This abstract was presented at the Conference organized by the British Society of Animal Science, in Birmingham, from 28-30th March 2023, and presentsa longitudinal comparative analysis of the health and welfare of goats reared under intensive and extensive farming systems.

The national infrastructure FoodOmicsGR_RI coordinates research efforts from eight Greek Universities and Research Centers in a network aiming to support research and development (R&D) in the agri-food sector. The goals of FoodOmicsGR_RI are the comprehensive in-depth characterization of foods using cutting-edge omics technologies and the support of dietary/nutrition studies. The network combines strong omics expertise with expert field/application scientists (food/nutrition sciences, plant protection/plant growth, animal husbandry, apiculture and 10 other fields). Human resources involve more than 60 staff scientists and more than 30 recruits. State-of-the-art technologies and instrumentation is available for the comprehensive mapping of the food composition and available genetic resources, the assessment of the distinct value of foods, and the effect of nutritional intervention on the metabolic profile of biological samples of consumers and animal models. The consortium has the know-how and expertise that covers the breadth of the Greek agri-food sector. Metabolomics teams have developed and implemented a variety of methods for profiling and quantitative analysis. The implementation plan includes the following research axes: Development of a detailed database of Greek food constituents; exploitation of ‘omics’ technologies to assess domestic agricultural biodiversity aiding authenticity-traceability control/certification of geographical/genetic origin; highlighting unique characteristics of Greek products with an emphasis on quality, sustainability and food safety; assessment of diet’s effect on health and well-being; creating added value from agri-food waste. FoodOmicsGR_RI develops new tools to evaluate the nutritional value of Greek foods, study the role of traditional foods and Greek functional foods in the prevention of chronic diseases and support health claims of Greek traditional products. FoodOmicsGR_RI provides access to state-of-the-art facilities, unique, well-characterised sample sets, obtained from precision/experimental farming/breeding (milk, honey, meat, olive oil and so forth) along with more than 20 complementary scientific disciplines. The SMARTER (SMAll RuminanT breeding for Efficiency and Resilience) H2020 project aims to develop and implement innovative strategies to improve resilience and efficiency (R&E) related traits in sheep and goats. Regarding feed efficiency, the objective is to identify novel traits that would be relevant, easy to measure and cheap enough to be collected in many animals to identify the most efficient individuals. In practice, feed efficiency can be assessed by different criteria such as residual feed intake and feed conversion ratio. Both criteria require feed intake to be measured for each individual which remains an expensive trait to get and hardly feasible under farm conditions. Thus, our objective is to identify novel traits related to feed efficiency and use them as proxies for feed intake and/or feed efficiency. First, novel phenotypes are identified and studied in experimental farms where feed intakes of concentrate and forage are recorded for each animal. Different novel phenotypes are being considered to study feed efficiency in sheep and goats, including (i) biomarkers (from blood or milk metabolomics), (ii) differentially expressed genes in targeted tissues, (iii) genomic polymorphisms, (iv) ruminal microbiota, (v) faecal NIR spectra, (vi) greenhouse gas emissions and body composition traits. These novel traits will be recorded either under classical feeding or under nutritional restriction to quantify, for example, the impact of a shortage of concentrate inputs. Then, the most promising novel traits will be measured in commercial populations. From these larger datasets, we will estimate heritabilities of the novel traits and genetic correlations to other traits in the breeding goal. Finally, for some case studies, we will quantify GxE interactions, particularly by considering the same breed under different breeding systems or regions.

Η υποξεία δυσπεπτική οξέωση (ΥΔΟ) αποτελεί μία από τις πλέον σημαντικές μεταβολικές νόσους των γαλακτοπαραγωγών αγελάδων. Ορίζεται ως η πτώση του pH της μεγάλης κοιλίας (ΜΚ) κάτω από 5,5 (έως 5,0) και ο κύριος τρόπος διάγνωσής της στην κλινική πράξη μέχρι σήμερα είναι η παρακέντηση της MK. Η ΥΔΟ επηρεάζει την ομαλή παραγωγή λιπαρών οξέων στη ΜΚ και, μεταξύ άλλων, προκαλεί μείωση της λιποπεριεκτικότητας και της παραγόμενης ποσότητας γάλακτος. Κύριος σκοπός της έρευνας ήταν η διερεύνηση της σχέσης της ΥΔΟ και του pH του περιεχομένου της ΜΚ με την ποσότητα και την ποιότητα του γάλακτος, σε διαφορετικά στάδια της γαλακτικής περιόδου, υπό συνθήκες εκτροφής. Χρησιμοποιήθηκαν 83 αγελάδες φυλής Holstein μιας εμπορικής εκτροφής, από τις οποίες ελήφθησαν δείγματα περιεχομένου της ΜΚ με παρακέντηση για τον προσδιορισμό του pH, τις ημέρες 30, 90 και 150 της γαλακτικής περιόδου. Η εκτροφή διέθετε αυτόματη ατομική γαλακτομέτρηση και τις ημέρες των παρακεντήσεων γινόταν δειγματοληψία γάλακτος για προσδιορισμό της χημικής του σύνθεσης (περιεκτικότητα σε λίπος, πρωτεΐνες, λακτόζη και ολικά στερεά). Η ανάλυση των δεδομένων έγινε με μια σειρά γραμμικών μοντέλων μικτών επιδράσεων. Ο επιπολασμός της ΥΔΟ ήταν 48,2%, 53,8% και 65,3% τις ημέρες 30, 90 και 150 της γαλακτικής περιόδου, αντίστοιχα. Βρέθηκε ότι η ΥΔΟ σχετίζεται με μείωση της λιποπεριεκτικότητας του γάλακτος κατά 0,22%. Η αύξηση του pH της ΜΚ κατά 1 μονάδα, ακόμη κι εντός των φυσιολογικών ορίων, σχετίστηκε με αύξηση της λιποπεριεκτικότητας του γάλακτος κατά 0,28% και της συγκέντρωσης των ολικών στερεών του γάλακτος κατά 0,44%. Η ημερήσια γαλακτοπαραγωγή, δεν επηρεάστηκε από την ΥΔΟ, καθώς και η συγκέντρωση της πρωτεΐνης, της λακτόζης και των ολικών στερεών του γάλακτος., Subacute ruminal acidosis (SARA; implying a rumen fluid pH between 5.5 and 5.0), is one of the most important metabolic diseases of dairy cows. In this study, the effect of SARA and rumen fluid pH on milk yield and composition was assessed in dairy cows under field conditions, with repeated measurements in the same cows, at different stages of lactation. Rumenocentesis was performed in 83 Holstein cows of a commercial herd at 30, 90, and 150 days in milk (DIM). Rumen fluid pH was measured on-site using a portable pH-meter. Milk yield was also recorded at the same days. Milk samples were analyzed for fat, protein, lactose and total solids content. For the statistical analysis, mixed linear regression models were used. Prevalence of SARA was 48.2%, 53.8% and 65.3% at 30, 90 and 150 DIM, respectively. There was a significant negative effect of SARA and decreased rumen fluid pH on milk fat content; SARA was associated with a decrease of milk fat content by 0.22%, while a one-unit increase of rumen fluid pH, even within the normal range, was associated with a 0.28% increase of milk fat content and 0.44% increase of milk total solids content. There was no effect of SARA on milk yield or protein, lactose and total solids content. In conclusion, under field conditions, SARA and decreased rumen fluid pH reduce milk fat content.

Η εφαρμογή μέτρων υγιεινής σε μια εκτροφή βοοειδών έχει σαν στόχο: α) τη διατήρηση της υγείας των ζώων, προστατεύοντας τα τόσο από νέους παθογόνους παράγοντες όσο και από εκείνους που υπάρχουν ήδη στην εκτροφή και β) την παραγωγή ασφαλών προϊόντων. Τα γενικά μέτρα υγιεινής βρίσκουν εφαρμογή ανεξάρτητα από τα συγκεκριμένα προβλήματα που αντιμετωπίζει κάθε εκτροφή. Οι 'ανοικτές' εκτροφές, τα ζώα των οποίων έρχονται σε επαφή με βοοειδή άλλων εκτροφών (αγορά ζώων για αναπαραγωγή, συμμετοχή σε εκθέσεις, κοινοί βοσκότοποι κ.λπ.), πρέπει να εφαρμόζουν αυστηρά μέτρα ελέγχου, όπως απομόνωση των εισερχόμενων ζώων, κλινικές και εργαστηριακές εξετάσεις, εμβολιασμοί κ.λπ. Συνεπώς, οι 'κλειστές' εκτροφές παρουσιάζουν σημαντικά υγειονομικά και διαχειριστικά πλεονεκτήματα. Επιπλέον, όλες οι εκτροφές πρέπει να εφαρμόζουν μέτρα ελέγχου-περιορισμοΰ των επισκεπτών και των οχημάτων τους και μέτρα ελέγχου-προστασιας των ζωοτροφών και του νεροΰ σε όλα τα επίπεδα. Η διατήρηση οποιουδήποτε ζώου (παραγωγικού ή συντροφιάς) στις εκτροφές πρέπει να αποφεύγεται και να αποτρέπεται η είσοδος άλλων ζώων, αδέσποτων ή μη. Η συστηματική καταπολέμηση των εντόμων και των τρωκτικών και η απομάκρυνση των άγριων πτηνών είναι απαραίτητη. Η ομαδοποίηση των ζώων ανάλογα με την ηλικία τους, η αποφυγή συστέγασης των νεαρών με τα μεγαλύτερα ζώα, η τήρηση των προδιαγραφών κατασκευής των βουστασιων σε συνδυασμό με τον σωστό αερισμό και τον συχνό καθαρισμό τους, η εφαρμογή όπου είναι δυνατόν του συστήματος all in - all out και οι κατάλληλες απολυμάνσεις είναι απαραίτητα για τον περιορισμό της διάδοσης των παθογόνων παραγόντων μέσα στην εκτροφή. Τα επικίνδυνα υλικά και τα φάρμακα πρέπει να φυλάσσονται σε χώρους ελεγχόμενης πρόσβασης. Η κατάλληλη διατροφή και η αποφυγή των καταπονήσεων ενισχύουν το ανοσοποιητικό σύστημα των ζώων, ενώ η επιλογή τους με τη χρήση ειδικών γενετικών δεικτών αυξάνει την ανθεκτικότητα τους. Τέλος, η σωστή διαχείριση των αποβλήτων κατά τον χειρισμό και την αποθήκευση τους μειώνει τον κίνδυνο μετάδοσης νοσημάτων. Τα προγράμματα ειδικών μέτρων υγιεινής στοχεύουν στην αντιμετώπιση των συγκεκριμένων υγειονομικών προβλημάτων που απασχολούν μια εκτροφή. Αυτά καταρτίζονται με βάση τη μεθοδολογία της «ανάλυσης κίνδυνων» {risk analysis), η οποία περιλαμβάνει την «εκτίμηση του κίνδυνου» {risk assessment), τη «διαχείριση του κίνδυνου » {risk management) και την «επικοινωνία του κίνδυνου» {risk communication). Στην ιεράρχηση των προβλημάτων, κτηνίατροι και κτηνοτρόφοι λαμβάνουν υπόψη την επίδραση τους στην παραγωγικότητα της εκτροφής, στη δημόσια υγεία και στην ευζωία των βοοειδών. Η ομαδοποίηση των υγειονομικών προβλημάτων με βάση κάποια κοινά τους χαρακτηριστικά επιτρέπει, με την ίδια ή με μικρή επιπλέον προσπάθεια, την ταυτόχρονη αντιμετώπιση τους. Εμπόδια στην εφαρμογή των μέτρων υγιεινής αποτελούν η έλλειψη της σχετικής νοοτροπίας από τους κτηνοτρόφους και ο πλημμελής σχεδιασμός, η άναρχη ανάπτυξη και η ανεπαρκής οργάνωση των ελληνικών εκτροφών. Ευθύνη, όμως, για την υστέρηση στον τομέα αυτό φέρει και ο κτηνιατρικός κλάδος λόγω ελλιπούς εκπαίδευσης και έλλειψης κινήτρων., The aim of implementing biosecurity measures on cattle farms is: a) to preserve a high health status of animals by protecting them from new and existing pathogens and b) to ensure the production of safe food. General biosecurity measures should be implemented in any farm regardless of any specific problem. In "open" herds, where cattle have contact with animals from different farms (purchase of breeding animals, participation in cattle shows, common pastures etc) more strict biosecurity measures (i.e., isolation of in-coming animals, clinical examinations, laboratory tests, vaccinations) should be implemented. Therefore, "closed" herds present significant advantages in terms of health management. Moreover, all farms must apply control-restriction measures for visitors and vehicles as well as control and protection measures for feedstuffs and water. Animals of other species (farm or companion animals) should not be kept on the farm, whereas the entry of stray and wild animals must be prevented. Planned control measures for insects, rodents and wild birds are imperative. Management practices, such as grouping according to the age of cattle, but avoiding mixing young with older animals, should be combined with high housing standards, including proper ventilation and frequent manure removal. The implementation of the "all-in, all-ouf principle, whenever possible, as well as proper disinfections, are necessary to eliminate the distribution of pathogens within the farm. Dangerous chemicals and veterinary products must be kept in designated areas. Appropriate nutrition and avoidance of stress will boost the immune system of cattle. On the other hand, genetic selection, based on specific genetic indexes, will increase disease resistance. Moreover, proper manure handling and storage reduces the danger of disease transmission. The aim of specific biosecurity programmes is to confront specific health hazards on farm. Such programmes are developed according to the risk analysis methodology, which comprises risk assessment, risk management and risk communication. Both veterinarians and farmers give priority to problems that are related with farm profitability, public health and animal welfare. Grouping health problems by some of their common characteristics, allows a simultaneous approach, without extra effort. Overall, the lack of professional attitude by farmers, the defective design and development, as well as the inadequate organization of Greek cattle farms, are the main obstacles in implementing biosecurity measures. But, part of the responsibility lies on the veterinary profession as well; lack of training and motivation is the most probable explanation.

Στόχος της παρούσας μελέτης ήταν η διερεύνηση της επίδρασης της προσθήκης ατταπουλγίτη στα σιτηρέσια των χοιρομητέρων, στις αποδόσεις τους κατά τη διάρκεια της κυοφορίας και της γαλουχίας. Η μελέτη συμπεριέλαβε δύο συνεχείς αναπαραγωγικούς κύκλους σε δύο εμπορικές εκτροφές: Εκτροφή Α (δυναμικότητας 550 χοιρομητέρων), Εκτροφή Β (δυναμικότητας 220 χοιρομητέρων). Οι πειραματικές ομάδες ήταν: α) ομάδα μάρτυρας (CN): οι χοιρομητέρες κατανάλωναν το σύνηθες σιτηρέσιο κυοφορίας και γαλουχίας, β) ομάδα ατταπουλγίτη (ΑΤ): οι χοιρομητέρες κατανάλωναν το σιτηρέσιο της ομάδας CN με επιπλέον 0,7% προϊόντος ατταπουλγίτη και γ) ομάδα σύνθετου ατταπουλγίτη (ΑΤ+): οι χοιρομητέρες κατανάλωναν το σιτηρέσιο της ομάδας CN με επιπλέον 0,7% ατταπουλγίτη και ενός μίγματος αποτελούμενου από ένζυμα, ζύμες και αμινοξέα (0,1%), σε σύνολο προσθήκης το 0,8%. Ο αριθμός των χοιρομητέρων σε κάθε πειραματική ομάδα και ανά κύκλο ήταν: 24 για την Εκτροφή Α, 12 για την Εκτροφή Β. Αρχικά, τα πειραματικά δεδομένα επεξεργάστηκαν στατιστικά για κάθε κύκλο και για κάθε εκτροφή χωριστά. Στη συνέχεια, η ανάλυση δεδομένων των χοιρομητέρων που ολοκλήρωσαν και τους 2 κύκλους στις 2 εκτροφές έγινε με ανάλυση διακύμανσης με επαναλαμβανόμενες μετρήσεις. Η απώλεια σωματικού βάρους των χοιρομητέρων κατά τη διάρκεια της γαλουχίας, ήταν οριακά υψηλότερη στην ομάδα ΑΤ σε σχέση με την ομάδα CN κατά τη διάρκεια του πρώτου αναπαραγωγικού κύκλου στην Εκτροφή Β και υψηλότερη στις ομάδες ΑΤ και ΑΤ+ σε σχέση με την ομάδα CN στις χοιρομητέρες που ολοκλήρωσαν και τους 2 αναπαραγωγικούς κύκλους στην Εκτροφή Α (P=0.063 και P=0.023, αντίστοιχα). Το μέγεθος της τοκετοομάδας 24 ώρες μετά τον τοκετό ήταν υψηλότερο στην ομάδα ΑΤ σε σχέση με την ομάδα CN κατά τον πρώτο κύκλο στην Εκτροφή Α καθώς και στις χοιρομητέρες που ολοκλήρωσαν τους 2 κύκλους στην Εκτροφή Α (P=0.001 και P=0.011, αντίστοιχα). Το μέγεθος της τοκετοομάδας στον απογαλακτισμό ήταν υψηλότερο στην ομάδα ΑΤ σε σχέση με την ομάδα CN στον πρώτο και δεύτερο κύκλο στην Εκτροφή Α, στον πρώτο κύκλο στην Εκτροφή Β και στις χοιρομητέρες που ολοκλήρωσαν τους 2 αναπαραγωγικούς κύκλους στην Εκτροφή Α (P=0.004, P=0.037, P=0.037 και P=0.022, αντίστοιχα). Το βάρος των χοιριδίων στον απογαλακτισμό και η μέση ημερήσια αύξηση των χοιριδίων κατά τη διάρκεια της γαλουχίας ήταν υψηλότερα στην ομάδα ΑΤ σε σχέση με τις ομάδες CN και ΑΤ+ καθώς και στις χοιρομητέρες που ολοκλήρωσαν τους 2 κύκλους στην Εκτροφή Α (P=0.049 και P=0.040, αντίστοιχα). Αξίζει να σημειωθεί ότι παρόμοια αποτελέσματα παρατηρήθηκαν και για την Εκτροφή Β, χωρίς όμως αυτά να είναι στατιστικά σημαντικά. Η παρούσα μελέτη, που διενεργήθηκε σε επίπεδο εκτροφής, έδειξε πως η χορήγηση του ατταπουλγίτη στα σιτηρέσια χοιρομητέρων είναι δυνατό να βελτιώσει τους αναπαραγωγικούς δείκτες. Ωστόσο, κρίνεται αναγκαία περαιτέρω έρευνα για τη διερεύνηση των μηχανισμών που σχετίζονται με τις ευεργετικές επιδράσεις του ατταπουλγίτη στις χοιρομητέρες., The present study investigated the effects of attapulgite supplementation in sow diets during gestation and lactation on sow performance. The study comprised two reproductive phases (cycles) in two commercial farrow to finish farms: Farm A (capacity: 550 sows) and Farm B (capacity: 220 sows). The treatment groups were: a) control group (CN): the sows were fed a common gestation or lactation diet; b) attapulgite group (AT): the sows were fed the CN diet supplemented with attapulgite at 0,7% level; c) attapulgite plus group (AT+): the sows were fed the CN diet supplemented with attapulgite (0.7%) and a mix of enzymes, live yeast and amino acids (0.1%), at a total of 0.8% level. Within each cycle the sows included per treatment were: 24 for Farm A; 12 for Farm B. Initially data were analyzed per cycle and per each farm. Data from sows that completed both cycles within each farm, were analyzed by repeated measures analysis. Regarding sow parameters, sow body weight loss during lactation tended to be greater in AT sows compared to CN sows during cycle 1 in Farm B and was greater in AT and AT+ than CN sows in Farm A that completed both cycles (P=0.063 and P=0.023, respectively). A greater litter size 24h postpartum was observed in favour of AT compared to CN group during cycle 1 in Farm A and in sows that completed both cycles in Farm A (P=0.001 and P= 0.011, respectively). Litter size at weaning was greater in sows from the AT group than CN during cycle 1 and 2 in Farm A, in cycle 1 in Farm B and in sows that completed both cycles in Farm A (P=0.004, P=0.037, P=0.037, and P=0.022, respectively). Piglet weight at weaning and average daily gain during lactation were greater in AT group than CN and AT+ in sows that completed both cycles in Farm A (P=0.049 and P=0.040 respectively). Notable similar effects, although not statistically significant, were also observed in Farm B. This field study suggests that attapulgite supplementation in sow diets can improve performance indexes. Further research should investigate the underlying mechanisms involved.

Η μαστίτιδα είναι ένα από τα σημαντικότερα νοσήματα στις εκτροφές γαλακτοπαραγωγών προβάτων, με σημαντικές οικονομικές επιπτώσεις, καθώς σχετίζεται με μειωμένη γαλακτοπαραγωγή και περιστασιακά, με πρώιμη απομάκρυνση ενήλικων ζώων, μειωμένη ανάπτυξη και αυξημένη θνησιμότητα στα αρνιά, αντίστοιχα. Η αναλογία επίπτωσης των περιστατικών κλινικής μαστίτιδας είναι συνήθως χαμηλότερη από 5%, ενώ ο επιπολασμός των περιστατικών υποκλινικής μαστίτιδας κυμαίνεται μεταξύ 10% και 30%. Στις περισσότερες περιπτώσεις, η μαστίτιδα είναι βακτηριακής προέλευσης. Τα αποτελέσματα ερευνών σε περιστατικά κλινικής μαστίτιδας γαλακτοπαραγωγών προβάτων έδειξαν ότι ο κυριότερος αιτιολογικός παράγοντας είναι ο Staphylococcus aureus, ενώ οι πηκτάση-αρνητικοί σταφυλόκοκκοι (Coagulase-Negative Staphylococci, CNS) είναι οι κύριοι αιτιολογικοί παράγοντες της υποκλινικής μαστίτιδας. Εκτός από το μικροβιολογικό αιτιολογικό παράγοντα, σημαντικό ρόλο στην πρόκληση της μαστίτιδας παίζουν προδιαθέτοντες παράγοντες, όπως περιβαλλοντικοί, μορφολογικοί, διατροφικοί και γενετικοί. Η λήψη προληπτικών μέτρων συνίσταται για τον περιορισμό του νοσήματος. O εντοπισμός γονιδιακών περιοχών που σχετίζονται με την ανθεκτικότητα στη μαστίτιδα, θα μπορούσε να δώσει χρήσιμες πληροφορίες για τον έλεγχο της μαστίτιδας σε επίπεδο εκτροφής. Η εφαρμογή προγραμμάτων γενετικής επιλογής σε συνδυασμό με τα κατάλληλα προληπτικά μέτρα, θα οδηγούσε στον περιορισμό των αρνητικών επιπτώσεων του νοσήματος., Bacterial mastitis is a major health problem in dairy sheep worldwide. It is associated with reduced milk yield and occasionally involuntary culling of affected ewes, as well as insufficient growth and mortality of lambs. In general, the incidence of clinical mastitis in ewes during lactation is lower than 5%. However, the prevalence of subclinical mastitis is variable ranging from 10-30% or more. In clinical cases of bacterial intramammary infections, Staphylococcus aureus is dominant. In the case of subclinical mastitis the prevailing isolates are Coagulase-Negative Staphylococci(CNS). Moreover, predisposing factors related to the environment, genetics, udder morphology and nutrition, are likely to contribute to the occurrence of mastitis. Hence, control of the latter factors and bacteriological contamination during milking are the main preventive measures. The notion is that detection of the ovine genome regions involved in mastitis resistance will also facilitate the most effective control of mastitis in flock level. Appropriate genetic selection, together with the implementation of preventive measures, could reduce the negative consequences of bacterial mastitis.

Background Mastitis is the most prevalent disease in dairy sheep with major economic, hygienic and welfare implications. The disease persists in all dairy sheep production systems despite the implementation of improved management practises. Selective breeding for enhanced mastitis resistance may provide the means to further control the disease. In the present study, we investigated the genetic architecture of four mastitis traits in dairy sheep. Individual animal records for clinical mastitis occurrence and three mastitis indicator traits (milk somatic cell count, total viable bacterial count in milk and the California mastitis test) were collected monthly throughout lactation for 609 ewes of the Greek Chios breed. All animals were genotyped with a custom-made 960-single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) DNA array based on markers located in quantitative trait loci (QTL) regions for mastitis resistance previously detected in three other distinct dairy sheep populations. Results Heritable variation and strong positive genetic correlations were estimated for clinical mastitis occurrence and the three mastitis indicator traits. SNP markers significantly associated with these mastitis traits were confirmed on chromosomes 2, 3, 5, 16 and 19. We identified pathways, molecular interaction networks and functional gene clusters for mastitis resistance. Candidate genes within the detected regions were identified based upon analysis of an ovine transcriptional atlas and transcriptome data derived from milk somatic cells. Relevant candidate genes implicated in innate immunity included SOCS2, CTLA4, C6, C7, C9, PTGER4, DAB2, CARD6, OSMR, PLXNC1, IDH1, ICOS, FYB, and LYFR. Conclusions The results confirmed the presence of animal genetic variability in mastitis resistance and identified genomic regions associated with specific mastitis traits in the Chios sheep. The conserved genetic architecture of mastitis resistance between distinct dairy sheep breeds suggests that across-breed selection programmes would be feasible.
