The correction of functional posterior crossbite through Planas Direct Tracks has many characteristics that can become advantages. The aim of this study was to present a clinical case showing how to use this procedure for early correction with resources available through public health services. The patient, a 4-year-old girl, arrived to receive treatment due to a functional unilateral crossbite. When the mandible was moved to the centric position, it was observed that the teeth had occlusal trauma. An occlusal adjustment was performed. The adjustment was not sufficient to promote functional equilibrium; thus, Planas Direct Tracks were made, resulting in functional equilibrium and correction of the malocclusion. As shown in the case report, the Planas Direct Tracks were effective for the correction of the posterior crossbite. If malocclusion is considered a public health problem, implementation of low-cost and easy-to-execute techniques is needed.

ABSTRACT Objective: To evaluate the prevalence and severity of malocclusion and its impact on oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) and self-reported satisfaction of patients with anorexia and bulimia nervosa. Methods: The sample consisted of sixty women who attended a specialized mental health clinic of a Brazilian medical school. Participants were distributed into two groups: patients with anorexia and bulimia nervosa (ABN; n=30) and control patients without eating disorders (CN; n=30). The dental occlusion was evaluated by the Dental Aesthetic Index; the OHRQoL was assessed using the OHIP-14 questionnaire; and the self-reported satisfaction with the appearance of teeth, speech ability and chewing was obtained by interviews. Results: Severe and very severe malocclusion were observed in 26.67% and 46.67% of patients in the ABN group, respectively, while the CN group showed 80.00% of patients without abnormality/mild malocclusion. ABN group showed a higher proportion of patients (p < 0.05) with tooth loss, spacing in the region of incisors, maxillary misalignment, and mandibular misalignment in relation to CN group. ABN group presented lower (p< 0.05) OHRQoL and self-reported satisfaction with the appearance of teeth, speech ability and chewing, compared to the CN group. There was a significant positive correlation (p< 0.05) between the Dental Aesthetic Index and OHIP-14 scores in the ABN group. Conclusions: The prevalence of severe malocclusion in ABN group was high, with a negative impact on OHRQoL and self-reported satisfaction with the chewing ability, speech ability and appearance of teeth.

Introduction: The term stigma was coined by the ancient Greeks to refer to signs made in the body meaning something bad on the morale of those who had them. Objective: To verify the presence of discriminatory attitudes of users of Unified Health System regarding HIV-positive individuals, as well as the perception about the possibility of acquiring some kind of disease during dental treatment. Methods: The data collection instrument consists of a semi-structured questionnaire. This study included interviews asking the following questions: individuals agree to be treated by a HIV-positive dentist, after the treatment of a HIV-positive patient or an inmate; the perception of the possibility of acquiring illnesses in a dental office; concern regarding sterilization of materials used and the manner of sterilization. Results: Two hundred individuals were interviewed, 142 would accept to be treated after a HIV-positive patient and 160 after an inmate. Moreover, 162 would be available for treatment by a HIV-positive dentist. However, when questioned about the preference, 93 would prefer to be treated before a HIV-positive patient and 60 before an inmate. Conclusion: Patients showed discriminatory attitudes toward seropositive people, expressed sometimes in a veiled manner, and the perception about the possibility of getting some kind of infection during dental treatment.

Resumo Introdução A deficiência visual acomete aproximadamente 285 milhões de pessoas, em todo o mundo. A prestação de cuidados com a saúde bucal à pessoa com deficiência visual difere dos demais tendo em vista as suas limitações inerentes, as quais podem afetar o atendimento odontológico desses indivíduos. Objetivo Avaliar o acesso das pessoas com deficiência visual aos serviços de saúde bucal e a satisfação delas com o atendimento, além de verificar se há alguma relação com a condição econômica. Método Trata-se de uma pesquisa quantitativa de caráter transversal, sendo a população de estudo formada por pessoas com deficiência visual de um instituto para cegos. Foi utilizado um questionário semiestruturado sobre o tema, cujas variáveis pesquisadas foram: acesso aos serviços de saúde bucal, satisfação e condição socioeconômica. Após a coleta, os dados foram tabulados pelo Epi Info 7.2. Resultados Do total de pesquisados (n=72), 65,28% são do sexo masculino, com idade média de 34,6 anos. Em relação ao acesso aos serviços de saúde bucal, 56,9% dos entrevistados relataram que a última visita ao dentista fazia menos de um ano e a maioria (84,3%) classificou o tratamento da última consulta como bom ou muito bom. O acesso aos serviços de saúde ocorreu tanto no sistema público quanto no privado, independentemente da classe econômica do pesquisado (p=0,174). Conclusão Apesar dos resultados positivos em relação ao acesso e ao atendimento odontológico às pessoas com deficiência visual, se fazem necessárias a criação e a ampliação de políticas de inclusão e de acessibilidade.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Orthodontic treatment aims at oral health and restoration of function as main objectives, however, psychological and social effects end up being the main reason for the demand for treatment. Objective: To determine the association between the oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL), the need for orthodontic treatment and bullying among Brazilian teenagers. Methods: This was a cross-sectional epidemiological study. To assess the malocclusion, the Dental Aesthetic Index was used. And the Oral Health Impact Profile-14 was used to analyze the OHRQoL. The Kidscape questionnaire was used to investigate cases of bullying. The following variables were also included: previous orthodontic treatment and a desire to fix the teeth to improve one’s appearance. Multivariate analysis was performed using logistic regression considering the poor OHRQoL as a response variable. Results: 815 teenagers participated in the study. There was a statistically significant association between oral health-related quality of life and the variables: previous orthodontic treatment (p= 0.0270), desire to fix the teeth (p< 0.0001), sex (p= 0.0309), history of being a victim of bullying (p< 0.0001), frequency of bullying episodes (p= 0.0170), and consequences of bullying (p< 0.0001). The following were considered as risk factors for poor OHRQoL: lack of previous orthodontic treatment (OR = 2.191) and negative consequences of bullying (OR = 3.042). Conclusion: The need for orthodontic treatment was not associated with the OHRQoL; however, bullying and previous orthodontic treatment had a statistically significant association with this variable.

Objetivo: investigar a imunização contra hepatite B em auxiliares em saúde bucal (ASBs) do Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS) de nove cidades do estado de São Paulo, Brasil, em 2018. Métodos: estudo transversal, baseado em entrevista com questionário e avaliação de imunidade pelo teste anti-HBs, realização prévia do teste, seu resultado e interpretação, e orientações recebidas sobre a doença. Resultados: dos 70 ASBs registrados, 35 completaram o esquema vacinal, 29 apresentaram resultado negativo ao teste anti-HBs, 16 realizaram previamente o teste e 43 não compreendiam corretamente seu resultado; houve associação (p=0,025) entre esquema vacinal completo e recebimento de orientações. Conclusão: a maioria dos ASBs recebeu orientações sobre a doença; entretanto, uma parcela considerável não completou o esquema vacinal e apresentou resultado negativo para o teste anti-HBs; poucos realizaram o teste anteriormente e interpretaram corretamente o resultado; evidencia-se cenário alarmante, com deficiência na imunização contra hepatite B entre ASBs.

ABSTRACT Hepatitis B is a severe public health problem. The main world health centers have discussed it due to its pandemic proportion, high pathogenicity and infectivity. This study aimed to determine the immunization profile of dental surgeons - against hepatitis B virus (HBV) in the Public Health System (PHS) through the detection of anti-HBsAg antibodies by immunochromatography and associations with dental surgeons’ social and educational profile, factors related to professional knowledge and practices. This is a cross-sectional study on the prevalence of vaccination and immune status to HBV in dentists of Sao Paulo State PHS. Data collection occurred in three stages: questionnaire application, analysis of adhesion to the vaccination protocol and anti-HBsAg tests. Statistical analysis used the Bivariate Analysis and the Binary Logistic Regression. From the total of 219 interviewees, 74.9% reported having received three doses of the vaccine, but 35.6% were not immune to HBV. The dependent variable was associated with years in the public service (years) (OR [Odds Ratio]=1.04; 95% CI 1.00-1.08); knowledge on the subject (OR=6.93; 95% CI 1.39-34.40); incorrect answer concerning the etiological agent of the disease (OR=2.60; 95% CI 1.30-5.22); ignorance on the number of vaccine doses that have been administered (OR=3.43; 95% CI 1.14-10.30); and less than three doses of the vaccine in the immunization schedule (OR=8.76; 95% CI 3.50-21.91). A considerable portion of professionals non-immune to the HBV were found. We concluded that knowledge, years of practice and completion of the vaccination schedule (three doses) affected dental surgeons’ immune status to HBV.

Objective: The objective was to analyze the satisfaction with the academic experience among graduates of the Biological Sciences and Health area of a Brazilian public university (n=30), Pharmacy (n=45), Physical Education (n=44), Nursing (n=30), Medicine (n=39) and Dentistry (n=35), resulting in a sample of 223 academics. Methods: The data were collected through the validated instrument - 'Satisfaction Scale with Academic Experience', composed of 35 indicators and three dimensions: 'course satisfaction', 'development opportunity' and 'institution satisfaction', measured by the Five point likert scale. Descriptive statistics and Anova, Kruskal-Wallis and t-tests were applied. Results: The 'course satisfaction' dimension was the best evaluated (p0.05). Conclusion: It is concluded that the investigated students are satisfied with the institution of higher education; However, strategies should still be established to qualify their educational process, especially institutional infrastructure.

A violência infantil é considerada uma das causas mais importantes para a morbimortalidade na infância. Este problema deve ser identificado por qualquer profissional que esteja em contato direto com a criança no seu cotidiano, em especial professores de educação infantil. Este estudo transversal objetivou verificar o conhecimento de professores de Escolas Municipais de Ensino Básico (EMEBS) do município de Araçatuba, São Paulo, sobre violência intrafamiliar contra crianças. O instrumento de análise utilizado foi um questionário semiestruturado e, previamente, testado. O universo amostral deste estudo foi composto por 84 professores, pertencentes a 10 EMEBS. Os resultados foram analisados no programa Excel e mostraram que a maioria dos participantes definiu violência contra criança como violência física e psicológica (52,4%). Ao serem questionados quanto ao preparo para identificar abusos, 67,9% disseram ter obtido informações a respeito de violência contra a criança durante sua formação acadêmica, todavia apenas 19% dos participantes se sentiam totalmente capazes de identificar abusos em menores. 20,2% da amostra mencionaram ainda não se sentir responsável por esse tipo de notificação. Logo, o conhecimento das equipes pedagógicas do ensino infantil sobre violência contra criança ainda é bastante deficitário. São sugeridas medidas que estimulem a busca pelo conhecimento e atualização destes profissionais.

Objectives: To investigate the prevalence of work-related musculoskeletal disorders amongst dentists who work in public clinics in São Paulo, Brazil, to investigate their awareness of the presence of risk factors in the workplace, disability due to pain, and the influence of pain on this awareness and disability. Material and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 204 dentists who work in public health clinics in the northwest of São Paulo, Brazil. The data was collected through interviews, using the Nordic Questionnaire and the Work-Related Activities that May Contribute to Job-Related Pain Questionnaire. In the case of workers who reported pain, the Pain Disability Questionnaire (PDQ) and the Numeric Pain Scale were also administered. Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS 21.0. Results: Most dentists (81.4%) had musculoskeletal disorders, especially in the neck, shoulders and lower back. We found that the presence of symptoms in the neck (15.7%), shoulders (12.7%) and lower back (15.7%) were the major causes of absenteeism over the past 12 months. Occupational risk factors perceived as the most problematic ones were: bending or twisting the back in an awkward way, continuing to work when injured or hurt and working in the same position for long periods. Comparison between the symptomatic and asymptomatic dentists showed a statistically significant difference (p < 0.05) in the perception of occupational risk factors. The analysis of the intensity of pain and disability with PDQ in the symptomatic dentists showed an average pain intensity of 3.8. Mean scores of the PDQ total (11.46) and its dimensions – functional condition (7.1) and psychosocial condition (4.4) – suggest a moderate disability in the dental surgeons. There was a strong t correlation (r = 0.697) between pain intensity and the total score of disability caused by pain. Conclusions: Pain and work-related musculoskeletal disorders interfere significantly with the dentists’ lives. ABSTRACT BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Musculoskeletal disorders represents one of the major public health problems among workers and the general population, and it is multifactorial in origin. It has attracted the attention of researchers concerned with issues relating to health and work, due to cost and its impact on the quality of life. It causes functional impairment, limitations in activities, decreased quality of life, disability, reduced work productivity and direct medical costs. To measure the prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders and the association between the musculoskeletal disorders and pain disability in dentists in São Paulo, Brazil. METHODS: A cross sectional study was conducted with 91dentists in the northwest of São Paulo, Brazil. Data were collected through interviews, using the Nordic Questionnaire, The Pain Disability Questionnaire and the Numeric Pain Scale were also administered to workers who reported pain. Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS 21.0. RESULTS: Most dentists (90.4%) had musculoskeletal disorders, especially in the neck, upper and lower back. The analysis of the intensity of pain and disability with Pain Disability Questionnaire in symptomatic dentists showed an average pain intensity of 1.96, its intensity was classified as moderate. Mean scores of the Pain Disability Questionnaire total (7.91) and its dimensions - functional condition (5.29) and psychosocial condition (2.61) - suggest moderate disability in Brazilian dentists. There was moderate t correlation (r = 0.409) between pain intensity and the total score of disability caused by pain. CONCLUSION: Pain and work-related musculoskeletal disorders interfere significantly in dentists' lives. There is significant correlation between pain intensity and disability caused by pain in dental surgeons.

Este trabalho objetivou relatar a experiência na execução do projeto “Identificação de violência contra crianças nas escolas municipais de ensino básico de Araçatuba-SP”, que oferece capacitação e treinamento aos alunos de graduação e pós-graduação para o desenvolvimento da detecção, notificação e condução dos casos de violência encontrados na comunidade, beneficiando ainda as equipes pedagógicas das escolas e os pais e/ ou responsáveis pelas crianças. O projeto atende aproximadamente 1500 crianças de 0 a 6 anos de idade em 15 instituições. Os casos de violência detectados são descritos em fichas, que são repassadas à direção da escola, que aciona o Conselho Tutelar. Até o momento, as notificações são, em grande parte, relacionadas à negligência dos pais no cuidado das crianças. Em menor proporção, é possível observar crianças com dificuldade de relacionamento.Paestras e rodas de discussão são promovidas a toda equipe pedagógica e aos pais dos alunos, a fim de sensibilizar todos os atores sociais sobre a temática da violência. Desta forma, as atividades no combate à violência fomentam maior interação da universidade com a comunidade, transformando os reais anseios da população e aproximando os discentes da prática, além de auxiliar na identificação de abusos e proteger as crianças da violência.

Abstract INTRODUCTION: This paper analyzed sociodemographic and epidemiological data of individuals with syphilis as well as the compulsory reporting of the disease, for being a reemerging disease in Brazil. METHODS: General information and sociodemographic, epidemiological, clinical, and laboratory data were verified in compulsory reporting. RESULTS: From 2010 to 2016, 157 reporting forms were explored. Acquired and gestational syphilis occurred predominantly in those 20 to 29 years of age and those who did not complete secondary education. Compulsory reporting forms were not complete. CONCLUSIONS: The number of syphilis cases has varied over the years in the city. Incomplete compulsory reporting was noted.

Justificativa e Objetivos: Os fatores individuais, relativos ao trabalho e organizacionais podem favorecer a adesão de práticas seguras no ambiente laboral, prevenindo a ocorrência de exposições a material biológico entre profissionais da área da saúde. Baseado nisso, objetivou-se verificar a influência de fatores individuais, relativos ao trabalho e organizacionais na adesão às precauções padrão. Métodos: Trata-se de um estudo transversal, de caráter censitário, com abordagem quantitativa, realizado com 79 profissionais da área odontológica (cirurgiões-dentistas e auxiliares em saúde bucal), alocados no sistema público de saúde de um município do interior paulista. Para coleta dos dados, os participantes responderam ao modelo explicativo da adesão às precauções padrão. Trata-se de um questionário validado, constituído por variáveis demográficas e escalas psicométricas, onde a associação destes fatores com a adesão às precauções padrão foi obtida por meio da análise de regressão logística múltipla. Resultados: A análise estatística revelou que a idade do profissional, o tempo de atuação na profissão e de trabalho na unidade; a forma como tomou conhecimento das precauções padrão, a personalidade de risco, a eficácia da prevenção, os obstáculos para seguir as precauções padrão, o treinamento e disponibilidade do equipamento de proteção individual; as ações gerenciais de apoio a segurança do trabalhador, o feedback das práticas seguras e conhecimento da transmissão ocupacional do HIV; além da carga de trabalho, influenciaram positivamente na adesão às precauções padrão entre os profissionais integrantes do estudo. Conclusão: Conclui-se que a adesão às precauções padrão é influenciada, simultaneamente, por fatores individuais, relativos ao trabalho e organizacionais.

Background and objectives: Assessing health-related quality of life is an important aspect of clinical practice. Thus, the present study attempts to assess the health-related quality of life of patients with chronic liver disease. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted on 133 chronic liver disease patients, using three instruments: a demographic questionnaire, the Chronic Liver Disease Questionnaire, and Model for End-Stage Liver Disease index. O Projeto Amazonas é uma ação cívico-social, sem fins lucrativos e concebido por meio da iniciativa voluntária de profissionais liberais. Neste projeto, são realizadas missões humanitárias no âmbito médico, odontológico, preventivo e social junto à povos indígenas da Região Amazônica. Frente a isso, O objetivo desse presente trabalho é de relatar a experiência da participação de cirurgiões-dentistas nesse projeto, com apresentação acerca da condição de saúde bucal desses povos que se contrapõe à um cenário hipnótico de beleza natural. São Gabriel da Cachoeira, situado no estado do Amazonas, é o município com a maior população indígena no país. E em decorrência da globalização, do contato com o Exército Brasileiro bastante presente na região e da aproximação com povos de outras culturas, a população indígena tem sofrido mudanças em suas características, costumes e hábitos e doenças sistêmicas e bucais tem ocorrido com grande frequência. Assistência à saúde dos grupos indígenas sempre foi desorganizada e negligenciada pelas autoridades, sendo que faltam profissionais da área da saúde, o que resulta nos altos índices de cárie dentária observados nessa população. No Projeto Amazonas realizado em 2013, participaram da equipe 8 cirurgiões-dentistas, que realizaram 1405 procedimentos de urgência, que incluia exodontias (739), prescrições de medicamentos (660) e curativos endodônticos (6). Foram realizados 679 procedimentos restauradores, sendo representados pelo tratamento restaurador atraumático – ART – (570) e as restaurações com resina composta (109). Além disso, foram realizados procedimentos preventivos (72). Concomitante, foram realizadas ações de educação em saúde bucal com todas as crianças das comunidades e escovação supervisionada. Esses dados devem chamar atenção da população brasileira e dos governantes para que medidas sejam tomadas, afim de que haja a congruência da exuberância do cenário natural encontrado na região com a saúde da população que o habita.

INTRODUCTION: To analyze the knowledge, feelings and perceptions involving patients affected by leprosy, as a better understanding of these factors may be useful to decrease the stigma and prejudice associated with the condition. METHODS: The study cohort consisted of 94 patients who underwent treatment for leprosy at the Health Units in the City of Cuiabá, Mato Grosso (MT), Brazil. The study questionnaire included items to collect information on socio-demographic data, knowledge about the disease, stigma, prejudice, self-esteem and quality of life of leprosy patients. Bivariate analyses were used to assess the data based on the chi-square test with a 5% significance threshold. RESULTS: The results revealed that the study population consisted predominantly of males (55.3%) with an income between 1 and 3 times the minimum wage (67%). The survey respondents reported that the most significant difficulties related to the treatment were the side effects (44.7%) and the duration of the treatment (28.7%). A total of 72.3% of the subjects were knowledgeable about the disease, of whom 26.6% had the leprosy reaction. Stigma and prejudice were cited by 93.6% of the participants. Based on the responses, 40.4% of patients reported being depressed and sad, and 69.1% of the subjects encountered problems at work after being diagnosed. A total of 45.7% of the patients rated their quality of life between bad and very bad. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that leprosy causes suffering in patients beyond pain and discomfort and greatly influences social participation.

Musculoskeletal pain is commonly reported in dentists and can start from their training period and continue throughout their practice if preventive or corrective measures are not implemented. To evaluate the perception of dental students in relation to the risk factors that may contribute to the musculoskeletal pain, and verify how the existence of painful symptoms influences the perception of risk factors. This cross-sectional study was conducted among 241 dental students at public university of São Paulo, Brazil in 2016. The data were collected through interviews, using the Standardized Nordic Questionnaire for Musculoskeletal Symptom and the Work-Related Activities that May Contribute to Job-Related Pain Questionnaire. Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS 21.0. Painful symptoms were observed in 199 participants (83.0%). Most students had their perception classified as minimal to moderate (86.3%). A statistically significant association (P=0.005) was found when the test of association between the perception of risk factors and the presence of painful symptoms was performed. The highest averages were found in the issues related to repetition of movement, followed by work-related factors and finally the risks to external factors. There are statistically significant differences in the average perception when comparing the group with and without pain for each question of the instrument when comparing the body areas. Undergraduate students are aware of the factors that contribute to health issues and development of musculoskeletal pain, and in particular, there is a greater perception among those who may have had any symptoms.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is transmitted mainly by parenteral route, although, some studies have pointed the potential of transmission by sharing infected instruments, like toothbrushes. The aim of this study was to investigate the knowledge about viral transmission among HCV infected individuals and attitudes regarding toothbrush care. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 112 HCV-infected individuals from Uberlandia City, Minas Gerais State (Southeast Brazil). Data were collected through a questionnaire containing demographic data and other questions (correct responses were given one point, incorrect and uncertain responses were given zero point) about knowledge of HCV transmission (6 items in total; scores lower than 4 points indicated poor knowledge level and scores equal or higher than 4 indicated good knowledge level); attitudes regarding toothbrush care (7 items; scores 0 to 3 indicated inadequate attitudes, and scores higher than 3 indicated adequate attitudes). The statistical analysis included Chi-square test, Exact Fisher's test and Maximum Likelihood Estimation (p < 0.05 was considered significant). Out of the 112 questionnaires distributed, 85 (response rate: 75.9%) were included. Most individuals were male (60%), Caucasian (69.4%), aged more than 51 years (51.7%), had attended pre-school (35.1%), and had incomes up to $525.2 per month (49.4%). Fifty four percent of individuals showed good Knowledge level of HCV transmission; 43.5% did not identify HCV transmission through toothbrushes and 80% did not believe in HCV transmission by saliva. A significant association were observed between Knowledge level of HCV and age (p= 0.020); and education level (p= 0.000). Forty-five HCV-infected individuals (64.70%) had adequate attitudes regarding toothbrushes care. Significant associations were observed between toothbrush care level and: age (p= 0.005); education level (p= 0.000); and family income (p= 0.038). HCV-infected individuals showed good knowledge level about main aspects of HCV infection and adequate attitudes regarding toothbrush care.

Objective: To determine the prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders in dentists who attend postgraduate courses in various specialties and establish possible relationships with sociodemographic and occupational factors. Methodology: This is a cross-sectional study where 91 professionals responded to validated instruments: “Work-related activities that may contribute to job-related pain and / or injury” and NMQ “Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire”, and variables were also collected regarding sociodemographic and occupational characteristics. Results: WMSDs were often reported in the neck, shoulder, lower/upper back, and hand/wrists. Logistic regression analysis revealed that there was a correlation between reports of WMSD in lower back and work related (OR=13.40). Moreover, associations were found between WMSDs and the occupational factors that can contribute to musculoskeletal disorders. Conclusion: There was a high prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders among brazilian dentists, and that the work-related activities contributed to musculoskeletal disorders in dentists.

Este estudo transversal quantitativo teve como objetivo identi car o per l dos agressores e das vítimas e caracterizar as agressões. Materiais e metodos: realizou-se o levantamento de dados em uma Delegacia de Mulheres, Idosos e Crianças de um município do oeste do estado de Minas Gerais, Brasil. Para a análise descritiva foram avaliadas as variáveis: tipo de agressão, sexo da vítima, sexo do agressor, grau de parentesco, idade da vítima, idade do agressor, data da agressão, hora da agressão, motivação para a agressão, zona corporal afetada e recidiva. Analisaram-se os registros de ocorrências datadas de julho a dezembro de 2013. Resultados: observou-se a existência de 247 registros de violência contra mulheres. Na maioria, as vítimas eram mulheres jovens, entre 20-35 anos de idade (77%). O agressor, no 89,8% dos casos, era do sexo masculino, com faixa etária entre 28-45 anos (82%). As agressões ocorriam pela tarde (31%) e pela noite (30%) a forma de violência predominante foi a verbal (48,4%). O motivo que mais gerava violência era a tentativa do casal de pôr m à sua relação sentimental (35%). Ressalta-se que houve recidiva nas situações de agressão no 54,5 das ocorrências. Conclusão: são elevados os índices de violência contra mulheres neste município de Minas Gerais. Recomenda-se o desenvolvimento de estratégias mais efetivas no combate à violência contra mulheres, com prioridade à prevenção e qualidade de vida das mulheres vitimizadas.

Introduction: The initial idea of AIDS as a disease that affects individuals with attitudes disapproved by society has caused stigmatization and prejudice among HIV positive individuals. Objective: To analyze the existence of prejudice and discriminatory attitudes of Unified Health System (“Sistema Único de Saúde” – SUS) users towards HIV positive individuals, according to socioeconomic class. Methods: This is a cross-sectional, descriptive research, with quantitative approaches. We categorized the population according to the Brazilian Criterion of Economic Classification, and applied a structured questionnaire related to prejudice, discrimination, and perceptions regarding sterilization and infectious diseases; as well as questions from a relevant Ministry of Health publication. Results: The study population consisted of 150 individuals, 77.3% of which asserted they would agree to be treated immediately after an HIV positive patient and 92% after a prisoner. However, 42% preferred being examined before HIV positive individuals, and 23.3% before a prisoner. The majority reported concern about the sterilization of dental material (98%), though 42% did not know how the procedure was carried out. Introducción: La legislación vigente brasileña establece que, en las industrias, los servicios de salud se realizan por el Servicio Especializado en Ingeniería de Seguridad y en Medicina del Trabajo (SESMT). Objetivo: Analizar las causas del absentismo por razones odontológicas y médicas y verificar la interferencia de factores como edad, sexo y función del trabajador, además de razones que más llevaron al empleado a ausentarse de su trabajo. Material y métodos: La investigación es un estudio descriptivo de abordaje cuantitativo. Se examinaron los certificados odontológicos y médicos y declaraciones de comparecencia debidamente homologados de una industria del sector acrílico del municipio de Araçatuba-SP, en el periodo de enero a julio de 2011. Resultados: Del total de certificados (n=1841), solo 103 (5,6%) presentaron razones odontológicas. Se observó predominancia de franja etaria de 20 a 29 años, sexo masculino y función no administrativa. Las causas odontológicas y médicas más comunes indicadas en los certificados que llevaron al funcionario a ausentarse del trabajo fueron "dientes incluidos e impactados" y "diarrea y gastroenteritis de origen infeccioso presumible", respectivamente. Sobre los factores relacionados al absentismo, se observó un índice de gravedad de 2,83, de frecuencia de 1,33 y la duración media de ausencias de 2,12. Conclusiones: Se concluye que las razones odontológicas tuvieron poca importancia sobre el total de ausencias por motivos de enfermedad, además que provocaron el ausentismo del trabajador por un periodo menor. Las variables edad y función no influyeron en la ocurrencia del absentismo en el trabajo.

Aim: To verify the knowledge of pregnant women on mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) of HIV, the availability of HIV tests in the public health system and counseling on the disease in two cities, Birigui and Piacatu, São Paulo State, Brazil. Methods: This is a descriptive and exploratory research using as samples, the files of 141 pregnant women attending the Basic Health Unit. Data were collected by survey, followed by a semi-structured questionnaire with open and closedend questions. Data were analyzed on Epi Info™ 7.1.4, by the Chi-square and Exact Fisher tests. Results: From all the 141 pregnant women, 119 were interviewed and 92.4% reported to have been informed about the need of taking the HIV test during prenatal exams. However, only 5.9% were counseled and 20.2% reported to be aware of how to prevent MTCT of HIV, usually mentioning lactation suppression and prescribed medication. The association between the knowledge about how to prevent MTCT of HIV and some social, demographic and economic variables like ethnics, educational level, home location, occupation, age and parenting was not verified. Conclusions: It is necessary to advise pregnant women on the importance of taking the HIV test regardless of the examination outcome, which was not observed in the cities where the research was conducted

Objective: To compare two forms of scheduling clinical dental care for the oral health teams (OHT) included in the strategy of family health, regarding productive aspects of assistance. Methods: Two OHT worked concurrently, using two methods of clinical care: the parameter recommended by the Ministry of Health Ordinance No. 1101, 2002, which establishes 03 dental visits per hour (c/h) per team, and a Testing model, with 02 c/h, being each method applied for a period of 615 hours. The quantitative data was collected in OHTs’ daily production spreadsheets, covering the following items: the number of dental visits (initial, for maintenance and for emergency procedures), procedures performed, consumption of material and sterilization cycles. Objetivou-se avaliar o conhecimento dos formandos em Odontologia sobre medidas de radioproteção na clínica odontológica visto tratar-se de uma profissão em que as tomadas radiográficas são procedimentos rotineiros. Realizou- se um estudo exploratório descritivo com abordagem quantitativa, os dados foram coletados através de questionários semiestruturado e auto aplicado. A população do estudo foi constituída por 63 alunos do ultimo ano do curso Odontologia da Faculdade de Odontologia de Araçatuba – UNESP. Para a análise estatística, foi utilizado o software Epi Info 6., através da distribuição de frequências e percentuais. Verificou-se que grande parte dos alunos não tem conhecimento sobre itens básicos de proteção radiológica, como a distância mínima segura para o operador em relação à fonte de raios-X, o filme radiográfico recomendado para uma menor exposição do paciente à radiação e a técnica mais indicada para evitar erros de posicionamento. A técnica mais utilizada pelos alunos é a bissetriz, demonstrando uma inadequação às exigências atuais. Quanto a proteção para o paciente, o avental plumbífero em associação ao protetor de tireóide foram citados por 61% dos formandos. Embora presente a preocupação quanto à proteção do paciente, existem lacunas no conhecimento dos futuros profissionais quanto às medidas de radioproteção em Odontologia. PALAVRAS-CHAVE:

INTRODUÇÃO: as oclusopatias estão entre os principais problemas de saúde bucal em todo o mundo, juntamente com a cárie dentária e a doença periodontal, e vários índices têm sido utilizados para registrá-las. OBJETIVOS: verificar a prevalência de oclusopatias utilizando a Classificação de Angle e o Índice de Estética Dentária (DAI), sua severidade e a necessidade de tratamento ortodôntico registradas pelo DAI, e comparar os resultados de ambos os índices, visando correlacionar o padrão dos dados coletados e a viabilidade de utilizá-los de forma conjunta. MÉTODOS: a amostra consistiu de 734 escolares com idade de 12 anos, de ambos os sexos, da rede pública do município de Lins/SP. Foram realizados exames nos pátios das escolas com utilização de sondas IPC a olho nu. RESULTADOS: pela Classificação de Angle, encontrou-se 33,24% das crianças com oclusão normal e 66,76% com má oclusão. Pelo DAI, observou-se que 65,26% das crianças apresentavam-se sem anormalidades ou com más oclusões leves. A má oclusão definida esteve presente em 12,81%, a má oclusão severa foi observada em 10,90% e a muito severa ou incapacitante em 11,03%. A maioria das crianças (70,57%) apresentou relação molar normal, e o overjet maxilar anterior foi a alteração mais frequentemente observada. No cruzamento dos índices houve semelhanças e divergências. CONCLUSÃO: o DAI não foi sensível a alguns problemas de oclusão detectados pela Classificação de Angle, e a recíproca foi verdadeira, demonstrando que ambos os índices possuem pontos distintos na detecção das oclusopatias, podendo ser utilizados de forma reciprocamente complementar.INTRODUCTION: The malocclusions are among the main buccal health problems all over the world, together with dental cavity and periodontal disease. Several indexes are being used for malocclusion registration. The present study verified the prevalence of this condition, using the Angle classification and the Dental Aesthetic Index (DAI), the severity and the necessity of orthodontic treatment registered with the DAI and the results of both indexes were compared, seeking to correlate collected data pattern and the viability of using them together. METHODS: The sample consisted of 734 schoolchildren with 12 years of age, both male and female from the public municipal schools in Lins-SP, Brazil. The exams were performed at the school's playgrounds with the use of IPC probes with a naked eye. RESULTS: For the Angle classification, it was found that 33.24% of the children presented normal occlusion and 66.76% presented malocclusions. It was observed, with the DAI, that 65.26% of the children had no abnormalities or had slight malocclusions. The defined malocclusion was present in 12.81%, severe malocclusion was observed in 10.90% and very severe or disabling malocclusion in 11.03%. Most of the children (70.57%) presented normal molar relationship and the anterior maxillary overjet was the most frequently observed alteration. When the indexes were compared there were similarities and divergences. CONCLUSION: DAI was not sensitive for some occlusion problems detected by the Angle classification, and vice-versa, demonstrating that both indexes have different points in malocclusions detection, so they could be used mutually in a complementary way.

O profissional de saúde é um ponto-chave para a implementação do Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS). À medida que exerce sua função, o sistema passa do aspecto teórico-conceitual para a prática da atenção. Objetivou-se neste estudo verificar o nível de conhecimento sobre o Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS) dos coordenadores de saúde bucal e cirurgiões-dentistas do serviço público dos 40 municípios da região noroeste do Estado de São Paulo. Utilizou-se um questionário estruturado, autoaplicável, composto de questões referentes aos princípios doutrinários e organizativos do SUS, controle social, financiamento, formação de recursos humanos, atenção e assistência em saúde. Dos entrevistados, 77 (89,5%) não sabiam quem era o responsável pelo planejamento e execução da assistência, 53 (61,6%) não tinham conhecimento de equidade, 46 (53,5%) de fundo de saúde e 45 (52,3%) de controle social. Conclui-se que existe deficiência no conhecimento de determinados assuntos, havendo necessidade de promoção de cursos a respeito da filosofia do SUS.The health professional is a key element for the implementation of Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS - National Health System). As it executes its function, this system goes from the theoretical and conceptual aspect to the care practice. The aim of this study was to verify the knowledge level about the National Health System (SUS) of the oral health coordinators and dental surgeons working in the public service of the forty cities located in the northwest region of the State of São Paulo. The study used a structured, self-administered questionnaire with questions about the National Health System's doctrinal and organizational principles, social control, financing, human resources education, health care and assistance. Among the interviewees, 77 (89.5%) did not know who was responsible for the planning and execution of assistance, 53 (61.6%) did not have knowledge about equity, 46 (53.5%) about health capital and 45 (52.3%) about social control. The conclusion was that there is lack of knowledge regarding some subjects; therefore, it is necessary to offer courses about the philosophy of the National Health System (SUS).

O presente estudo tem como objetivo analisar, por meio da técnica do Grupo Focal, o entendimento de adolescentes em relação à saúde bucal. A pesquisa foi realizada em três escolas públicas da cidade de Araçatuba, Estado de São Paulo, com dez alunos em cada uma delas. Para a realização dos grupos focais foram abordadas as seguintes palavras, presentes em perguntas de questionários sobre saúde bucal, as quais apresentaram altos índices de erros: saúde bucal; placa bacteriana; dente permanente; flúor; gengiva sangra?; fio dental; transmissão da cárie. Durante as discussões dos grupos focais, observou-se que muitos adolescentes ficavam surpresos com a situação a qual foram submetidos e com o tema que estavam discutindo. A palavra ‘saúde bucal’ foi associada à condição de limpeza dacavidade bucal, não identificando a saúde bucal como parte da saúde geral. O termo ‘transmissão da cárie’ não teve um entendimento suficiente. A expressão ‘dente permanente’ foi bem compreendida, sendo associada a um tipo de dente que não seria mais substituído.A palavra ‘flúor’ teve maior associação à função de limpeza do que à proteção dos dentes. Conclui-se que a utilização da técnica do Grupo Focal é de grande importância na interpretação do conhecimento dos adolescentes sobre saúde bucal e na adequação da terminologia de questionários sobre o mesmo tema.This study aims to the understanding of adolescents regarding oral health, using the Focus Group technique. The study was conducted at three public schools in the city of Araçatuba, São Paulo State, Brazil, with ten students in each. In order to conduct the focus groups, the following words, which featured high error levels, wereaddressed in survey questions on oral health: oral health; plaque, permanent teeth; fluoride; gum bleeds?; dental floss; transmission of cavities. During the discussions in the focus groups, it was observed that many teenagers were surprised at the situation to which theywere submitted and at the topic they were discussing. The word ‘oral health’ was associated with the condition of cleanliness of the oral cavity, not identifying oral health as part of general health. The term ‘transmission of cavities’ did not have a sufficient understanding. The term ‘permanent tooth’ was well understood and was associated with a type of tooth that would not be replaced. The word ‘fluoride’ had more association with the task of cleaning than protection of the teeth. It is concluded that the use of the focus group technique is of great importance in the interpretation of the knowledge of adolescents on oral health and the appropriateness of the terminology of questionnaires on the same subject.

Os princípios de universalidade, integralidade e eqüidade do SUS só podem ser viabilizados com a construção de um modelo de financiamento flexível e transparente que permita o controle social e ofereça a agilidade no uso dos recursos. Este artigo analisa as dificuldades e desafios do financiamento da saúde bucal na ótica de gestores e técnicos da área. A coleta de dados ocorreu por meio de entrevistas, queforam gravadas e transcritas para análise qualitativa, preconizada por Bardin. As dificuldades relatadas pelos entrevistados foram expressas em frases como: "Procuro cumprir a agenda, porém muita coisa não consegui devido à falta de recursos", "não se sabe o quanto pode gastar", "escassez de recursos para procedimentos de média e grande complexidades", "falta de recurso para troca de equipamento" e "prioridade para compra de materiais". No que tange aos desafios foi relatada a necessidade de "capacitação", "formação" e "organização" dos recursos humanos em saúde pública. Observa-se a dificuldade na realização completa do plano previsto de gestão, assim como a necessidade de compromisso por parte dos gestores em acompanhar as etapas de todo processo de repasse financeiro e aplicação do mesmo.The principles of universality, completeness, and equity of the Unified Health System (SUS) only can be made viable with the construction of a flexible and transparent financing model that allows social control and offers agility in the use of resources. This article analyzes the difficulties and challenges of oral health financing in the perspective of managers and technicians who work in the Unique Health System. Data was collected through interviews, which were recorded and transcribed for qualitative analysis, according to Bardin's method. The difficulties reported by all interviewees were expressed by phrases such as "I try to fulfill my commitments, but I don't succeed due the lack of resources", "I don't know how much money I can spend", "scarce resources for medium and high complexity procedures", "lack of resources for replacing equipments" and "priority for purchasing materials". While discussing the challenges, the interviewees emphasized the need for "qualification", "training" and "planning" of human resources in public health. They also mentioned the difficulty in accomplishing the management plan, as in obtaining the managers' commitment in following all the stages of the transfer and application of funds.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is a worldwide health public problem, affecting over 123 million people. HCV infected individuals should have access to dental services, even those who are liver transplant candidates or who are undergoing medical treatment. It is also important that they are pleased with the service offered. Objective: Characterize the patients infected by HCV and verify their satisfaction with dental care in comparison to non infected individuals. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was carried out on 170 individuals, divided into two groups, HCV infected group (85 individuals) and non-infected group (85 individuals). Participants answered a questionnaire about their demographic data, risk factors, accessibility and satisfaction with dental service. Results: HCV infected group had lower education level, having only 30.6% finished pre-school. Considering sexual orientation, 70.6% of HCV infected group was heterosexual and 92.9% had one regular sexual partner. Sixty- five HCV infected individuals (77.4%) and 72 non-infected (85.7%) reported not using condoms during sexual intercourse. Forty-two percent of HCV infected group and 61.2% of non-infected group were satisfied with dental service. At multivariate analysis, education level was risk variable. Conclusion: Education level was a risk factor to HCV infection and HCV infected patients showed lower frequency of satisfaction with dental services.

Os profissionais da saúde devem preocupar-se com os resíduos gerados por suas atividades, e desenvolver competências e habilidades específicas desde a graduação, exigindo dos mesmos um posicionamento consciente e disponibilidade para colaborar na busca de soluções. Verificar o conhecimento dos graduandos do curso de odontologia de uma Faculdade Pública do Estado de São Paulo que estavam em atividade clínica no primeiro semestre de 2012, sobre o gerenciamento de resíduos de serviço de saúde. Foi realizado um estudo descritivo, de caráter transversal. O instrumento de coleta de dados foi um questionário auto administrado, e após a coleta foi feita a tabulação dos resultados por meio do programa Epi Info 6.04. Os valores foram expressos, por meio de frequências, na forma de gráficos e tabelas. Dos 140 acadêmicos partici- pantes, a maioria (96,4%) diz saber o que são RSS. No entanto, 45,7% responderam de forma incorreta como descartar os resíduos do grupo A (sugadores e luvas infectados) e 6,4% sobre o descarte do grupo E (perfurocortantes). Em relação às soluções utilizadas para revelação e fixação e as lâminas de chumbo das películas de RX, 30% e 48,6%, respectivamente, não souberam responder qual a forma correta. Conclui-se que o conhecimento dos graduandos sobre o tema ainda é falho, refletindo a necessidade das metodologias de ensino buscarem meios de sensibilizar os futuros cirurgiões-dentistas, para que os mesmos desenvolvam o senso de responsabilidade e compromisso ético com a saúde da sociedade e o meio ambiente.

Introduction: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a serious public health problem and is the leading cause of liver transplantation due to cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. In Brazil, it is estimated that there are approximately 2 to 3 million HCV chronic carriers. Few data regarding HCV infection are available in West region of Minas Gerais State. In the absence of an effective vaccine against this important human pathogen and high costs of antiviral treatment, it is important to conduct epidemiological studies for planning and implementing measures to prevent hepatitis C in different populations. Therefore, the aim of this study is to determine the clinical and epidemiological aspects of HCV patients from West region of Minas Gerais State, Brazil. Methods: Sociodemographic data and risk factors for HCV infection were determined from 74 HCV patients from Uberlândia city (Minas Gerais State). Reactive anti-HCV sera samples were submitted to HCV RNA and genotype detection. Results: Most of individuals were male (63.5%) with mean age of 51 years and presenting low socioeconomic status. HCV genotype was determined among 40 samples and the frequencies were: genotype 2 (45%), 1 (37.5%) and 3 (17.5%). Conclusions: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection was common among male and low socioeconomic status individuals.

O objetivo do estudo foi analisar os índices CPOD, ceod, SiC Index e a porcentagem de crianças livres de cárie, em escolares de 5 a 12 anos da rede pública do Município de Bilac, São Paulo, Brasil, em estudos realizados nos anos de 1998, 2000, 2002 e 2004. Utilizou-se a mesma metodologia (OMS-1997) em todos os levantamentos. O teste estatístico kappa foi calculado a cada estudo, obtendo-se o valor de concordância interexaminadores mínimo de 0,86 e máximo de 0,89, e intra-examinador mínimo de 0,91. O índice ceod diminuiu pouco nos anos de 1998 e 2004. Houve uma redução contínua do índice CPOD aos 12 anos, passando de 5,28 em 1998 para 4,11 em 2000, 3,47 em 2002 e 2,62 em 2004, e o fenômeno da polarização. Na proporção inversa, a porcentagem de crianças com 5 anos livres de cárie aumentou de 37,9% em 1998 para 40% em 2000 e 2002, e 45,3% em 2004. Conclui-se que está ocorrendo a redução da cárie dentária na faixa etária de 12 anos entre escolares do ensino público do município.This study analyzes the DMF and DEF indices, SiC index, and percentage of caries-free public schoolchildren in the municipality of Bilac, São Paulo State, Brazil, in 1998, 2000, 2002, and 2004. The same methodology was employed (WHO-1997) in all the surveys. Kappa test was carried out at each stage, and the minimal and maximum inter-examiner agreement values obtained were 0.86 and 0.89, respectively, while minimal intra-examiner agreement values were 0.91. DEF indices decreased slightly in the years 1998 and 2004. There was a continuous reduction in the DMF index, as well as the phenomenon of polarization at 12 years of age. The rate was 5.28 in 1998, decreasing to 4.11 in 2000, 3.47 in 2002, and 2.62 in 2004. Inversely, the proportion of caries-free 5-year-olds increased from 37.9% in 1998 to 40% in 2000 and 2002 and 45.3% in 2004. In conclusion, there has been a decrease in dental caries in 12 year-old public schoolchildren in the municipality.

Objetivo: identificar a relação entre o nível de conhecimento dos agentes comunitários de saúde sobre saúde bucal e a presença da Equipe de Saúde Bucal na Estratégia Saúde da Família. Métodos: uma pesquisa tipo inquérito foi realizada com 173 agentes comunitários de saúde alocados na rede pública de saúde em cinco municípios da região noroeste do estado de São Paulo, Brasil, por meio de um questionário autoaplicável, estruturado. O instrumento da pesquisa contemplava perguntas referentes à presença da Equipe de Saúde Bucal na Estratégia Saúde da Família e questões sobre saúde bucal. Resultados: a maioria dos agentes comunitários de saúde estava inserida em estratégias com a presença de Equipes de Saúde Bucal (60,1%). Verificou-se que o conhecimento em saúde bucal da maioria dos participantes foi bom (48%). Conclusão: existe relação entre o nível de conhecimento dos agentes comunitários de saúde e a presença da Equipe de Saúde Bucal na Estratégia Saúde da Família.

A percepção do Agente Comunitário de Saúde (ACS) quanto à ética no seu trabalho foi avaliada neste estudo. Aplicou-se um questionário abordando conflitos éticos na prática assistencial em 61 ACS. 90% relataram terem recebido informações sobre o tema, sendo ‘cursos profissionais’ o meio mais citado (68,9%). Em uma escala de 1 (mínimo) a 5 (máximo), 67% alegaram possuir conhecimento a respeito da ética entre 4 ou 5 e 88,5% informaram que esse tópico tem uma importância de 5 no seu trabalho. Os conflitos éticos expostos obtiveram uma média de 75% das respostas em acordo com as fontes de referência, sendo que os itens envolvendo "privacidade de informação" apresentaram as maiores discordâncias. A ética foi considerada importante para a atuação profissional dos sujeitos, os quais obtiveram uma percepção adequada sobre a matéria, entretanto o tópico ‘privacidade de informação’ gerou controvérsias.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi revisar a literatura sobre educação em saúde bucal para pré-escolares, considerando sua importância, os agentes promotores de saúde no contexto da educação e a avaliação de programas educacionais. Para tanto, foi realizada uma pesquisa bibliográfica descritiva nas bases de dados “LILACS”, “BBO” e “PUBMED”, através de palavras-chaves relacionadas ao tema. Verificou-se que todos os trabalhos ressaltaram o efeito benéfico da educação em saúde bucal, salientando que os educadores devem estar devidamente capacitados para tal proposta, fazendo uso de ferramentas adequadas para motivar os educandos e despertar neles o interesse para que o objetivo de promover saúde se concretize. A influência positiva da educação, motivação e orientação em saúde bucal sobre a redução de placa, gengivite e melhora da higiene bucal em pré-escolares, foi observada por diversos autores, confirmando ser a motivação/orientação um fator fundamental na criação e desenvolvimento de hábitos saudáveis.

A violência é um problema social grave que precisa ser estudada de diferentes maneiras. Uma manifestação de violência pouco discutida é a institucional, praticada cotidianamente por membros de serviços básicos como saúde, educação, segurança, etc, que atingem o cidadão nos seus direitos mais primários. O objetivo deste estudo foi verificar a ocorrência de violência institucional nas pré-escolas. Realizou-se um estudo epidemiológico observacional em pré-escolas do município de Araçatuba – SP, onde os dados foram processados pelo software Epi Info 2000. Observou-se que em 20,7% das pré-escolas analisadas, os brinquedos pedagógicos não eram suficientes para todas as crianças. O armazenamento dos objetos pessoais foi insatisfatório em várias pré-escolas. Quanto às chupetas e mamadeiras, em 70 % das escolas não se utilizavam procedimentos adequados de limpeza. Conclui-se que o ambiente das pré-escolas analisadas são acolhedores em vários aspectos; porém, apresenta problemas em outros, alguns de suma importância, como a falta de brinquedos pedagógicos adequados, fator que pode acarretar sérias conseqüências ao desenvolvimento motor da criança e o uso coletivo de objetos pessoais, que favorece a disseminação de doenças infecciosas. A partir da detecção das falhas apontadas neste estudo, é possível planejar ações direcionadas, visando o pleno desenvolvimento das crianças que freqüentam essas instituições

O presente estudo tem como objetivo analisar, por meio da técnica do Grupo Focal, o entendimento de adolescentes em relação à saúde bucal. A pesquisa foi realizada em três escolas públicas da cidade de Araçatuba, Estado de São Paulo, com dez alunos em cada uma delas. Para a realização dos grupos focais foram abordadas as seguintes palavras, presentes em perguntas de questionários sobre saúde bucal, as quais apresentaram altos índices de erros: saúde bucal; placa bacteriana; dente permanente; flúor; gengiva sangra?; fio dental; transmissão da cárie. Durante as discussões dos grupos focais, observou-se que muitos adolescentes ficavam surpresos com a situação a qual foram submetidos e com o tema que estavam discutindo. A palavra ‘saúde bucal’ foi associada à condição de limpeza da cavidade bucal, não identificando a saúde bucal como parte da saúde geral. O termo ‘transmissão da cárie’ não teve um entendimento suficiente. A expressão ‘dente permanente’ foi bem compreendida, sendo associada a um tipo de dente que não seria mais substituído. A palavra ‘flúor’ teve maior associação à função de limpeza do que à proteção dos dentes. Conclui-se que a utilização da técnica do Grupo Focal é de grande importância na interpretação do conhecimento dos adolescentes sobre saúde bucal e na adequação da terminologia de questionários sobre o mesmo tema.

O objetivo do estudo foi analisar os índices CPOD, ceod, SiC Index e a porcentagem de crianças livres de cárie, em escolares de 5 a 12 anos da rede pública do Município de Bilac, São Paulo, Brasil, em estudos realizados nos anos de 1998, 2000, 2002 e 2004. Utilizou-se a mesma metodologia (OMS-1997) em todos os levantamentos. O teste estatístico kappa foi calculado a cada estudo, obtendo-se o valor de concordância interexaminadores mínimo de 0,86 e máximo de 0,89, e intra-examinador mínimo de 0,91. O índice ceod diminuiu pouco nos anos de 1998 e 2004. Houve uma redução contínua do índice CPOD aos 12 anos, passando de 5,28 em 1998 para 4,11 em 2000, 3,47 em 2002 e 2,62 em 2004, e o fenômeno da polarização. Na proporção inversa, a porcentagem de crianças com 5 anos livres de cárie aumentou de 37,9% em 1998 para 40% em 2000 e 2002, e 45,3% em 2004. Conclui-se que está ocorrendo a redução da cárie dentária na faixa etária de 12 anos entre escolares do ensino público do município.

Resumo Introdução O Código de Ética Odontológica (CEO), Resolução CFO-118 de maio de 2012, é um documento que preconiza a atuação ética dos profissionais registrados no Conselho Federal de Odontologia, com a intenção de orientação, reflexão e normatização do exercício profissional. Objetivo Analisar o conteúdo do CEO vigente, de forma a identificar aspectos relevantes abordados neste documento. Material e método Realizou-se uma pesquisa documental, descritiva, do CEO de 2012. Os conteúdos textuais dos artigos, parágrafos e incisos da Resolução CFO-118/2012 foram processados pelo software IRAMUTEQ e analisados pelas técnicas lexicográficas de Classificação Hierárquica Descendente (CHD), Análise de Similitude e Nuvem de Palavras. Resultado Na análise quantiqualitativa do corpus textual, foram observadas 5.340 palavras, com média de 89,0 palavras por artigo do CEO. Do total, foram encontradas 1.417 palavras distintas e 1.073 destas, que apresentaram média superior a 3,1 ocorrências por artigo, foram incluídas pelo software na CHD. Esta classificação resultou em seis classes: “Equipe de Saúde”, “Relacionamento Profissional-Paciente”, “Vedações”, “Publicidade e Propaganda”, “Conjunto Normativo” e “Prestação de Serviços”, sendo esta última a mais prevalente (20,1%) e caracterizada pelas palavras: tratamento (χ2=35,6), custo (χ2 =16,5) e trabalho (χ2=16,1). A partir das seis classes, foram identificados três grandes ramos: profissional (29,2%), assistencial (39,3%) e publicidade e propaganda (31,5%). Conclusão A análise léxica demonstrou valorização da prestação de serviços, priorização do ramo assistencial da profissão e de virtudes relacionadas ao profissional, segundo análise do CEO de 2012.

Abstract: INTRODUCTION: The incidence of Hansen's disease is high in overlooked populations. METHODS: Data of Hansen's disease cases reported in the information system of the Department of Informatics, Brazilian Unified Health System, from 2013 to 2014 were analyzed. RESULTS: Among 434 studied cases of Hansen's disease, the female sex (52.5%), adult age (73.7%), low educational level (61.8%), and multibacillary form were associated with higher prevalence rates. CONCLUSIONS: Hansen's disease is more frequent among female adults with a low educational level, and the prevalence of multibacillary leprosy reflects disease detection at late stages.

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Dentists are considered professionals highly vulnerable to occupational problems and such injuries are sometimes caused by adopted postures and repetitive efforts during their work. This study aimed at checking the prevalence of musculoskeletal pain and to observe whether the work of dentists acting in both public and private sectors was carried out ergonomically. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional, descriptive and observational study with dentists (n=80). A self-applicable questionnaire was used to check the frequency of musculoskeletal pain and occupational injuries, as well as to record labor activities, practice of physical activity and their frequencies. Professionals were observed while carrying out dental assistance based on recommendations of the document “Adopting a healthy sitting working posture during patient treatment”, which is part of the International Standards Organization standardization 106/SC 6 N 411 from 2006. RESULTS: There has been job-related pain in at least 65.67% of dentists. The number of individuals adopting incorrect and inadequate positions during assistance was high, such as: head rotation (73.13%); spine rotation (47.76%) and legs angle less than 90o (91.04%). Medical leaves related to occupational injuries were found in a greater proportion among public service professionals (64%). CONCLUSION: There has been high prevalence of musculoskeletal pain related to inadequate postures adopted during clinical assistance and to long working hours without pause.

Abstract INTRODUCTION: In the 1990s, Brazil adopted a public policy that allowed for universal, free access to antiretroviral therapy (ART). Since then, treatment adherence has become a new challenge for administrators of sexually transmitted disease/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (STD/AIDS) policies. This study quantified adherence to ART and verified whether there is an association between sociodemographic variables and clinical/laboratory data in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional, exploratory study with a quantitative approach that was conducted over 8 months. The target population contained patients who were assisted at the ambulatory care facility specialized in STD/AIDS of a medium-size city located in Northwest São Paulo. In order to verify the level of adherence to ART, a validated CEAT-VIH (Assessment of Adherence to Antiretroviral Therapy Questionnaire) questionnaire was used. Sociodemographic aspects and clinical/laboratory data were obtained from the medical records. The results were analyzed using the Student's t-test and Pearson's coefficient. RESULTS Herein, 109 patients were interviewed, 56% of whom were male. The age of the population ranged 18-74 years (mean 45.67 years). Adherence to ART was classified as insufficient in 80.7% of cases. ABSTRACT BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Quality of life has always been a human concern, especially nowadays when job market requirements are exposing dentists to stressing situations and adverse conditions, thus favoring the installation of several labor-related diseases. This study aimed at evaluating labor-related musculoskeletal disorders, painful symptoms and their relation with quality of life and the use of preventive measures by dentists. METHODS: Study population was made up of dentists of the private network (n=64). Two self-applicable questionnaires were used being one to measure quality of life World Health Organization Quality of Life-bref and the other for musculoskeletal disorders. RESULTS: Pain was more prevalent on neck and cervical spine (49.2%), followed by lumbar region (40%). With regard to quality of life, physical domain had higher mean scores (76.5%) followed by social relations domain (74.9%). CONCLUSION: The region with higher prevalence of pain was neck and cervical spine and professionals with pain were not so happy with their quality of life.

ABSTRACTIntroductionThe promotion of oral health in children is highly important, as well as parents' motivation to adopt the attitudes necessary for the maintenance of the health of their children.ObjectiveTo evaluate parents' attitudes about their children's oral health and to determine the prevalence of dental caries.Material and methodA cross-sectional analytical study, conducted with parents and preschoolers from the elementary schools in Araçatuba. A formal instrument was used to collect data, in order to evaluate parents' attitudes regarding their children's oral health. A clinical oral exam was performed in order to determine the decayed, missing and filled teeth (dmft) and Index of Oral Health–Simplified (IOH–S). The collected data were analyzed using the SPSS 21.0 software.ResultThe state of the children's oral health was good; the mean of the decayed, missing and filled teeth (dmft) was 0.68 (Standard deviation = 1.70). Most of the children presented a mean index of oral hygiene (IOHS = 1.51, Standard deviation = 0.48). The parents' attitudes related to oral health were not very good. Many of them did not floss their children's teeth; the bottle-fed children did not brush after feeding. The consumption of sugar was associated with the presence of dental plaque in the children (p=0.05). Nevertheless, in most cases, tooth brushing was performed by the parents and was associated with a good dmft index in the children (p=0.04).ConclusionThe state of children's oral health in the present study was good. However, the parents' attitudes in relation to oral health were not good.

O absenteísmo é um assunto de interesse crescente devido ao atual contexto econômico de competitividade, que faz com que as empresas procurem meios para diminuir sua ocorrência, aumentando a rentabilidade e com isso crescendo de forma sustentada. Procurou-se estudar o absenteísmo por razões odontológicas e médicas, nos serviços público e privado, analisando se a idade, o sexo e a função do trabalhador, além do regime empregatício, interferem na sua ocorrência. Desenvolveu-se o estudo na prefeitura do município de Araçatuba, São Paulo, Brasil, e em uma indústria acrílica. Para a coleta dos dados, analisaram-se todos os atestados odontológicos e médicos, que deram entrada nas empresas no período de janeiro a junho de 2002 e as listagens dos trabalhadores. Verificou-se que a falta por motivos odontológicos tiveram pouco peso sobre o total de faltas por motivo de doença, além de provocarem o afastamento do trabalhador por um período menor. As variáveis idade, sexo, função e regime empregatício influenciaram na ocorrência do absenteísmo ao trabalho. A disponibilidade dessas informações deverá ser muito importante, pois, visto as inúmeras variáveis envolvidas, facilitarão a tomada de decisões das distintas estratégias para sua prevenção.

SUMMARY This study aims to analyze the dental surgeons' knowledge about leprosy and its ways of transmission, clinical characteristics and treatment, besides analyzing their experience with respect to diagnostic suspicion and case referrals. The study population comprised 242 dental surgeons working in the public dental service of the city of Cuiabá, Mato Grosso, Brazil. A self-applicable questionnaire containing questions about the dental surgeon's profile was used, including his/her knowledge on leprosy, as well as his/her practices concerning the disease. The results showed a predominance of female dental surgeons (65.7%), with ages ranging between 30 and 39 years old (43%) and professionals having six to 10 years of experience since graduation. Concerning their time working in the Unified Health System (SUS), the highest percentage of dental surgeons referred more than 10 years. Regarding the knowledge about the disease, 30.6% did not know the efficacy of the treatment of leprosy, 47% did not know the disease had to be notified compulsorily and only 8.3% had received information about leprosy at work. Besides that, most of them mentioned feeling little security when treating patients with leprosy (61.6%). Thus, dental surgeons' deficient knowledge on issues related to leprosy may be highlighted.
