The article presents a study on the role and usefulness of student union in the functioning of Hamline University in Minnesota. The study sought to describe the physical plant of the recreational part of the union's facilities, to discover the extent and intensity of student use of its recreational and refreshment facilities, and to obtain some indication of the students' attitudes toward the union facilities provided for them. The study shows that majority of the students who use the Union facilities do not feel a large measure of responsibility for the upkeep of the Union's appearance and equipment.

This article reports an attempt to test the basic assumption that the desire to migrate is inversely related to the degree of satisfaction with the home community, and some related factors on a sample of potential migrants, namely, high school seniors in a rural area of Michigan. It presents a study of the migration attitudes of farm youth from rural areas with relatively high outmigration. It examines some of the social-psychological aspects of migration, which have received relatively less attention than demographic factors. More specifically, this study, examines the residential, occupational, and educational plans of a sample of high school seniors from four rural counties of central Michigan. The focus of this article is the anticipated migration behavior of rural high school seniors about to graduate. In the spring of 1958 a self-administered questionnaire, designed to elicit information on community satisfaction, occupational, residential, and educational aspirations was submitted to the 545 respondents in this study.

Data from a study of a non-profit, community hospital organization provided evidence for the establishment and test of hypotheses of organizational persistence and change. Three sub-systems within the hospital-the board of directors, the medical staff, and the administration-were the major units of observation and were investigated by interviews from a sample of actors within the sub-systems. The major findings reveal that an organization can persist, expand, and change while actors within significant, decision-making sub-systems do not use or agree upon a major organizational goal. A field study of stratification in a small community in central Pennsylvania provides data which substantiate the following viewpoints on stratification research: (1) The one-sided emphasis on prestige stratification in recent literature is not justified, since other stratification variables yield as good or better predictions of dependent variables. (2) None of the methods yet proposed for delineating "classes" provides a unique solution to the problems of the number and boundaries of classes. Hence, any tendency to reify empirical schemes of classes must be avoided. (3) The structure of prestige in a small community may be fruitfully viewed as a function of stratification in the "mass society." Sound generalizations about stratification can be drawn from community studies only if this relationship is made explicit. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
