Little is known about the role of light intensity in modulating plant responses to stress due to water deficit (WD). Thus, the objective of this study was to determine the WD and contrasting irradiance effects on the physiology, anatomy, and grain yield of soybean plants. The experimental design was a randomized block in a growth chamber and a 2 × 2 factorial treatment arrangement: 90% (well-watered, WW) and 40% (WD) of soil field capacities (FC); and 750 (medium irradiance, MI) and 1500 (higher irradiance, HI) μmol (photons) m-2 s-1 irradiance. The WD caused a lower photosynthetic rate - as well as observed in the light curve and in the relative parameters, such as apparent quantum efficiency -, less investment in shoot biomass and pollen grain germination, resulting in lower grain yield. However, there was an increase in non-photochemical energy dissipation, a higher concentration of total soluble sugars, proline, and malondialdehyde. The WD + MI-soybean plants developed thicker spongy parenchyma (related to higher mesophilic conductance of CO2 ). In the WW + HI condition the palisade parenchyma was thicker, conferring maintenance of photosynthetic efficiency. In addition, there was an increase in the activity of superoxide dismutase, catalase, peroxidase, and ascorbate peroxidase antioxidant enzymes in leaves due to HI, regardless of FC. This induced higher energy expenditure, reflected in the reduction of the number of leaf and branches, leaf area, dry mass of leaves and stem in the WW + HI. Interestingly, these strategies of osmotic adjustment, photoprotection, and antioxidant defenses act together in the WD + HI.

Fluoride (F) is considered one of the most phytotoxic pollutants, even when present in low concentrations. When dispersed in the air, F can be transported to about 100 km from the polluting source, reaching plants, animals and humans and causing serious damage. Nevertheless, studies are still scarce on the effect of fluoride in Cerrado species integrating morphological, anatomical and physiological responses. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effect of simulated rainfall containing potassium fluoride (KF) on Hancornia speciosa leaves and roots, to determine its bioaccumulator potential. Young plants at approximately 45 days of emergence were treated daily with simulated KF rain at four concentrations (0, 4, 8 and 12 mg L−1), and four replicates. The experiment was carried out for 40 days, in completely randomized design. After KF exposure, visual, morphological and chlorophyll a fluorescence analyses were performed, alongside fluoride accumulation assessments in roots and shoots. Hancornia speciosa did not present any visual, anatomical and physiological symptoms in response to fluoride; however, it showed an accumulation of phenolic compounds in mesophyll root and leaf cells in all treatments. Physiological characteristic preservation and fluoride accumulation in roots and leaves allow us to suggest that Hancornia speciosa displays tolerance potential at the investigated doses.

Plants are continuously exposed to unfavorable environmental conditions, such as heat stress, which negatively affect plant growth and productivity. There is evidence that phytochromes are involved in plant response to different abiotic stresses. We investigated the possible phytochrome-dependent responses to heat stress in photomorphogenic tomato mutants aurea (au, phytochromobilin-deficient, PΦB) and high-pigment 1 (hp1, hyperresponsive to phytochrome-mediated responses), as well as the wild-type Micro-Tom (MT). In comparison with MT, reductions in photosynthetic rate promoted by a high temperature were more pronounced in au, whereas less pronounced in hp1. All genotypes subjected to the heat stress exhibited adjustments in the capture and dissipation of energy, which were indicated by increases in the initial fluorescence and decreases in the maximum photochemical efficiency of photosystem II (PS II). The effective quantum yield of PS II and the apparent electron transport rate showed greatest alterations in the au mutant. In addition, heat-triggered anatomical changes occurred in all genotypes but were most conspicuous in the au mutant, followed by MT. Thus, phytochrome-dependent mechanisms played pivotal roles in the plant responses to the heat stress, and deficiency in phytochromobilin biosynthesis enhanced the heat-induced impairment of photosynthetic performance.

The production of quality seedlings coupled with the correct choice of fertilizer doses/sources and the container type are essential in the planting of forest species. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship between morphological, physiological and anatomical characteristics and container volume with different fertilizations on Acrocarpus fraxinifolius seeds seedlings. The experiment was conducted in a 2 x 8 factorial scheme (2 volumes of containers and 8 fertilizations), tested in polypropylene tubes of 50 and 110 cm³ and according to different fertilizations: control without fertilization; 4 increasing doses of Osmocote® Plus: 3, 5, 7, 9 kg.per.m³ of substrate, respectively; and 3 split mineral fertilizers with coverings. It was possible to note that the tube with the greatest volume of 110 cm³ presented the best results regarding the morphological characteristics, however, when analyzing the physiological variables it was clear that the 50 cm³ tubes present similar results to those of larger volume when well fertilized. Split fertilization presented better results than slow-release fertilization, and 50 cm³ tubes were more sensitive to fertilization due to the lower volume. Thus, the use of 50 cm³ tubes with fertilization is recommended for producing A. fraxinifolius seedlings, due to presenting physiological quality and economy of inputs in nursery production, transportation and planting.

Fluoride is released in large amounts in the atmosphere by brick, ceramic, phosphate mineral and aluminum industries. It presents the highest phytotoxicity when compared to other air pollutants, damaging different tree species. Byrsonima basiloba Juss. (Malpighiaceae) is a fruit tree widely distributed in anthropic regions, displaying high potential as a bioindicator. In this context, the aim of the present study was to investigate fluoride effects, by means of simulated rainfall, by evaluating morphological and physiological responses of Byrsonima basiloba leaves, in order to assess the bioindicator potential of this species to potassium fluoride (KF). Young plants, approximately 90 days old, were selected through height standardization (∼25 cm) and individually transferred to pots containing 5 L of a substrate composed of washed sand, vermiculite and bioplant® (1:1:1). The plants were submitted to KF exposure daily, by means of simulated rain, at 0, 10, 20 and 30 mg L−1 KF, for 30 days. Byrsonima basiloba revealed the production of reddish pigments on the leaf surface, from the apex to the median region, as well as accumulation of phenolic compounds and reprogramming of plant metabolism. While the pollutant negatively impacted parameters related to photosynthesis and photorespiration, an increase in respiration was observed, probably with the purpose of supplying energy and carbon skeletons to the plants. These results allow for advancements in knowledge regarding plants responses to KF, in addition to demonstrating Byrsonima basiloba potential as a bioindicator regarding this atmospheric pollutant.

Fluoride is one of the main phytotoxic pollutants released into the atmosphere. It can be released in the form of potassium fluoride by brick, ceramic, phosphate mineral and aluminum industries, causing damage to different plant species. Sapindus saponaria L. (Sapindaceae) is widely distributed throughout Brazil, and has been used both in the recovery of degraded areas and in urban afforestation. In this context, the aim of the present study was to determine S. saponaria bioindicator potential through morpho-anatomical and physiological responses after simulated rainfall with potassium fluoride. Young S. saponaria individuals, approximately 50 days old, were treated daily with KF through simulated rain at 0, 10, 20, 30 and 40 mg L−1, for 19 consecutive days. Necrosis and chlorosis in S. saponaria were evidenced at the 4th day of KF application, for all treatments, followed by alterations of parenchyma tissues, cell collapse, accumulation of phenolic compounds and damage to the photochemical and biochemical stages of photosynthesis with increasing KF doses. Visible symptoms associated with non-invasive variables, such as Fv/Fm, ΔF/Fm′, ETR, A and A/Ci, were shown to be important biomarkers of fluoride action. In addition, the evaluated characteristics indicate that S. saponaria is highly sensitive to KF, with high bioindicator potential regarding this pollutant.

Aluminum (Al) exposure effects on Hancornia speciosa Gomes were investigated via culture in a nutrient solution containing 0 (control), 300 and 600 μmol Al L −1 . Seedling emergence, nutrient accumulation, growth and root anatomy were evaluated. Seedling emergence, emergence speed index and root diameter under hydroponic cultivation were significantly reduced in the Al treatments, while Al promoted root growth at the lowest concentration. Al also altered macronutrient translocation in the analyzed plant organs, particularly stem and leaves. This indicates that H. speciosa seeds display sensitivity to Al 3+ , with negative effects on seedling emergence. The presence of Al in the cell walls and chloroplasts and/or the accumulation of phenolic compounds and starch represent a set of mechanisms that may possibly play a role in plant Al detoxification, allowing H. speciosa to survive in the presence of high concentrations of this cation.

Fluorine is found in the atmosphere mainly in the form of hydrofluoric acid, released by industries linked to the production of aluminum, glass and ceramics, in addition to phosphate fertilizers. It is an element of high toxicity, quite harmful to plant growth. Eugenia dysenterica (Mart.) DC. (Myrtaceae) species is a fruit tree native to the Brazilian Cerrado with wide distribution in anthropic regions. Thus, the objective of this work was to investigate the potential of E. dysenterica for fluoride bioindication through the characterization of the effects of KF (potassium fluoride), in simulated rain. The damage caused by KF toxicity were analyzed through morpho-anatomical and physiological alterations in the leaves. Young plants with approximately 40 days-old and standardized height (∼14 cm) were transferred to 5 L individual pots containing substrate composed of washed sand, vermiculite and bioplant (1:1:1). The plants were submitted to KF daily, in simulated rain, at concentrations of 0, 10, 20 and 30 mg L −1 of KF, for a period of 27 days. The experimental design was completely randomized, composed by 1 plant per pot with 4 replicates, i.e., 4 plants per treatment. After the KF exposure period, the E. dysenterica leaves were evaluated visually and physiologically and leaf fragments were collected for anatomical analysis. E. dysenterica presented necrosis formation on the adaxial side, from the border to the center, and tissue degradation with formation of cellular plasmolysis and elongation, intensified with increasing KF dose. Chlorophyll content and photochemical parameters, obtained through chlorophyll a fluorescence, indicated severe damage in photosystem II with increased KF doses. The results showed that exposure of E. dysenterica to fluoride allows to characterize the species as a potential bioindicator of reaction to the pollutant and to be used in environmental biomonitoring programs.

Common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) cultivation occurs mainly in regions with acidic soils, where high aluminum (Al) concentration is a major constraint to crop production. In this study, we evaluated tolerance and sensitivity traits to Al exposure and calcium (Ca) deficiency in bean plants, and determined the efficiency of Ca to mitigate the toxic Al effects. Two bean cultivars (BRS Estilo and Campos Gerais) were grown in three soil conditions: (I) soil liming with calcium hydroxide Ca(OH)2 and Al unavailable (-Al+Ca); (II) fertilized soil with calcium nitrate [Ca(NO3)2·4H2O] and Al available (+Al+Ca); and (III) soil without Ca addition and Al available (+Al-Ca). At the beginning of the reproductive stage, we evaluated the photosynthetic processes, mineral nutrition, and leaf anatomy and morphological traits of plants. The photosynthetic parameters were good tools for monitor Al sensitivity in bean. +Al+Ca soil treatment mitigated the deleterious effects of Al on growth and mineral nutrition of both bean cultivars. However, Ca did not prevent the toxic effects of Al on leaf anatomy. Al stress and Ca deficiency caused negative effects on nutrient content, photosynthetic activity and leaf anatomy of bean plants. Calcium mitigated Al toxicity, primarily in the Campos Gerais cultivar, showing the potential to improve bean crop productivity in acid soils.

Rapid growth in the oil industry has been accompanied concomitant increases in risks of spills or leaks triggered by natural or anthropogenic causes that cause soil changes and plant damage. Bio-scavenging and phytoremediation plants are important tools for identifying pollutants and mitigating environmental damage. The objective of this study was to evaluate the phytoremediation potential of Ricinus communis cultivated in soils contaminated with mineral oil, and to determine the possible visual, anatomical and physiological effects. R. communis seeds were pre-germinated in individual pots containing Red Latosol contaminated with Lubrax Essential SL (15W-40) mineral oil at concentrations of 0 (control), 5, 10, and 15 g kg−1. After exposure to treatments, emergency evaluations were performed, and after 45 days of cultivation, visual, morphoanatomical, physiological and oil removal effects were evaluated. There was no difference in emergence showed between treatments. Visual effects were characterized by necrosis and chlorosis formation in R. communis, evidenced on the 45th day of cultivation in all treatments tested, followed by parenchymal tissue alterations with collapsed cell formation and damage to photosynthesis with increasing doses. We found that R. communis removed up to 81% of hydrocarbons in soils, classifying it as potential phytoremediator of contaminated soils. The strong correlation between the variables suggests that R. communis can be used as an indicator of pollutant action.

Native Cerrado plants are exposed to soils with low pH and high availability of Al. In this study, we measured the Al content in adult plants, and investigated the effects of various Al doses on germination and early development of Eugenia dysenterica plants. For germination tests, the seeds were soaked in Al solution and evaluated for twenty days in growth chambers. In a second experiment, young plants were cultivated in hydroponic systems with various Al concentrations to evaluate the morphological, anatomical and physiological characteristics of E. dysenterica. Anatomical changes and low germinative vigor were observed in seeds germinated in 600 and 800 μmol Al3+ L−1. In the hydroponic system, 200 μmol Al3+ L−1 stimulated root growth in young plants. The activity of antioxidant enzymes and the accumulation of phenolic compounds were greatest at the highest Al doses, preventing changes in gas exchange and chlorophyll a fluorescence. Starch grain accumulation was noted in plant cells exposed to 200 and 400 μmol Al3+ L−1. Adult E. dysenterica trees also accumulated Al in leaves, bark and seeds. These data suggest that E. dysenterica is tolerant to Al.

The maturing of drift used in the culture of sugar cane can have harmful effects on other crops grown in the vicinity of sugar cane plantations. Among these, sunflower grown in the off-season can have its growth and productivity affected by drift. The objective of this research was to evaluate whether the drift of trinexapac-ethyl and glyphosate promotes changes in the photosynthetic metabolism of sunflower plants. Two trials were carried out to evaluate the effects of these products on gas exchange, chlorophyll fluorescence, chloroplastid pigments, membrane permeability, sugar content, as well as shikimic acid and malondialdehyde concentration in the treated plants. In the first experiment, we tested glyphosate in doses of 0 (control); 3.6; 7.2; 14.4; 28.8; and 86.4 g a.e.∙ha−1 and in the second, trinexapac-ethyl at doses of 0 (control) 3.12; 6.25; 12.50; 25, and 75 g a.i.∙ha−1. The growth regulator trinexapac-ethyl did not change the photosynthetic metabolism of plants. However, glyphosate caused damage to the photosynthetic apparatus and a reduction in the carbohydrate concentration and chloroplastid pigments, with casual damage to cell membranes; these effect were more intense at increased doses. The effects of glyphosate were evidenced by the increased concentration of shikimic acid, derived from its mechanism of action. Concludes that, the photosynthetic metabolism of sunflower plants is not affected by the growth regulator trinexapac-ethyl, unlike to the evident effects after application of glyphosate.

This study aimed to evaluate the growth of two species and one eucalyptus hybrid irrigated with different wastewaters. The experiment was carried out in a greenhouse in a completely randomized split-plot experimental design with three replications. The effluent included: Urban source, beef cattle slaughterhouse, poultry/swine slaughterhouse and soy processing/dairy plant from the wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). In the subplot, the wastewater was diluted to the concentrations of 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100%. In the subplot, two species (Eucalyptus citriodora and Eucalyptus urophylla) and a eucalyptus hybrid (Eucalyptus urophylla x Eucalyptus grandis) were tested. The following physiological attributes were evaluated: mortality, root area, leaf area, stem diameter, plant height, green matter mass and dry matter weight. The results showed that the water from the beef cattle slaughterhouse WWTP, at 50% concentration, impaired growth of genotypes and promoted higher mortality values. As the concentrations of the four wastewater types increased, there was a significant variation for all characteristics except for: leaf area, plant height and dry matter weight with the soy processing/dairy WWTP water. The tested waters might be used in seedling irrigation of the two Eucalyptus plant species and the hybrid. Key words: Sewage sludge, water reuse, seedling production.

This study aimed to evaluate the morphological and anatomical changes of Salvinia auriculata exposed to different concentrations 0, 2.5, 5, 7.5 and 10 μM of cadmium (Cd) and its effect on plant growth. The experiment was conducted in the laboratory of Plant Anatomy of the IF Goiano/Rio Verde Campus, Goias. Cd free samples of S. auriculata , was obtained from the Aquarios Plantados company, located in Belo Horizonte. The material was grown hydroponically for 20 days and after the experimental period, the leaf samples were fixed, including in historesin, cut to 5 μm thick thick, stained with toluidine blue and the images were obtained in an optical microscope. The toxic effects of Cd on S. auriculata was observed at lowest concentration with the appearance of chlorotic and necrotic spots. Microscopic analysis showed increased height and width of the aerenchyma gaps, mesophyll and a reduction in abaxial surface epidermal cells, due to increased doses of this metal. It was observed that S. auriculata is a plant sensitive to Cd, and thus indicated for environmental monitoring. Key words : Ecological, aquatic species, pollution.

Ecological contamination by air pollutants is a worldwide problem. Fluoride-based compounds are released in large proportions into the atmosphere, soil and water from various industrial sources. These compounds are more phytotoxic to various plants than are other pollutants. The objective of this work was to determine the effects of fluoride in the form of potassium fluoride (KF)-simulated rain, on morphological and physiological responses, macronutrient content and fluoride accumulation in Spondias mombin leaves. S. mombin seedlings were transplanted to 5-liter pots containing Bioplant® substrate in a greenhouse. After acclimatization, the plants were subjected to KF, through simulated rain, at concentrations of 0, 10, 20 and 30 mg L−1, for a period of 9 days. Subsequently, visual and anatomical evaluations, chlorophyll a fluorescence variables, gas exchange, fluoride accumulation and macronutrient content were performed in all plants. KF-treated S. mombin developed necrosis on leaf surfaces with damage of up to 70%, followed by parenchymal tissue alterations characterized by cellular collapse and accumulation of phenolic compounds. We observed photochemical and macronutrient content changes that may compromise development of these plants. The correlation between the analyses suggested that noninvasive characteristics are important tools for detecting environmental pollution, and that S. mombin is an important bioindicator of KF-contaminated environments.

Thermal stress reduces plant growth and development, resulting in considerable economic losses in crops such as soybeans. Nitric oxide (NO) in plants is associated with tolerance to various abiotic stresses. Nevertheless, there are few studies of the range of observed effects of NO in modulating physiological and metabolic functions in soybean plants under high temperature. In the present study, we investigated the effects of sodium nitroprusside (SNP, NO donor), on anatomical, physiological, biochemical, and metabolic processes of soybean plants exposed to high temperature. Soybean plants were grown in soil: sand (2:1) substrate in acclimatized growth chambers. At developmental V3 stage, plants were exposed to two temperatures (25 °C and 40 °C) and SNP (0 and 100 μM), in a randomized block experimental design, with five replicates. After six days, we quantified NO concentration, leaf anatomy, gas exchange, chlorophyll a fluorescence, photosynthetic pigments, lipid peroxidation, antioxidant enzyme activity, and metabolite profiles. Higher NO concentration in soybean plants exposed to high temperature and SNP showed increased effective quantum yields of photosystem II (PSII) and photochemical dissipation, thereby maintaining the photosynthetic rate. Under high temperature, NO also promoted greater activity of ascorbate peroxidase and peroxidase activity, avoiding lipid peroxidation of cell membranes, in addition to regulating amino acid and organic compound levels. These results suggest that NO prevented damage caused by high temperature in soybean plants, illustrating the potential to mitigate thermal stress in cultivated plants.

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of aluminum (Al) on root growth and root anatomical structure of Stenocalyx dysentericus seedlings. Newly emerged plants were grown in simple solution composed of 0.1 µM of CaCl2.2H2O and five Al concentrations of 0, 150, 300, 600, and 1200 μM for 37 days in a hydroponic system. Subsequently, the seedlings were evaluated for root growth, relative root elongation, and anatomical studies using bright-field and fluorescence microscopy techniques. The results showed tolerance by S. dysentericus, with more root relative elongation in treatments with 150, 300, and 600 μM of Al. The anatomical studies revealed the presence of Al in root tissue, through the morin reagent, mainly in the 1200 μM treatment, characterizing some internal detoxification mechanism. S. dysentericus demonstrated tolerance in the tests with Al, principally at lower doses. These results may be entirely linked to its wide distribution in the cerrado domain, demonstrating to be a species adapted to soils with higher Al concentration. S. dysentericus, when subjected to treatment with Al, showed a stimulating effect on root growth; for this species, low concentrations of Al may be essential for better root growth. Poultry waste recycling is now a globally practice consolidated in agriculture. However, the proper disposal of poultry waste should enable to reduce N losses and to decrease pollution potential from the high concentrations of poultry litter applied to soil. In this context, the aim of the present study was to evaluate poultry litter doses and the effect of an urease inhibitor on the chemical attributes of a dystrophic Red Latosol. Two experiments were carried out, one in a greenhouse and another in a eucalyptus forest area, both applying completely randomized design with a 2 × 6 + 1 factorial arrangement, applying two types and six doses of poultry litter (5, 10, 20, 40, 80 and 160 t ha-1) plus the controls, with four replicates, total of 52 pots. The application of poultry litter doses altered soil chemical attributes, except for potential acidity. Soil pH, cation exchange capacity (CEC), sum of bases (SB) and electric conductivity (EC) values and Ca, Mg, K, P, S, organic matter (OM), Mn, Zn and Cu levels increased with increasing poultry litter doses, while Fe and B contents decreased. The 40, 80 and 160 t ha-1 poultry litter doses led to contamination potential of the soil due to salinity and alkalinity, and also raised the EC of the percolate at levels limiting to plants. The NBPT (N-butyl thiophosphoric triamide) urease inhibitor exhibited no influence on soil chemical attributes.

The generation of waste has gradually increased due to the large swine production and with this comes the concern about the final destination of the product . This study aimed to analyze the initial behavior of Eucalyptus s uper c lone (AEC 1528) , fertilized with swine sludge and compared to chemical fertilizer . The experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design with 5 treatments and 3 replications, with the volumes: 1.25, 2.5, 5 liters; 0 liters of sewage sludge and chemical fertilizer. The plants were i rrigated with water from a well at the Rio Verde University , increasing the amount according to plant growth . After 120 days , we evaluated the height of the plants , stem diameter , relation between stem diameter and plants height, weight of the fresh matter , weight of the dry matter, root weight , leaf area and mortality . There were significant differences in relation to plant height , the fresh matter weight and the dry matter weight . For the other characteristics there was no negative influence with the use of different volumes of sewage sludge in eucalypts hybrid. It was observed that , the application of biosolids (sludge from swine ) is an effective alternative fertilizer in eucalyptus plantations .

Vernonia ferruginea Less. is a perennial shrub species, present in several regions of Brazil, especially in the savanna. It is popularly used as a phytotherapic. This fact justifies the need to anatomically characterize the plant for its accurate identification and to conduct histochemical studies with the aim of identifying the chemical nature of its cellular constituents. The species-specific data will contribute significantly to pharmaceutical quality control and also provide information about the sites of specific chemical compounds. Samples of V. ferruginea vegetative organs were collected and submitted to the usual plant anatomy and histochemical techniques. The leaves are anfihipoestomatica with anomocytic stomata; have tector and glandular trichomes that store essential oils. The stem has collateral-type vascular bundles arranged in a eustele structure; it also has glandular and tector trichomes. The root has brachysclereids, endoderm with various chemical compounds and vascular bundles having axial elements and rays. Few differences were found in the structure of vegetative organs in relation to other species of the genus, confirming the importance of the details shown.
