classify the level of electrical consumption and persuade the end-user to reduce and modify consumption patterns, saving energy and money with gamified motivations. These strategies have proven to be effective in changing consumer behavior with intrinsic and extrinsic motivations. The interfaces consider three cases for summer and winter periods to calculate the saving-energy potentials: (1) for a type of user that is interested in home-improvement efforts while helping to save energy; (2) for a type of user that is advocating to save energy; (3) for a type of user that is not interested in saving energy. Hence, each interface considers the end-user’s current consumption and the possibility to modify their consumption habits using their current electrical devices. Finally, an interface displaying the electrical consumption for each case exemplifies its linkage with EMSs.

Engineering education pushes the creation of new technology to solve community problems. The process of technology transfer promotes educational innovation in universities, a vital process that can improve citizens’ quality of life in cities and rural communities. As a result, university technology transfer offices (TTOs) have to create strategies that motivate students and researchers to generate technology. Thus, a primary challenge that TTOs face is to know and communicate the income potential compared to their much more predictable and limited expense budgets. Institutional budgeting for a TTO’s growth would be simplified if the office were on a solid financial footing, i.e., breaking even or making a financial return. Many offices assume that income is unpredictable, that it is a lottery, luck, and more stakes in the fire improve the odds of hitting a winner, etc. These common assumptions or beliefs provide only a vague insight into how to move an intellectual property (IP) portfolio strategy forward. How can a TTO be assessed for quantitative value and not just be a cost center adding qualitative value? This paper illustrates the first steps to understanding how to project potential income versus a much more predictable expense budget, which would allow universities to improve their technology transfer strategy and results. As a result, TTOs would operate under a more sustainable IP portfolio strategy, promote educational innovation in universities, and generate a more significant community impact.

El estudio tiene como finalidad correlacionar los estilos de vida y factores so cioeconómicos con la salud de los estudiantes de las electivas de actividad física y deporte de la Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, sede Bogotá-Colombia. Es un estudio cuantitativo descriptivo, de corte transversal, con una muestra de 1410 estudiantes con edad entre 24 y 29 años que corresponde a 748 mujeres y 662 hom bres. Fue aplicado un cuestionario estandarizado propuesto por Nahas (2013), que presenta los factores nutricionales, el estrés, la actividad física, el comportamiento preventivo y las relaciones sociales como componentes que afectan la salud de las personas y están asociados al desarrollo de las enfermedades crónicas no transmi sibles. La menor calificación se encontró en los factores nutricionales, de actividad física y de conducta preventiva. Por otro lado, se encontró una mejor calificación en las relaciones sociales y el control del estrés. Los resultados socioeconómicos demuestran que los estudiantes tienen preferencia por deportes individuales; viven con los padres y familiares, ubicados en estrato de clase media, y se presenta un alto índice de padres con formación universitaria. Se concluye que existe una tendencia de estilos de vida no saludables que puede afectar negativamente la salud de esta población. Es importante desarrollar estrategias de intervención en el contexto social, para generar un cambio de conducta y adoptar un estilo de vida saludable para mejorar la calidad de vida.

The mechanical characterization of the engineering materials is always a topic of interest to engineers and researchers. The objective of this work is to study the butt welded joint resilience and toughness by means of the tensile test and the numerical simulation. The specimens were fabricated by welding two plates of AISI 1015 steel with an E6013 electrode. An algorithm of the numerical integration based on the trapezoid method that allowed calculating the resilience and toughness as the area under the stress - strain curve was implemented. The algorithm was validated by comparing the numerical results of the resilience with those obtained by the analytical method. The results show that the resilience and the toughness values computed with the experimental stress - strain curve, they have correspondence with the same values calculated with the numerical simulation.
